This is the best shooting game on PS2 and even Xbox. Every soundtrack on this game is masterpiece too. None of any other shooting game soundtrack can beat the soundtrack of this game.
I watched my brother lay it on original xbox, I remember he would shoot a door down with a shotgun, and stand on it while it slid down stairs shooting bad guys. Kinda like what Legolas did at Helms Deep in the Two Towers.

I generally hate first person shooters, but this had something that set it apart: atmosphere. I know it sounds odd, but there were many inside derelict locations in this game that really creeped me out. This could have just as easily have been a zombie horror game and it still would have been excellent.
This proves that PS2 is more powerful than many people think. Many people think that is way less powerful than Gamecube and XBOX but this is very close to 7th gen standard graphics

U must have never played COD ghost or the big red 1.... u feel like ur in the military. This game while good, felt like u were just another man killing people..

Black was totally outstanding, totally explosive, and stands the test of time. I played it on xbox. Codemasters were so creative and adept at getting the hardware to do things that other designers didn't even dare, down to many loving details like the way windows shattered realistically in disparate pieces and fell smashing to the ground. Such a ballsy game and so much fun, and a visually poetic kind of quality to it as well, which may sound a bit strange, but the game has soul. I just wish the controls were a bit more fluid and that you could jump! Anyway, amazing game.
The depth of field effect when reloading is awesome! games like battlefield or cod could fit that in nicely (mostly battlefield, because cod fanboys get their panties in a bunch over any changes). I am so going to buy this game. Games like these make me proud to still own my ps2. I am NEVER going to sell it.

Probably will never happen. Black 2 was in development but got canceled because the team couldnt agree on a direction for the game. Google Black 2 cancelled and you should see some articles from january 2015 about it.
Remember playing it back in the day, didn't even pay attention to the graphics because of how fun the game was. I never beat the game though. Maybe one day I'll get PS2 again and play this, with Timesplitters, Red Faction 1 and all the other Ps2 games I missed out.

No it wasn't. You don't remember well. Maybe the Xbox version could look almost like 360, but PS2 one, being by far the best looking game on PS2, it doesn't look near to 360 games.
Efrén Payan I do remember well, cause I played it few weeks ago. Also my PS2 is connected to the TV with the composite cables and runs in the progresive scan mode. Of course by "look as 360" I don't mean resolution which is low, but the effects.
Well, pretty weird, because it's obviously at lower resolution, worst textures and overall bad quality FX compared to the first Gears of Wars game, which came out on 2006, if you are talking about Kameo and Perfect Dark, well, it stills no looking better, could be more impressive, but it has no bigger polycount, particles, etc.
Still remember how the demo drops you into a room with a padlock. Was looking for a key before I realized you had to blast it off because there are no keys. Hell of an entrance.

This was such an enjoyable game, visual and sound wise a super title. I always get random flash backs of this game even to this day, hence why I'm searching yt for videos. Looks even better than I imagined in my minds eye.
Last level ain't hard even on normal difficulty. It's just a matter of taking it slow and killing enemies 1 by 1. Even the finale can be done pretty easy
PS2 was hard to program. This is why only a handful of developers only can push the console to the maximum potential (the PS2 true power). I think most games only used 1 Vector Unit and not the other. This is very similar to the Sega Saturn architecture (using both CPU's was very difficult but still was more powerful than the PS1). Criterion's Engine on the PS2 is really impressive for the hardware.
Looking forward to go back to this game. I played it on the PS2 but recently bought it for the original XBox. I played some of the newer FPS's on current gen consoles but gameplay wise, Black remains my favourite.
Was looking through my old PS2 games and found Black. Played a bunch of levels and had fun. I remember how the guns were gimmicked to work with the game. Charging handle on left side to show the brass flying out, magazines of outrageous capacity (32-round Uzi mags hold 90 rounds, AK-47 mags double at 60 rounds, M16 30-round STANAG box magazines hold 95 rounds) and a good thing, too, because the goons require a lot of hits to bring down. A fun carnage shooter!

I had this game on the first xbox and didn't finish it. About 2 years ago I bought it from the xbox store for the 360. Many of nights with only a few hours of sleep, playing so long so I could get infinite ammo unlocked, died many times but finally got infinite ammo. Then replayed again for pay back with infinite ammo. Love this game.

I absolutely LOVED how the bad guys would hang on to the rails of the bridges, and you could just shoot one hand and they would still try to hang on to it. Man, was this game awesome.

In every review Mark tells us all the reasons to enjoy a game, but you know that time he makes a suggestion of something to add to a game it will be a great suggestion and that is weapon upgrades! I agree with him wholeheartedly! If a 'real' Black 2 every came out, upgradeable weapons like Resi4 or MGS4 would be perfect! Also put in more levels and New Game+/more difficulty modes to let those upgrade weapons have their use :)

The guns in this were absolutely fantastic... It's marginally better than shooters of today. Guns in this feel like they have a real sense of power and weight
I remember this game. I used to play it a lot, but I never beat it. That sniper sot at 1:45 is the only part of the game I remembered well, because it's where I realized that the bullets took time to get places. I remember using an M16 on that guy though.
When I first saw this game, I thought that no one would play it. HOWEVER, when bought it, I fell madly in love with it! In fact, this was the last PS2 game I owned before my PS2 broke. Now I wanna play this game so much....
Buddy of mine gave me this game a couple of years back and when my 360 took a dump, I fired it up on the old PS2. WOW. 62 hours of gameplay later, I beat it on Black Ops mode. Ridiculously fun shooter, and so rewarding to walk into the last chamber with a silver RPG and raise hell.
man i remember coming early to a friends house hoping to catch a glimpse o this game when i was 7 years old. now i want to own it, even buy a ps2 or gamecube just to play it.
This was one of the best shooters of its time when it came out. Top notch ragdolls, destruction physics, gun play, weapon modeling, animations, and of course, action scenes. Played it on the original xbox and loved the shit out of it.
Oh Black, how I miss you so. The greatest thing about you was allowing me to add and remove my Suppressor whenever I wished, just so I could shoot more exploding barrels. Please get an HD remake or sequel for Xbox and PS3.
I love how this game doesn't waste it's time with a compelling multiplayer or story or big tension... It succeeds 10/10 for achieving max satisfaction for the gamer. Anyone who plays this will defs finish with a big cheeky grin
These graphics were the very best for any shooter back in the golden ps2 days. Lookin at it now it burns my eyes but I can clearly remember playing this as a kid and dropping my jaw looking at the graphics. Also, destroying everything was very cool.. Them physics.

The music is there for comical effect but it does illustrate how it feels to play this games. One of my favourites.

BLACK was an unsung legend of the Ps2. Short but well lived. 8/10 (needs multiplayer/co-op mode) great game!

The guns in this were absolutely fantastic... It's marginally better than shooters of today. Guns in this feel like they have a real sense of power and weight
I remember this game. I used to play it a lot, but I never beat it. That sniper sot at 1:45 is the only part of the game I remembered well, because it's where I realized that the bullets took time to get places. I remember using an M16 on that guy though.
I am playing this now never been more happier In my life it would be cool if they made a multiplayer mode where you earn points for making destruction

When I first saw this game, I thought that no one would play it. HOWEVER, when bought it, I fell madly in love with it! In fact, this was the last PS2 game I owned before my PS2 broke. Now I wanna play this game so much....
Buddy of mine gave me this game a couple of years back and when my 360 took a dump, I fired it up on the old PS2. WOW. 62 hours of gameplay later, I beat it on Black Ops mode. Ridiculously fun shooter, and so rewarding to walk into the last chamber with a silver RPG and raise hell.
man i remember coming early to a friends house hoping to catch a glimpse o this game when i was 7 years old.
now i want to own it, even buy a ps2 or gamecube just to play it.
This was one of the best shooters of its time when it came out.
Top notch ragdolls, destruction physics, gun play, weapon modeling, animations, and of course, action scenes.
Played it on the original xbox and loved the shit out of it.
Oh Black, how I miss you so. The greatest thing about you was allowing me to add and remove my Suppressor whenever I wished, just so I could shoot more exploding barrels. Please get an HD remake or sequel for Xbox and PS3.

Just to say, I'm actually playing this game right now, I'm at the bridge (level 7, I believe). Still a boatload of fun to play, even today!
I love how this game doesn't waste it's time with a compelling multiplayer or story or big tension... It succeeds 10/10 for achieving max satisfaction for the gamer. Anyone who plays this will defs finish with a big cheeky grin

These graphics were the very best for any shooter back in the golden ps2 days. Lookin at it now it burns my eyes but I can clearly remember playing this as a kid and dropping my jaw looking at the graphics. Also, destroying everything was very cool.. Them physics.
