Thanks for the great explanation. I have a Honda SH300 and particularly on cold mornings the bike shudders badly when I pull away from a stop. If I gently feed in the throttle I can work around it and after everything is hot it’s usually ok. Is the problem likely to be the variator or the clutch grabbing or even the torque converter spring? The bike is from 2017 with only 9000 Km. Thanks a lot!

Without knowing what noise I guess you shoud check the diff gears and look for wear in the Transmission, You need to discover the exact location of cause.

Howdy, it is when the engine reaches the 6000km mark you will notice signs of wear so at intervals of 3000kms is a good time to check. Rollers and sliders both slide, Dr P has a great system in their shape and they all designs wear and which ever design you choose maintenance is the key. Dont mix them, it is unnecessary. Rollers: In a perfect world, the effect will be a slightly slower acceleration. If the 13g rollers are possibly already the optimal weight for the variator, if by chance they were too light you would be missing out on some top speed. If it was me I would test and trial several different weight sets to find the best set for what you want from the machine. You are wasting your time. Just so you can learn- give it a go but it will let way too much air in and the bike will not run properly. The Fuel and air ratio needs to be balanced. The Kymco Agility is a snail but you can do engine upgrades to make it a racing snail..🤙🤙🏍

Hi Wow, I hope you were not injured.. Hi, I have a problem with my 50cc 2 stroke scooter, where it takes off great until about 40-45 km/h when it starts to rev really high. Could it be that my drive belt is worn, or the rollers are too light? Also I noticed that the belt doesn't go all the way up on the variator pulley. My top speed is around 60-65 km/h but the scooter is revving really high.
All of the Chinese GY6 are the same, the transmission is different in terms of the case length which is usually determined by the wheel size. Check the engine prefix, 152*** is 125cc 157*** is 150cc.
How would i get my drive belt to go all the way up the variator? I have tried to change the belt but cant seem to use the whole surface which would result in loosing top speed right?
This can be tricky to find the perfect belt as the rear pulley works against the front pulley. A slightly longer belt with smaller width, or shaft with reduced length.

No we dont have. The TGB variator was already at the high performance, they were makers of many Variator for other companies and had a great product already. One of the issues was the spacing shaft had a small instep on the crank side that sat over the crankshaft and this was not a common set up, other variators used a solid shaft with out this step.
Yes, this is pretty common on that engine. The torque driver (rear pulley system) on both the 50cc and 100cc Minarelli engine use a 2 pin system, which is highly prone to wearing prematurely. This causes the rear pulley to suddenly drop open (which rapidly increases the gear and drops the revs) rather than smoothly transitioning into a higher gear as it should. You need to replace the outer face of the rear pulley (torque driver) with the Malossi unit. Its a pretty easy job to do, we have another video on this exact issue and how to repair.
Hey man do u have any information on a gillera storm 50cc 2 stroke if you half throttle it goes to 7k rpm and if u pull the throttle just a little bit moreit just dies. And when I come to a stop it just revs high by its self is that the rollers sticking
The Storm is a cool scooter to tune, rebranded Piaggio Typhoon but with better wheel/tyre combo. What you have described is the perfect description of a bike with an air leak. You need to check your airbox tube (which leads from the airbox to the carb), your intake manifold (from the carb to the engine) as the Piaggio engine in that bike very commonly develops cracks in these rubber parts with age, leading to exactly the problems you've described. If these are both intact, check your reed petals, if intact you may have a crank seal leak.
In the larger capacity scooter there is application for grease. In the smaller scooter I do not use grease. I would suggest to give it a go and see what happens, you will find out immediately the result.
Usually only at transmission service intervals, they will get a little dusty from roller, guide and belt debris caused by wearing. Best just top wipe the out, or clean with brake cleaner. Definitely no grease whatsoever in the Variator, unless you have a MHR Team performance Variator which requires it (these variators have rubber seals at both ends of the bush shaft in the basket to keep the grease captured).
My scooter is having trouble gearing down while driving uphil, im getting really low rpm and it wont gear dowm, the only way to gear down is to stop it then take off again, any ideas what is happening?
Sounds like a classic torque driver failure, or torque spring failure. The Minarelli engine is particularly bad for it, but it can happen to other models too. I would recommend removing your rear pulley and inspecting the spring, as well as removing the sleeve to inspect the pins and slots of the torque driver too.
First number (larger number) is the diameter (outer rounded edge). Followed by the width (flat surface measurement). Example 19mm Diameter X 15mm Wide.
Hey i have a bws 2009 i just put a 70cc malossi cast iron and i wonder what kind of variator and what weight i should put in it if i want good acceleration and 80-90kmh considering i already have 15-50 gears
How fast it the current top speed? I would try for a Malossi variator, with a range of rollers. They must be tuned to the individual bike as well as the rider weight. We sell the variator as well as Polini roller tuning kits on our website
Hello, I have a 2008 Kymco Vitality 50cc 2 stroke. Everything is stock. The stock roller weight is 9 grams. I have an equal mix now of 9gram and 5.5 gram rollers, spaced out equally. I also swapped the stock belt for a malossi Kevlar belt. The scooter can get to 70kms/hr on flat and downhill but stays between 48 and 55 Kms/hr up hills. My issue is if i give the scooter too much throttle from takeoff it bogs. Is this a roller weight issue? I tried 4.7 grams and it seemed to take off better but the rpm’s sounded too high and the top end suffered immensely . I also bought a mix of malossi clutch springs, red, green and blue (I haven’t put them in yet) . I will also be upgrading the muffler soon to a malossi performance exhaust. I’m just confused to why it bogs if i give too much throttle from the start…. I checked my spark plug after riding for a while and it was a chocolate brown so I don’t think it’s running too rich or too lean. I appreciate any advice. It’s a pretty heavy scooter so I’m thinking lighter rollers may not work too well in it.
Go back to the start prior to any mods when there were no issues, now fit 1 part at a time, test the change before moving to the next part change so you can isolate the issue.
Hi! I have keeway ry6 (basically same as yamaha jog) i have problem with speed. My top speed is just 73kmh (45mph). My setup is ported 70cc airsal t6, tecnigas next r, 19mm carb, stage6 variator with 5g rollers, 50% contra spring and stiffer clutch springs. Belt is brand new and carb is working well. How could i increse my top speed?
Have you checked for limiters? Check the CDI and the intake - reed valve. What air box system are you running? Is the belt progressing to the outer limit of the variator? Do a Pen test,. The rollers could moved up to 6 gram or even heavier. A higher end exhaust will help. If all works out consider a gear kit to transfer the power into higher top speed.
hi I have a Typhoon euro 4 from 2020 all original, just there is a Touring pot and some carburetor settings it goes up to 65 / km and there I just received a Malossi MHR variator and I don't know I can put what like pebble, thank you for your answer?
The roller is trial and testing, you need to start some where (the supplied rollers in the kit) and then adjust from there. Only do one change per time and take your time👍👍
@@mohaa04 Do the rollers first and change nothing else. Do the test ride and not the change.... 2nd then you can change the spring and again, do the test ride so the change can be noticed.
Yes, we always place the roller with the closed end or capped end of the roller toward the clockwise direction of the variator. Due to the variator spinning anti clockwise using this method keeps roller inner and outer together. Good quality rollers are glued and it will not be super important but a good practise to apply when setting up the variator.
Never.. The smaller variator should run as a dry unit. Graphite powder has been used in the past but I prefer a clean transmission free from substances. The larger CC variators are an enclosed unit when assembled and they do have a very light grease that remains inside the unit and will not leak to the belt.
The factory weights will probably produce the best top speed. If you go heavier ( which I would advise you try) you may notice a drop in the acceleration from start. Fitting clutch springs will enhance the acceleration and trial of heavier/lighter rollers will allow you to find a best performance result.
You have a huge mismatch there between the cylinder and exhaust. That C16 starts making power where that cylinder kit tops out. If you installed a Yasuni R or Z you'd have a much better power delivery.
@@scooterstreetau It previously had a Technigas that was awful, but it still topped out at 50mph, somethings restricting it, either that or euro4 are just slow
Hey! I have a 110cc honda Aviator 4stroke, I so very much want a different weight roller set than stock. There's nothing available here in India :( Could you please help me out?
We don't have that model in Australia, I'm not sure what size rollers it takes. I would recommend removing one to measure and weigh, there's a very high likelihood it uses a common size which you'll be able to get online.
Is the "inner brass thrust component" that's mentioned at 7:03 replaceable? My variator sleeve/bush has slight side to side play. I don't know if I should buy a new sleeve/bush or replace the "inner brass thrust component" if that's even possible. Thanks for the awesome video!

@@pomaranc3647 You may have several restrictions, the transmission, in the carby and always the factory exhaust. Check all of these areas thoroughly and upgrade the exhaust when you're ready.
A performance Variator generally gives exactly that, better performance. In some models of scooter the Variator can increase the acceleration, increase the delivery of power evenly through the rev rage and in some cases they will increase top speed. Certain Race (Over Range) Variators have larger dimensions then that of the original and add an increase at both ends of the speed line.

@@scooterstreetau the roller weights are covered in rubber or plastic, and the sliders I guess are plastic. a friends scooter shredded the belt, when I replaced it I noticed the roller weights were just metallic (no soft coating left) , maybe that's why it rattles sometimes

When i rode my bike my bike kept slowing down drastically and sound horrible i opened my cvt cover and my cooling fan was shredded to bits do you know what the problem is?
The fan may have damaged such as crack and flew apart. The Crank nut may have come loose? There may be another mechanical part in the CVT that has caused this. Regular maintenance is the best, but not always prevented.
@@scooterstreetau i took everything out put it all back togetyer and it sounds fine but whenever i ride it it will only reach 10-20mph and make a horrible motor like noise then decrease in speed
@@twiggy17 You need to reinstall correctly and replace any damaged parts. Keep working on it and also look further because the fan may be the result of another parts of the engine.
You're a good car mechanic who is learning about scooters👌. No not necessarily, best to try and see what effect it has. Lighter reduce the engine load easier rpm, too light and the top gearing won't be met. Too heavy may impede the acceleration but can give higher top if not meeting the top gear potential.
@@ivlark1 Most likley there is an issue with engine or transmission. You will discover when you start to open up the cover. In a perfect scoot you would lighten the rollers by 10% to start and fit a higher tension set of clucth springs to the clutch shoe.

Hey man - well produced video, but you didn't actually tell us how to service the variator! You only explained how it works and which parts should be replaced (by your workshop). What about directional orientation of the fitting of certain roller weights? What about any cleaning or lubrication (if any) required? The part you refer to as the bush, is technically in engineering terms and OEM parts manuals referred to as a boss or collar; the "bush" is in fact the phosphor bronze bearing surface, press-fitted into the hub of the drive pulley / variator sliding half, or "inner brass thrust component" as you called it. You can release a part 2, educating your viewers more correctly. Twist and go 🙂
Thank you TVW. We love to get the comments and will always reply, very glad you like the production of the Vid, looks like we need to work on the content for you. You may have missed some info, so I'll help out, watch from 1:20 and at 3:00 the components replaced when servicing the variator. In understanding the function of a part you can then better understand how to look after and keep the best function. The direction of rollers placement for each manufacturer is different, If you have a Malossi Variator just follow the instructions in the manual. Overall we have the closed end of the roller if produced in that manner facing opposite the direction of travel. Cleaning is a great idea, always remove the dust and particles that could wear or inhibit the correct function. Many of the workshop manuals have different names for the same part, such as HUB, DRIVE BOSS, COLLAR, BUSH and SPACER. We don't mind what you prefer to call it, we understand what you mean👍You refer to a couple of names for the DRVE PULLEY, VARIATOR SLIDING HALF, DRIVE FACE, VARIATOR BASKET, MOVABLE DRIVE FACE COMP. If you need some help with something in particular just send us an email, will be more than happy to help with your variator😊😊
My atv moped is making this knocking sound while at idle, i opened the variator and looked at the weight rollers, and put them back together exactly as it was, but when i started it up, it started knocking at idle but only at idle, how can i fix this?
You need to retrace your steps. If it wasn't making the noise prior, it stands to reason the cause is something you have done when you have removed the variator. Does it Knock after riding? Did you put the parts back together in the correct manner?

No.

And i have a doppler clutch and also wonder whats the difference between tight and not tight spring
How fast it the current top speed? I would try for a Malossi variator, with a range of rollers. They must be tuned to the individual bike as well as the rider weight. We sell the variator as well as Polini roller tuning kits on our website
@@scooterstreetau ok thank you

Only do one change per time and take your time👍👍
@@scooterstreetau ok I think I'm going to put 6 gram rollers and put the purple spring that provided me with the Malossi kit

@@scooterstreetau ok, i will thank you
hi is there a certain way to install the rollers. i was told the have to be installed a certain way
Yes, we always place the roller with the closed end or capped end of the roller toward the clockwise direction of the variator. Due to the variator spinning anti clockwise using this method keeps roller inner and outer together. Good quality rollers are glued and it will not be super important but a good practise to apply when setting up the variator.
@@scooterstreetau thank you for replying ! This will help
@@ram457moreno 👍👍
Can we put lube or grease on varitaor roller?
Never.. The smaller variator should run as a dry unit. Graphite powder has been used in the past but I prefer a clean transmission free from substances. The larger CC variators are an enclosed unit when assembled and they do have a very light grease that remains inside the unit and will not leak to the belt.
Hi, I have a gillera runnner sp 50 2011 what roller weights should I put in it for good max speeds?
The factory weights will probably produce the best top speed. If you go heavier ( which I would advise you try) you may notice a drop in the acceleration from start. Fitting clutch springs will enhance the acceleration and trial of heavier/lighter rollers will allow you to find a best performance result.

hey what are the benefits of a better variator
A performance Variator generally gives exactly that, better performance. In some models of scooter the Variator can increase the acceleration, increase the delivery of power evenly through the rev rage and in some cases they will increase top speed. Certain Race (Over Range) Variators have larger dimensions then that of the original and add an increase at both ends of the speed line.

I’m a stupid car mechanic.. heavier weights give you quicker acceleration?
You're a good car mechanic who is learning about scooters👌.
No not necessarily, best to try and see what effect it has. Lighter reduce the engine load easier rpm, too light and the top gearing won't be met. Too heavy may impede the acceleration but can give higher top if not meeting the top gear potential.
