It's the problem you get when they give them the authority to carry their service weapon 24hrs a day. In our country a cop can not carry a weapon when off-duty. When off-duty here you are a citizen and can only step in when a life threatening situation occurs. Even then they are not armed and must weigh up the risk.

This is why cops should have insurance like doctors. A cop who has been with four different departments would definitely have so high a premium that he couldn’t afford to be a cop; or would be uninsurable.
It actually used to be impossible (at least in California) to get rehired by another department after leaving one under a cloud. The reason being is that any another agency saw you as a potential liability. However, that no longer appears to be the case as the police unions have a lot more control of city councils now.

I’m copying and pasting my comment from one of the other clips from this incident…I had to go through an extensive background check when I applied to a sheriff department. If an agency agrees to hiring a person after said person refuses to allow a background check, that agency shouldn’t exist. I also think officers shouldn’t be allowed to resign to stop being fired for their actions. Whether they resign or are fired, they still need to be arrested and charged for those actions if any laws were broken. You and I couldn’t assault someone at our jobs and resign instead of being fired, thus dropping any charges we might get for breaking the law. I am pro LE, but I believe qualified immunity needs to stop. Make officers carry malpractice insurance. Stop paying settlements with taxpayers money to keep the incident out of court. Officers should be held to a higher standard. They are sworn to uphold the law. Giving them a pass and allowing them to resign is absolutely disgusting. There also needs to be a national data base that tracks personal and their files.
And yet, though all of that makes perfect sense to about 95 percent of us, we cannot seem to get these policy changes made. Because, republicans, democrats, and billionaires like it the way it is.

That is why a national database of law enforcement officer's who've had their peace officer license temporarily or permanently revoked/suspended, or exhibit a pattern of reported misconduct needs to be implemented. In this way, law enforcement agencies should be REQUIRED to query the national database on any and all subsequent applicants applying for a sworn law enforcement position. This would catch would-be bad apples before they're hired on.

Don't know where you're from, but in the US many departments have policies requiring officers to carry off duty. As far as passing a law, yes it is that hard. LEOSA is federal law that allows cops across the country to carry off duty.

He should not be allowed to resign he needs to have his law enforcement certification taken from him so he could never work in law-enforcement again, if not he will become a gypsy cop and go from town to town and continue with his crazy behavior
But there are people who will defend the system at all cost, when stories like this are the norm. THIS is why protests against police brutality and misconduct should be done, THIS is why questioning every police encounter is important, and THIS is why people will scream "ACAB" (All Cops Are Bad), because it's not just the individual, but the entire police department and infrastructure that protect these "bad apples" that consistently get caught.
