  • Retro gaming fans likely were excited for this one as Triangle Strategy hails from the same team behind Octopath Traveler. The art style is really what makes their games shine as they blend 16 bit pixel art with 3D assets in Unreal Engine 4 to make something visually unique. While I had expectations for this game, a few things caught me off guard...

    • @zammich3649

I think that permadeath is a cool feature on paper, but in practice, players just reset when they lose characters and ultimately your options get pretty limited. In a game like Triangle Strategy, you can go for a big maneuver with the tradeoff being that you won't be able to use the character until the battle is over, which makes the rest of the battle harder. In permadeath games like Fire Emblem, the ONLY option in a hard battle is to turtle.
Although, I actually think Valkyria Chronicles handled it the best. You could make risky maneuvers and lose characters, but they would be stuck wherever they fell. If the enemy reached them first, that character would be permadead. However, if someone from your own team reached them first, they would call in medics to have them extracted (and you could potentially redeploy them a few turns later from one of your captured bases). That system was flexible while still making you nervous for your fallen allies.

I've been saying since the first Bravely Default for the 3DS that we now have the soul of where Final Fantasy went, and it isn't in the mainline titles it's-
Bravely Default(1, Second, and 2), Octopath Traveler, and now Triangle Strategy.
I've been excited, and have enjoyed these games more than anything SE has released since the PS2. Besides Dragon Quest, but that's its own thing. Also the battle system in bravely default/Octopath is actually strategic, you don't just spam your current most powerful attack. People always claimed JRPGs were more strategic, but they really weren't. I love their battle system, and Triangle Strategy doesn't have it at least not early game, but it kept one aspect the points to spend on actions which I really like. Great job variety. While I would of liked if you could changed jobs this is still a great Strategy RPG. The story is also really good. Deep, mature, and realistic. Definitely a must play for RPG fans

Yoshinari Kitase is in charge of Mainline Final Fantasy releases and therefore he decides how the re releases of old games go. Great director but clearly isn't prioritizing that stuff over FF 7 Remake and other stuff
Tomoya Asano, who did the DS remakes for FF 3 and 4, then Bravely and Octopath, and in general is in charge of all of these HD-2D releases
You wanna talk about the Saga and Mana re-releases, those ALSO have different producers in those series, so yeah there's no unified approach for releasing old games at Square at all because of who wants to do what differing greatly

I wish there were more than the travel banters to show interaction between the characters, but they really helped flesh out their relationships. I feel it definitely lived up to all of the positive reviews and it’s hype. It was a well written and thick story. My only negatives toward it was wishing there were more “real” battles in game. The number of them I mean. A little too heavy on the amount of dialogue. I enjoy extensive and fleshed out dialogue in games, but not so much when there can be an hour that goes by of just watching/listening to characters stand there and speak. Then maybe get a 10 minute battle and back to the long stretch of dialogue. It just happens too often in the game, it’s very unbalanced in that regard, for me anyhow. I still enjoyed the game for what it was but not sure I’ll play a second time.

Really great review! I will admit to being a defender of the English dub, as some of the direction can be frustrating in the sense that some scenes might not be as emotionally driven as it could be, but when the actors get their lines JUST right, you can have some really striking moments. I think the JP audio is definitely going to have more consistency, and I intend to use it on my second playthrough, but I think the English dub has merit in its moments.

I have a very hard time absorbing information if the dialogue and text don't match, and I pretty much need to still read along with the spoken lines as well when playing a game or it just doesn't work for me, so even if it were terrible I'd prefer English. That said, I think I'm slightly more qualified to point out a terrible dub from a great one. ...This one is good. Not fantastic, not bad, not horrible, and above decent. It's good: serviceable by all accounts and standout in some.

I started the demo of Octopath and after putting in 30m I think I still haven't had one combat scenario. I'm hesitant to commit bc the writing so far in the demo is really not good. I'm curious about these two games, though.
Would you recommend this game over octopath ?

If you’re a half hour into Octopath you’re probably 10 minutes away from your first battle scenario. I love the battle system in Octopath, it’s like a mix of FF7, Chrono Trigger, and even like Pokemon in certain ways, so definitely play a little longer.

Dunno if you've played any of the bravely default games. But the co bat system is reminiscent of those titles. Just saving turns has a different affect. Starts out a little slow but its a good game. Jist don't expect a shit ton of character development with party interactions. Each story focuses primarily on the character you choose and the other people are basically along for the ride. Its intended that you play through with each character to get their stories/development.

You can't skip your turn hitting B too many times. If you hit B during the select direction to end turn it'll go back to the turn menu. You'd have to hit B, B, A to end your turn. B, B, B just puts you back to start of turn. If it does You changed an option(maybe) and you should reset to default or find which one it is.
Also if you don't want to read Don't set the voice acting to Japanese! You can press ZR and every scene will just play out like a movie you can watch/listen to. I really don't understand why people change to a language they cannot understand, and then complain they have to read. Are that many people slow where this doesn't cross your mind?

@@maximeroux-lacroix7219 you haven't watched any reviews then. Every one of them mentions too much reading, and mention choosing JP dub. How can you know it has bad English when you've selected Japanese? I know he hasn't tried English because he says often the JP just says 1-2 words but screen shows multiple sentences. He would know the English does that too Because those sections aren't voice acted. The NPC just says a short phrase when you select them. So it is obvious he is like many weebs who chooses JP on default, says EN is bad without ever trying it. Then says there is too much reading.
This is so common, and so cringe. Many games say the JP voice acting is great but if you translate the JP review they complain of the JP voice acting same as English speakers do their own. What they don't(and I mean never) do is choose English option. That is something only westerners do, and it is embarrassing you people praise it so, but are too lazy to actually learn it to judge it properly

Also you can 100% get every upgrade I've already done it with every character. Just use Lionel and get that extra money for picking up spoils, also the golden pinkie ring helps a ton with farming materials. Also also use the auto play feature, why would you ever manually go through text?

What I'm loving is how trying to be the never give up honourable idealist of RPG tradition is making things almost impossible for me. Trying to repel the invasion without burning the town took everything I had, I could only do it because Anna and Hughette were absolutely broken and I managed to bug out the general's AI. I knew I could have made the easy choice, but I wanted to see how it would pan out if I was full on naïve like most protagonists.
My girlfriend is not so idealistic in her approach, she took a more pragmatic approach. So her story is wildly different, she has different troops, and her strategies are nothing akin to mine. I'm more the wear them down from range before a decisive charge kind of guy. She's more of a brutal all our assault kind of gal. The difference gives us so much to talk about, asking why we made those decisions, what it says about who we are.

Yeah, if I had to point to just one thing that could be called a legitimate blunder with this game, it's the lack of character portraits attached to dialogue boxes. Hitting a button to bring up a profile with the full art just does not substitute. Seeing that face when someone is talking is hardwired into the human social instinct, it's how you attach what's being said to who's saying it. Wonder if that's the kind of thing they could patch in? I do love the ellipses with the ridiculous sound effect attached, though.
Also, I don't think Anna is objectively Over Powered, she's just mechanically really fun to use in a way that feels very powerful. The gameplay is well balanced to account for her role in combat. True to her archetype, she's a jack of all trades actually done right. Just harder to notice since you have her from the start before a lot of the trades she borrows from even show up. I'm so glad there's a new game in the footsteps of Final Fantasy Tactics and Tactics Ogre (although the game it's probably most mechanically similar to is Vandal Hearts) for this day and age that's actually good.

I recently tried replaying Golden Sun, and there's so much dialogue, but nobody SAYS anything, or they've made their point in the first couple of sentences and then just talk in circles and emote for what feels like ages. For those that have played Triangle Strategy, is the dialogue long like Golden Sun, or is it just that characters actually have a lot to say? I don't mind a lot of text when it's actually in service of something and not repetitious.

Lol T.S. dialog feels so bland imo, and it's overkilled. I am a lover of almost all things jrpgs, always have been since nes days- this game is very slow in its story telling, almost everything else is triple aaa imo, minus the exploration phase which is basically running around in town or wherever and talking w your party and npc's, finding a few hp potions etc. and pressing start to exit. The areas are tiny! It's not terrible, I think I was expecting too much...
