      Darren Sorry to hear that, but I'm glad you're taking up exercise. Just make sure your doctor is on board with you starting an exercise program. Eat as healthy as you can too, if you're not already. This is a good resource from the American Heart Association's website. Increasing fruits, vegetables, grains and legumes is best. Try to limit (or completely avoid) meat: www.stroke.org/we-can-help/survivors/stroke-recovery/life-style/diet-and-nutrition/

    I'm 65 years old and a recovering throat cancer survivor. I do what we called in the US Marine Corps "Bends and Thrusts" which is essentially a burpee. Because of my age and being a total laryngectomee(neckbreather) from my cancer surgeries I do these gently by doing them in front of my stairwell and placing my hands on the second step and then kicking back my legs into the plank position and then back under me and stand up straight. I then repeat for the set number of reps I'm trying to reach for each set. These are working well for me and soon I feel I will be able to forgo the stairs and go to the floor.

    • @MinusTheGym
      @MinusTheGym  5 лет назад +3

      1121conan Nice! That's a great idea using the stairs to elevate the hands until you have the mobility to go down to the floor 👍

    I have avoided burpees because of the many variants and the complexity created in my mind in watching what can seem like endless modifications.
    The way that you started the progression with the simplest variant and worked up to the more complex will make it much more simple for me to get started and work my way up.

    I congratulate you for breaking down the steps to do a burpee. The funny thing to me is that I learned them in the Army but of course, the drill Sargent never explained much and we just did what they told us to do. Plus we started to do it at the advanced level from the "get-go" I haven't done those in a very long and they won't be as easy since I got older and got heavier. But by you putting them in different levels it makes it easier. Thank you for the information and keep up the great job you are doing.

    So, if I can't squat low enough to touch the ground with my hands, is there such a thing as a bench burpee?

    • @MinusTheGym
      @MinusTheGym  6 лет назад +9

      Jenifer Alsemgeest yes, good question. You could use a bench, the bottom of a staircase, a step stool... anything sturdy and elevated to put your hands on during the kick out. I also recommend doing a few squat stretches daily in the evening. You're more limber in the evening so that will help. Just go into as deep of a squat as you can while maintaining good form and hold the position. Let your weight pull you down so you sink deeper gradually. Hold it for as long as you can bear each time. Over time your squat flexibility will improve and you'll be able to touch the ground :)

I had a operation in 2006. Now while it allowed me to do most things again it restored my ability to walk. When you cant walk you cant work very well anymore. In a trade say good by to the ability to get around without legs.

    Great video. Good advice. Everyone’s fitness level is not the same. Without a trainer by your side, it’s important you know what you can and cannot do...yet. A person should not do something that can potentially harm their body. I think your demonstration is great in that you show the baby steps and gradually make the exercise more challenging as one works toward a fitness goal.

    Am learning to surf and burpees were recommended as a land based exercise. Thanks so much for the variations from gentle burpees - my starting point.

    Thank you sooo much for this video! I had surgery on torn tendons in my heel and ankle of my left foot and those baby burpees helped tremendously! I almost feel like crying lol. Currently still in physical therapy. I was working out before my injury and of course after the injury I haven’t been able to do any cardio or leg work. Slowly getting back to form though. I’ve seen your videos before but today I’m a subscriber! Anyway thank you again!!

    Great discussion of the variations. It took me back in time though. All the way back to the 1950's and 60's to my routine with the Army when the Daily Dozen was part of our life. Several of the variations were included in the Daily Dozen regimen.

    You explained this so clear and simple. I was like I need burpee’s for dummies so I came to RUclips, and low and behold you posted this genius video. Lol Thanks.

    Nice! I already do a lot of aerobic exercise, rucking with a 20kg pack and intense yoga, enriched with some of your isometric exercises. Now I'm looking for something for V02Max training -- pushing to near max heart rate, for about five minutes. Burpees should get me there. Bit scared of them, to be honest. I like the way you present them in grades. Thanks! Keep up the good work!

    Burpee really get the heartrate up. At 57 I have been doing the pushup burpee, but much slower focusing on form. Like your style of teaching 😊

    I've been doing cross fit for 2-3 months 3x per week and just realized I was making burpees more complicated than the are. I was doing the climb +push up version. Ughhhhhh. Going back to basic so I'm not struggling so much. 🙏🙌💪 Thank you!!
