Man I must be the weirdest dude on the planet because I actually enjoy these older graphics more than on my Xbox One. don't get me wrong the Xbox One is great, but I like the PS2 and PS1 graphics way better than this newer everything has to be super realistic crap. I want my games to look like a game not real life. That's why I play on the Wii, PS1, GameCube, SNES, Genesis, and NES more than my Xbox One. I like my Xbox One but not as much as the other older systems.
fireheartis1 trust me. Alot of people feel the same way. I might be only 17. but I hate the people my own age when it comes to gaming. they always have to say "call of duty this" or "call of duty that". It gets so annoying after a while. that's why I turned to retro gaming. I know that there is a whole ocean of games that I could play. I don't care about the graphics, sound, or frame rate (well, maybe a little on the frame rate). as long as the game makes me satisfied. then I don't care about anything else.
I remember playing this & Burnout 3 on PS2 and thinking 'fuck the Xbox'. Oh and PS2 also had Contra Shattered Soldier, R Type Final and Gradius V. PS2 was and still is an amazing console.
Black n killzone are the fucking shit Love Medal of Honor but those 2 are just in another world Hopefully Sony brings the killzone trilogy and black to PS4
+Oscar De Jodar Honestly, I need to get a PS2 again so I can finally play Timesplitters, Red Faction, Black, etc. Remember Area 51 on Ps2 and it was awesome, never finished it though. Urban Chaos was pretty cool.
"I really appreciate a good storyline, and I'd like a single player campaign to take ten, twelve to fifteen hours." GREAT words. The only way this can happen again is if WE, the gamers, let the companies know and DEMAND it.
I used to play the crap out of this one. I think I went through the campaign at least 6 or 7 times when it came out. It's sad that a lot of peoples entrance to the series has been Shadow Fall, which in my opinion isn't a Killzone, and isn't a good game.
I did like the game's Cold War-like premise and a few new mechanics here and there, but the gameplay and missions seemed generic I makes me sad to think that it could have been much more, but just ends up being used to show off the graphical capabilities of the PS4.
NosideZero And not even that it did very well. There are better ways to show off hardware capabilties than letting you go through dark narrow hallways. Like seriously, it's not hard to make tech environments look good, even Wii games can do that.
I've picked up Killzone 3 on sale and I wanted to begin with the first game. I had high expectasions from this game at first. After a short while the enemy voices and constantly screaming the same damn thing over and over and over again till' the end of the game.Very repetitive gameplay, this game had one of the worst sniper controls that I've ever seen. It is also very easy to get stuck or get killed on the final part of a level, forcing you to replay the same frustrating part over again. The checkpoints really sucked in this game also, I was constantly praying that I made it to the next checkpoint without dying. Anyway the whole experience consisted more of pain than joy even on the easy difficulty. 6.5/10. I hope that the second and the 3rd one is better than this one. Cheers :)
This was my favorite PS2 Game.. And my first online multiplayer game as well. Great review like usual.. Time to break out the Classic KILLZONE. Asplenia.
It was a great game but it was tedious because they just keep throwing wave after wave of the same Helghast grunts at you over and over again. I know they have more variety than just the standard grunt but thats the one use the most often. Also, you have to admit, the checkpoints sucked. Some of them were far to in-between each other.
The biggest problem is that there are only 2 enemy types: Regular soldiers and heavily armoured soldiers. That's it. It gets boring fast. Classic Game Room seems to like shooters a bit too much.
lol i've actually gone out and bought games because of this guy. i saw his reviews of Goldeneye, Black, TimeSplitters: Future perfect, and he really sold them, and..i love them. now i've seen this, i'll be purchasing killzone asap. loving your work dude
I'm currently playing through Killzone for the first time since 2005 and it stands up pretty well. The graphics have aged but the gunplay is loud and beefy. Good stuff.
Killzone did 3 things wonderfully, perfect graphics (for every game 1,2,3 and 4), creating amazing enemies (helgast rocks) and polishing the gameplay and making it feel different and more fresh than most fps games, i love this series
+WaterWhipin I can understand why. They are pretty unique. I think, they are, especially 2, very fun to play. Though, the series are far from being my favorite series.
Me and my little nephew had a blast playing the multiplayer in this game. He actually got good enough to catch me by surprise and kill me a few times. KZ is pretty epic, man.
this was my favorite game in my PS2 days... so many memories... i always used to go play this game with my friends very good game if you haven't played it already
This is actually an awesome review I have ever heard. I love killzone since it came out and I would of wish to get it when it came out. And a lot of theses days people just say it sucks just because it got a 6.9 on gamespot or a xbox fanboy. It is clearly that they have not played the game and killzone is something different for games of realism and a hard core sci fi game.I call this game a true classic game.
I can't tell you how many hours I have put into this game, because I still do not have a next gen system. But this is one of my favorite PS2 games, simply because it has a great story, and is futuristic, yet grounded. It is also very tactical, which is a plus. My only core gripe is that on most weapons you can not aim down the sight, which I always prefer to random crosshairs on the screen. But other than that, there is a lot of playability, since it has a long and depth-full campaign.
@MrPrototypz You have raised ONE valid point, although it has nothing to do with console performance. The original Xbox 360 had NOTORIOUS reliability problems (caused by heat warping the mb and creating dry solder joints). This problem however was fixed from the Jasper series onwards (about 4 years ago). The Xbox 360 uses a more powerful GPU than the PS3. In fact, several developers have complained that the PS3 is lacking in performance and it is difficult to do the same game as on the 360.
thanks for this! Really wanted to play KZ again, missing the non-floaty controls from the original. They should have done a HD remake, with a little more polish. At least then it would be able to shine, like it was supposed to. The frame rate for one would benefit greatly.
I remember putting in a ton of hours into the battlefield component of this game. I used to prop up a boom box next to me and play 30 Seconds To Mars' A Beautiful Lie album. Sadly, somebody broke into our house in 2007 and stole it.
@mex1cution I think the fact that I played it "so much" is a pretty good indicator that I enjoyed it. In spite of it's problems. And I agree with you, games are far more focused on realism than actual fun.
@MrPrototypz Well wonders will never cease! You have actually made a valid point! The PS3 DOES have a storage capacity advantage over the 360, and so very large games will require more than 1 disc on the 360, where as it will all fit on a single disc on the PS3.... but this has no effect at all on system capability, so the 360 version will STILL have better/smoother gfx. Also, the PS3s Bray drive is much slower than the 360s dvdrom, thats why games load so slowly on the PS3.
I am actually considering a purchase of this game. I have Killzone 2, the multiplayer is great, the single player is great. Would be nice to own this one as well.
most grenades have a fuse of 3-5 seconds. The fuse is usually activated by pulling a pin or flipping some kind of lever. The idea of grenade cooking is to activate the switch, wait for a bit, then throw the grenade. Ideally, you would time your throw so that the grenade explodes right as it reaches the target. This minimizes the chance of the grenade rolling away from the target or being thrown back to you by the target.
I totally agree with you on the multiplayer thing, SO many shooters today concentrate on multiplayer. Although it can be fun for a while. Nothing beats a good storyline. and honestly most first person shooters feel the same online in my opinion, and 10 - 15 hours is incredibly long for a game like this these days. I think crysis 2 is one of the few fps games that didnt make me feel cheated at the end of the single player lately.
Having never played it on the PS2, I bought Killzone HD on the PS Store yesterday because I was a big fan of the Killzone games on PS3 (especially Killzone 3). And I don't know why it gets so much hate because I LOVE IT. Then again, I'm not very far into it (just unlocked Luger as a playable character) so I can't say whether or not I'l grow to hate it, but so far IT'S AWESOME.
i totally agree. yes multiplayer can be good but i want a long campaign with a good storyline. not that difficult to ask for. they just have to stop focusing the majority of their attention on multiplayer.
Yeah I completely agree nowadays most games don't take the time to piece together a good storyline and some likable characters because they are so dam focused on making the multiplayer. And I feel that nowadays that is something the gaming industry has lost is making great campaigns don't get me wrong there are still some great campaigns today Red Dead, Halo, Assassin's Creed, etc etc. Anyways I'm glad I picked this up looks great.
Having had all the PlayStation systems I currently started collecting a lot of old games and this one I found at a thrift store. I fired it up and prepped myself for graphic withdraw as I'm on ps4 mostly. Well it was not so bad and given the rumble control still strong on my ps2 controller really helps. Use a good pair of headphones also helps. Playing on a 60 inch 1080 with rgb cord for best image. Well worth bringing out the old console.
For whatever reason seeing a game pusing the limits of a system's hardware is more interesting to me than a nice looking game on a system that has a sea of nice looking games(every modern gaming console) there is something special that happens when a developer has to work with limitations.
It's actually the level on this video at 7:26. I also loved how bulky the controls were, around that time the PS2 games were very slick in graphics and gameplay that this was so different, so grainy, so bulky and so textured that I knew if there was only one PS2 title I could get it would be this, and I wasn't a disappointment. If I hadn't got the PS3 that couldn't play PS2 games I would've still kept this game. One of the best games ever made until Killzone 2
A cool game that was a bit over hyped as competition for Halo. Halo made me feel like a total badass; Killzone made me feel like a grunt just trying to stay alive. The lack of music was a big addition to the realism factor: just hearing screams, explosions and gunfire really made me feel like I was in battle. Overall a pretty good review.
The Timesplitters series is outstanding. The 2nd game in particular is my favourite shooter ever. They're dirt cheap too, so you should buy them all immediately.
Love Killzone 1. Twas my fave PS2 shooter. I liked the gritty atmosphere, loved the weapons, the mulitple character selection. The single player campaign was quite long and challenging too. I still pop it in and play it from time to time. The graphics were very good for the PS2. Bought KZ2 today. So far, I really like this game a lot too. My only disappointment is that they removed the secondary fire from the guns, and that the multiple characters are no longer present. But otherwise great too.
Depends, if youre more into online multiplayer then Killzone hands down. But if youre more of a campaign guy, then I would say Resistance. But both franchises are defiantly worth checking out
I agree with the reviewer, Killzone 1 is better than 2. The SP in Killzone was great and I loved being able to play as different characters with different specialties. Killzone 2 wasn't at all what I hoped for it to be. Killzone 2's MP is great but Killzone had some awesome MP levels and game types as well.
I think you should produce a movie from the perspective of the Helghast and the rise of Visari leading to the beginning of the first game. Someones gotta do it.
Killzone was a major breakthrough in the FPS genre not many FPS (excluding HL/HL2) can put a campeign into the single player that you actually care to follow great game
Mark said it best that it was "to much game for the PS2 to handle".Should check out Killzone HD tho, fixes alot of the framerate & glitches plus the HD upscale & trophies are nice too
'They actually take time to write the game, I really enjoy this' Best quote I've heard in a review for a while, I'm sick of the clone FPS games in the current gen, so much so I haven't actually bought one since 2006, I really miss the effort put in to create atmosphere in the older generation of FPS, like Killzone 1 and the original Medal of Honour on PS1. Ah well I'll stick to RPG's and RTS until devs put more effort into the stuff that matters.
@ellisbest, the graphics are the same but output in 720p and the control scheme has been tighten up just like killzone 3. For online and extra feature, dont know.
I just baught the Killzone collection at gamestop for 40 bucks. It comes with all three killzones and all the map packs for the second and third one. Let me tell you guys ive been playing the first one and cant believe how much memorys and love it brings back.
My god....that's REALLY a PS2 game? i had no idea the PS2 was capable of producing such quality and i even have the optional component cables! This is one I'm definantly going to have to pick up :)
People don't give enough credit for KZ, but I think it's because that it paled in comparison to the Halo series(if you remember, the first two Halos were BIG). Good arsenal, enjoyed the cutscenes, and the campaign had a very good length and challenge factor! I liked it. It was a bit lackluster, but I loved the backstory and theme of this FPS. If you have a PS2, I personally recommend this for your collection.
Its weird but the one thing I remember about this game is the quote, "No not Johnson he was only a boy!" Always made me laugh
I always remember "WE NEED SUPPORT!" and "GRENADE!"
Demon Rantz Oh yeah, and that
Ell612 The Helghast were really loud in this game!
+Ell612 Funnier when the guys model was a 40 year old bald man
and he repeated it like 19 times hahaha
Loved them PS2 shooters. Killzone, Coldwinter, Medal of Honor, original CODs
Man I must be the weirdest dude on the planet because I actually enjoy these older graphics more than on my Xbox One. don't get me wrong the Xbox One is great, but I like the PS2 and PS1 graphics way better than this newer everything has to be super realistic crap. The PS2 was the reason you got better looking games today, it started the trend of High Definition gaming because it was High definition compatible
@@callumwearne7870 Component + HDMI adapter = bliss
Yup, couldn't agree more.
i remember when it came out, everyone was going on about how amazing it looked...looking at it now and saying that is kind of funny
Nice to see you here In 2020
then you reviewed it you dog
This game has one of the best atmospheres in a game on the ps2.
Amen
Always felt the guns in this game had the same effectiveness on the enemy as a confetti popper.
One of my favorite PS2 games of all time.
your reviews are SO MUCH better than the big comp type reviews. thanks for your effort and work.
Brings back memories,man.Good old days.
Just played the beginning of the game and one word: Awesome!
I remember playing this & Burnout 3 on PS2 and thinking 'fuck the Xbox'. Oh and PS2 also had Contra Shattered Soldier, R Type Final and Gradius V. PS2 was and still is an amazing console.
***** Yep
best ps2 shooters are
Time Splitters 2, Future Perfect, Half Life, Black, Red Faction, Urban Chaos, Area 51, and this one, excluding MoH & Cod
Black n killzone are the fucking shit
Love Medal of Honor but those 2 are just in another world
Hopefully Sony brings the killzone trilogy and black to PS4
+Oscar De Jodar Honestly, I need to get a PS2 again so I can finally play Timesplitters, Red Faction, Black, etc. Remember Area 51 on Ps2 and it was awesome, never finished it though. Urban Chaos was pretty cool.
I tried playing Area 51 again on PC cause it's actually a free download now but the FOV was so bad that I can't play it lol
Walton Play it on PS2. The PC version sucks.
Oscar De Jodar Black is a gem. Man I loved Black.
*Watch for shrapnel!*
"Watch for shrapnel!"
*explosion"
"UGHGUGHGH"
"I really appreciate a good storyline, and I'd like a single player campaign to take ten, twelve to fifteen hours." GREAT words. The only way this can happen again is if WE, the gamers, let the companies know and DEMAND it.
I remember picking up this game in 2005, I was like 10 years old, this game BLOWED MY MIND!!
Oldschool all day dawg cause you know im going hard!
Still my favourite in the series (and I have it all included SF). Very nice review!
favorite quote and its by helghast soldiers: "Grenade!"
I give this guy the award for "best reviewer on earth" for agreeing with me and seeing killzone's true capabilities
I used to play the crap out of this one. I think I went through the campaign at least 6 or 7 times when it came out.
It's sad that a lot of peoples entrance to the series has been Shadow Fall, which in my opinion isn't a Killzone, and isn't a good game.
I did like the game's Cold War-like premise and a few new mechanics here and there, but the gameplay and missions seemed generic
I makes me sad to think that it could have been much more, but just ends up being used to show off the graphical capabilities of the PS4.

I've played Killzone 2 & 3, and i'm picking this up tomorrow at the local play n trade. Can't wait to play it!
one of the best game i played in my entire life!!
- True Story
I really like it when games are dark and grey, that adds war athmosphere :D
I've picked up Killzone 3 on sale and I wanted to begin with the first game. I had high expectasions from this game at first. ciprianwiner "I suck at this game, so it's bad."
That's all you got from that whole paragraph?
You reviewed this eleven years after release and are surprised that the game has flaws. This game in 2004 was legendary
I've got killzone Shadow Fall, loving it so far. I loved Killzone Mercenary too. I definitely want to give this one a try.
"Apparently the helghast are deaf as well as mutated" LOL :D
This has the same kind of graphics all the cods have
This was my favorite PS2 Game.. And my first online multiplayer game as well.
Great review like usual..
Time to break out the Classic KILLZONE.
Asplenia.
I'm not too keen on Killzone 1, just can't complete it as I find it far too tedious and unenjoyable.
Justin A it was sorta fun tho
It was a great game but it was tedious because they just keep throwing wave after wave of the same Helghast grunts at you over and over again. I know they have more variety than just the standard grunt but thats the one use the most often. Also, you have to admit, the checkpoints sucked. Some of them were far to in-between each other.
The biggest problem is that there are only 2 enemy types: Regular soldiers and heavily armoured soldiers. That's it. It gets boring fast. Classic Game Room seems to like shooters a bit too much.
lol i've actually gone out and bought games because of this guy. i saw his reviews of Goldeneye, Black, TimeSplitters: Future perfect, and he really sold them, and..i love them. now i've seen this, i'll be purchasing killzone asap. loving your work dude
still better than Halo
Bitch u are stupid ass fuck halo is way better dont judge a game if you never played it
bitch? stupid ass fuck? I guess people who play Xbox have a limited vocabulary. Back to mommy's basement for you :)
D_LO214
Finally someone who knows about video games! Totally agree with you brother
***** except COD 1-5
I'm currently playing through Killzone for the first time since 2005 and it stands up pretty well. The graphics have aged but the gunplay is loud and beefy. Good stuff.
god the ps2 hasn't aged well, early 2000 for crying out loud.
bullshit game play metro 2033 instead
Read the book too
lol metro 2033 is generic these days
Josh Cobra89 not on Ranger mode with subtitles and button promts off.
Killzone did 3 things wonderfully, perfect graphics (for every game 1,2,3 and 4), creating amazing enemies (helgast rocks) and polishing the gameplay and making it feel different and more fresh than most fps games, i love this series
I've played every killzone and couldn't finish any of them. They're just to boring
+WaterWhipin I can understand why. They are pretty unique. I think, they are, especially 2, very fun to play. Though, the series are far from being my favorite series.
Still live this game, not played it in years but I do still love it. Probably an all time fave of mine.
I remember this game. My cousin and I used to spend hours playing this when we were younger. This game was the shit!
Me and my little nephew had a blast playing the multiplayer in this game. He actually got good enough to catch me by surprise and kill me a few times. KZ is pretty epic, man.
I was shocked at how little I liked this game but I still respect those who really enjoy it. Good review
Still have this in the case. Loved it. Was awesome game.
Playing this with my brother was a blast!
They just did. 1 month after you wrote your comment. Maybe Guirella read your comment. Thanks to you we get to play it on the PS3! Thanks dude!
I agreed with every word this reviewer said, smart "old school" man
this was my favorite game in my PS2 days... so many memories... i always used to go play this game with my friends very good game if you haven't played it already

dude. thanks for posting. i am going to buy a used copy today. it reminds me of return to castle wolfenstein for ps2
I'm still playing this game :)
The screams sound so funny when they die ^^
I had more fun with the original Killzone than the with the other ones.
The atmosphere and the character selection just make me love it.
thanks for this! Really wanted to play KZ again, missing the non-floaty controls from the original. They should have done a HD remake, with a little more polish. At least then it would be able to shine, like it was supposed to. The frame rate for one would benefit greatly.

Schopenhauer1025 that sounds like an amazing time
this is actually a good game once you update (config )the controls to a more modern shooter like cod for example
Of all four characters to play as, why not add a co-op campaign in the first place with more pick-ups and a twelve hour story.
@mex1cution I think the fact that I played it "so much" is a pretty good indicator that I enjoyed it. In spite of it's problems. And I agree with you, games are far more focused on realism than actual fun.

couldnt agree with you more dude, Killzone One will always be one of my favorite First Person shooters ever made!
I cant believe this game is 9 years old. I remember this game like I played it yesterday
"what realy matters is gamplay and storyline...KILLZONE IS FANTASTIC!"-the reviewer dude!
I am actually considering a purchase of this game. I have Killzone 2, the multiplayer is great, the single player is great. Would be nice to own this one as well.

heck i would play with you ^^
im an original killzone player i loved killzone WAYYY before killzone 2 was even thought up
Just bought the HD release yesterday. It looks great for its age, & they fixed the pop in & framerate :D
Having never played it on the PS2, I bought Killzone HD on the PS Store yesterday because I was a big fan of the Killzone games on PS3 (especially Killzone 3). Fantastic game with extensive replay value (MP bots). Rolling with the shotgun in Killzone is about the pinnacle of fun one can have in a FPS.
Having had all the PlayStation systems I currently started collecting a lot of old games and this one I found at a thrift store. @gamman93: Good point. Actually, it was the marketing people that hyped it. I misspoke, it was not the developers.

Killzone 1 and Red Faction 1 were my favourite PS2 shooters. Black was also good, but a bit too short.
Man do I ever miss the alternate fire options. Helghast shotgun blast was a favorite.
I literally got the chills when I first played Killzone Jesus Christ this game was so fucking cool.
You should definitely check out Killzone: Liberation too, Mark!
I think you should produce a movie from the perspective of the Helghast and the rise of Visari leading to the beginning of the first game. Someones gotta do it.
Killzone was a major breakthrough in the FPS genre
not many FPS (excluding HL/HL2) can put a campeign into the single player that you actually care to follow
great game
Mark said it best that it was "to much game for the PS2 to handle".Should check out Killzone HD tho, fixes alot of the framerate & glitches plus the HD upscale & trophies are nice too
@ESJAY5150 how is it hard 2 use?
'They actually take time to write the game, I really enjoy this'
Best quote I've heard in a review for a while, I'm sick of the clone FPS games in the current gen, so much so I haven't actually bought one since 2006, I really miss the effort put in to create atmosphere in the older generation of FPS, like Killzone 1 and the original Medal of Honour on PS1. Ah well I'll stick to RPG's and RTS until devs put more effort into the stuff that matters.
@ellisbest, the graphics are the same but output in 720p and the control scheme has been tighten up just like killzone 3. For online and extra feature, dont know.
ah i TOTALLY agree. I love storyline for videogames and I enjoy a game most when I can pass it in over 10 hours
Man a CG movie based in the Killzone would be amazing if that intro is anything to go by.
I just baught the Killzone collection at gamestop for 40 bucks. It comes with all three killzones and all the map packs for the second and third one. Let me tell you guys ive been playing the first one and cant believe how much memorys and love it brings back.
This guy knows how to give a review .. i mean seriously .. he knows what hes talking about x)
If you have a PS2, I personally recommend this for your collection.
how many missions r on diz game?
