I had completely forgotten this song. Soon as it started playing however it came rushing back to me. I was in the 7th grade when this came out. I'm 71 now in 2024.
I had forgotten how wonderful this record really is. The Fortunes must be one of the most under-rated British bands of the 1960's/70's. Absolutely brilliant.
I was but a youngster when these songs were released but I loved them then and still do….Fortunes; Searchers; Turtles etc….all underrated. I shall keep on listening til I drop!
When I was six, I used to lie in bed singing this over and over again to myself. It was the song on the radio I always stopped playing to listen to. It is one the the great performances in sixties music. The way Rod switches from the rich baritone of "when you said that we must part" (sung as a counter melody) to the octave-jump rasp of "you know, you know, you know you broke my heart" challenges even John Lennon at his most searingly passionate.
you never forget your first true love i am 73 /i will never forget the heart ache when she fell for an older guy and i got the flick.i was 16/at the time
There can't have been a better time to be a heartbroken youngster than the 60's. The songs of break up and lost love were on another level than any other era.
1965....wow..... I was five years old! I'm glad my big sisters would let me listen when they'd play records and the radio--- KFRC--- it was a great exposure to all the pop music, not just classical from my mom...!
Eine unverkennbare Stimme, ein wunderschöner Song... die 60er waren einfach unvergleichlich, in vielerlei musikalischer Hinsicht. Sowas nimmt man mit durchs Leben.
I'm giving a shout out to all who listening on this Tuesday, May 28, 2024. Listening again to The Fortunes just brings back happy memories of my young age. Being carefree. Waiting for school to let out for summer vacation. Hot summer days and long summer nights. Gosh! How I miss those simpler times! Anyone listening to this feeling the same? 😊😎
One of the best songs of that decade. The artistry of the performers, the perfect arrangement, the sentiment. I never heard it then, and as I listen to it now, I see that it was ahead of its time. 1965? Stuff like this didn't appear until the 70s.
Well I think that song goes streight into my heart. I have not heard it since a while but last days they brought it in radio and I was feeling the old time spirit suddently. It remembers me of my girl friend in those days.
@@ericht779 That's the beauty of You Tube. We can listen and see these great performances. I was only 12 when this came out but it's also the age when music becomes an interest AND girls start wondering about boys. Boys mature slower so it was the 14 yr olds who looked good to us lol I don't care if I'm old. We had the best music ever growing up. :o)
It's been many years since I've heard this beautiful song, it brings back so many lovely memories of my first love....time doesn't hang around does it? Welling up now!...declining years - eh? Thanks! Chris.
The Fortunes came to our local theatre about 14 years ago, Rod Allen R.I.P was singing all their great hits. He was amazing. I was so fortunate to be there. There were other bands from the 60's there too...Marmalade, Merseyside beats, Gerry and the Pacemakers,The Searchers...there were a few other bands whom I can't remember. They were all amazing. Being in my 60's myself, I remember all these bands in my youth. It was one of the best nights of my life and I will never forget it. Never be lyrics, harmonises, like that again. It was the greatest music era. It was music everywhere..
If not, the best, The Fortunes and Love Affair were so under rated. Everybody assumes '60's UK music was Beatles, Stones, Kinks etc. If you dare to say they were over rated, you are regarded as an idiot with no musical knowledge, and if you happen to like Elvis or Buddy Holly (who inspired those '60's bands) then the trolls, really do start spouting their evil abuse.
The subtle vocal harmony at 1:55 painted into this arrangement is like looking at a Picasso and seeing a small brush stroke that changes the picture. Spectacular song.
Really good music, really good times. Now what? Crap, (I hesitate to call it music) and crap times. I am so pleased I was brought up with music like this.
The Fortunes deserved more hits their music and harmony (voices) were much better than most of Mersey sound groups. I actually prefer them to the Hollies with high-pitched voices and kind of over the top.
It's funny how this old favourite 60s song of mine, which I had completely forgotten about until today, suddenly started playing in my head while I was out driving this morning. So there I was singing, ' Here it comes again, that feeling here it comes again ', absolutely wonderful! Thanks Frits for this great video, which means so much to me to a girlfriend lost.
Gosh all the emotions you felt as a young teen came back. I was 14 when this was out and i had a crush on a young boy who must have been about 15 or 16. I didn't marry him but i have never forgotten him.

Yes I was the same but so thankful that had older brothers and sisters playing 60’s music and now have great memories of my childhood. So many great groups around then and this song is one of my favourites.

The words are sheer poetry. Now I am on my own a heart without a home. Tears put out the fire within the heart of me. Doesnt it make rap sound crap

The Voice of the 60's the late great Rod Allen. The man with the golden tonsils who had few equals. A wonderful memory from the top 5 of 1965.
