Always great content! Thorough and great side tips. I'm about a year in to scooting, beginning some mods and upgrades, and find these videos quite helpful. More helpful than probably 90-95% of all other scooter tuning vids. I've got an itch for a motorcycle now but I'll always keep a scooter for sure!
I bought my cy50 T3 used with 49,000 on it and every weight thing had flat spots I fed a jump rope's rope down the spark plug hole with a bicycle spoke to keep the crank from spinning and break the nut loose of the variator
Great video. Thinking of looking at changing mine on my 100 yamaha aerox. Never opened it up since bought but it's only done 4.5000 miles.... It's alright but I think there is some slip or drop in acceleration. For now though. Thanks and excellent video. From Scotland. Happy New Year.
The whole variator kit only costs $19 (rollers, pulley, gear, variator, boss). Just replace it every few years and save hours of labor. Takes 10 minutes to swap out for a brand new unit
Not all variators cost $19 and you never learn anything if you don't try it. I fixed my Malossi variator that costs $100 with a $10 bushing after learning the process with this cheap variator and I've learned a bit about processes that I had never done before. This sort of thing isn't for everyone, but I enjoy learning and improving my skillset.
Great video’s thanks I just got a 1999 zuma cw50 it was sitting in a bedroom closet since 2002! Had no battery or gas and is in perfect condition I did clean oil tank and bleed oil injector new battery and air filter It started on first try and runs fine (1250 miles ) now my concern is bearing grease on all bearings which is beyond my skill and would cost a lot. Will grease last this long I’ve put about 50 miles on so far with no problems
Grease can last a very long time. Not sure how it's doing around 20 years in. Most bearings are lubed by engine or gear oil. Others like front wheel and steering can be checked. There are service manuals available for those scoots. I would suggest finding one. Should be very helpful and give you step by step directions and specs.
Great video, such detail, when replacing the rollers, does it matter how they go in? I noticed that one side shows the shiny gold ring on the roller, does it have to be in a certain direction? TY again
They're usually OK either way, but you could install them so the side with a coating is against whatever wall of the paths that it will contact when accelerating. So, whatever wall it will be slung into based on direction of rotation would have the coated side of the rollers facing it. That or check a manual, but most manuals won't bother to mention that.
Any idea where to get cover bushings for 139qmb gy6? I even bought a new cover , but it has no bushings! My starter bushing is worm severely, it may stop working, and the previous owner removed the kick starter! I also need the kick starter components! They even removed the main Stand, who knows what else they have done, I was told it just needed a carb, and exhaust, but when I seen it had low compression, and oil in the exhaust port, I did a bbk, since it needed rebuilding anyway, great video!!
I think I answered this question, maybe on another comment, but it popped up again. Anyway, try PartsForScooters. Look at their diagrams and they have most stuff.
Know of any reason gas gauge won't work ? Ive ruled out the sending unit . Whatever the problem its from the plug that the sending unit plugs into back to the gauge . Thanks
Well what you need in order to make long last for that bushing is just only light coat it with high viscosity grease I mean very thin coat is enough And check it for at least about 4000km And Recoat it again if needed
I haven't had much luck with grease on these small scoots. Seems to just make stuff stick to it and then it doesn't work as smoothly. What would be great is a sealed variator like some big scoots have, where seals help to keep the grease in, but that would still leave some coating of grease on the boss.
No matter how little grease i put on my variator, it always finds its way over to the inside of the clutch bell=slippage. Thats with a very thin film on the bushing.. once it gets a few miles on it it slips excessively on take off, take back apart and degrease clutch pads and bell
Hi, I have taken off many variatiors, Im tryn to get the variator off of my prescott 50i gy6 and the nut will not come off, I tried my usual torque wrench that always works and my buddy came by with large set of socket wrench and he couldnt do it, have you had a situation where you cant get the variator off and what did you do? Id hate to not be able to upgrade this scooter TY again!!!
I never use a torque wrench to remove fasteners. Install only. I use an impact wrench, or a good drill should do it these days. Otherwise, you'll need to hold the crank still while trying to remove the nut. Something like the affiliate link below is good to have around. amzn.to/3r43Sm8
I think it could do well with the radial load (spinning around), but the axial load (sliding in and out) may not be great for it. Also, can't really be lubricated unless you can machine it to accept seals on both ends.
Hey, I know this video is kinda old, but I am hoping you might still be monitoring the comments and may be able to help me. I have a 2014 TaoTao atm 50 a. It is my 2nd scoot in 5 yrs and I do all work myself. I have been having variator issues. I have now replaced it 4 times. It just keeps wearing out around the inner circumference, like where the bushing is. It ends up with too much play and causes rattling and if not replaced quick enough, will cause the belt to wear and eventually break. I have all washers and everything installed properly, and always make sure that I tighten the nut back down to the specified torque. I have, over time, in trying to troubleshoot this issue, replaced everything under the cvt cover with the exception of the crankshaft. Btw, when I first install a new variator, it will be fine for a couple of months, but around about 4-6 months in, that familiar rattling sound begins again and I remove the cvt cover and try to 'wiggle' the variator and, sure enough it has happened again! Do you have any idea what could be causing this? Its driving me crazy! Thank you in advance for any help you can offer!
Do you feel a vibration at any point? Something similar to a tire out of balance? I had a problem with a shaft causing vibes and it was leading to premature wear. These variators are kind of junk, and that's why I added a better bushing, but they shouldn't fail like they will if there's some sort of external influence.
90GTVert 90GTVert YES! I do! As a matter of fact I had my rear tire replaced and I thought that it might be out of balance, but I never related it to the variator problem because the tire replacement was after the variator problems had already started. So do you think that it is my crankshaft causing vibes, and therefore wearing out the variator? Or do you think that it is possible that my tire is out of balance (or rim may be bent, although, it doesn't look bent so it would have to be very slight if at all) could vibes from that cause wear on the variator? And btw, Thank you so much for your help!
Btw, I don't know if this will help, but I do seem to notice that when I first put in a new variator and everything is good and tight, with no play, the vibration is much stronger, then as time goes on and the variator shows more and more play, the vibes lessen. At the point when the variator is really loose and must be replaced, the vibes are almost unnoticeable. Its like whatever is causing the vibes is restricted by the nice, tight new variator, and therefore the vibes are felt stronger, then as the vibes loosen (wear out) the variator, they dissipate. I hope that makes sense.
I don't know of any super easy way to find out what the cause is. I inspected all parts of mine. I replaced bearings in the gearbox, checked shafts for runout, and all sorts of things.
90GTVert Ok, well I will just have to figure it out by taking it one part at a time. Good thing variators are a fairly cheap part to replace! And I have gotten good at recognizing the symptoms as soon as they start so that I can get a new variator in there before it causes any belt damage. I will figure this out! eventually! Thank you so much for all your help!

+Adib Meerza Thanks. Do you mean the drive boss? I think that would be a bad idea. It would sling the grease outward and be gone in short order, and likely end up on everything in close proximity.

New variator, less than 500 miles this bushing already has excessive clearance/play, it didnt have when first installed, im thinking quality issue, can anyone suggest the best brand to buy that wont wear the bushing out prematurely?
Im running ssp-g exhaust and ncy cdi and direct coil.. got a bando kevlar belt, not sure what possesed me to skimp on tbe variator.. guess i was trying to saveca little $$..but Yeah, im not gonna lie i went with a 20 dollar one, i pull the cover, a week later, about 150 miles give or take on it, i was upgrading to a kevlar belt, was suprised and dissappointed that the bushing already had excessive play in it, also the slides were already spliting, i was stuck with no choice but to continue to run it a few more weeks, but im looking into buying a quality naraku one. On another note I wish there was better cooling options for the cvt, on my qmb139 engine, the little plastic disc fan over the drive face seems useless.. very inferior compared to the aluminum fan on the 150s and other motors, i.m.o
I have been noticing a very distinct sound from my variator section. Its like metal on metal kind, smthg that one gets when the bendix doesnt fully recoil. Although in my case it does. My concern is that the theres too much play between variator bushing and boss. Although its done just 25000km and is stock honda. I have no pick up or speed issues . But this sound is worrisome. What are the symptoms of a worn variator bushing??? . If lets s say the play is less, what affect will it have on performance and why. ?
When my bushing would wear out, it and the boss would be obviously scarred and I could see discoloration and dust on them. The variator would then have trouble moving freely and acceleration would suffer quite a bit. If it wore very slowly, like over 25,000km, then you probably wouldn't have all of that dust and maybe no really obvious signs of wear because it was likely slow and steady. You should be able to tell if the play is excessive just by feel, but if not there are specs in the vid as well as info about measuring.

+Music I'm guessing this is a Minarelli powered youth ATV then? I have a few types of engines in different scoots. If you've got the Malossi OR in that list of parts, it should just be a matter of time spent tuning. Try different sets of clutch springs and see if that gets it into the power quicker. If you can't make much progress there, it may be the roller weights need to be lighter or you could try swapping torque driver angles. Things like ditching the starter clutch and e-start and switching to a light flywheel or inner rotor help it respond more quickly, but if you've already got a pile of nice parts I'd definitely invest some time into fine tuning.

If it's not a sealed bushing area (like my TMAX that has a seal on each side of the variator) then it will likely attract dirt and dust. You can try it and see how it goes for you, but I haven't had it do anything good for me with unsealed variators. If you try it, the idea would be to wipe it down and just leave a film. Anything more than that will sling out and cause belt slip.

90GTVert do you know the name of the 2 stroke OIL you use for your VENTO TRITON R4 49.9cc and where i can purchase the oil.
+Onasis Becerra I like the profile pic! I pre-mix all of my two-strokes and use AMSOil Saber Professional because its' alright at relatively lean mix ratios. There are lots of good oils out there. Just make sure you choose something that is safe for pre-mix or injection, whichever you use. Some oils work for either.
Mine is oil injection could I still use AMSOIL saber professional even though mine is oil inject.
+Onasis Becerra No, I don't think it's a good injector oil. They offer other 2T oils that are injector safe though.
Where did you get the bushings from?

Buy a Honda or Yamaha scooter and just ride it.
