I'm 30 hours in. This is the 2nd best game on the Switch, followed closely behind Zelda Breath of the Wild. It's the perfect game to pick up and play at either short or long intervals. Game pacing and difficulty is perfect. And the longer you play and upgrade your characters, the more you feel the progress you're making.
IMO the absolute best part is the bosses, and I don't usually say this. I've done 24 of them so far and only 1 has disappointed, purely just for being out of nowhere. Each and every other one has put a big goofy grin on my face, either because there's genuine stakes, interesting story beats, kickass music or a genuinely enjoyable mechanic
Statistic189 DO SOME RESEARCH THERE IS A DAMN PLOT. ALL 8 STOIRES CONNECT. MAYBE JUST SAY THAT YOU JUST AREN'T interested in the game or something other than the game ha no plot
scalabrine playoff 3pt 46% curry playoff 3pt 40% How are the graphics bad. NOT EVERY GAME NEEDS GRAPHICS TO GOOD. And wtf are you talking about random shitty encounters. If dragon quest and final fantasy games got away with this why does it make an difference in octopath
The success of games like this always make me chuckle at the adderall addicted kids who keep claiming that turn based combat has no place in RPGs anymore.
I pre-ordered the limited edition version of the game when I first saw the reveal trailer. When I finally played the demo on the switch, I attempted to get past the timer because the demo captivated me just that much. Once I received the game, I played it hours on end with "Primrose" as my main cause I'm an avid dancer/martial artist and I enjoy the idea of being a seductress to men ^_^. After beating the game with all the characters and leveling them all up to 80 and them some, I completed all the side quests, unlocked all the divine skills and then fought and destroyed Galdera the true secret boss after a 1 hour and 20 minute battle. This was by far best fight I had with a "hidden true boss" of any rpg in a while. The Battle music alone for the divine skills were epic and the boss battle music with Galdera was on a level similar to that of Parasite Eve's final secret boss in the Chrysler building in the EX game. I was hurt and sadden as a fan when this game won no awards at the american Video game awards and instead "Red Dead Redemption" took almost everything. The Japanese are masters at telling a captivating and soulful tugging story. To call this game a masterpiece is an injustice when a game of this clairvoyance and magnitude deserves the right to be called and deemed a "Magus Magnum Opus" of the highest crafted accord in its sector of role playing games. I hope that the prequel of this game gets a release or translation for switch. Last but not least the same year upon the release of this game, I traveled to Japan and bought the soundtrack of this game from its native lands. Kudos and respect to all the underappreciated voice actors who mastered their roles in this game and to the master symphony orchestra for delivering the music in this game on a level of Amadeus.
I feel Octopath traveler does a brilliant job at leaving the stories to your imagination. For example these individuals are only adventurers/travelers tackling at their own needs and coincidentally coming across others doing the same. While one is doing their quest in a village/town, the others are doing their own thing; Therion snagging a few items, Tressa bargaining, so on and so forth. they're really only helping each other when they really need it as they do in boss fights. I'm absolutely not saying that there are no flaws what so ever but i'm only implying that if you really think about it, there isn't so much. IMO this is a game that'll stay
The game has a bonus level that unites the stories, and also has a part in where you learn by talking to the people; a lot about the characters and the world. So you all saying it doesn't have any story are wrong. Plus each character has its own journey/story.
A little add-in bit at the end doesn't really make up for ongoing interaction over the course of a few dozen hours though, does it? They could have done interesting things in terms of character interaction, but apparently just chose not to out of laziness. Bummer. I'll still buy the game.....just not at $60.
9 out of 10? Excellent review but imo I believe and 8 out of 10 is better. What's killing it for me is the repetitive dungeons and plot "layout"? What I mean is, you start a tale, talk to a few people (later in the game you use that character's special ability to progress), go to a boring dungeon and kill the boss. What I enjoyed most was exploring to new areas and challenging my team with monsters way above my level
As does everyone else on the planet who's ever played Chrono Trigger, except for the other guy who commented for some bizarre reason. I remember I was so excited for Chrono Cross. I bought the game without even bothering to rent it first, because how could it possibly not be fantastic being the sequel to Chrono Trigger? And everyone loved it too, which reassured me even more. Needless to say, I was extremely disappointed to find out it was nothing like Chrono Trigger. My sister (who was also a huge Chrono Trigger fan) was just as disappointed. Neither one of us liked that game. At least the music was phenomenal, but that alone couldn't save it.
The story and the fact there're no puzzles (switches, levers, block pushing, etc) in dungeons or paths are the only aspects of the game I'm not fond of. It makes me wish there was more than only just small dead ends with chests. Then again I'm still less than 10 hours in, so who knows. Everything else is phenomenal: The music, the art and the combat.
Lexyvil as far as i go (im nearly 20 hours into the game), i havent found any dungeon puzzles either. But for me its made up by the sidequests which actually needs some thinking to solve, often requiring you to use the character's ability, which (as far as i know) was unheard of in previous JRPG titles
I really want to try this game, but I am not sure if I am ready for a jrpg. I have to be completely in the "mood" for one. My tolerance for them are 1 for every few years lol
hmm my best suggestion would probably try old jrpg games to get the feel of it then try the demo so you can appreciate the improvements of new generation take on old jrpg.
Manko Slayer I totally feel the same way. I just don’t have the time or patience for most of them any more. As you age, real life takes a whole lot more time than schooling did back when we were kids.. though, I started this one and 15 hours in I feel as if I just have to finish it at this point, lol.
Sakutaro〈3musik I wouldn’t go as far as saying it’s perfect. As an example, I felt Tressa’s story was written as a tack-on to other stories. She doesn’t encounter reoccurring enemies or have a high level goal. And her ending just reinforces this. I gave up hope on her arc as soon as Esmeralda came in, she came out of absolutely nowhere and didn’t add stakes to the final battle for Tressa. Now that I’ve finished the entire game the only interesting hook her story has to the main story is the fact that the author of her notebook is the father of Kit, who was used to summon Galdera
I've only been really addicted to playing 5 games in my life, and they were all action game (ie re4). Never liked an rpg, until octopath, I have become addicted. Don't know why but can't sleep.
My only few disappointments of the game is that the narrative for each characters are kept seperate, sure you have the option to speak to your own party members here in there but it hinders the structure of a good plot. and the dungeons or caves leading up to the boss fights all pretty much look the same. Incredible game though, this is IMO a love letter to the fans of old turn based JRPGS. Hope they continue with these games in the future as theres still a strong fan base of these type of games
Love letter? That's laughable because I loved lovable characters, tragic deaths or events and fantastic catchy music. This game is lacking those and the music wasn't bad but far from catchy.
That background lore that connects the 8 almost completely separate stories at the end... isn't really worth it to me. Well, the over the top stories of SNES and such era games aren't that interesting in respect. It is fun to play though.

ChocolateAsian9000 this game runs off Unreal Engine 4. The 3ds cannot run UE4 even at low settings. angelgodric Well, the combat is amazing, music, character designs, etc. Plus 90+ hours of story, and there’s plenty of side quests to increase the play time. Because of all of this, it’s worth $60.
Try the demo and see if you like it because it may not be as strong in the story department as other games, but its game play, graphics, and soundtrack are phenomenal.
Dakota Colley Great reasoning buddy, really proved your point there! Seriously though if you're going to bash a game at least use some brain cells and give legitimate reasons instead of "Hurr durr it bad and switch sucks haha lol"
First it's not a unique idea, you ever heard of the game SaGa Frontier? I never liked that game for the same reason. I my try it someday via emulation but most likely not because the story telling looks horrendous and the battle system looks tedious. But to each there own, if you enjoy playing it then that's good but for me if I want a game that's supposed to be like Final Fantasy VI (and this game most diffidently isn't) I'll play Final Fantasy VI itself, now that is a JRPG with a awesome epic story and a battle system that is a joy to use. :)
Randy Salsman All RPGS have the same story yet with octopath it's a damn problem. Persona 5 story was basic af. Almost every final fantasy game has the same story with different characters and events that all lead up. and there is an story beat all 8 of them do an certain side quest and unlock how all the stories are connected
To me it feels like lazy writing, can't think of a good single epic story so lets just write a bunch of short stories. Boring. Even if the story was good there's still that tedious battle system, I prefer a more straight forward battle system like Final Fantasy games had till the latter ones which I don't care for, like Chrono Trigger (do I have to say more about that game lol) and The 7th Saga. I can play these games over and over. Go back and play those games and see if they're not much better then this game.
Randy Salsman How is it lazy writing there is an epic story that connects all the story. So in that case all rpgs copied of dragon quest for the whole save the world bs imo.
I want to see a GOLDEN SUN next game that looks like this game
Guys, this game has a secret final boss that is worth 60$ by itself. Just saying
I have yet to play Zelda, but if it tops this game, then I know what my next purchase will be.
My gosh...cancel whatever Saturday plans you had, purchase Zelda, and play it. It’s far better than Octopath
LOL. I will be sure to buy it. Thanks for the recommendation.
Bender2497 I enjoyed Octopath but it got too competitive towards the end.
BoTW has way more flaws than Octopath.
For one basically no story.
So far this is my GoTY 2018, such a masterpiece, I know I'll be humming the music in the game for years, so memorable and polished.

False, you need a plot. This game has no plot. That's a fucking disgrace to any jrpg.

8 of em in fact.
Those are not plots, those are character stories. There is a huge fucking difference. Gtfo

I just started this game and it's absolutely incredible....
One of the more under appreciated part of this game is the UI. God I love this game's UI
first time I've ever heard them make something this positive, halfway through and not a single negative thing
The sharp point of focus with exaggerated focus blur is known as a 'tilt shift lens effect'
The success of games like this always make me chuckle at the adderall addicted kids who keep claiming that turn based combat has no place in RPGs anymore.
Not only kids, also certain devs who said turn based combat is outdated *glares over to a specific guy at square enix regarding FFVII remake*
numbers are intimidating to some 😂

To be honest, I didn't think I would enjoy this game before I played the demo. I was never this wrong about a video game in my life.

Sakutaro〈3musik I wouldn’t go as far as saying it’s perfect. As an example, I felt Tressa’s story was written as a tack-on to other stories. Is adding a new resource innovation, really?
Characters only earn BP at the end of turns in which they haven’t been used

This game is lacking those and the music wasn't bad but far from catchy.
This is worth it
bravely default is better
Made by the exact same people.
Dagund5 yeah but bravely still better!
graphics wise the the blurr filter used is too tense. its jarring. imo
9/10. Awesome review.
The best thing about this game was that it went to Gamepass day one and saved me from wasting money on a game I didn't end up liking
Nice review, great game. Thanks, guys :)
Tbh the style reminds me of Paper Mario in terms of depth etc
That background lore that connects the 8 almost completely separate stories at the end... isn't really worth it to me. Well, the over the top stories of SNES and such era games aren't that interesting in respect. It is fun to play though.
My personal top 10 games of all time.
Great colors
played it on gamepass. overhype by reviewers. The story is blend and doesnt make sense when u have a party of 4 as it acts out like only one character is going thru the chapters. For example, Tresser chapter 2 story when she was BULLIED by the town guards, I have OLBERIC (greatest swordsman in the realm), Primrose (also one of the the best fighter/"assasin" in the realm) and both of them are assumed to be non-existent. Poor programming.
GP saved me money on this one.
The dancer's story was great to start but then I found myself finding more and more flaws and annoyances with the game
My recommendations gave me a trashy reviewer of this game. He was a hater.
This video has restored the feeling toward this game again. And my heart overall.
Quit saying that the stories do not connect and that there is no overarching narrative. Factually, its wrong and its been proven. Why do reviewers simply put, get this wrong? Do they not finish games before they review?
i'm loving this game
How can you mention "Bravely Default" and not tell us fans it's the same dev team working on Octopath.

BattleModeBainbridge get your information right Silicon Studio did not make this game thanks for trying though 😂😂😂
@Epic Troy are you fucking serious dude? Ever tried researching a topic before talking stupid.

BattleModeBainbridge it’s ok to be half right. Own that shit.
the character do interact, and the storys combine at the end. But I really prefer having different storys
Finished the game, and its definitely NOT a 9. Voice acting is very inconsistent and sometimes even annoying altho the music is very good, the mediocre story of most characters goes from being boring to being ok. The pacing in the game is a problem too, and difficulty spikes in some dungeons don't help it either. Most of the secrets and routes are hidden with objects blocking your view, so you'll have to hug every wall and walking into the background makes it even worse because of the camera. Its by no means a bad game, its a pretty ok jrpg, but not a 9 by far. A 7/10 would be more fitting as I'm being slightly generous.
I year later I hope you have realized that people have different opinions and a pathetic review number means nothing
I love alfyn and tressa but their stories are pointless (the worse for me)
Too bad this isn’t on 3DS... I wonder if it even can 🤔
ChocolateAsian9000 this game runs off Unreal Engine 4. The 3ds cannot run UE4 even at low settings. I don't understand how everyone can praise this game as something unique among even its own kind, while simultaneously describing without stating the game's core appeal as a shallow and content-lacking retread of Bravely Default. It's actually maddening to see so many outlets heap praise on this game, and hold it above others for doing what those games it's specifically held above do markably better.
gigastrike2. Can say the same with every overpraised games that exists to be honest
Ummm, nostalgia sells like HotCakes?
I hope that final fantasy 7 comes as octopath traveler.
I want to play all character's story.
Square enix as of now dont have the narrative as cool or great as they had.
I dont even think ff7 remake will be here by 2025.... they should just make octopath travelers version. Stories interact and solves a problem
Sorry bravery default and second had a way better story making it better xD..
William James I don't agree.
I know right I hated it in octopath where each chapter later in the game made you fight the same 4 bosses again and again!
default was still good that may of been the worse part but bravery second was stupidly good sorry but 8 characters in octopath are so fucking cliched and boring there done right but i only bother with half of the storys in the game mainly due to the lack of voice acting...
cmon man gimme your opinion don't just say i don't agree ^^
btw the people who made bravery default also made this game i mean jesus christ even the brave/default system is in the game lul
Why is $59 dollars? The Witcher 3 and Zelda was the same price, did the same work and cost when into this game.
angelgodric ?
angelgodric Well, the combat is amazing, music, character designs, etc. Plus 90+ hours of story, and there’s plenty of side quests to increase the play time. Because of all of this, it’s worth $60.
The character stories never intertwine into a greater narrative..
BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
You obviously didn't finish the game. LMFAO!
Can we get this game on the mobile so EVERYONE can enjoy it?
The Swtich needs exclusives.
Well.. No proper story, no game for me.. I expected more.....
jozef taliga well I mean the game technically has 8 stories
Angry Smurf 8 shallow, generic chapters... Nothing story is there Lol
Try the demo and see if you like it because it may not be as strong in the story department as other games, but its game play, graphics, and soundtrack are phenomenal.
jozef taliga
"8 shallow, generic chapters..." That you also know nothing about since you don't have the game and only listened to this single review.
Dakota Colley Great reasoning buddy, really proved your point there! Seriously though if you're going to bash a game at least use some brain cells and give legitimate reasons instead of
"Hurr durr it bad and switch sucks haha lol"
It not having a single epic story is a deal breaker for me.
Personally, I think it's a unique idea. A breath of fresh air in a genre where basically every game has a 1 way trip to a demon lord at the end.

All RPGS have the same story yet with octopath it's a damn problem.

How is it lazy writing there is an epic story that connects all the story. So in that case all rpgs copied of dragon quest for the whole save the world bs imo.
