I brush my GSD teeth but bought a scraper to use. This video is just what I needed and short enough to get right to the point. Thank you for posting.

Every video is like here is my easy peasy dog and watch how I scrape his teeth. Can someone do a video with a dog that just isn't having it? Cuz that's my dog.

MissTotos start really small. Whenever I have a rescue I need to train and clean up I start at breakfast with putting the dog on an elevated surface (like a table or a grooming table) and just putting my fingers in their mouth and getting them comfortable. And I feed them over and over during the whole thing so they have a nice association.
The next meal do the same thing while touching the teeth with the tarter scraper. Just tap the teeth. Sort of gently rub the teeth. Get them to let you hold their lips open for a longer period of time. Feed and feed so they think “I guess this isn’t all bad”
Next meal you’re going to try to scrape one tooth. Just take about a billion breaks and feed the dog. Scrape a tiny bit and stop. Feed. Go back. Try not to let the dog pull away too much by taking a break before the dog gets annoyed enough to pull away.
Make it a goal to get one single tooth done at each meal.
When all the teeth are beautiful and clean then do this once a week, I like to do it on Friday so they have lovely breath for weekend snuggles. Every week I scan along the gum line and remove any tarter that begins to build up. It doesn’t take much time and by this point the dog is totally comfortable with the whole thing. They don’t ever love it. But they do learn to be so patient and sweet about it.
I have done this with literally dozens of rescue dogs! All shapes and sizes and temperaments! It really works. And it sounds like it takes forever but it doesn’t. You are just gradual. Put in the two weeks, ten minutes at each mealtime, see it as an investment.
For every tooth you clean you are saving your dog time under anesthesia to clean their teeth and you’re saving yourself a boat load of cash in keeping the doggo healthy.
So 20 mins total. Ten mins each meal. I hope you give it a go!

what i did is i started small, like I scrape for a minute, than give a treat. Do that multiple days in a row, and then your dog will get used to it

Woody and Chloe are so adorable. I'm learning to descale my dogs teeth. I clean her teeth each day. This vid really helps thank you. Also it's good to do this yourself as putting your dogs under GA is bad for their heart. All dog owners should really clean their dogs teeth at least once a day. And descale of possible.

Awesome video and your dog’s teeth are absolutely beautiful! I do brush my dog’s teeth but unfortunately that is not enough and I’d prefer not to undergo anesthesia. So, will give it a serious go with your method! Thank you so very much!!

Thank you so much for that! Teeth cleaning is so important for our furry friends😸
My cat is actually more receptive to dental hygiene than my dog. Perhaps because she’s a little older so we’ve been practicing a bit longer. Or maybe because my dog is a yorkie and has lots of hyper wiggly energy but she now knows when it’s time to clean teeth and tolerates it better than she use to.

Her dog’s teeth are so lovely and white. Our dog’s teeth needs attention sadly so I’m looking into de scaling. We brush our dog’s teeth 3 times per week but it doesn’t seem to be enough as tartar calcifies I believe.

Just found this channel as I would like to clean my dog’s teeth at home. I’m nervous about him being under anesthesia at the vet. Not to mention it’s $400. Did your dog have any sedative to calm him?

I was quoted the dental cleaning will be $1200+ but I’m more concerned about the anesthesia because my dog is 12

Any pointers on how to get the dog comfortable enough to let me use a scaler? I tried using it on my dog with more buildup and he kept wiggling away.

    • @cc92873
      @cc92873 5 лет назад +6

deltadivajp You do it in phases. The key is just getting them comfortable with you working in their mouth. So the first try may only last a minute and make sure not to hurt them especially the first few times as that may strengthen their fear and set trust back even further. Reward them with lots of praise, kisses and atta boys/girls. Then the next day try to go a bit longer and just keep at it once a day or every couple days and eventually it becomes part of the grooming routine just like nail trimming/filing, hair brushing, bathing and ear cleaning. They will not like it at first and will wiggle to get away but with steady persistence and praise, they will eventually allow it to happen, knowing you aren’t trying or going to hurt them. One day you will realize “wow we got all the way through this time”. Remember your energy is a major factor that determines how long or short this desensitization process will be. So calm, assuring, loving yet assertive energy not frustrated, whinny or angry. Just be patient as some dogs take much longer than others but the rewards are so great, you want to keep at it because bad teeth in cats and dogs can lead to so many bigger issues. I hope this helps a little.

Ricardo Jorge filho dog wasn’t properly trained or has aggression issues. Because if your own dog bites you that says a lot about how they don’t respect or trust you.

Anyone watching this please don't do this at home. Firstly incorrect instrument and seriously wrong technique. You are likely to lacerate the gums or cause an abscess. The only thing that will come from this technique is to damage the enamel on the tooth. The reason I take my dog to the vet for a cleaning is because they need to be anesthetized so they can get under the gum line (where most disease occurs). Best thing you can do for oral health care for dogs is to brush their teeth with toothpaste formulated for dogs.
