When you google "how do dogs show affection" the first thing that comes up is "licking, tail wagging..." I think after 30K yrs, we humans know affection when we see it.
We been around since 190,000 bc. Wolves been our allies for quite some time. Even when they became dogs. Difference between wolf and god is wolf is an ally while a dog is a best friend.
First about 'eating grass' moment. When predator catches a pray, which is fed by eating grass, he eats stomach first. Their stomachs are able to transform food ( grass and greenery) into very rare vitamins, which all animals needed. When meat - eater as a dog, has no possibility to catch a pray and get these vitamins, they eating grass themselves instead. As far as I now some cancer treatment methods in Mexican clinics are based on this finding. So,it is nothing to do with anxiety. Our dogs licking us when they are feeling grateful ( after getting food or drink) or wants some cuddles, expressing some feelings to us,etc.. They're not looking for a food from anyones mouths ( other way around ,bringing to us something very dear to them, special toy or tasty food). Also I can feel their very special feelings to us sometimes. I would call it love. You can call whatever you want. Today is 3 years as my late springador Trixie passed away. She was battling cancer and moment she died I felt how something breaks apart from my soul ( or essence, whatever you call it ). It was physical feeling and I knew that moment she's gone. We had very strong bond in between us, she was my velcro dog,my companion. So,to believe in such things as food from mouth or grass for anxiety, you need to understand nothing about this beautiful gift from God.
Licking can be a form of contact for a dog or cat like someone touching you. When I scratch my dog on his chest, he gets this content, relaxed look and starts licking my hand. It's like he is petting me back.
That's a beautiful way to look at it! Licking can indeed be a form of affectionate contact, similar to how we touch or pet our pets. Your dog’s response to your affection shows the special bond you share. It's heartwarming to see how our furry friends express their love in their unique ways. Thanks for sharing this lovely perspective!
I literally tell my Corgi, “Wheres mom? Go upstairs and give momma a kiss” and he immediately gets happy, runs up the stairs, and gives his momma a kiss.
I had six dogs in my life and have now dog number seven and everytime i talk sweet talks to her she liks my face and so did the others .I think is a sign of love from them to you.
My dog does lick my legs when I come back from a workout and I have been sweating, but she also licks me when I'm not sweating or eating anything. If I get right in her face she is going to lick me regardless.
I know, right? To me, it's very clear that it's an expression of love. A dog wags his tail usually, too, when he licks your face and tail wagging is a sign of happiness. My dog does it especially when I tell him "I love you."
@@egrogan6482exactly. Especially when they lick your face and eye lids as you close your eyes. If they wanted to, they could fk you up and blind you. But they love you.
My dog eats grass when he's running around happy as a clam in the bush. He is sniffing grass and other plants for traces of other animals, often licks it to get even more information and sometimes gets carried away and eats it. He has also gone outside and eaten grass, usually when he has eaten something he wasn't supposed to, and thrown up later. Some dogs may eat grass because they're anxious but it's certainly not all dogs.
I think the key here is a dog lick and like other things such as eating grass can have multiple reasons. From owning dogs over 40 years I can fairly say yes a dog will lick you if your sweaty as they don't produce salt like we do and it tastes really good to them. At the same time if they are hungry they can smell food you have eaten and will lick at your hands and mouth or even cloths if your messy. However there are times where with little to no sweat or food I have dogs that will give a slight lick barely touching you. Something like that would appear to be emotional and endearing
My dogs ALWAYS kiss me and love when I kiss them, and when these things happen, there is never sweat, food, etc involved. They definitely kiss each other too, on the mouth but just briefly. They do that in the morning when they see each other, and also after too much roughhousing.
My dog (a labrador) tends to lick my knee which is constantly scabbed to do an injury. One time she started licking the other (good knee), stopped, stepped back, and turned to the wound. I've seen her lick other people where they have been hurt. Licking is not always associated with food, or salt.
I'm quite sure the licking is a message of "I'm no threat to you, please don't hurt me, I don't want any trouble right now." but its easy for humans to put it in their own terms and just say its kisses or affection which is fine too, and natural. But at it's core it's like how a horse foal will gape it's mouth at another adult "please don't hurt me, I'm just a baby."
In the summer when I cut grass. I come back in the house sweaty. I usually lay down in the floor to rest. My dog immediately comes over and starts to lick me. I am sure it’s because of the salt in my sweat. But no one will ever tell me it’s just that. My dog is making sure I am alright and showing me love. I love my dog. She is always showing my family love. ❤❤❤❤
My dogs go nuts when I get home .....and then HAVE to mug me with hugs, licks and furiously wagging tails.....almost like I had been away for years on an Odyssey like Homer (which is most often just a small 1hr trip to deliver a job to a client).
My dog is on a home cooked diet. After he finishes a meal, he wants to come jump on my lap - where he then gives me a quick lick and then buries his face in my neck. I take it as a thank you for the nice meal.
It’s always the same. A catchy headline (“What it really means, when…”) is followed up by an “explanation” that inevitably contains the “M” word: “… might….”
When I tell my dog kiss, he doesn’t lick me. He presses his lips up against my cheek, mimicking me, in the same spot that I give him kisses on his face.
licking is because they want food or salt? Name the times you see your dog lick you; is it obvious hunger or affections? These "authorities" on dogs need to do more research. Seems like they just made good click bait instead of facts.
It's true that there are many reasons dogs might lick their owners, and it's not always easy to pinpoint just one. Dogs can lick for affection, to show submission, to get attention, or even because they like the taste of our skin. It might also be a way for them to communicate their needs, like hunger. Paying attention to the context when your dog licks you can give you more clues. Is it close to their mealtime, or are they trying to get your attention for a cuddle? Each dog is unique, and their behavior can vary. You're right that more research can help us understand our furry friends better, but sometimes, it's also about knowing your own dog's personality and habits. In any case, it's important to look at the whole picture and understand the context rather than relying on one explanation. Your insights are valuable and remind us to always question and learn more about our beloved pets. 🐾😊
Licking is a sign of affection between dogs and humans. My dog would lick my face before sleep. Lick me 10 times then walk away and plop on the bed to sleep. One dog went to my other dog with ear and other dog would lick it inside and out. Thats love right there. Not wanting to share food or lick sweat. But im sure that is a bonus.
2:48 Duhhhhhh. . . But this video about licking not being a sign of affection is one that I would looooooooove to see their Sources on. . . An aggressive dog don’t give kisses, a loving dog does. . .
In the spring, my dog Roxie goes crazy for the wild grass behind our house. I talked to her vet, and the vet said sometimes grass just tastes good. Roxie is 11 and still does it
This is a very shallow video. Eating grass is likely improving gut health. It is much more likely that dogs have interest in grass (natural fiber) since it supports thier microbiome and gut health, as it does with many other species, including humans.
I think that a dog is trying to communicate when it licks you. It could be affection sometimes, but I think Bruno likes the taste of my moisturizer or something. I think it’s also a form of greeting as well.
I think dogs lick because of affection. Watch the dog when you come home after a separation and he is excited to see you. First thing it does is jump on you and cover your face with licks.
What you said about dog licking may be true in part, but if you lavish your beloved dog with kisses they almost always respond with a quick loving lick. Now prolonged licking when your hot and sweaty may be what you were referring to.
If you want me to believe that my dog licks me because of anything but affection and trust...you probably want me to believe in Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy and Bigfoot as well.
I watched this with my canine friend Luella. She says when she licks me, it's because she likes me. And she went on to say she eats a little grass now and then, because she likes it.
I always kiss my dog on the nose. When I have eaten something he tries to lick my lips to get a taste. When he shows me affection he licks my nose. I think it’s a learned behavior they use to try to communicate with us.
Dogs lick for multiple reasons. They may smell something that interests them on your body like food on your mouth, lotion, or another animals scent that you just rubbed. But dogs also show affection and expressions through their mouths. For instance if they’re hot they’ll pant because that’s how they cool down, or if they want your attention they’ll grab your hand with their mouth or play bite to tell you they want to play. Dogs use their mouths for many purposes, including licking because their tastebuds are super enhanced and they taste 10 times greater than humans, plus your scent and taste is a way to them remembering you.
- Dogs aren't colored blind. - They & cats eat grass for their stomachs as it helps them to throw up air balls along with impurities. 'It's natural' - Animals lick & groom you to express affections & they also like/need the salts into their diets. If you taste good : ]
We have a Japanese Akita family member. Whenever we tell him;” I love you handsome boy…. He runs over wraps his arms around the neck and licks our faces. Always been that way
The only time my dogs licks me is when I station him to sit with his paws on my lap and ask him if he’s a good boy and he gives me one touch to my nose. It’s just a trained behavior to affirm our bond.
I grew up with dogs in our houses. And now I got 5 in mine. Whenever I kiss them on their heads, immediate reaction is to lick my face. That's not for salt.
Your body is 80% bacteria and retroviruses (germs), which you have no control over. The exterior of your body is covered with bacteria, even if you've never been near a dog. Most of that bacteria saves your life. Go ahead. Kiss a dog. ; )
We just got a new puppy and she licks everyone at every chance she gets. She's doing it to show affection, not because she's hoping we'll feed her or are sweaty lol.
I have two puppies named Stella and Remi. Every day, I take them on a walk. One of my puppies Remi starts eating grass and acorns for some reason. Remi did vomit twice on different days. I don’t know what’s going on with. I don’t drive a car yet. I don’t know what to do to help my puppy Remi to stop eating grass or acorns
Dog licking is still cute. I've almost always had a dog at home growing up and she didn't only lick me when I had recently eaten or was sweaty. Dogs learn a lot from human and if you respond to licks positively, they will understand that you like it and will adjust their behavior.
dogs can live up to 20 years top. if one dog year was equal to seven human years, that would mean that humans can live up to 140 years. Last time i checked the oldest person alive was 109 years old and barely surviving. So the whole human to dog conversion rate is false AF
The lickings part isn't true because some dogs do lick, cuddle, or rub to show affection. When my dog wants me to pet him he will look at me and cry, and start petting me. If I stop, he pets me again to get my attention. And when I'm petting him, he licks my hand. Maybe he's grooming me? Maybe I taste good? But either way it's not just because he wants food or likes my taste.
What a load of BS. I’ve always gave my dog tons of affection (probably too much tbh 😂) and now she is super affectionate. She will literally pin your arm down and grab it with her “hands” and lick you till it hurts if you don’t stop her 😅 She gets a lot of exercise and mental stimulation so I know it’s not boredom or whatever, she’s just licky
So what if ur dog licks u when ur not sweaty and don’t have food in ur mouth? Also, when taking your dog out, they’re always smelling.things picking up on all these scents, isn’t that mentally stimulating for them?
The reason a dog licks varies. And in my case it has NOTHING to do with hopes of food 😂 The day I got her (as a puppy), I spit in her mouth. When she was being trained and she did things I did not want her to do...I would spit in her mouth and I say a stern "No" . Her reaction has always been the same. She stops what she is doing, licks my face and immediately lays down on her belly. A sign of submission. Dogs still are, instinctively, pack animals. Their human family is their pack. Watch videos of wolves. The lower dogs will often lick their pack leaders mouths and lay down on their stomachs. Spitting in their mouths seems to make them more loyal in my opinion.
Back when I had a dog and would take him to the beach, as soon as I came out of the ocean water he would immediately start licking my legs for the salt. While wagging his tail.
Narrated by someone who doesn't know dogs. Yes, the instinct to lick faces comes from the habit of wolves to do this and cause the hunting wolves to regurgitate their kills to share with the pack, but in dogs this has evolved into something else. Anyone who has had many dogs knows that a dog may lick because you are sad, or not feeling well, or the dog is happy. That is because dogs are so tuned into human emotions, we can used them as trained aids to alert humans, that the human is about to faint. So dogs, learn what we like, and they try and give us what we like, and if a person likes dog kisses, the dog will give dog kisses to make the human feel better.
Some dogs can smell cancer. There was a case of a white woman in New Zealand whose dog kept licking her ankle, particularly on and around a small mole there. She became really annoyed by his behaviour and brought him over to veterinarian for a neurological examination. The vet assured her that HE was fine, but told HER to see a dermatologist to have her ankle skin checked straight away. Turns out she was in the early stages of malignant melanoma, they nipped it in the bud, and her dog (and that vet) saved her life!

All living beings have inherent value, regardless of their utility to humans, all forms of life have an intrinsic right to exist and flourish.
I think my cousins Rottweiler is just seeing what people taste like before he makes his mind up 😆
😂❤
LOL YIKES!!
Mine gives me a smooch every night because my husband does. He started this as a puppy watching us. Also nobody is allowed to hug me. He runs up and thinks he's the only one that can hug me jumps up wraps his front legs around me and snuggles his wet nose on me. I say okay I love you too Joe, then he gets down all happy. He's an amazing dog.

If someone tells you they know what a dog is thinking, dont walk away, run, they are full of crap.
Agreed. This video is pretty much click bait.
Don't die as a disbeliever
@@marcberrenson570 dog not allowed ect
@@LisaJones-xk6xz Dude, don't you have anything constructive to say? What are you a bot, or a five year old?
Yes sometimes you know what a dog is thinking. Just by their actions looks…
Like when it needs to go out, needs fed, watered.
All dogs are unconditional lovers .period
Another expert video. There might be different types of licks. But they definitely shoving trust and love and happiness most of the time.
WRONG! Then why does my dog wake me up with kisses to my face when I have absolutely no food in my mouth?
You smell good!
licking you BAD breath!!!
Yea, my Cockapoo wakes me up with kisses.
@@Phyllida-r7n But you taste even better. LOL
EXACTLY RIGHT!
It is the sign of excitement and showing their love that is all
Licking is a sign of love. My dogs often lick me if I give them treat or rub their belly.
What did you do? Ask them? I get so tired of these so called "experts" telling us why pets do certain things!
Absolutely. People should understand their own perceptions and not expect a dog to understand them too!
"Experts" are a dime a dozen. 🙄
Lorne Greene told us that a dog that was 15 years old was like 105 for you and me! And I believe him, because he was Ben Cartwright!
Here is a pearl of wisdom..... Don't waste your time watching this channel
Yeah, the licking is a dog kiss, call it what you want but it’s a sign of affection clearly!
Then why does my dog lick my face like crazy when he hasn't seen me all day! Regardless of what's on my face
True about the licking fixation that dogs have.
The fact people let a dog lick their face after licking its butt
blows me away! Disgusting!🤢
Kiss from your dog is an act of love and affection. Nothing else
Zero facts in this video. Maybe you should go pet your cat.
Garbage
What, the comment or tge video?
Good one 😂
😂
Never trust "the experts". A dogs lick can most definitely be a sign of affection.
Its not cute what i do to my wife either, but it implies affection.
My dogs go nuts when I get home .....and then HAVE to mug me with hugs, licks and furiously wagging tails.....almost like I had been away for years on an Odyssey like Homer (which is most often just a small 1hr trip to deliver a job to a client).
my dog kisses me after i feed him because he grateful
Whatever.
Yea my dog does that too, he says thank you.
My dog leaves a tip. 20% if he feels the service was very good.
It is a sign of affection, none the less.
My dog is on a home cooked diet. After he finishes a meal, he wants to come jump on my lap - where he then gives me a quick lick and then buries his face in my neck. I take it as a thank you for the nice meal.
Actually my wolf/malamute lived 17 years and stayed healthy all the way.
Dogs may be absorbing your scent and taste, but they know damn well YOU see it as affection and do so accordingly.
I do believe dogs do this for affection on their end as well, but I like the way you put this 😊
It’s always the same. A catchy headline (“What it really means, when…”) is followed up by an “explanation” that inevitably contains the “M” word:
“… might….”
how do you know. did you ask the dog.
When I tell my dog kiss, he doesn’t lick me. He presses his lips up against my cheek, mimicking me, in the same spot that I give him kisses on his face.
My dog licks me right after he licks his Arse , he’s just trying to get the taste off of his tongue
😂
I had a dog that would not kiss anyone except me and she love me to the last moment of her life.
licking is because they want food or salt?
2:48 Duhhhhhh. . . But this video about licking not being a sign of affection is one that I would looooooooove to see their Sources on. . . An aggressive dog don’t give kisses, a loving dog does. . .
I always told my kids that when a dog licks you they are seeing if you taste good just in case they want to eat you later if you don't feed them.
And how do you know do you have a dog brain and can you read their minds?
In the spring, my dog Roxie goes crazy for the wild grass behind our house. I talked to her vet, and the vet said sometimes grass just tastes good. Roxie is 11 and still does it
This is a very shallow video. Eating grass is likely improving gut health. It is much more likely that dogs have interest in grass (natural fiber) since it supports thier microbiome and gut health, as it does with many other species, including humans.
This is a load of shit
Yep.
I think that a dog is trying to communicate when it licks you. It could be affection sometimes, but I think Bruno likes the taste of my moisturizer or something.
I think it’s also a form of greeting as well.
I heard that a dog licks you because it's the canine equivalent of petting you. Since it can't pet you, licking is the the closest it can get
Licking is also a form of submission if it's below the nose, if dogs lick above the nose or on the forehead it's a dominant move
Dogs eat grass to get rid of worms
A year is a year, dogs do not have calendars nor do they understand them
Dogs licking is a sign of affection
I watched this with my canine friend Luella. She says when she licks me, it's because she likes me.
And she went on to say she eats a little grass now and then, because she likes it.
I always kiss my dog on the nose. When I have eaten something he tries to lick my lips to get a taste. When he shows me affection he licks my nose. I think it’s a learned behavior they use to try to communicate with us.
Definitely not into being licked by any animal. No thanks. Also please don't permit your dog to go up to or near strangers. Thank you 😊
Dogs lick for multiple reasons.
'It's natural'
- Animals lick & groom you to express affections & they also like/need the salts into their diets.
If you taste good : ]
We have a Japanese Akita family member. Whenever we tell him;” I love you handsome boy…. He runs over wraps his arms around the neck and licks our faces. Always been that way
Don't know about the rest of it. But when I ask my Lexie for kisses, she jumps up and gives me kisses. Got nothing to do with food, just affection.
The only time my dogs licks me is when I station him to sit with his paws on my lap and ask him if he’s a good boy and he gives me one touch to my nose. It’s just a trained behavior to affirm our bond.
Yes, they can do that. One little nose tap is gratifying to bite.
I grew up with dogs in our houses. And now I got 5 in mine. Whenever I kiss them on their heads, immediate reaction is to lick my face. That's not for salt.
it means you are covered in millions of germs
Your body is 80% bacteria and retroviruses (germs), which you have no control over.
The exterior of your body is covered with bacteria, even if you've never been near a dog.
Most of that bacteria saves your life.
Go ahead. Kiss a dog. ; )
We just got a new puppy and she licks everyone at every chance she gets. She's doing it to show affection, not because she's hoping we'll feed her or are sweaty lol.
When your dog licks you...he wants so share the earwax he licked off his paw earlier.
She will literally pin your arm down and grab it with her “hands” and lick you till it hurts if you don’t stop her 😅
She gets a lot of exercise and mental stimulation so I know it’s not boredom or whatever, she’s just licky
So what if ur dog licks u when ur not sweaty and don’t have food in ur mouth? Also, when taking your dog out, they’re always smelling.things picking up on all these scents, isn’t that mentally stimulating for them?
The reason a dog licks varies. And in my case it has NOTHING to do with hopes of food 😂
The day I got her (as a puppy), I spit in her mouth.
I won’t let my boy kiss me on the face. He’s caught and eaten three gophers in the past month! HE gets lots of hugs, though!
My boxer eats catshit. Sumbich tries to lick me and he's sleeping on the porch tonite.
My little maltipoo gets up and moves over to me. Gives me a little lick and then snuggles up and takes a massive sigh.
For him it's love you dad. I'm content..
Then why does a dog lick themselves, because they can.
