Web DM would you guys be willing to put the under water game on save or dice or web dm plays?...
Is it too OP to allow the Hexblade Warlock start with a uncommon magic weapon based on their other choices? Like a Trident of Fish Command for a Triton Hexblade Bladelock?
Sam Bro- Land Between Two Rivers: Aquatic Adventures in the Poisoned Sea is on RUclips.com/webdmplays right now!
@@WebDM forgot you're right thank you
Tritons really should have darkvision, how can they even see in the ocean depths?
Yay, they got it! I know I wasn't the only one who thought that, and it seems WoTC agreed too.
I guess they have some sort of bioluminescent creatures to light up their cities
They talk to fish. They just go: "Hey, you, what direction is the city?"
Personally I'd make the Tritons bioluminescent and give them the Dancing light cantrip, anything to make them visually distinct from the Water Genasi and Sea Elves.
Shores, continental shelves, kelp farms, and coral reefs are environments for them, also to deal/trade with dry land people. The depths are akin to underdarkish aquatic area and they are more "surface" aquatic, less aboleth or kraken deep.
I would skin it as blindsight, but only in water (sonar-ish)
I love the idea of a Christopher Columbus-type Triton who goes around “discovering” the wonders of the surface world while everyone around them just thinks things like “Yeah, it’s a cactus, it doesn’t need much water, no big deal”
Triton orca cavalry with coral plate armor and stringray lances off to slay the megalodon.
I would so play that adventure.
@@gideonwaithbraite
Right?!
Naren Gurrier-Jones Air genasi and just hold your breath indefinitely!
Do they just hold on to them?
I like the idea of a triton society that is like the Mongols, just a semi-nomadic horse-ridding society that can sneak into the cities they are seiging by way of their water structures.
D*ck dude that cool as heck, giant seahorses as riddable mounts, sneaking up your rivers, hiding in wells
Nice
Maybe they have a few Sorcerers (or Druids, or whatever) that cause tidal waves. Suddenly, the city is flooded, the defenders up to their necks in water, while the Tritons can ride their sea mounts in and plunder at their leisure.
I see these sorts as the ones who would ride giant crabs, so they can stay mounted and effective even when stepping onto land. Giant seals or walruses could the same purpose, albeit slower and more cumbersome. Then again, a giant mammal flopping and crawling around is still a threat, and more than most city defenders can handle.
This gives me ideas for using the imagery of the curl of ocean waves being horse manes. Imagine mounted Tritons riding ashore, their mounts transforming as they contact the beach.
Hoping for Lizardfolk soon. Got a player that wants to play a Lizardfolk Forge Cleric when Descent into Avernus comes out. He needs some inspiration.
If you're looking for lizard people inspiration I can heartily direct you towards Warhammer Fantasy and Age of Sigmar. The lizardmen and Seraphon present a different take on the barbarian jungle people that lizardfolk often get stuck with.
I’m also hoping for Lizardfolk soon. Just made one for a campaign and it’s so much fun. I’d love to hear what Web DM has to say about them.
I made a Triton Barbarian that was Path of the Storm Herald. Pretty good thematically, though at 6th level I could already breathe underwater and had a swim speed, so the only thing I got was lightning resistance.
Honestly I'd house rule in something to replace those things or make you just stat wise better at them.
I'd give ya something like a increased swim speed and maybe red gills (Like the red gill sharks) allowing you to hyper oxinate your blood for a for some like nasty rush down attack...
Things fitting thematically but not stat wise is always a disappointment
@@dustrockblues7567 Unless you have a DM that will work with you
I had a Triton Barbarian/Fighter that took Path of the Totem Warrior but replaced the Totems with Aquatic ones. So she had Orca Spirit instead of Wolf.
In the saltmarsh campaign I'm playing right now, we have a Triton fighter who is on land for the first time and he hasn't learned the land dweller ways of life. So in session freaking one, the monk decides to start a bar fight (with the law enforcers as we later found out), and the Triton, who doesn't understand the ways of a bar fight, took his trident and skewered one of the crowns guard. We later found out that this guard retired after healing from his wound. It was pretty amusing.
I’m playing a Triton Great Old One Warlock at the moment. As a child, he was gonna be sacrificed as the vessel of his cult’s eldritch horror, but another Great Old One saved his life and he’s been a wanderer ever since.
I tried to take the ocean horrors kind of vibe with him. He can’t speak, and so communicates almost entirely through spells and telepathy. He has tentacle hair that can transform into beholder eyes at the tips, which is why he can cast eldritch blast and why he has a bunch of sight invocations. He’s gonna ultimately be reclassing into a Hexblade/Grave Cleric later down the line though since he rolled well on his stats, but my DM’s allowed me to keep the GOO spells, since it’s the same patron.
The best thing about Aquaman was every conversation ended with an explosion
Love your videos. I think an interesting video topic would be Warforged. They are one of my favorite races in d&d
That intro
The betrayal that no one saw coming q_ q
Jim you madman. Now i have to plan an aquatic campaign.. TO THE DUNGEON!
Super excited for the new race series! Glad to get an aquatic race with Ghosts of Saltmarsh and Jim’s Adventures on The Poison Sea!
I play A Triton War Cleric that was kicked out of his kingdom for an affair with royalty. Absolutely love the RP options with the race
My first character was a Triton Tempest Cleric, in a campaign set entirely on land. Playing the "fish out of water" was pretty fun.
Literally just made a Triton Warlock character yesterday to play in a one on one campaign with my BF. Perfect timing with this video!!
You guys upload these videos constantly at the best time. Looking for something to watch? Boom Web DM just uploaded 10 minutes ago.
That's the idea!
The way Jim looks at that trident at the end. That's love folks lol
I once played the dragonborn equivalent of a Triton, as a dragonborn who came from a turtle dragon. Fun times.
[Under the Sea starts blaring in the distance]
(Weens Ocean Man intensifies)
A Triton casting thunderwave: a gigantic clap. Makes so much sense. I really wanna do this now.
Something else about an underwater campaign: you don’t really need the fly spells but you can have all the fun with terrain elevation that flying normally grants you. Want to have a fight in a canyon where you’re moving from one side to another, then you can cross it like you were flying but no need for the spell.
There's a lot of fun to be had with vertical dungeons. Though I can see why some DMs would be wary of engaging with it, since mapping out dungeons in 3D can be challenging.
@@Bluecho4 I've had an absolute blast DMing for a group that loved it. They were fighting in the narrow spots of a canyon, and so they were climbing and jumping on enemies to pin the tougher ones down to stab them. The Barbarian dropped an elbow. Underwater its a little less like wrestling but you can definitely play with elevation a lot without needing a wizard involved.
Wouldn't water walk spell be the most OP under water!?xD it's like a banishment spell! Up you go!
My favorite PC and NPC is a Triton named Naroma Bluesides. She was a Triton scout who took an interest in merchant vessels, eventually helping one fight off pirates. She then took the Captain's offer to join his crew for two years, where she learned to be a swashbuckling rogue.
I'm planning a campaign around and under the sea of fallen stars it's a great place and fun to read about
I’m a fairly new player and my first character just got mauled to death by shadowy dogs :’( so I’ve been coming up with a new character and decided to go with a Triton circle of the stars Druid. Reading into the sea of fallen stars for background has been so much fun, dragon turtles and seawolves, Umberlee and Deep Sashelas, it’s amazing stuff
returning because this channel is and will always be the greatest
I’ve been looking into making a triton wizard. The whole idea would be Ariel from little mermaid who studied magic under Ursula.
Cool
Wait so there might be portals into other planes under the sea in Dungeons and Dragons?
Ok I’m definitely going to have to do like a Pacific Rim style campaign
This was a great episode guys, lots of lesser talked about stuff that makes the overall world of D&D more interesting!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I took my triton in a diplomatic direction as well. He's a bard who works as a cultural ambassador to the surface world with the overall goal of helping his people build bridges and gain allies. He does this by being a troubadour in a traveling band up and down the coast. He has tendrils in place of hair that look vaguely like octopus tentacles, and because it he has a special affinity for the octopus as a creature. He also learned common from sailors, so he swears like it's nothing at all to him.
Speaking with animals in a limited way is always super fun. It's been 3 years since I had a 1 shot where my sister was a player, and they came into a room with a couple giant crabs and about a dozen regular crabs. She, a forest gnome, used speak with small beasts to give the small crabs orders in the form of a complex plan of attack against the giant crabs. It involved waves of attack, the players giving backup, and sharing a reward of giant crab meat. The crabs' response? "No, my sand." Speaking with beasts doesn't mean those beasts are smart. That's still an inside joke between everyone that was at the table.
You guys are startin' ta get tha' Innsmouth look.
Thanks for posting! This was a great episode that really sparks the imagination
yes jonathan!! i made a noble triton warlock hexblade too! he's got the inheritor background and his inheritance is the trident his father used to have and was given to his older brother as an heirloom..but he felt a pull from the weapon and so stole it and ran off with it
My boyfriend is playing a noble hexblade triton too, lol. He has a sword as his weapon though, more of a scimitar/falchion.
I grew up watching these videos, and as I rewatch all the videos, in which I already watched in high school, I'm going to post this comment. I love you guys, and y'all have gotten me through some tough times. The second I get out of college and get a stable job, I will definitely become a web demon.
Great stuff. I love the ideas you have for flavoring the spells and adjusting for an underwater adventure. I never really gave Tritons a second thought. Also, I love how you guys have Jim behind a decidedly Castle Greyskull looking mini set. That brings back such great memories.
With the release of "Mythic Odysseys of Theros", Tritons now have dark vision, good. :)
So, I'm looking at a Pacific Rim type game, with the Tritons being but one empire under the oceans, and even though they don't all get along, they're far too busy keeping the Kaiju of EPoW from crossing over to the Prime Material to worry about the childish and ill considered surface dwellers.
I just need a hero to cancel the apocalypse.
Feel like Kickstarter needs a book of Fish/underwater races beyond JUST Triton and Tortle. Octopus race? Starfish race? Shark race? Whale race?
Water genasi, sea elves, merfolk..
I want all of the creepy races shown in Aquaman
I don’t even wait to watch their whole video anymore. I just hit “thumbs up” as soon as it loads.
Thank you for your endorsement!
I loved all the ideas for different player character Triton's and the thing about the reskinned Yuan Ti
To this day, a Triton Paladin of Ancients is one of my favourite characters I have played. 17 Charisma, 16 Strength, 14 Con, 13 Wisdom, 10 Dex, 8 Int. Bronze armour and weapons. An inspiration to his companions and a fearsome warrior, though more the former than the latter in actuality.
my ocean invasion campaign is 2 years in the works, then again so is my ancient undead golem campaign
My campaign setting could really use this. I have Lizardfolk originate as underwater civilizations and honestly tritons can slip right in there
I made a Triton Bloodhunter a couple weeks ago. Pact of the Lycan but he turns into a wereshark.
Street Sharks XD
JAWSOME!!!
I have about seven 5e characters across different campaigns- I have a Triton that was an Arcane Archer warrior of the sea legions far in east. He went to war at some point and fell (sunk?) in battle and woke upon the shores of the sword coast, literally the other side of the world with strange powers manifesting as divine soul sorcery. This is where I started the game, blessed or cursed or simply chosen by Umberlee. I often would set up a wall of water, send some ice spells through it to freeze part of it and then use that as cover to pop out with my harpoon gun (crossbow) and shoot up the enemy.
That campaign fizzled out and he joined the other semi-retired characters in my beyond account.
love the keith baker shoutout! his blog is amazing, even if you’re not playing eberron
He's amazing! And a super nice guy.
Loved this!!! Keep it coming guys! Hopefully you guys cover Warforged or Lizardfolk soon!
>Defend aquatic home from portals to other dimensions
Why did Cruel Angel's Thesis just start playing?
If I were to do combat session breaks for a heavy roleplay campaign, a city defending itself from a monster-of-the-week style attacks would be cool.
A gunsmith/ alchemist character in my pathfinder game was afraid he'd be useless in an underwater quest I had, until he discovered the AOE of lighting. He killed a lot of sahuagin that way.
I once used Sycnus, a triton with the Unearthed Arcana Sea sorcerer subclass in an eberron campaign.
Horizon walker Ranger seems a perfect fit with the tritons cannon backstory
Let’s not forget the lobster folk from tomb of annihilation
Tritons should sound like they're breathing helium whenever they're breathing air.
Awesome video, loving the race vids recently. So that being said, we getting gith soon?
we already got Githyanki so Githzerai are probably soon
@@colinbunn6066 I must have missed that one, unless it's the gish video?
@@lukerogan1505 yep, you're right. Another channel did Gith recently. So I'm with you, can't wait to see their take.
god the coincidence :) so in yesterday´s session I had two new players so we made a short adventure outside of the main storyline. We had a Triton and a Water genasi, they met Kuo Toa, got biten by a Reef Shark and fought Sahuagin that were taking refuge in a abandoned Umberlee temple. Made me definitely want to involve more water settings and creatures into the main plot. Thank you for all your videos and hard work!
I play a level 12 Triton Ranger in a primarily land based campaign, (currently we are in space). She was part of an elite undersea Ranger force for her kingdom initially before joining the party. I enjoy playing her as a awkward fish out of water. She has super high charisma making her a great diplomat though when not "On" she is terrible awkward and says things that could be considered offensive, but she is just trying to learn everything she can about the lands currently above the surface. Everyone else is just as strange to her as she is to them.
Currently in the Saltmarsh campaign playing a Triton Coast Druid and it fits perfectly
Your timing is perfect! I was thinking of making a triton character since my cleric just died
Love your videos guys keep up the awesome vids
Thanks for bringing love this time, hatebringer
The race videos are solid
giving yuan-ti video a run for its money with dat intro sponsor ;) but as always a thoughtful discussion that leaves me wanting to play some D&D so mission accomplished!
I made a setting where there was an alliance of fish empires that kept all the surface dwellers isolated from one another to prevent war
I just realised you guys never did videos for the volos races. Hopefully this is the start of them cause if love to hear you talk about firbolgs
My Triton had a sea lion therapist named Doctor Mister Whiskers. He gave great advice.
Great video as always!
Now I feel like if I cast fireball underwater, I should keep some lemon and melted butter handy. New damage type: steam damage.
My Triton character, Joran Mernimier plays a swashbuckler who acts a sellssword/interpreter. His mother was impregnated by a legendary human pirate captain named Greenbeard. My character often serves in roles as being a mercenary, a mediator, or a privateer. Varying on wherever the money is. He also is incredibly arrogant but has a huge soft side for Orcs and smaller individuals like gnomes; and often will pay for a tables food without ever admitting he picked up the tab.
He's a proud warrior, but also a deviant in the sense he'll often partake in backroom dealings resorting in crazy interludes when campaign is run by a decent DM. He rolled a six for character quirk and is honestly always impressed and is convinced that humans are pretending not to know of his underwater race and heritage.
At some point, I want him to go blind so he can acquire some enchanted goggles. Should prove to be a humbling chapter in this character's life.
Fascinating topic!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Ever since Volo's came out, I've really wanted to play an anglerfish Triton GOO Warlock that leans heavy into Lovecraftian themes
Triton's get that CHA bump due to the inherent erotism of the sea.
Alright Jotaro Kujo, calm down there
I think I want to make a paladin triton, taking influence from not just aquaman but Thor and Wonder Woman. I’d either go oath of ancients or more likely oath of heroism
Subnatica is a good source for inspiration for water adventure
Can you guys do an episode on my favorite race in D&D? The Genasi.
I agree
3rd show in row with david bowie, 10/10 have seen again. THX for the shows guys!
First homebrew spell to make, has got to be: Chum Cloud. Or better yet, make that the way that all of your druid summon spells manifest, a spray of chum and then the creatures appear out of the muck and mire.
Mystara had a very active undersea setting along with Campaign Setting for it! Wasn't there also a set of modules for it?
The Kopru had an entire undersea empire with a long history between them and the Sea Elves, Mermen, and Ixic. not getting along.
The Aboliths have entire underwater cities (you did mention this). Including one under the Isle of Dread (it ended up in the Elemental Water Plane - in fact it was mostly likely moved there following the Abolith reclaiming their city following the events of The Savage Tide).
Just in time! I'm about to play a Triton Paladin of the Crown for a game in which the gods have disappeared, and because of that these threats of the depths are more dangerous, so my character was sent to the land to find out if the gods of the land have lost their powers as well.
Also you've totally gotta use one of my favorite animals! : the vampire squid
Now, I want to mix the Far Traveler with the Noble variant, and stick it to a high charisma Triton, as an ambassador of the sea. Oath of the Ancients Paladin.
I love the way Tritons were depicted in Gemstone IV. They're very high level and much more monstrous than they're usually drawn in D&D books. That's how I'm writing them into my setting, and how they're set apart from merfolk, who are the more standard "water dudes".
Oh man your closing comments made me immediately think of Two Flower from the first couple terry pratchett books... two flower the merman paladin is just bizarre enough to work.
Amphibious humanoids would be these main dealers of resources which could only be taken from the surface world. Shipwrecks would be almost like alien spacecraft depending on how much surface stuff your underwater denizens had encountered.
I am living for this. I made a Triton Paladin of the vengeance oath. She has earned the name Spinebreaker for all the baddies she was broken with with her bare hands or over her knee. My husband and DM are excited to take our party to the sea.
I am reworking sea races for my island world where there are far more sea creatures than land creatures and the sea creatures used to subjegate the Terrans. It's great to see more videos of sea creatures. Some great ideas, guys! You guys should do a whole episode about underwater adventures. It would be totally helpful! Maybe a little about creating underwater civilizations? Just a suggestion...
I’ve got a character idea that I’ve wanted to do for a Triton, with a Banneret (purple dragon knight) fighter with mercenary veteran background. Concept is that they are officially a free agent that is going around the port and fishing settlements and helping them train up to defend their settlements, but in actuality some great threat is coming and the triton know they can’t beat it and are going to use these people to be a distraction and cannon fodder.
After the race series is done will you do a series addressing the different official campaign settings?
Great intro, creative and hilarious
Suddenly visions of the movie water world with some little mermaid, and pirates of the Caribbean all mixed together into an ocean fairing world where land is scarce and the vast undersea empires rule the world while the surface peoples are just trying to survive. Yuan-ti sea snakes, lizard folk based on saltwater crocodiles or something, so many options so little time.
Edit: awesome vid! I find the mechanics interesting, but the more and rp potential to be engrossing. Thank you for going to far in those directions.
Been reading the Ghosts of Saltmarsh recently, in preparation for running through it as a campaign. I'm hoping a couple players make Tritons. Both for lore and mechanics, it would be a great pick. 😁
I played a Triton Oath of Ancients paladin for a one-shot, was really fun!
Oath of ancients, replaced the spectral vines with seaweeds.
Wow Kevin Costner can’t believe you went there lol awesome stuff as always I hate to admit I ignore the oceans but great ideas! Got my brain swimming lol
I'm probably going to need to utilize more water folk in my season 2 campaign.
I'm starting a campaign and I'm a Triton pirate. Would definitely recommend!
I bet hardly anyone played Tritons until Ghosts of Saltmarsh came out.
My first ever campaign two years ago, our Paladin was a Triton. My bard and him had a great goofy guy and Mr serious dynamic.
YES MY FAVE RACE
I could see fire spells working underwater though...I mean greek fire burns underwater so magical fire makes sense.
I'm starting a new campaign with a Triton on Sunday. JUST IN TIME
