I've felt gaming burnout a few times, and I feel like it truly started when I played longer games. It happened back in 2020 when I played BOTW, fatigue started to set in during my TOTK playthrough, and Nier Automata also had me feeling certain way too towards the end. It almost happened again with Paper Mario TTYD, but then I thought to myself that I've been wanting to replay or start certain games for a while. So, I decided that I would simply just have a small rotation of games and it worked. I'm currently replaying Metroid Fusion and it balances out nicely with Paper Mario, so any exhaustion I would normally feel is just gone. Another thing that helped was also rotating between different hobbies too. Regarding ZZZ, it lowkey makes me sad because it's super stylish action game which speaks to me, but 1: it's gacha and I don't want to play anymore of those and 2: the combat being simple just doesn't appeal to me. It being simple isn't necessarily the issue (I'm a Kirby fan, that's as simple as simple gets), but DBZ: Kakarot made me realize that playing a game with a simple combat for hours is going to make me bored. FF7 Remake had me invested the whole way through because of the gameplay and those are the types of action games I want to play that have more depth. Like you said as long as you're having fun the depth of the combat shouldn't matter, but the way gacha games want you to grind just isn't for me. I hope those who are playing the game are having fun though cause the character designs and style are great. Really enjoyed this podcast dude, looking forward to more!
I really think the burnout stuff made me realize why I was not enjoying games. Like even stuff like my faves (Sonic, KH, Bayo, you name it). Once I figured it out, I started having fun even with games I wasn't finishing. On not of ZZZ, I really hate that it's gacha because it's actually a good game. I've put more time into it and the game does get more complex the more you play (still relatively simple cause of there being no air combat but I think the game is better without it).The game focuses on timing dodges and character switches alongside team comp. It's a really unique approach to combat that I don't currently see anything else doing outside of Genshin and ironically kh3 with keyblade switching. My main issue with the game is the long winded dialogue more than anything else. For a mobile game it's pretty solid so far.
