As someone living in Berlin, I thank you for mentioning how poorly BER airport is run. The more coverage this gets, the higher the pressure on them to improve.
I give them a decade
@@HelloOnepiece Know how much of a clusterfuck building the thing was, I'd say this is pretty accurate.
Quite a rare day you can say the Brits are doing something better than the Germans. Heathrow airport security is light and day,
@@HelloOnepiece A decade - what for?
I didn't really like the old Schönefeld Airport - but If you had hand luggage only and knew what you were doing, you could safely arrive a bit less than an hour before takeoff.
So domestic flights were a viable thing - often they were very quick even including the trip to the airport. They allowed you to arrive at morning meetings you'd have missed by train. And cheap flights were often a fraction of a rail ticket's price.
With the waiting time you have to factor in now, BER is essentially killing off short distance flights.
I understand some desire this for environmental reasons - but it's not an airport's job to reach this single-handedly by mismanagement.
Somehow, airport operators appear to have lost the concept of SPEED as a main characteristic of air transport...
@@HelloOnepiece exactly the timespan between the initial opening and the acutal opening, so another 10 years and things will be close to normal. or as berliners say: dit is berlin.
@@grumpy989 I don't like LHR very much, either. Last time I changed planes there they shepherded me through one security control leaving my plane from Berlin, bussed me across an endless airfield and then security-checked me again - though basically I'd been inside a hermetically isolated security zone.
A huge shopping hell without adequate seating for passengers.... I try to avoid using it as a hub.
The smaller airports (Loved Newcastle and Riga!) are, the better they usually work.
Big exception: Vancouver - big AND good... I'd send all BER and LHR managers there as summer interns...
I bet Scoot saw "Paul Lucas" on the manifest and had an "oh, sh!t" moment! This guy, again! Better get mama out to cook him something special! Dim the lights so he can't see how dirty it is! Great report, the inconsistencies are funny to us but they could be troublesome to somebody who doesnt travel often and ends up trying to figure out what they can and cannot do on this airline.
Bahahahahahahaaa! My thoughts too. Paul is getting a bit of notoriety online these days. I also jokingly thought someone at Scoot was scared shitless and probably called his/her mom to cook him something personally! I also found the lopsided inconsistency of the Scoot product so damn funny. It sounds like a scene out of that old movie where Steve Martin and the late John Candy take a trip across the country together. I remember the cute flight attendant having a fit of air rage and threatening to deny everyone peanuts! She would be right at home on Scoot, LOL!!!
Some of the stuff like, the inconsistent information, is unacceptable and could easily be remedied if people did their jobs diligently and somebody occasionally checked what they typed into the content managment system. On-board service is much more difficult to control and make consistent, particularly as many people do not understand what they can and can't reasonably expect.
Complementary ACCESS to power ports. Having it work is extra. 🤣
Paul good review again.. no extra drama on point
Excellent video and trip report Paul! I’m glad to see the improvement, hopefully round 3 is perfect!😸
Whenever I see Paul Lucas not enjoying a flight, I'm reminded of how much he enjoyed his Jetstar flight (Jetstar being Qantas' low cost carrier). I can't deny that I get a bit flushed with national pride seeing our homegrown airlines doing so well.
Too bad you're locked in your house
Jetstar is a good basic product for the price. We flew Perth to Indonesia a few years ago with Jetstar having prepaid luggage and vegetarian food. It was about as good on a few hours' flight as economy on any legacy airline. Then we did some shopping in Jakarta and I got on line and paid for extra luggage back to Perth. Smooth and efficient. No complaints.
@@Belbivdevoe Very few people locked down in Australia now. Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra are open. Perth being currently free of COVID doesn't take visitors from places that have the virus. That will change when we have 90% vaccinated as some states already have.
@@rais1953 😂
If they have a policy of not allowing passengers to bring their own food and drink on board, that has the potential to screw over diabetics and people on specialised diets e.g. food allergies. Maybe not a good look for them.
Yeah, this is the weird thing about the policy. Sort of strange to see that on an airline that operates 11 hour segments to Singapore.
youre conviently forgetting that they really dont need care. singapore is a one-party state and SQ is owned by the state so good luck getting them to change a policy because of your medical needs , they would probably just tell you to find an airline better suited to your needs, it was you after all who booked a ticket with them
tough shift making sure nobody's cracked open that massive toblerone they bought in duty free ...
Likely they did not want people removing their masks, Singapore has strict Covid precautions
This has been Scoot's policy for years. It's not COVID-related.
I’m looking forward to watching this one.
Great video Paul, really enjoyed it 👍🏻
Yay! I'm glad Scoot redeemed itself the second time around. Nice trip report, Paul. I was hugely surprised to see a 5th Freedom flight attached to Berlin. For years I'd assumed it terminated in Athens. I really don't mind Scoot for short/medium hauls, but I do wish SQ still flew the Athens route, as well as Cairo.
Paul another great vlog !
Thanks a lot! 👍
Great vlog as always!
Your presentation is highly interesting to watch. Thank you. 👍🇬🇧
I like Scoot, they are what they are, a definite budget airline. Everything is extra, if you know that then they are good and use them to your advantage. On more than one occasion I’ve paid $159 from Singapore to Melbourne. And extra $20-30 gets you the quiet zone seats with more legroom. These are actually better than most economy seats on full service carriers. They also turned off the lights for almost the entire journey (1am departure) meaning you could actually sleep, as opposed to SQ or QF who have meal services for at least 1-2 hours either side of the flight, which disturb your. Service is light most Asian airlines, generally excellent, not as good as SQ, but still excellent
Great stuff Paul
I live in Oz and have flown several sectors with Scoot, always in economy, on both 787s and an A320. There wasn't a huge amount of legroom, but otherwise my flights were just fine, to the extent that Scoot is my favourite low cost airline. My most memorable flight, in April 2019, was SIN-ATH (which, back then, did not continue on to BER). As I was flying code share with an SQ ticket, my meal service and even a souvenir take home blanket were included in the fare.
And now, Since it has been five minutes. Time to eat. Every Paul Lucas vid. Love you mate x 🤣 i think these airlines cause you to stress eat a lot
How nice to have the whole business class cabin to yourself 👍😁
Great review Paul.
I think it's a lot like Japanese cars in the west, pre 1980s. They were laughed at but the companies listened and improved; now Japanese cars are easily amongst the best in the world.
I think an airline like Scoot, especially now being owned by Singapore Airlines, is headed in that direction. And good for them, too!
Thank you Paul, for a wonderfully entertaining and informative video! 👏✌
A great video yet again 👏 👌 👍
Thank you Leigh!
Ellinikon airport was two blocks from my high school, lots and lots of memories! Love your videos Paul !
Greetings from Florida USA
Good to see it was a better experience for you!
Great video Paul
lovely flying with you
I did Scoot Biz back in 2017 from Singapore to Perth, and this reflects the level of service I got in a full cabin. I paid about £230 one way which was good value when you consider that I had 25Kg of baggage. I think it cost an extra £40 over paying for economy with extra legroom, baggage and a meal - well worth the extra!
Another superb vlog - thank you Paul! I wonder...
... if those ScootPlus seats were designed to meet North American domestic First Class specification? Little seen on intercontinental routes nowadays, but higher density/lower cost than int'l biz recliner.
... if any of your subscribers are old enough to have flown into Ellinikon from Schoneberg - or for that matter, Templehof!
... if Scoot use their IT platform to beta test future changes to future SQ customer-facing functionality...
Looking forward to your next post; may your skies be smooth!
I’ve watched both your reviews on Scoot Paul and the second trip was definitely better! However I still find it annoying that they charge extra money for power sockets in economy class to work! No other airline charges for that! However at least they did succeed in their ultimate task: getting your from A to B!
In economy Scoot's contract is to get you from A to B. Everything else is a chargeable extra. It is Ryanair Singapore.
@@rais1953 Silk air is better
Reject scoot
Back to OG silk air
@@aviation.comrade Does Silk Air still exist? I thought it had been absorbed into SIA. Anyway flying from Australia there's no Singapore alternative other than Scoot. I think Silk Air flew to Darwin but that's a SIA route now, probably with a former Silk Air plane. Incidentally my comment about Scoot charging for all extras was just a comment on the business model, not an objection. Air Asia, which I prefer flying from Perth, has a similar business model but with friendlier service and better food.
@@rais1953 Could still be
If its not then rip silkair
@@rais1953 I do believe they have merged with Singapore as they now have there 737's
Thanks for the video 👍
Thanks Paul!
Glad that you gave Scoot a chance to redeem themselves. It seems there’s still a little way to go because of the inconsistencies. Ps love your shirt. Very smart 👍🏽👍🏽
I love the 787's with those filters in their windows.
I genuinely still have nightmares about the last time I flew Scoot between Singapore and Perth...
Sameee
@@aeromotive2 the flight was fine. But Scootch are awful.
Make’s me scared to fly with scoot. However I purchase my ticket already and the worst thing is they don’t refund 🤦🏼♂️i just really hope that I won’t encounter any issues like lost of baggage.I can stand the without food policy but not losing your baggage cuz it’s could ruined your entire vacation.
It's easy for the service to be "personable" when you're the only person. I also must remark that when you were talking about the dated fittings you displayed a small panel that was filthy. That being said, the seat and the food looked quite acceptable. Now if only Berlin's airport can get up to speed....
Ah, this brought back memories of my Irish-German mother, slaving over her fried rice....Great vid.
Nice one PAUL. Maybe you should fly the previous disaster route again to see if there has been real improvement!! Off to Berlin June next year so thanks for the preview!!
Wow that was a surprise, so this time it was a enjoyable experience for you.
it's good to hear that Scoot pays attention to RUclips responders
Great that this time scoot delivered pretty well for you. Still I am skeptical about LCC but then again extremely happy it was good this time! On hindsight short flights are fine but long haul no way!
Pre Covid we liked Air Asia and Jetstar Raymond. Something for you to consider as things open up.
Paul Lucas flying ScootPlus: Reviews everything from start to finish
Me if i have a chance tying ScootPlus: Living the dream of sitting in the front of a Dreamliner
I flew scooter on the Dreamliner from Singapore to Sydney in Scootbiz. I didn’t mind it. Had a good time. The scootees were awesome and Singapore Changi was very scooter friendly.
As a former AA FA it is just like anything else... it is WHO you get that makes the experience...not so much the airline and of course the airline MANAGEMENT that creates all this chaos!
Former FA here too and I couldn’t agree more!! Thus that’s why every flight has a different experience.
Thank you for the video
I recently flew Scoot Plus from LGW to BKK. It wasn't very expensive, one way at about GBP450. And it got me from LGW to BKK. My experience matches yours: the on the ground element in London was pretty poor. It would be SO easy to have just one Scoot employee there to make the service seem brand-appropriate, instead everything was handled by a very uninterested group of third-party contractors. No Scoot magic on show at all. BUT, after only an hour's delay, we were off. The pre-booked meal must be the bleakest single food item I've ever been served on any airline anywhere -- and I used to live and fly the old Garuda and other domestic Indonesian airlines, so I know bleak. BUT I got a nice mini bottle of red. And those oddly dried-out chocolate biscuits you had. My seat was fine in that old-school "domestic first class" way. The oddest element was that I first had a seat empty next to me....and then I didn't as the cabin crew went about filling the Plus section with the chosen worthies from Economy (which was largely empty). I understand the logic from the point of view of regular customers the airline wants to reward, but the effect was to make Plus very full and to allow Economy passengers three seats for a lie-flat experience. BUT I'm not grumbling, just curious as to the logic. The overall take out was that I'd fly Scoot Plus again: it does what it says on the tin. We left Gatwick and 11 hours 30 mins later we were in Bangkok. No changing in Dubai or Istanbul or Amsterdam -- the three other routes I've used.
The sequel we all waited for.
Good review.
Swear i watch pauls videos anytime i see them pop up but everytime im unsubscribed? subbed again
Great video as always Paul, but you can't use Policy genius in the UK as far as I can see.
Oh sure call them out over the website showing the only seat available was the toilet but totally leave out the fact that it was offered at a 40% discount.
Forgot to add it's a wonderfully private closing door suite :-D
I flew from BER two weeks ago. I found the airport fantastic, although you do walk a lot. If you are facing the security entrances, go all the way to the left, through the breezeway, and into the next building (I kid you not) where there is another set of security lines. There were three lines with literally no one in them. I was through security in under a minute. However, it was very irritating that I was flying BA Club Europe (Business Class), but BA is not part of the BER Fast Track Security Scheme.
Good tip!
Ryanair app also doesn't seem to understand timezones, which is how I ended up with a 5hr flight from London to Kyiv, and a 15 minute flight from Koeln to London. 😅
Uh, It's Ryanair. I wouldn't expect that twat CEO of theirs to know what a time zone is...
Awesome video
Glad you enjoyed it James!
I was in the airport the evening before - literally zero queue at security!
I can't work out if Scoot charging for power in economy or BA charging well over 10% of the ticket cost for seat selection on my upcoming business class flight is worse. Still, I can confidently file both as 'ways to annoy your customers beyond the value of doing it in the first place'.
Mind you the planes are a lovely shade of orange!
Oh BER... That brings back memories and nightmares of the time when I was part of the operational readiness team... This airport will never fulfill the needs of modern air travel... unfortunately
1:36 so that’s what that airport is called! I flew there last year and I always thought the name was Schofield. For some reason. Really nice airport, and the weather when I flew there too!
Damn scoot from chapati party to bo eng to this scooti mite ahahaha how creative 🙄
When your the only one in business class I would think it’s a lot easier to give good service
Thanks! Everything I wanted from this video. I am curious how much cheaper scoot is than other flights offered?
Love the Dreamyliner overall but not so much the dim windows. Not totally dark like shades.
Upfront is always worth a few extra dollars.
I just flew scoot from Perth to Singapore and couldn't be more happy with the service
I think they saw you were flying them again after the nightmare last time round and really gave 100% effort to redeem themselves
You'll never see an American airline with so many empty seats, especially with every seat but one empty in the first 8 rows! And I like that since I don't like crowded planes
Great to see you in Athens (even briefly).
I wonder if you try on our Big-Fat-Old-Greek Railways (owned by FS of Italy)... haha.
I am so glad that ULLCs in US like Spirit still allow passengers to bring their own food
Some bright spark decided to design the smoke evacuation system to blow downwards from the higher floors into the basement, heat rises! The original builders went bust and the plans were lost, holes had to be smashed into walls to find where cables were run.
Great review, very odd to see a south East Asian carrier running a flight within Europe!
When he said they do not allow outside food and beverage, I have decided to never take Scoot. Bloody hell
Tarmac views look epic
I only fly scoot if it's the cheapest by far compared to the other options. i'm Singaporean. definitely NOT proud of scoot. esp since it's supposed to be under SQ.... like they just dropped everything good in SQ when they made scoot.
Cant complain much, when SQ open Scoot, they wanted to diversify options since our ppl wanted cheap options out of our only national carrier. And is also why our tiger air was absorbed coz of silk air and scoot existence
@@shuchew6458 The prob is they’re damn expensive for a budget airline it’s ridiculous.
Good old Freddie Laker and Sky Train allowed passengers to bring your own food, one of the best.
I was flying with Scoot on the same route 4 weeks ago in economy in the small section behined ScootBiz, getting to fly on a 787 with an airline from asia for 97€ is steal. Sure you shouldn`t expect world class service but I think what you get for your money is absolutely fine. I actually had no problem at all on the ground in Berlin..
I was surprised that they didn`t check your temperature during boarding
Mum's Fried Rice, sounds very family homemade.
3:17 I remember my brother and I used to smuggle McDonald's onto our flight and secretly eat them, when cabin crew came close we would just hide them under our jackets
1007 - thats no bulkhead, prolly just some paper. great insight into their flights. thanks.
I’ve flown Scoot from SYD to SIN and return in extra leg room economy . For the price of the ticket it represented in my opinion decent value . I knew what I was getting for my hard earned cash before I pushed that “ pay now “ icon . We get what we pay for and there’s never an excuse for being short changed . Let’s be honest , whether you are flying in Budget or full fare economy , the 787 seat is rubbish anyway .
“Do you remember the last time I flew scoot?”
*Ptsd kicks in*
You said you were getting Mum's Rice and I couldn't help but laugh. Thank goodness you found the meal tasty 😋 I was really afraid for you!
Here, I'm laughing at how lopsided this is compared to his last video on Scoot. I chuckled and thought "Maybe someone at Scoot was thinking "CRAP! It's Paul again." Scoot agent calls his/her mother and begs her to whip up a nice dish of rice and smuggles it onto the food cart! THEN gets access to the Scoot ticket printer and rewrites the meal section to say "Mum's Rice." LOL...
@@largol33t1 that's hilarious 😂
They finally got the fire suppression system right then hahahah
Nice video. I see that you made an extremely little mistake in the discription box, it is a B787-8, not a -9! Love your vids!
is that flight Berlin too Schengen considered as a Schengen flight, or do you need to go through passport control like Frankfurt Madrid on LAN
Nice vid- thanks. It'd be such a treat and fun if you and Noel Phillips - both Brits - teamed up for one or two collab. episodes, with banter and all.
I always try to find these "fifth freedom flights" and how to book tickets on them, but have not succeeded, would love to fly a wide livery short haul on the last leg of its journey. To be fair I don't look that long. If i remember you did a video with Hainan from DUB to EDI a while back?
Should call one of their planes Scoot-e-Puff Jr......thanks Futurama 😁
I tried Scoot before from
Hk to Singapore back to Australia. I think it’s fine. You pay what you get and I am not fuzzy.
Glad that meal tasted ok, it looked like a clogged toilet
Glad your Scoot experience was better this time (albeit, still some glitches). Was your meal included with the price of the ticket or did you have to purchase separately? I was somewhat confused when you showed the options online.
I explain at 12:05 it's included if you have the ScootBiz fare :-)
@@Paul_Lucas Oops, sorry! Must have missed it. Thanks!!
To you, what is the best first or business and which airline? Concerning the current situations now???… I have been looking into but having some troubles
Turning off the power outlets. Now that's a level of cheapness I had not anticipated.
Hey you should see Aeroflot during the Soviet regime. Seatbelts weren't always available! That's what I call "Soviet cheapness"!
I did not know Scoot were doing European routes. I thought they would just fly in and out of Singapore
The meaning of “Scoot” , in my dialect, means “SHITE”! 😳
I KNEW IT WAS DERAGTORY!!
Glad this Scoot flight was better than the first. I agree that Singapore Airlines is one of the best!!! I can attest to that since I flew with them LAX SIN HKG SFO.
Cheers Paul😀😀
Thanks Scott, glad you liked the video!
@@Paul_Lucas Always a pleasure viewing your reports. I worked for American Airlines and several travel agencies for my entire career. Also love trains. I'm retired now😀😀
But their halal meal option was such a far cry. Bland and tasteless.
@@GeorgiaAndrea Thanks for your input. In my opinion Singapore Airlines is one of the best!
I wouldn't say 4 hours before is solely an issue with Berlin. With too many different regulations in travel to different places, nationality, reason for travel etc., the 4 hours beforehand check in at current age is rightfully recommendable. I think.
Ok charging for power in an airplane is new to me. I imagine the coin access to the restrooms is next.
Another interesting video. Perhaps I am alone but the business model of mainline carriers having low cost subsidiaries seems confused. Surely it must drain off much of their ‘Y’ clientele? Overall mainline carriers seem to be struggling to find a solution to LCCs. One of the impacts of the pandemic may be leisure travelers being prepared to pay more for a better flight experience - are the mainline carriers taking advantage of that?
hope this time it is good
It's rare to see Low Cost Carrier operated 5th freedom flight on a same plane. Usually Low Cost Carrier operated direct flight or 6th freedom flight with different plane.
Flew with them once on their A320 from KL to Singapore. Few things. On boarding the seats seemed so close together, even for a short flight. Plane seemed to have some trouble turning onto the runway. Then shortly after takeoff there was some sort of loud bang, a bit of a lurch and drop in engine speed. As a frequent flier I have never been so frightened. Not sure what happened. Never again.
Sounds like a compressor stall
