@ well spotted - yes I am in Vietnam on holiday and was going to get up at 3am but I’m too tired so thought I’d do it before i went to sleep - hope you enjoy!
Fascinating episode. I love your precise pronunciation of Italian names. The Catholic Church knew exactly what it was doing by commissioning religious art to stir the emotions. I haven't set foot in a church in 30 years, but I still vividly recall how the stained glass windows and the impressive statues in the church made an impression on my young mind.
Another wonderful video! It's fascinating to learn about these artists as human beings with flaws and problems as well as immense talent. It's incredible too, to learn that these masters STRUGGLED with their work - so much of the basic art history talks about every artist as if they walked into the room, picked up the paint brush, and BLAM masterpiece, done in an hour. But instead there's so much work and planning and even mistakes, as you show, and that makes the art seem so much more accessible, approachable. Plus, the way you show the "hard science" side as it were - the geometry and symmetry and motion - that's super helpful for all us folks that never trained in art in any formal sense. I would never have seen mirror images in any of these paintings, my eyes and brain just aren't in the habit I guess. So I appreciate that in particular! Thank you so much!!
I especially appreciate your analysis of the structure of the paintings. The lines, the swirls and the angles that the viewer does not immediately see or is aware of but which lend energy or solidity to the paintings. When you showed how the light in the three Matthew paintings mimicked the light in the actual space, my mind was blown. Great art deserves this great commentary. Thanks!
Wonderful to have a video on Rome that focuses on the Baroque, and not the Classical or the Renaissance which is often the case. Growing up in a Lutheran country, we do have some Baroque buildings and art works, but more often secular ones (for the aristocracy) than sacral. I was quite old when I first learned about the "counter-reformation" as something much more than just fighting Protestants, and how the Baroque grew out of it, that it was more than just an art movement. Caravaggio really is breathtakingly brilliant. Really looking forward to the next video!
This is absolutely the best channel on youtube! Hands down. I get so excited when I see a new video. The detail of the angel's fingers in The Inspiration of Saint Matthew is just incredible. I had no idea. Thank you for this one!
I've seen many art videos on Caravaggio's 3 paintings in San Luigi dei Francesi church, yet I learned a few new things of the paintings in this video! Thank you! ❤
Thank you for this video! I visited Rome a few years ago and it was there that I saw Caravaggio’s art for the first time, it remains one of my favorite memories!
Fantastic video! Rome is such a beautiful city. I took my 8-year-old little guy there for the first time last year. Seeing the stars in his eyes was pure magic. 🤩
We are off to Rome in February. Taking our 10 yr old son and he is so excited. He loves art and architecture...obsessed with watching Baumgarter Restorations channel and of course this channel. Can't wait to see his face when he sees all Rome has to offer in real life, not just from the TV/books. ❤️
Just want to say a personal thank you for single handedly creating my love for art history even when i was teaching my self how to draw i knew nothing about art nor cared much to look into it literally every single one of your videos has intreiged me and fostered a deep appreciation for art and art history, please keep it up.
Masterful! I loved how you showered us with information and such quality analysis of Composition!!! Really well done! I´ve been studying composition lately and what Caravaggio did is still applied to this day even in modern Digital Painting. It certainly has inspired me.
This is my favorite era of art. What a great attention to detail. I wonder what amazing things they could have created had they not been so focused on biblical stories.
It's surprising to me that no matter how many times I learn about a piece of art through art history courses or RUclips videos, there's always more to discuss. Love your insights
Thank you so much for sharing your love for art through this passionate video. I was in front of a few pieces of paints of Caravaggio in Rome and I remember haven't had enough time to contemplate each of one, even though was a grater pleasure. 💌
Massive thank yous yet again for this marvelous work of art and utter genius. (Not so) patiently looking forward to the next installment in this series. Keep up the great work, James! ❤
I never really thought about art until I found your channel, the amount of detail really makes me appreciate the pairings, thanks for another great video!
Do you think Caravaggio's models ever got stopped in the streets like "hey has anyone ever told you that you look just like Saint Matthew"?. Or maybe the parents of some of the younger models were super proud and dragged everyone to the church to see their kid on the wall.
Please like and leave a comment - it really helps promote the channel and I appreciate your support! Thanks
A few hours early, no?

Yes - the Catholic Church knew exactly what they were doing - even as an atheist the work still affects me emotionally!

How did it go?
