Thank you for taking the time to do a review on this franchise, it is by far one of my most favorites. I remember playing the first game as a kid and I also remember how hyped I was when my dad got me the Killzone 3 + Rifle control bundle for the PlayStation eye.
Fat chance, that'd be downright misrepresentation - it was the blooming advertising campaign for the game. They WANTED that insipid phrase to be in everyone's brain when thinking of the game.
@TIGHTT88 The intro and premise had potential but you just end up mowing generic faceless soldiers so it's more of a wasted potential than anything else. Also for a sci fi game it felt really generic at least for me. You still just went in usual factory and urban areas or open areas with not that much to see.
I've dug out the PS2 to play this again, and I swear I have more fun on the original than Shadow Fall on PS4. I like on hard difficiculty having to actually take cover from dropships and APCs, to run for dear life when I hear "frag out!", and for my weapon choices to be more about the situation I'm going into than just personal preference. And the mist (not draw distance!) on certain levels keeping you lost and unable to tell where you're getting shot from, that's a deliberate game mechanic to make the Helghast that extra bit scarier. And it works, at least for the first play through. On Shadow Fall, even on hard all that tension is lost. The campaign is filled with enemies deliberately placed to give you free knife kills, and all the rest can be easily ambushed by using the 'tactical echo' basically a wall hack, taking all the challenge out of manoeuvring. The more you dig into it, the worse it gets: Heavy, mandatory auto-aim, a personal attack drone with infinite health and ammo that can do the whole campaign by itself, suicidal enemies who'll run into danger for no reason. The only fun you can have with it is by imposing some arbitrary rule on yourself, like try do this whole section with melee only. I shouldn't have to be resorting to stuff like that.
Killzone has no difficulty balance what so ever, I played the game on easy and I got shredded by Helgast in later levels it's been almost two years and my uncle stumbled upon a greatest hits edition that I swapped out from my standard release version and gave that to one of my friends. I'm on the 4th to last mission where you fight at a dam I guess or some kind of power plant or facility. It's after you traverse through a small desert area after the jungle levels is the best way to describe it, I never got around to beating it all that time ago.
Just beat the campaig for the first time, the halo killer marketing destroyed this game reputation. It ´s clearly its own thing, with a heavy tactical element like you described packed with a setting that resembles every war in history (vietnam, I-II World war)
The term Doom Clone is not what you said. The thing is that what we call today the FPS genre didn't have an established name until 1996/97 when Quake and DN3D were out. Until then all shooters were 2.5D with comparable technology to Doom, and because Doom came first, the rest were just called Doom Clones by default. Doom was such a breakthrough in technology back then that for years it was used as the name to call the genre entirely, so it wasn't until we got another breakthrough with fully 3D rendered games that FPS started to be used. Therefore calling Dark Forces and Strife Doom Clones is correct... and much shorter than "sprite-based old school first person shooters".
This game still has one of the best intros and music in videogame history. Joris absolutely nailed it. I remember being on one of the first samole orchestral music composers forum and he send there demos he made for the Killzone, what a talent!
I knew a kid back in high school who used the term "Halo Killer" in real life, but he thought Haze would be the one strike down Halo, not Killzone. Boy oh boy did he sip the koolaid... he hyped Haze up to Duke Nuk-Em Forever levels. That kid was so convinced and passionate in his argument that some of us actually started to believe him... not because we didn't know any better, but because he was so filled with hope that it became contagious. Then Haze released, and screwed the metaphorical pooch in the front lawn for the whole neighborhood to see. The other kids never let him live it down, his sophmore and junior years were defined by ridicule and shame. Someone even went to the trouble of slipping a Haze game case into his locker, but with a Halo CE disc inside instead. hey were so mean that when he switched schools his senior year, everybody thought it was because of Haze, and the disgrace he brought upon his family name. R.I.P. Kyle, wherever you are.
The Shotgun is actually super dope when you find out you can use primary and alt fire at the same time for a triple blast. It's range can't be saved though lol

I always love when I see what the developers intended with these games. Which was that the Helghast was suppose to be the really bad guys. But people ended up loving them, and sympathizing with them. It's pretty damn funny. Because yeah, the Helghast are awesome as hell. Also, Rico sounded ALOT like Detective Nigel Bonaparte (Nigbone)
I was like 10 or 11 when I first played this game and I have really fond memories of it. Nice to see it getting attention, one way or the other. I was never annoyed by the screen shake, if anything I thought the guns had an awesome kick to them. Very good video my man, good job.
Awesome review, been hoping you'd cover Killzone at some point. Killzone came out roughly somewhere when I was in 5th grade, and being younger to the genre most of the complaints went over my head (well that, and I barely knew much about online reviews at the time anyway). It was the first game I ever played with a sprint button and dedicated meter for starters, and unless I happened to have Battlefront first, it also made for the first shooter that I had that allowed me to play with bots and get a taste of a multiplayer experience before I even really knew what that was beyond 1v1 splitscreen. Between the awesome enemies with "cool voices", the different cast mechanics, the weighted controls, all the small details ranging from pre-killed bodies in some levels to taped magazines, and then stuff like the sprint function and bot mode, it was honestly one of the best games I had touched for its time. In retrospect, I get it though. Some of the designs are dated, the lack of checkpoints even had a returning player like me ragequitting the HD set for a period of time, and some elements just weren't as fascinating as what people had experienced with Half-life and Halo going on in the same time. To a kid who almost only knew the Medal of Honor PS2 trilogy, this stuff was a real gem to enter my house hold, but... to think it was actually pushed as a massive halo killer is hilariously naive. Still, looking forward to any future series on the other titles of the series. I think as it progressed, the games got better in keeping up with most standards, and on the whole its got to be one of my favorite military shooters even if they each entry have their own strange flaws.
Got it at the weekend & I have to say, I’m enjoying it a lot more then I did playing it on the PS2. The little improvements to me go a long way. Wicked review
I remember renting this game back in the day. Never knew it was supposed to be a "Halo killer", but since it was at the local Brokebuster, I didn't expect much since they mostly carried medíocre games. So I got home, played it for like 2 hours and went back to trade it for Forbidden Siren. I was shocked when I heard they were making a sequel to it, too, since the first one was so bad.
another interesting gimmick was level traversal. Rico couldn't use ladders so he had to take direct routes. luger could climb ropes and hakha could walk through laser mines, so they could flank and get the drop on enemies. this along with the unique weapons they each had encouraged different play styles
Watching this review for the 3rd time (as I play Killzone). Every time the video feels better and more accurate, as I advance in the game. Great content, mate!
Significantly better without doubt. Just the much more stable performance and smoother animations alone justify that. Killzone on Ps2 at least is hardly playable. Even Perfect Dark on N64 low res mode plays smoother.
Killzone? I remembered Killzone 3, and have yet to get into the series. Thanks for the review, G! I own me a PS2 slim (and a fat), and this review has inspired me to pick it up.
@@fuzzydunlop7928 for sure! It's actually a little scary like nazis overruling the city 17 or this game and there is nothing you can do about it if you are a normal citizen unless you are elike Gordon Freeman or something
A huge opportunity was missed to make this franchise memorable. They should have made the main character a propaganda fuelled rookie in the Helghan army and let him see the atrocities of war for the first time and be toughen by it. Part 2 could have focused on him returning to Helghan after the invasion and defending his home world from the ISA and see for himself how Visari is willing to sacrifice everything to defeat the ISA, even at the cost of Helghan cities and citizens. This would make him question his loyalty to Visari and the empire. Part 3 could have been about Helghan colonies from deep space planets arriving to Helghan to act as reinforcements against the ISA and they would learn of Virsari's inhumane actions and leadership and it would spark a civil war to forcefully remove Visari from office. Ultimately the ISA would have detonated the Petrusite during their escape from the planet and destroy most of Helghan and the main character would have survived and become hysterical. Vowing revenge against the ISA (a tease for a sequel). A nice way to subvert expectations since it would seem that the main character would defect and fight for the ISA. But the loss of his home world makes him just as xenophobic as Visari.
The Killzone series was the first FPS I’ve ever played and even though they aren’t the best games in the world, they have a special place in my heart, but I enjoy hearing others opinions about it, good video btw
I loved getting up close and personal with the Helgast rifle. There was a risk / reward with the timing of your single shot gun blast. The trick was that you could charge in and fire it mid clip BUT if you held down the alt fire trigger you would not reload the shot gun round until you let go, so you could finish the targets or lay down fire as you ran for cover for that longer reload
I was always a Halo guy, but I still always had Killzone on the corner of my eye. I started Halo and Xbox late during the Halo 3 days so the "Halo Killer" debates kinda went over my head. I just saw two different consoles with badass Scifi military games. Though Halo won my interests and I got an Xbox. Though I always wanted to try Killzone (Even made a Killzone trilogy remastered game case for my photoshop class). Anyway, fast forward to now and since Playstation is actually spanking Xbox these days, I actually got convinced to get a ps4. Got a free trial for PS Now and pulled up the whole Killzone trilogy... and some game called Shadow Fall, but everyone said to forget about that one. Started the first 4 missions last night and I gotta say you were spot on. I was pumped during the opening cinematic and then I started playing. The last of music during gameplay is driving me insane, the controls and animations make me feel like I'm playing a third-person game in a first-person pov, and I think I've put the weapons into 2 slots ("Can't hit shit, but plenty of ammo" and "decently accurate, but ammo is more scarce"). Gonna keep powering through it though and I am still excited for 2 & 3 since those are considered "the good ones". Though I gotta say, I'm happy I chose Halo over Killzone.
I did like this game. I knew it was as far as it could get from being a "Halo killer". But I even spent some time playing Killzone online on the PS2. It's weird but all that camera shake, reload animations and absence of music were things I liked about this game (on top of the Helghast badassery).
I owned this game as a kid and I absolutely loved it. I thought the Sniper was the best thing since sliced bread. I don’t recall ever finishing the game though, but me and my best mate was always astounded with the graphics of the game at the time. I’ll never forget playing co-op with him on the multiplayer mode shooting NPC’s. This was long before COD had NPC’s in their offline multiplayer mode.
I played the remaster when it came out(huge fan of the 2nd) and its pretty tough on hard difficulty. But it also had hand animations when climbing, which i dont recall in a game before, and the rpg like components to certain characters(you talked about) was pretty innovative, and nothing is ever explained. Its bland palette really does a disservice because it really feels old today.
A Halo killer without music just won't hack it. Would love to see a Goldeneye: Rogue Agent review. I used to love it and still think it's good but might just be my nostalgia talking. Keep up the good stuff!
In my opinion, the only "Halo killer" to ever appear on the PS2 was The Darkwatch: great graphics, great weapons, exciting gameplay with an option for co-op and good and original story. The thing is it also appeared in the Xbox, so that is it. HAHAHAHA
I love the fact that they didn’t add any Music in the game. For me personally it made it feel more intense and in certain situations when the helghast spawn I got survival horror vibes from it. I love this game. It’s one of my favourites.
I mostly agree with everything but how is Luger's Australian accent odd? Man, I've killed many with the sta52 in online multiplayer without the shotgun attachment back then. The shotgon in KZ was the most satisfying gun to shoot for me especially the double shot and reload sound effects. *BOOM CHUCK CHUCK...* How is that an insult to fps games? I bought Doom 3 and Half Life 2 around the same time as Killzone... Also played a lot of Counter Strike as well.. They're Shotguns is underwhelming. Last game I had fun blasting people with a shotgun was the super shotgun in Quake II...
Remember when haze was supposed to be a halo killer?
The Boss Stage1 I thought it was fun but I couldn’t stand the part at the end when you lose the drug
Even the guy at the game store tried to dissuade me from buying it. I wish I'd listened.

I remember playing deathmatch with friends and it was awesome. All the different guns, the graphics, the light and skyboxes where so damn great.
That camera shake when loading or throwing grenade, I think is inmersive, and makes it more intense.
Now that you point out the lack of music... I didn't even notice and I play this game for sooo much.
I still think this game deserves more attention and glory.
The grey palette, the history, really think that the helgast are the bad ones..
Maybe is not that good but absolutely halo m8.
Rico sounds like Sgt. Cortez from TimeSplitters.
Noticed that too, same voice actor I assume. Loved Cortez in Future perfect.
@@drunkenhowler22 Yeah, I noticed it as well and looked it up, both are voiced by Tom Clarke-Hill. Love TimeSplitters.
@@puddingtopf Same man, lame jokes and all, thats a series that needs a remake just so the new generation can enjoy its lunacy.
@@drunkenhowler22 Lame jokes, you mean in TS? I don't find them lame at all, lol. And you do know that TimeSplitters has been acquired by THQ Nordic? They're working on something.

Thank you for taking the time to do a review on this franchise, it is by far one of my most favorites. I remember playing the first game as a kid and I also remember how hyped I was when my dad got me the Killzone 3 + Rifle control bundle for the PlayStation eye.
I'm still dreaming of a day when we get a Killzone review that has no mention of Halo killer anywhere
Fat chance, that'd be downright misrepresentation - it was the blooming advertising campaign for the game. They WANTED that insipid phrase to be in everyone's brain when thinking of the game.
The problem is...Was advertised like this. You can't make a new burguer with out referencing MacDonald's or Burguer King
Halo was so huge at the time. Like insane big. Sony was looking for anything to be marketed as a halo killer. So it will always have that stigma
@TIGHTT88 The intro and premise had potential but you just end up mowing generic faceless soldiers so it's more of a wasted potential than anything else. Also for a sci fi game it felt really generic at least for me. You still just went in usual factory and urban areas or open areas with not that much to see.
TIGHTT88
Sorry, killzone story and level design was mediocre at best. Overall just looked like a quake 2 copy.
I can barely remember anything from Killzone, except that the start of the last level had an insane difficulty spike.
It wasnt that hard
Okay, so you basically just confirmed what I said originally. Thanks.
Ahhh, wolfenstein came first.Doom only improved it even further.

This game still has one of the best intros and music in videogame history. Joris absolutely nailed it. I remember being on one of the first samole orchestral music composers forum and he send there demos he made for the Killzone, what a talent!
The only thing that killed Halo was 343 industries.
@@jetsetatrophy67 I was so happy when I heard they were dropping Killzone. Fuck that franchise, it was a waste of talent.
i love the killzone games
Nay for the first. But 2 and 3 are great games.
We need a remastered trilogy!
Which is your favorite? I love 3 the best.
The first one really doesn’t look polished and interesting than sequels...
I love 3 and shadowfall I believe it was called
Got a tear in my eye..
It was just some light Hazing is all.

The Shotgun is actually super dope when you find out you can use primary and alt fire at the same time for a triple blast. It's range can't be saved though lol
That DSP "what the fuck" was great
Just realized Rico sounds a *lot* like Cortez from TimeSplitter Future Perfect
soooooooooooo, when you are on the topic of games unfairly labeled as doom-"clones" why not review the Marathon games one of these days?
Marathon is a lot of fun, has a nice atmosphere to it.
@@3xasfast811 the first level and Pfhor Your Eyes Only comes to mind
@@MusKubium Never finished it but that first level has fantastic atmosphere the rest don't which is a bummer but that first level will always stick with me.

Killzone 3 Multiplayer beta was my shit when that came out
Oh yeah yeah
Is your vision augmented?
"the shotgun is an insult to fps shotguns"
i dunno, that triple shell burst you could do was pretty rad
"The Halo Killer"
Oh boy. I remember that one
I got the original Killzone for the Ps2. It was released the same christmas as Half-Life 2. And I got both games for Christmas, so I had a blast. :)
Half-Life 2 must have been mind blowing compared lol
Finally! I've waited so long for this review. I really hope you do the rest of the series :)
6:58 That AI pathfinding.
Got it at the weekend & I have to say, I’m enjoying it a lot more then I did playing it on the PS2. The little improvements to me go a long way. Wicked review
To be fair... They aren't bad games.
One of the few of truly military sci fi games

A fellow Pertwee er. Go GG man. And yeah He was the best doctor

@@Gggmanlives Indeed. The world needs more people like us. I mean a dr who fought back was bad ass
I remember when that early E3 cut scene alone blew my mind.
2019 still own this game on my ps2
Play it and enjoy it. Also if you play this game TRY executing helgasts with rico s LMG. its Balls kicking.
im pretty sure That voice for the Tank guy, is the same voice actor for Cortez in Timesplitters.

Halo Killer?
Nah Halo killed itself by shooting devs in the foot
Finally you cover Killzone. I have been only asking for a year :D
Black was better imo
Significantly better without doubt. Just the much more stable performance and smoother animations alone justify that. Killzone on Ps2 at least is hardly playable. Even Perfect Dark on N64 low res mode plays smoother.
Killzone? I remembered Killzone 3, and have yet to get into the series. Thanks for the review, G! I own me a PS2 slim (and a fat), and this review has inspired me to pick it up.

Is Rico voiced by the same guy who voiced Sgt Cortez from Timesplitters?
There is only one true halo killer. It's called 343 industries.
That subtle dsp clip tho
I loved getting up close and personal with the Helgast rifle. There was a risk / reward with the timing of your single shot gun blast. The trick was that you could charge in and fire it mid clip BUT if you held down the alt fire trigger you would not reload the shot gun round until you let go, so you could finish the targets or lay down fire as you ran for cover for that longer reload
Man... I waited so long for you to talk about Killzone...
I am in peace now
I was always a Halo guy, but I still always had Killzone on the corner of my eye.
As a person who was a Halo fan back in the day, I did eventually try the HD PS3 re-release of Killzone 1, and can say I actually liked it quite a bit.
My series marathon senses are tingling. Yes, it’s a thing now. Although, I can’t imagine you’ll do the Vita exclusive Killzone Mercenary.
