  • Octopath Traveler is the latest big Japanese RPG to come to the Nintendo Switch from Nintendo and Square Enix. There's a ton of reviews from bigger channels that had to rush to get their 4 minute cookie cutter review posted in time. I took my time and played that game as you would... savoring every minute! . Let me know what you think about the game so far or if you're planning on getting the game down the road!

Hey man I see that your channel is at 1k subs.
I want to say that you might be the best reviewer I've ever stumbled across.
You are absolutely captivating. I know money and subsequently time is always a barrier but I do pray that you find your way back to reviewing and growing your channel. I write music but I've had to focus on business to make money. Seeing your passion reminds me of my own and why I am doing what I am doing. I hope this finds you well! Thank you for this review!!

That's gotta be one of the nicest comments I've ever gotten! Much appreciated.
Believe me, I wish I had more time right now to keep pumping out the vids although I've recently changed jobs and it's come along with a huge increase in responsibility and a huge decrease in free time. I'm getting the hang of it and I have every intention of returning!
Thanks for watching and taking the time to drop a note.
Have a great rest of the day.

I'm about 50 hours into this game now and I was very worried before buying this game because I've never had real experience playing JRPGs. My video game experience was essentially limited to Pokemon (which is a jrpg but it's so easy that it really doesn't compare to something like Octopath) so I was nervous that this game was going to kick my ass and I would end up not playing it after a few hours. That was almost the case! Before I had a party of four characters, I was constantly getting manhandled by the enemies in this game and it made it not so fun. I was even getting beat up and having my healing items constantly get depleted during normal random encounters 😭
Then once I got my fourth character, and I had a wider range of weapons and skills at my disposal, battles became much more manageable and then I could really grind and level up. I can truly say that I'm loving this game now and can't put it down!

I got it at launch as well, immediately regretted not getting the Wayfarer's Edition and ordered it as soon as it was available again on Amazon :p The music here really is phenomenal and I wished the Wayfarer's Edition came with the full soundtrack rather than selections but it's still better than nothing. I agree- I was hoping for more intersection between all of these stories which I think REALLY would've put it over-the-top. Nice review, dude, and while I wouldn't call it perfect, it's definitely in the running for my favorite game of the year so far :)

My only complaints are: have to rely on 3-10% steals to have competitive equipment. This means I am constantly resetting the game and retrying steals until I get the equipment. I might be a bit under leveled, but if I didn't steal the equipment, I would get devastated by the bosses. Which brings me to my second complaint: the boss battles. I am now using Therion, Haanit, Olberic, and Primrose. Every boss battle is the same so far. Try to survive until you kill the 2 flunkies with the boss, using Therion's attack down on the boss, and lots of potions, then it goes to a different cycle of defend/heal wait for boost to build up, then Therion defense down the boss, Haanit boosts accuracy and crit, Olberic boosts his attack, Primrose boosts one of Therion or Haanits attack. Try to stun the boss with its weakness before the others attack, but its luck dependent on who gets to attack first and if they crit. Rinse and repeat.

    • @SwitchKraftMan
      @SwitchKraftMan  6 лет назад +4

Hey Zeke, I can't entirely disagree with you. I couple of things I would add though is that the chances of successfully stealing an item from an NPC goes up as you increase Therion's level, so some grinding may be in order. Also, with Tressa, you have the ability to flat out purchase any item you can steal. I hope that helps! Plus I always found awesome equipment is treasure boxes in caves all over the map. Do your best to find them all.
As for the generic nature of the boss battles, I noticed that all of the battles for a specific chapter of each character were similar but got mixed up nicely as you progressed to Chapter 3 and especially Chapter 4 for each character. I can see though how it can appear a little repetitive.
With all that being said, get ready for a CRAZY post game with some of the hardest and most skill testing battles you can imagine. They really require you to think outside the box.
Thanks for taking the time to watch and even drop a note. I really appreciate it.

    Good review.
One thing that I dislike about the game is that the chapter 1s of each character can be a bit formulaic. There is always an introduction, exploring their abilities and then a dungeon. One could say that most RPGs are like that, but I still felt that in Octopath it was more apparent than in other games. You new party members also always start on level 1, so you have to grind a bit.
What I liked and what many RPGs do wrong, is the fact that even bosses have weaknesses. While bosses should be tough, if a game removes weaknesses there is very little strategy left, it makes standard enemies more interesting to fight than bosses in many games. Octopath got it right and the bosses are hard because they have high HP and attack power, but they still have weaknesses, can get debuffs, they are not immune to stealing from them etc.

This game is great, music and art are fantastic, and even if some characters have a better story than others, you can feel the purpose of all of them. I picked it up on Steam for the PC...its fantastic. The soundtrack is incredible. There have been times I've turned the game on and left it running for the music alone. Personally my only gripe is how long some of the battles can take...that wasn't a joke when he said some boss battles can take upwards of 30 minutes to complete. On the PC that can translate to somewhat of a slog if you have something the needs doing, but I suppose that's the advantage of playing on the Switch, which I regrettably do not own yet.
