- 5 Important Things I've Learned From Rappers. In this video I'm going to be discussing 5 of the most important lessons I've learned throughout my years of listening to hip-hop. Some of these lessons you may have learned yourself, other ones may be brand new to you and will be an eye-opener after you hear me talk about it.

anderson paak's trash ass xxl cypher was the first impression i had of an artist. the first time i heard come down, my opinion went full 180 and i was rooting for him. so glad he got grammy and a no.1 single
"My son's is amazing, he look Korean, but he dance like MJ, he only in Pre-K"
This man was just speaking nonsene and thought we wouldn't notice
@@nanabonsu2349One of the best lines 🖖🏽
Anderson paak’s 2016 xxl cypher had me convinced he was the worst artist of all time. Now I love his music lol
His xxl solo freestyle was amazing. His cypher verse? I took it as “he’s not a RAPPER rapper so he’s just there having fun.”
But his actual music? Oh yeah. It’s amazing
Anderson been that guy
fax
Anderson came straight to my mind when he was talking about XXL. That cypher was so bad that it was hilarious, but I’m glad I checkout his music after it
It's just cause they gave him a trap beat when he doesn't make trap at all. They should've gave him a funky beat and he would've went insane
"every artist has a gold mine waiting to be discovered by you" truth!
I can't believe you not rocking with JID
I personally fuck with JID, I know you dislike Off Deez but that shit is a banger to me. Respect your opinion though
For #4, I had that experience with Kanye West. He’s my second favorite artist of all time and yet I haven’t heard all of his albums. I decided to listen to Graduation and I found some great songs that I had never heard anyone talk about
@@insideroutside Kanye albums hit different ngl, straight up classics
Kanye is one of my favourite artists too. I have only listened to 4 albums tho lol. I like soul samples and the big anthems like stronger. I don't care about that yeezus shit and all that lol
#2 totally agree with you. Always listen to them at your own pace. Never succumb to the peer pressure.
I remember back when I was in high school, when my friend or a video game put me on to an artist, I would always listen to more songs and eventually go down a rabbit hole. Wiz Khalifa, Odd Future, etc. I got into listening to Lil B because of Odd Future.
I learned one thing, either rappers have longevity or not.
Lollllll I didn’t expect you to say “Logic” I’m dying laughing that someone was so adamant about him 💀
I definitely agree with all your takes especially the discography one but unfortunately we live in a time where ppl don’t even listen to albums no more but singles
There is something really beautfiul about #4. It's the only way I've been listenning to music for a long time now. If I hear a hot song I immediately head towards the album it's on and I often find out that it's actually one of the weaker songs of the album. So instead of one hot song, you'll end up with a lot more than that. I remember back in the day I was saying that Snoop didn't make anything good after Doggystyle, but when I finally sat down and listened to all his albums I wanted to slap myself for saying that
9:34 a target back to school commercial hahaha
When Meek dropped Championships, I thought it was his first album ngl because I found out about him in like 2017 from an old Ima Boss song. I was saying he my favorite rapper but I only knew one song. And then i listened to an album of his and was impressed. But I never felt the need to listen to an album until I found out he actually had all those features that I didn't know about. Like he has a song with people like Kendrick Lamar and then have a song with a guy like Kirko Bangz. And going back into his whole discography was the best thing I could do because he really became my favorite artist. Now I like popular songs by him and then Songs that not many people know by him.
Amiri the realest critic 💯
You're really honest. I like that for real.
Crazy how we both got into Em’s discography at the exact same time
Hell nah you trippin with JID
4:28 as a JID fan I agree with this. But he has nice flows so I don't really care most of the time
I realized that JID’s technical ability and the way he flows is both entertaining to listen to, but at the same time a detriment. He does so much that a lot of it you won’t catch just listening, most of the time you have to pull up lyrics and analyze shit to really realize all of what he’s saying and doing.
After hearing the forever story, I can’t say jid is a bad artist or rapper. Sorry
Not the silence for Chica fans 🤣 omg the disses are so subtle
For me I hated dicaprio 2 for the longest but just recently I came back to it and I love just about every song off that tape now
I disagree with your jid take, but I respect your opinion. W video still
I think the first point ties in perfectly with the nostalgia bias some people have over these albums as well. I know so many people who were rocking with in album in middle school or high school and I don't know if they've listened to it since or not. But I do know a lot of times the memories they had with those songs plays a roll in them considering it the "best of the decade" or "best of all time". I can't lie though, that was something I was really bad at for a while myself
Amiri did the perfect example for this Tha Carter III
i think it’s everybody, i mean i didn’t love marshal mathers second LP in its entirety, and even now it’s a lesser feeling but wow are they some strong feelings
This is why I subscribed. You're one of the most honest music RUclipsrs out there bro.
I fully agree on the last part. Someone literally put my IP address on the internet just because I said that I liked Juice Wrld more than Jpegmafia
Man the first point I felt that with Joyner Lucas.
I was a fan of his singels and Mixtapes. But after the first Album and his new EP. Had made me not care for his music anymore. I even try to go back and it was doing nothing for me. Even the tracks I loved years ago nothing.
21:40 Amiri you a fool 😂😂😂
That's crazy. I was just wondering when will Amiri post another video, and then boom!
Appreciate the content bro.
Its kinda funny (not in a bad way) that off deez is kinda the song that turned you off JID when thats the song that got me (and a lot of other ppl if we being honest) and then i went back and listen to Never Story which turned out to be better than Dicaprio 2
That boy amiri 🔥 but u gotta chill on JID😂💪🏽
My day gets better when you upload… no joke bro you really be bringing me such entertainment I hope you have the energy to do this for as long as you can ‼️ be safe and keep rocking Amiri
When you said JID my heart skipped a beat and i got jump-scared
I feel you on #2 and #5. Had so many people try to come at me because I can’t get into Kendrick. Listened to 5 songs from Good Kid Maad City and just shut it off as I couldn’t listen to him anymore
Honestly, that's happened to me with Kanye West. I just can't get into his music; All Falls Down, Power, Mercy, and I couldn't get into Donda. Same thing with Chief Keef. It seems everyone has this amazing viewpoint about him, but I just don't get the hype, and I'm still confused on Gulley Boy's praise for him. If you all like these rappers, more power to you, but they are not for me.
Edit: Now I think about it, I think even I had this problem with J. Cole. There's a few songs I kind of like; Middle Child and Power Trip are some of a few in his catalog I like, but the rest and seeing RUclipsrs go crazy after every bar, I just can't really feel or listen to him much anymore.
@@yusifudo46 are those the only ye songs you listened to?
This is true on everything else in life. I can't tell you how many times I tried to like something or someone because others said they liked it or them. Your taste are your taste. Now, I'll let ppl know I don't like it or them then, now, or in the future.
Man, I gotta say 4 & 5 are the most important I’ve taken from this video. When someone says “I love [insert artist], they’re one of my favorites” and can’t name an album or more than 5 songs, I find it pretty funny. Maybe it’s just a lil bias cause I’ve always loved music, but ngl I think it’s pretty wild it’s taken you 18 years to realize that Eminem & other artists have full albums and an entire catalog of music outside of their mainstream radio/commercial hits 😂I started researching when I was 12.
As for 5, this is something I’ve learned from social media. Whenever I mention the fact that I’m not a fan of X, Ski Mask, Juice WRLD, Lil Peep, Jack Harlow, Polo G, or Tory Lanez among others or say that To Pimp A Butterfly has a few skippable tracks, these artists stanbase be on my ass and I would restrain myself from discussing music in general after. As I keep noticing that behavior more and more, I just realize how childish they’re acting and stop caring 🤷🏾♂️
I remember thinking Lil Keed's freestyle being incredibly bad and then a couple of months later I had Long Live Mexico on constant replay. XXL freestyles really don't mean shit
"He is just not my cup of lean anymore" lmao
I had a homeboy who put me on to J. Cole and now he’s one of my favorite rappers. Top 3, matter of fact. But now, buddy doesn’t like him at all and we get into debates every time I mention him as one of my faves.
Damn, when you said Dicaprio 2 I was like fine, but then you named the best track on the album 😪 off deez a banger
Jid my favorite rapper but ngl DiCaprio 2 was weak asf
60 percent of jid songs he don’t be talking about nothing but i like his music though
6:36 Man u scared me, thought you were leading up to say Kendrick 💀
9:30 "fAcE yOuR fEaRs" 😭😭
I have slowed down listening to Dave East. His songs from 2015-2017 were bangers but now he is hit or miss for me.
I agree that every song he does with Singers he gets outshined another song where he gets outshined is Day Dreaming ft. Floyd Miles. His Survival Album was good but I took a break from music in 2020 and now I don't care to listen to his new project.
#4 - i can relate. for this example, i would use bone thugs n harmony. I would hear their well known songs and be like yeah i fw their shit heavy during high school. It wasnt until after i graduated hs in 2011 and in my freshman year of college i finally decided to jump deep into their music. When i tell you i was so amazed about how many bangers they had, and most of them was better than their biggest hits.
9:36 damn u had smooth vocals right there dawg 🤣🤣
ngl I used to be huge on logic and I still like most of his music but I’ve fallen off on his music heavy like the JID example you used. The ones Isaiah recommend are the ones that are actually decent listen all the way through. All of the other albums that are ight i nitpick through the songs (mixtapes) and he has like a cool 3 or 4 ass albums that I never recommend anybody put on. He’s one of those people that is like an entry rap fan’s dream. Easy to listen to and understand. Nothing crazy, but most of it isn’t horrible either. Most people who are deeper in like introspective rap before you hear his shit will just not fw his stuff because it fails in comparison to his peers most of the time.
Great video, all the points were great especially #4.
I don't mind when people say they don't like certain artists, I hate it when people say that somebody is trash just because they don't enjoy the rappers music. For example, people saying Kanye or Eminem is trash because they don't like his style. It may sound like I want them to agree with me, but what I don't want to hear is that this artist is trash when they are so talented. To sum it up, don't talk trash when you're going off just your opinion and nothing else. Except 6ix9ne.
That doesn’t make any sense
You talk with Isaiah tha playa? Damn he left RUclips a while ago. I miss him a lot
ohh… i thought it was gonna be like life lessons 😭
The people that try to talk down on you for who you listen to are so weird to me… why does what I listen to affect you so much?? Makes no sense 😭
Yea, it’s impossible to listen all of your favorite artist’s music. Like I love Nas, but I have never listened to the full Illmatic album. Will I soon? Yes. But I was under 10 when that came out, so it’s impossible that this would have been on my radar.
Same. I would say Nas is definitely one of my top 5 rappers and even I haven’t heard all of illmatic. I know most of the songs like N.Y state of mind, and Life’s a Bitch but I’m not familiar with all of them. Shit I haven’t really fully listened to his recent 3 albums he dropped. Definitely gonna tried to at some point
Bro I used to do the second thing for so long. Like if an artist made an album I wanted to listen to, I'd first force myself through every other project they have until I'd get to the album I wanted to hear. Back when Lil Uzi dropped Eternal Atake I first started listening everything else. I'm kinda glad that I did that though since now I know this mans music not for me. Thank god I got out of this habit though
Speaking on Eminem, I know in one of your videos you mentioned you hate when people tell you to do certain videos but I wanna ask, WOULD you make a video ranking his songs? Considering this man has plenty songs to choose from.
The way you said that 1 logic song sounded like a back to school target soundtrack LOL💀😂😂
Fridays at 4 pm yessir
#2 is something I had to learn the hard way because it lead to #1 painfully often.
I have since learned to develop and honor my own music discovery process. every now and again I feel adventurous and listen to songs I didn't care to try before. sometimes I find a gem, sometimes I find a lump of coal but its all good because that's my personal process and its a sustainable one for me.
9:36 didn’t have to cook him like that 😂😂😂
Shit had me on the floor dyin 😂😭 he was spot on
Don’t let anyone convince Logic is good. Please Amiri
I truly do think if you don’t like Dave East anymore you were never really a fan of the music, you were a fan of the Wave. His shit still hitting better then ever before, he’s never dropped a bad project
Listening to Eminem's catalog for the first time is a mind-blowing experience 🤯
I 100% feel that part about diving through artist's discographies, largely because I didn't really listen to albums in general until I started reviewing them. That's why before I started reviewing music on RUclips (which is obviously more time-consuming than the blog I was writing), I would do "marathon reviews" on my blog where I'd take certain artists and review at least their album discographies, especially if it was leading up to a new project. Drake, Travis Scott, Rae Sremmurd...hell, even non-hip-hop artists I like like The Weeknd, Ariana Grande, Bruno Mars, etc.
It was a good way to get me up to speed on these artists, and a way to make me realize that they have A LOT more music than I'd come anywhere close to imagining previously (also part of the reason I had wanted to make TEN YEARS LATER a series in the first place: gave me a chance to go back and listen to a lot of music I had missed out on).
To splinter off #2, something that Logic taught me is if someone doesn’t enjoy what you consider someone’s best, they’re probably not going to like anything else that person released. Like if someone doesn’t like Logic’s early tapes, don’t tell them to listen to his albums
Also y’all should really listen to #5 life gets so much better when you do
And sometimes it's a good idea to give an artist a good listen. I've come across tracks I did like by an artist I didn't think I liked.
Great videos! Appreciate the opinions even if I agree or disagree 🔥🔥
carti is a great example for the third point (for me personally)
Skegee by J.I.D is cool also
Amiri turned off Gang Related. That's kwazy cuz ion even listen to him like that but that was one of the 5 songs that ever made my playlist by him
21:44 you ain’t had to violate like that 😂
Saw my boy on the thumbnail had to click
On point #5 Oh hell yes I had that exact thing happen with DAMN. I remember that dropped my junior year and me and a couple dudes were discussing it in class a few days later. I was the only one in the group who didn't really rock with it. The only songs I'd say I liked at the time were Fear and Duckworth. Those guys thought I was crazy for saying I thought it was maybe a 5/10 album. After that I was pretty much done discussing hip hop in class. I never even said it was a bad album, just that I thought it wasn't as good as the hype it was getting.
5/10 is bad
5/10 is Average. School trained y'all to only think of 7/10 as an average grade
@@lordjayuniverse I was homeschooled actually, but I don't need school to know you're an idiot. Half of a whole is still not a good position.
@@lordjayuniverse nah 5/10 is mid 7/10 is average
#4 and #5 are great points that every casual or non-casual music fan should be accustomed to
To be honest I like kamaiyah I think she’s fire
I learned #4 through a page I found called DIGGING THE GREATS...BASICALLY THE BASS PLAYER BREAKS DOWN TRACKS,TELLS U CHORDS, INFLUENCES & EVEN GIVES U SAMPLES (TITLES & ARTISTS ).
I've heard about that channel a long time ago but never watched it because I'm not someone that cares about the breakdown of samples and instruments for real.
hey amiri so ik you think rod wave isnt that versatile but is album hunger games 2 is hella good in my opinion & most songs are different. the album is only 28 minutes so id loved for you to give is a try
I LOVE Space Bound by Eminem
Ngl that logic underpressure take is wild
All love tho
I mean I like pop music rap sometimes bore me I like music that's motivation
JID actually went off on that HOME remix wit mike dimes
Logic is one of those examples of, just because you can, doesn't mean you should.
That's how I feel about a lot of people that make it to XXL. I like their freestyle and cyphers but when it comes to their music, I either don't care or think they're trash overall.
Seem like I JUST saw this nigga
🔥🔥🔥
Bruh I'm eating a fucking burger and all of a sudden 9:27 came on...I stopped mid chew and laughed cuz wtf was that shit 😹...
I’m a huge Logic fan but I 100% agree with your point of view all the way 😩😭😭😭😂😂
The Incredible True Story
1. I AM THE GREATEST
2. LIKE WHOA
3. NEVER BEEN
I'M AMAZED U DIDN'T LIKE PARADISE
MY 1ST LOGIC SONG WAS WE GET HIGH BTW
SAMPLE FLAME & FLOW WAS NICE
I personally can't vibe with Coi Leray but it's fine if you like her.
“ I’m walking on sunshine waohh “😂
I bust out laughing when he said that lmao
Number 2 is pretty significant. I've listened to plenty of full discographies, but those were because I was somewhat interested in either listening to their older stuff that i haven't checked out or wanted to listen to more stuff from them.
However, I don't completely agree with not succumbing to the peer pressure. Music is supposed to be enjoyable at the end of the day, and you should definitely not force yourself to go through a gruelling album or mixtape. However, if someone recommends something to you, worst comes to worst you don't like it and you move on. I recently checked out Summertime 06 as per a recommendation by someone I know who really likes Vince Staples. I thought it was okay, but then i listened to Big Fish Theory and liked that a lot. Having then listened to FM and self titled, his new album that just came out is a lot more enjoyable than I think it would have been otherwise because I know how it relates to the rest of his discography. If i really hated the first album or two, i would have probably not listened to anything else unless i was told that they were completely different stylistically.
Another reason why I slightly disagree with not listening to something you know you won't like is for revisiting purposes. I am a huge eminem fan, but I feel like I'm in the vast minority when I say I never really got the hype around Relapse. I've listened to it all the way through probably 25+ times throughout the past 10-11 years and it was always just okay. As of recently, it finally kinda clicked with me and I have it just short of an 8/10 from previously a low 6/10. Sometimes you get the urge to listen back to something you didn't love before just to see if there's something you never understood or that hasn't clicked with you yet, but in more extreme cases when it's something you really hate, i can understand not ever going back.
EDIT: watching further into the video and this topic comes again on number 4. This is pretty much the reason I went through each of the artists I'm interested in's discographies. Knowing one album from someone is like watching one scene of a movie or reading one chapter of a book. I love going chronologically from an artist's earlier stuff and seeing their evolution and how they change as a person which is showcased musically in most cases. It makes the connection between you and the artist a lot more personal and you understand new dimensions of the music that you may have thought was one-dimensional beforehand. A seemingly meaningless, happy souding pop song like Blinding Lights makes a ton of sense working within the dark and melancholic album After Hours. I had a friend listen to that as of recently and by the way he was explaining how he felt to me, it sounds like his mind was blown when he realized what the song really meant
doing great keeping all of dicaprio 2, also this JID point better have changed for some of y’all after the forever story
I kinda feel this. I like lyrical hip-hop exclusively. People like Ransom, J.Arr, Phonte, Earl Sweatshirt, Em, Royce da 5'9", Busta Rhymes... People say it's boring but Idgaf
YOOO Space Bound used to be my shit 🤣
#2 was pure comedy 🤣
Yo listen to the forever story by jid might be album of the year
😂😂😂😂😂😂!!! @Off Deez imitation…. DiCaprio 2 Review was on point for real for real.. and I am a JID fan.
great video fam!!! i respect your opinions. everybody has different tastes in music. Like what you like lol
Those logic mixtapes are classics
yea i wouldnt listen to more than 2 albums if i didnt enjoy it, but i dont start at the beginning of an artists discography usually either most popular or most well recieved. if i care to go further than that i will but early mixtapes are only interesting to me if i really like the artist
