    I really think Ragtime music Is cool. I enjoy Winifred Atwel and Scott Joplin, Although Joplin is earlier.. Their both really great.... I just don't see why ragtime is so good, I literally feel like I'm a century ago when I listen to pieces like this.. I'm only 11 and I just love ragtime... I really hope someone invents a time machine someday so we can experience the composer playing!

See I could play piano a little and practiced an hour each day and was getting a bit better but- I WENT DOWN WITH MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS and that was the end of that. Yes, Winifred Atwell and ABBA are my two big loves in Music.
    I'll definitely add this link to my website too, as soon as I get a chance.
    I have this exact same roll too and it is mostly based on Winifred Atwell's arrangement with a few modifications to suit a pianola style.

    Broadway Music Roll S4649 played by Len Luscombe

    • @brentcoombs5293
      @brentcoombs5293 7 месяцев назад

      @PianolaDanOz If you look up the MASTERTOUCH Alphabetical Roll Title Catalogue, you'll see that S4649 is indeed: "BLACK & WHITE RAG (Winifred Atwell Arrangement)". Len Luscombe had owned BROADWAY Rolls (made in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia) and recorded Winifred Atwell's version on Broadway Music Roll 8133 (which credits "Win. Atwell" as the artist, not Len Luscombe), before BROADWAY was bought out by MASTERTOUCH in 1957. What brought me here was my MASTERTOUCH Roll A.D. 4649 (rather than S 4649). It's like listening to Winifred Atwell playing on my own piano, right there, right now! Thanks for posting, even though speakers don't do justice to live piano playing in our own lounge rooms (at whatever speed we choose). Cheers.

    wouldn't this piano technically be a basic computer?

    • @eaglevision993
      @eaglevision993 9 лет назад +19

      Yes basically it is digital. The paper roll´s holes represent 1 and 0 for 1 being a note played and 0 (no hole) non playing note. The valves are basically the transistors and amplify the binary code´s weak signals coming from the tracker bar and transform them into stronger output signals to move the hammers. There are different valves in the system, representing NPN and PNP transistors in electronics term.

    • @organbuilder272
      @organbuilder272 5 лет назад +2

      Yes, it would. Remember that the early IBM machines operated on punch cards this uses rolls with punches. The holes in the paper are for notes to be played by the piano or the pipes and xylophone. In other instruments there are drums and other effects including lots of pipe ranks for melody, harmony and bass. Yes, it is a pneumatically operated computer - with an audible output.

    • @davidk8893
      @davidk8893 5 лет назад +2

      @@organbuilder272 Actually, it is technically not a computer. A computer is capable of carrying out arithmetic and numeric operations, this does not. However, the notes are presented as 'binary' to the piano. Since they are either on or off, and no sense of loudness is stored, it is binary. A player piano is better represented as a scaled up music box.

    • @eaglevision993
      @eaglevision993 3 года назад

      @@davidk8893 Well there are actually player pianos with a loudness control. They have an extra set of holes in the tracker bar for several loudness levels and need special rolls to make use of the system. I think Aeolian made them. A normal player piano will at least have an actuation of the sustain pedal through a similar system to express at least some dynamic changes.

    Nearly there footballfans 1000 but not quite. An older example to a modern computer and its programme, was invented in 1834. A Frenchman called Jacquard invented an automatic spinning loom which used punched card on which to store the instructions for the machine.

    Yes this sounds exactly like Winifred Atwell version recorded in the early 1950's. I am confused as to which came first? Did Winnifred play from the original sheet music or did she study from this roll or is this a later release of a much older song using Winifred's version in an updated roll?

  • @ackbomb

    My Piano looks just like the one in the Video. Mine is a 1927 Aeolian with the Duo-Art system, except mine is only pumps, I don't have a motor. But I am having problems with the paper being aligned with the tracker. The paper won't always travel over the holes, and sometimes it will actually change key. Then when I re-roll the Rolls, the start rolling to one side then start to rip the edges of the Rolls, I am not sure what to do. Thanks!
