    This video does such a great job of showing just how much Borgov respected Beth. He came to our defense when his bodyguards insulted her, he was impressed when she spoke Russian, he seemed disappointed by how he won in Paris, he offered her a draw, and was a good sport when he lost. From the very beginning, Borgov saw her potential, and saw her as an equal.

    What I love so much about Queen's Gambit is that it didn't try to force an ideology into the show, not a US-patriotic one, even though it was a Russian-American competition, nor a feminist one, even though the lead was a woman in a male-dominated field. So rare!

    • @YouTubeCensors

      Maybe I'm naive but stuff like that never crosses my mind, unless very blatant BUT will say I watched another video after binging the show and the female uploader was going about empowerment and women's this and that and immediately turned me off to it and it's not like I'm against that but when someone is so blatantly pushing something, it can be annoying and definitely enjoyed the fact the Soviets weren't demonized as if often the case, especially today in 2022 with Russia

    • @cameronjosephvideos5942

      I've never seen it so well handled in modern television. Like, the sexism is there, but it's very naturally done. A lesser show would've had men constantly demeaning her and making rude comments. But real life sexism is usually more subtle than that. I mean yes you get maybe one or two direct comments, but most of it is either understated condescension, or the fact that the news can't stop talking about the fact that she's a girl which is very true to life. There was the odd in your face comment but it never felt forced. It never felt like the show was preaching at you, it simply portrayed how people in the 60s would've reacted to someone like Beth.
      I also liked how she had so many men in her life who supported her and wanted her to succeed and she even accepted their help instead of it just being her alone. The show has a very healthy view of masculinity despite being centered around a woman in a male dominated field. Of course women helped her out as well, but even the initially sexist men turned out to be more layered and eventually wish the best for Beth.
      There's also just Beth herself. Female protagonists recently aren't allowed to show weakness. Beth not only gets beaten a lot by men, and receives a lot of help from men in a way that never undermines how brilliant she is, but beyond her mental health struggles that the story is centered around, Beth is also shown to be very immature and bratty, never once accepting defeat with any grace. She pretty much always storms off in anger and throws a tantrum. It makes her seem all that much stronger when she keeps coming back despite how discouraging a loss can be for her, and for functioning without her drugs in the last episode. A strong character is one that overcomes their weaknesses, not one that was always strong that's not something any human on the planet can relate to.

    I liked this montage, but I feel like a couple very important scenes were left off. There are several moments where Beth and Borgov share the same expressions, the same small movements, like when they're getting ready for the tournament in Russia they both drink at the same time, cross their legs while sitting at the same time in the same way, make the same moves during their simultaneous games. It's a sweet detail that showed that they were very similar in some aspects, just like Borgov said in the elevator

      @Miro Reverby In Russia, they say the same nonsense about the Americans, it's called propaganda. • @blind_bastard
      @blind_bastard 3 года назад +2

      @Miro Reverby It's not hard for me to believe it. To be honest, I do not know the details, since there is no information about this in the Russian segment of the Internet. I was based rather on what I hear about how history is being "rewritten" in favor of one of the powers. What I wrote about people is more related to the spectators, yes I was glad to see Russian athletes who play well and know how to accept their defeat, but what warms my soul is ordinary spectators who have no some kind of enmity for Harmon and sincerely glad that she won. Yes, I know that we are talking about the Soviet Union, but I am pleased to think that despite everything that is happening now in politics and in the world in general, it didn’t hurt to portray us as normal people :)
