I started watching "Queen's Gambit" as soon as it started streaming and finished it in one go. All the while hoping Agadmator would analyse the games. This is why you are such an excellent analyser of everything
When I saw the series, I immedialety thought "this is gonna be on youtube in five minutes", or something. But this is really quality. I never expected the commentary to be as entertaining as the series itself! Thankyou very much.
Thank you Antonio for recommending this awesome series.. it really motivated me to start playing and study chess for real.. hopefully soon buying my 1st book "Modern Chess Openings" 😁
I think there's even some alekhine in her game as Harry suggests it in the show as well. But you know the lifestyle and craziness translating on the board is all morphy xD
A show about two of the passions of my life: chess and mind-altering substances (not necessarily in that order). I think the back-and-forth comments in the crucial game in the second episode were off the mark. I have played all over the world and that doesn't happen. The closest is that I once called an opponent a dickhead but I was only 15 and he claimed I had lost on time (playing too quickly to record moves) and I hadn't. And I was 15.
Morphy's opera house game (variation) Also, #suggestion Steinitz vs Chigorin, game at 1892, "Black King is on e5" Edit: the game does look a bit like Nezhmetdinov vs Kasparian. And since the title infers to a legendary attacker, then this is my 2nd guess.
Thanks a ton for covering these games! I thoroughly enjoyed the show, and love being able to come here and see all the moves with a full and proper view of the board. Whenever I watch a movie that has a chess game played in it, I always like to look over the board to see if a position that is called checkmate is actually checkmate.
The filmmaking in The Queen's Gambit is amazing. The photography is simply the best I've ever seen in a series, limited or otherwise. It's like watching a 7 hour long prestige film. I mean, those tracking shots. The fact it takes Chess very seriously and earnestly and Anya Taylor-Joy is wonderful is icing on the cake of this incredible achievement in filmmaking. This will be something I watch again and again and again.
@Full of Mischief it's extremely well beyond par for the course. The photography is absolutely sublime. Excellent camerawork and editing, not too to even mention the terrific production and sound design.

Really connected to this series because I made a friend who is 68 his name is Tito he lives 4 doors next door. I am now 26 and was moved by this film. Also I am currently playing a guy at chess online from the Czech Republic :)
You got me there, Adgamator : until the very end I had Ivantchuk and Morphy in mind. Thanks for giving me (and all other french people watching this show) an excellent re-confinement day! :)
Bathroom ceiling calculation scene seemed like reference to Veselin Topalov vs Kramnik, where Topalov lost - then filed a case againt Kramnik, claiming that: “He went to the bathroom too much and cheated.” It was also further claimed that: -Bathroom is the only room without camera. -There is a cable connected to the ceiling. -Kramnik forfeited the next game after not being allowed to use the bathroom.
Well, almost! Morphy certainly castled queenside in that game, but never wasted time on Kb1. His king stayed on c1 until the end. (Makes no difference to the finish, of course!)
Thank you for the analysis! This was the game that made me want to understand chess better. I had to know how Beltik was playing, his behavior made me wonder if he was really focused or just trying to throw Beth off her game (which he certainly seemed to be doing). Beltik's skill was real, and he was the first one to push Beth into a corner. Skill against skill. Thank you so much for the whole story!
Thanks so much for doing this. Loving the series, Im not much of a chess player, but could just about follow along to appreciate this. Which I really did!
Great analysis, Agadmator. Much appreciated. BTW, that Dudley actor was also in The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, a film by the Coen brothers. I believe it's still on Netflix. Highly recommended.
What makes this game so great is how quickly the action switches between the two sides of the board (King-side/Queen-side). Maybe that's supposed to parallel how quickly the dynamic between Beth and Beltik switches, or how quickly Beth's mood switches from her "Queen's side" defensiveness to her "King's side" attacking style.
This is my main complaint about this video series yes. First off, it should have been in chronologic order, and second he should not have spoken about anything other than the game at all. Rather unhappy with that, hence my first dislike on this channel

I actually experienced playing with kids aged 12 to 15 who are higher rated than me back in college who yawns a lot. I believe it's their strategy, to annoy or to show confidence that you are nothing to them.

Been playing all my life since my Dad who was a brilliant chess player, taught me at an early age. I have enjoyed your amazing coverage of classic games of the past. Keep up the good work!
Firstly I knew that the game was based on Rashid Nezhm... (from hint: No reverse gear) Then I immediately recognized the clip when the Rook delivered checkmate, it's a Night at the Opera by Paul Morphy
I read the book many years ago...err...many, many years ago. I was very impresses at how the Netflix show remained more or less true to the original story, at least according to my memory! I would recommend both the book and the show, in any order. I'm not sure if the book is as faithful to the chess games as the show seems to be. As a retired Mathematics teacher in sunny South Africa I'm afraid I'm too poor to offer any financial help to your channel, but I watch it often; I thoroughly enjoy your commentary and I'm sure that you are inspiring lots of young players. (I'm too old to be inspired, and I was never that good at chess anyway!)
When Beth met Benny, he said Beltik could have won. I still don’t see how Beth not playing c4 opened the chance for Beltik to win! If you can, please analyse the position so that Beltik wins. Is it because of the chances you mentioned later where the rook check allows black to get the white queen?
Really enjoyed watching this series ..And now this game from it.. please make few more videos of Harmon Vs Borgov games too..They were fantastic as well..Thank you for the beautiful analysis as always..
@DDanielG I agree, well made but boring, the story isn’t very compelling and it is stretched over too many episodes. If they make up a fictional chess story they should put more drama into it, it is very bland.
Being a member of this community has really been a blessing for me, never before could i have even thought about remembering a whole game from just a single position( 2 move in this case), but i am very happy to announce that the 2 move game shown at the end was the famous 'night at the opera game', played between Paul Morphy and some gentleman ;)
I am still in eps 3. And this series is nothing short than amazing. Some of my friends who doesn't even understand chess, watched this series, and suddenly they turned into a chess expert. Talking about Sicilian Defense and whatnot
Agad asking which game in history this game of the show is based when he has actually already given the answer in the description Nezhmetdinov v Kasparian in 1955. Smh
the question is not about the game he showed. the question is about a speed chess game shown in the series (Agad showed the clip from the series at the end of the video) where she plays a simul and this checkmate appears. the question is in which famous game does this checkmate appears?? answer is paul Morphy's night at the opera

I know the night at the opera game. this is not that game
*I follow your chess videos and I only started playing chess seriously three years ago at 77 years of age! At first I was pathetic but I can beat Stockfish at level 4 and sometime at level 5! Who says that you cannot teach an old dog new tricks!* *I have subscribed keep on keeping on teaching people this wonderful game!*

Yeah. That guy is from Harry potter. I was still wondering where do i saw this guy.
Dudley 😱
No spell to save from deadly Harmon.
@@TommiPuuska he's a muggle anyway, so
Is the person doing the video Dudley?
The first thing I look for in puzzles like these is "can I sacrifice my queen?"
Thank you Antonio for recommending this awesome series.. it really motivated me to start playing and study chess for real.. hopefully soon buying my 1st book "Modern Chess Openings" 😁
Good Luck!!
You need to be 5 years old to begin with. All "master" started at 5. Example: Martial arts, downhill biking, boxing, chess, etch. Time sacrifice

@@jukaprazina7561 okay bro
she is like a combination of nezhmetdinov, morphy, and fischer
I feel like it must be at least partially Judit Polgar as well (not just because she is a woman - she is a super fierce attacker like Harmon)
@@jamesmathews4726 I’m pretty sure this is based of a book written in 1983. When polgar was 9
I think there's even some alekhine in her game as Harry suggests it in the show as well.
And I was 15.
lol great story
It is not that off the mark. Did you forget that Beth is noob and does not know the rules?
Well... I'm sure if you were 30 when that happened you'd have had a much saltier vocabulary to draw upon.
It was more what he said.
Answer is Rashid Nezhmetdinov was the player who is playing from white.
Morphy's opera house game (variation)
Also, #suggestion Steinitz vs Chigorin, game at 1892, "Black King is on e5"
Edit: the game does look a bit like Nezhmetdinov vs Kasparian. And since the title infers to a legendary attacker, then this is my 2nd guess.
Second one is the real kings gambit!
It's Nezhmetdinov vs Kasparian. The title too gives it away.

You mean refers. Infer is not the right word to use here
Thanks a ton for covering these games!
@@MattrickBT you just repeated your comment and didnt add anything
@@genericusername4206 Wrong. I didn't talk about the quality of the production design, or the quality of the camerawork or the editing in my original comment.
It's like I added to my original comment or something.
What was the advantage of playing C4 instead of H5?
antonio: we will not be going to spoil about the movie
also antonio: spoils about elizabeth's opening with her fight with borgov
thanks for the warning :)
I only remember him saying the first piece move. I don't think that's really much of a spoiler.
@@Wauly Right. Also, I think his intention was mostly not to spoil the plot. Obviously, this whole video is about spoiling what happens over the board!
I can't believe I would have missed this series if I didn't check your channel intermittently. Can't remember the last time I binged a whole series in a day...
ruclips.net/video/1HzfLZ2wID0/видео.html
I didn’t think I’d like the show at first, but I absolutely love it.
And games in it have serious depth
I cried a lot during this series. I am adopted and did live in an Romanian orphanage until I was 5 (which was old then). Really connected to this series because I made a friend who is 68 his name is Tito he lives 4 doors next door. I am now 26 and was moved by this film. Also I am currently playing a guy at chess online from the Czech Republic :)
As a romaian I'm sorry to hear that, I know that the conditions were rough in orphanages in the 90's..
@@c.rob2323 Thank you for understanding, I live in Ireland now and I am very happy :)
Thank you for the story.
@@irelandwalks3376 That's lovely, I wish you well! :)
That’s a beautiful post.
I think we all connect with the show in various ways, but your connection is really deep.
Chess can be a lifesaver.
You got me there, Adgamator : until the very end I had Ivantchuk and Morphy in mind. Thanks for giving me (and all other french people watching this show) an excellent re-confinement day! :)
#suggestion Beth Harmon Vs Benny Watts, the one where she loses to him.
Spoiler! D:
@@daser245 woops, I said it like that because there are multiple matches.
Bathroom ceiling calculation scene seemed like reference to Veselin Topalov vs Kramnik, where Topalov lost - then filed a case againt Kramnik, claiming that: “He went to the bathroom too much and cheated.”
It was also further claimed that:
-Bathroom is the only room without camera.
-There is a cable connected to the ceiling.
-Kramnik forfeited the next game after not being allowed to use the bathroom.
The clip in the end shows the opera house game, right? That beautiful game by Morphy...
He would've have found that way out, if he "got there on time." He had time pressure.
Thanks so much for doing this. Loving the series, Im not much of a chess player, but could just about follow along to appreciate this. Which I really did!
2:42
Him: "it was here in this position...."
Me: "Resigned already?!".... "oh."
Great analysis, Agadmator. Much appreciated. BTW, that Dudley actor was also in The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, a film by the Coen brothers. I believe it's still on Netflix. Highly recommended.
just wanna mention the facial skin of the lady that played beth harmon is flawless it glows. she's a real beaut
"I won't spoil the series"
*Spoils the series*
This is my main complaint about this video series yes.
First off, it should have been in chronologic order, and second he should not have spoken about anything other than the game at all. Rather unhappy with that, hence my first dislike on this channel
Then go watch the series and stop whining
I had already seen the series, but telling people there are no spoilers and then giving spoilers is not done.
Welcome back! Glad you're feeling better, Antonio!
Of course it's Nyezhy!!
You even have a video titled 'No reverse-gear Rashid'!!
I caught the Opera Game in that little moment of the show! The only game I recognized in the whole series. Thanks for the videos on this, they really don’t show many of the moves of the tournament games in the show.
"for those of you who just wanna enjoy the show" took on a whole new meaning this time...
This channel keeps me company.. Im happy it exists
Agad: if some of you don't believe me!!

"Do you see it now? Or should we play it out on the board?" - Top ten best kill lines ever

didnt he say himself at the end that its Rashid nezmedinov
@@abdullahimran4624 Hey sorry my bad for being unclear. I was talking about the clip from the show Agad showed in the end. The one with them playing speed chess.
@Peter Mortensen I think it's on Agad's channel itself. It's called the opera game if I'm not wrong.

21:12. Morphy’s Opera game, is what I’m thinking.
I agree!
yep, it is. as agad said, probably the most famous game of all time. i remember something i saw on it saying it shows just how simple a checkmate can be, and that's always stuck with me.
Watched the show and I knew you would do an analysis I've played less than 50 games in my whole life but I still love your videos. Really great stuff you make me want to play
Honestly your videos should be on netflix
Don't know anything about chess but I enjoyed the story. Was great.
I just would like to say, that I love your videos very much! :) Congratulations on them! :)
I actually experienced playing with kids aged 12 to 15 who are higher rated than me back in college who yawns a lot. I believe it's their strategy, to annoy or to show confidence that you are nothing to them.
No. The main purpose is to distract them and break their focus.
"Dudley Dursley from Harry Potter"...
Agad, apart from your amazing presentation style, I love your vast breadth and depth of "important trivia" knowledge. Keep up the good stuff! (You just forced a quiet subscriber to leave his first comment :))
For the first time ever, I was actually able to find the move. No reverse gear!
Of course a Queen sacrifice. It is like poker in movies, they always win with a straight flush.
Been playing all my life since my Dad who was a brilliant chess player, taught me at an early age. I have enjoyed your amazing coverage of classic games of the past. Keep up the good work!

I DON'T see it either. Probably because it's not There!
He didnt say he could have one. Just that C4 would have been better.
Benny didn't say Beltik could have won, he said Beth could have "lost her advantage" meaning drawing changes for Beltik.
Really enjoyed watching this series ..And now this game from it.. please make few more videos of Harmon Vs Borgov games too..They were fantastic as well..Thank you for the beautiful analysis as always..
Im watching the series now that you recommended it
@Kohinoor Banerjee queens gambit on Netflix
@DDanielG I agree, well made but boring, the story isn’t very compelling and it is stretched over too many episodes. If they make up a fictional chess story they should put more drama into it, it is very bland.
I really appreciate your commentary. Thank you for sharing your historical insight!
Wow didn’t know that was Dudley! He was great as Beltik
I don't think that's possible
Yeah they suddenly knew "Sicilian Defense" opening term. The world is full of mystery and magic.
Ask them if they believe in dragons.
Very nice! I didn't know the shows games were so well researched and truly integrated into the series.
Love the detailed analysis of all possibilities, thank you!
