    That ending line, "Bravely Default is the best Final Fantasy game they've made in over a decade." cracked me up.
    So true, it really is an FF game under a different name. It is so much fun to play though.

    the reason why they dont give you the freedom to explore the other dungeons is because of the feature that allows you to remove any enemy encounters. if you use this feature, you will be able to explore any dungeon and take all the loot without getting punished. and taking high level loot an an early stage would probably remove the difficulty of the game totally.

    The reason why it says "you can't be here yet" is because the game doesn't want you to get access to overpowered items at the beginning of the game. It has a function where you can turn enemy encounters off, making it very easy to get to items that you shouldn't have. It does limit your freedom, which was something I wasn't a fan of, but they did it for good reason.

      I'd say that's a design flaw on their part. Studying the ways of game design really brightens your view of design flaws like these. If they wanted the same sense of freedom, but still have those OP items in there, they could have attempted to hide them away, making them unnoticeable to the player until the player has more information as to where those items are (eg. A map showing it's location). It's nothing too drastic, but a flaw nonetheless.

      +RenoVision Little known fact, the first japanese release of this game lacked many features that were later added in a sort of deluxe edition subtitled "For the sequel", which is what we got in the west. For example you could not speed up battles in the first version, and indeed you could not change the encounter rate. Which makes that argument a little bit less solid.

      +TNB12 Except for the fact that he's reviewing the western version. If anyone ever sees this comment who is thinking about getting Bravely Default, I have just a few things to say.
    ProJared's points about the battle system and features were all good; the combat and job systems are so fun to play around and experiment with, but I strongly disagree with his thoughts on the story.
    Bravely Default's story is, well.., I guess it's pretty much my favorite story to an RPG, ever. I don't believe Jared explicitly stated that he played through the whole thing, but the story isn't as simple as it seems. It _wants_ you to think that it's that simple.
    After a few certain points in the story, you will question your enemy, their motives, yourself and your motives, and if what you _are_ doing and _think_ you are doing are the same things. And at the very end, I guarantee you will have one of the greatest epiphanies of a video game you've experienced in the final fight. There's a reason why the story of Bravely Default is put in the form of a video game and not a movie or book or anime.
    A few last things I'd like to mention - I never really thought the microtransactions were that big of a deal. I only ever looked at the screen to buy the SPs twice in the time frame of two 68-70 hour game playthroughs. Neither of those times did I ever think to buy anything. I never even thought I needed to use Bravely Second at all to win any battle. There's no reason for this feature of the game to ever stray you away from playing it.
    Also... The music is fricking awesome. Seriously.

    • @haydenshaw3183
      @haydenshaw3183 10 лет назад +28

      Yes. Upvote for you sir. I think he does mention at one point, but it was quick. The baddies in the game are portrayed in a way that doesn't make them all that bad.
      As many people I was playing through the fifth chapter and starting to get a little bit bored with what was beginning to feel like a drag. Then (without spoiling too much) after an encounter with a major plot character, I was starting to seriously question their motives. And at some points in the story i was even beginning to agree with the antagonists.
      The story seems simple on the surface, but underneath there is some serious depth. The characters and their motives feel very mature.
      That is all.

      i think he may have been referring to the middle section of the story (chapter 5-7) because it does get pretty bad at that point, its just "awaken the crystals and grind" and it gets quite boring, then the twist about airy pops up and honestly i toyed with the idea of airy being as she is but it was surprising nonetheless

    It's cool that people are both happy and getting excited for this game and I'm not trying to hate or anything. But....
    Please, please PLEASE! Tell me I'm not part of a near dead species here of what I do consider RPG fanatics! Please! Tell me there are more people then I think who want to actually do the 'Role-playing' in 'Role-playing game' anymore!
    It just seems like too often that before anything else is highlighted in an RPG anymore, it's the combat when that's the last thing on my mind when I want to get excited for an RPG.
    What about characters? The flow of the story? The overall vibe and how it's presented? I view those as pretty freaking important!
    In order for me to really believe that RPGs were 'revived' to their former glory, I really need some key elements to a Role-playing game that the community seems to be neglecting, dare I say been shunning over recent years.
    What I want is another RPG where it has a definitive protagonist that has a likable personality to make me want to pretend that I'm him/her. Characters that are introduced one at a time and give enough time to get aquatened with them before finding the next companion. And I want an overall presentation that makes me feel what the main character is feeling whether it be huge, blood-pumping motivation or even sorrow. All that good stuff that makes me want to act out or 'Role-play' my character rather then just controlling him/her.
    Don't get me wrong, I'm sure Bravely is a well made game and I'm not trying to throw a blunt object at people who like it. But from what I've heard and what I tried, it's well made in an area I could honestly give two shits about when getting an RPG.

    • @originalscreenname44

      You're not alone, however some of us have just chosen to pick our battles when it comes to the classic RPG genre. Lately, both story and gameplay have reached a level of insipidness that has gotten me to leave this area of videogames by the wayside since the last generation (and I'm still waiting on something truly worthwhile to win me back). However, someone making a fun twist to the strategy involved in a turn based RPG had me consider (for a split second, mind you) buying a 3DS and this game.
      Sometimes, when it comes to a genre that you love but has been tanking for the better part of a decade, you have to take what you can get. I do prefer story over gameplay (and the time I've spent playing the Disgaea series prove that), but at least something like this coming along shows that Squenix is trying something to give loyal RPG fans a worthwhile experience.

    • @JenoPaciano
      @JenoPaciano 10 лет назад +3

      I agree. As a writer myself, I'm all about a game that can tell an engaging story. In the past, RPGs did that better than any other game type.
      But lately, traditional JRPGs just haven't been holding up their end of the deal. Just look at Final Fantasy 13: a totally linear experience with the most cliche'd characters. I'd rather play Chrono Trigger than something like that. At the same time, western RPGs, which are all about player choice, exploration, and pushing the limits of RPG combat systems, have taken off.
      Making things even worse, most of the well-received JRPGs of late have diverged significantly from the standard formula. Take the Persona series of games, where the main character is largely silent, the environments resemble modern-day Japan with a twist instead of a fantasy world, and the battle systems are unique to the series. Attempts to innovate, rather than produce more of the old formula, seem to be working.
      Putting all of this together, it would be difficult to fund a game that can be described as "another turn-based RPG." But if you describe it as "an innovative take on the RPG genre," and put most of your effort into that aspect of it, funding will come much more easily because that seems to be what people want right now.
      I don't doubt we'll see a resurgence of classic-style RPGs. Just like Disney is making a return to classic Disney animation, but with some changes, I suspect JRPGs will make their return in time.

    • @rainmaker113

      I can definitely agree. The characters, setting and presentation or just as important to me as the gameplay. And while BD has some incredible gameplay, and intuitive systems, the characters just make me uninterested. They're very bland in design, and overall unmemorable. More Final Fantasy III, than IV. I'll still get it soon, but I'm hoping for a more grand RPG soon. It's looking like Monolith's X will scratch that itch.

      oh and I suppose a huge problem would be the fact that one character has a bunny stripper costume. and honestly it doesn't help my views of any game to have such a misrepresented protagonist and it shows that if the damsel doesn't sell then sex will. I feel like there's a level of women's rights that Japan as a whole needs to be introduced to. god I'd love a buff samus.

      ninjatakes4321 On the other hand, it's just a costume and people are free to ignore it. Yes, it's dumb that it's there at all, but if you're going to buy the game anyway don't let it get in your way. And really, in Japan it isn't "sex sells." It's just... fucking Japan. God damnit. On the bright side, the sex appeal tinge was made a lot more tasteful/less obscene depending on your perspective for the west. Purist diehards that don't understand what misogyny is are mad about that, but whatever. It was an improvement.

      But if they used a weapon level up system similar to Fire Emblem's, the problem would be solved. And for healing items, you can't heal beyond your max hp so the usefulness is limited.

    • @YogiofEternalPeace
      @YogiofEternalPeace 10 лет назад +5

      There are systems they could place to prevent that, such as giving you a warning when your average party level is lower than the area and the game locks the encounter rate at %100 as a minimum in those areas.

    • @Msoulwing
      @Msoulwing 10 лет назад

      Well, if you can turn random encounters off, the developers could just stick a static encounter, a guardian if you will, a ways into the cave to prevent you from proceeding into where chests begin to appear.
      I don't know exactly how this prevention system is implemented, but you could also have a locked door somewhere that requires a key item from an earlier dungeon, thus allowing you to enter the dungeon but not make it too far.

    I hope you guys realize that you can end the game at chapter 5.
    chapters 5-8 are all for the "true" ending (which is really satisfying btw)
    so if you don't want to deal with the extra padding, end the game at chapter 6. (chapter 5 is kinda important ish...)

    I re-watched this several weeks after beating the game, and I've decided to give another view point. I NEVER used the Bravely Second option (no wifi) and did not streetpass tag more than 10 people my first play through. So I can say that not using BS probably led to a lot of my deaths, but grinding is so fast and easy in this game, it's not a problem. It's quick, but not to the point of it being a chore, because the enemies ability to Brave and Default always keeps me on guard. Also, I didn't really use a summon, because I didn't have very useful summons. Finally, while I agree the story is cut and dry as far as crystal based RPGs go, what really shines is the characters. My preference for a story is that good characters in an ok story is WAY better than an amazing story with dumb characters. And boy do the main, and even a big chunk of the supporting characters make this better. Honestly, I would give this a 9.5/10, or even a 10/10. Even if the game did drag towards the end, it did not soil the experience for me. My current favorite 3DS so far.

    Bravely Default is Square Enix's best since The World Ends With You... which isn't saying much, but it is a great game. I do feel it weakens in the second half (won't spoil why) but it's all around solid, the 2nd best RPG on the 3DS.

    • @skyerune

      That makes sense, but could be solved by having the chests be turned off if encounters are.

    • @TheReper1210
      @TheReper1210 6 лет назад +1

      The game clearly has an idea of when you're allowed to enter certain areas, so its a game design flaw. They could have just made turning off encounters entirely, or not b allowed to turn them off in the areas higher level than you so you could at least have a chance to get the items and feel rewarded if you make it to them.

    • @Stratelier
      @Stratelier 6 лет назад

      I agree that this 'forced railroading' is occasionally annoying. If they don't want you to explore an area yet, they should allow you to explore it a little and then SILENTLY block your progress forward with something that looks like a natural feature of the dungeon design.
      Compare how Skyrim did it: if a quest-related dungeon wasn't locked outright (i.e. "key required"), you could explore a part of the dungeon only to find it dead-ended, with the quest-relevant section blocked off by e.g. a caved-in corridor (which Skyrim has no shortage of in general, thus it is not conspicuous to find another one).

    • @pawelzybulskij3367
      @pawelzybulskij3367 2 года назад +1

      All JRPG will force to turn around when you enter a dungeon earlier then you supposed to. Whether there is wall of ice and one of character should learn fire further in the plotline or you need key item or ask key character to open the path or your main protagonist says you aren't supposed to be here.

  • @AshXXMayftw
    @AshXXMayftw 10 лет назад +9

    One of the best features of this game is the ability to adjust the rate of encounters to a point where there are no encounters. That's a option I hope they keep in the sequel.

    Great review, probably what got me to buy the game and I'm definitely enjoying it. For my opinion, being restricted in which areas you can go is something of a saving grace for me. I would totally waste hours exploring all of these areas too early, because that's just the kinda dope I am. Since you can turn off random encounters, the monsters wouldn't be there to keep me from breaking in, and I'd probably mess up the story for myself.
    It just works for me, personally.

But how can you call a game with TERRIBLE voice acting, a shallow story that goes groundhog day, no world exploration, and dialogue cutscenes that are just close ups for the characters with no visualization of where they're standing in relation to eachother, 9/10? SnailZorg171 Actually I do. I took on Ouroboros for the most part with just Agnès.
      The others were killed off by his death effect immediately, but she had the Ribbon preventing insta death.
      Even though Tiz died first, I was also already at max level with all Jobs maxed out and one of his passives was the Time Mage's Hasten World meaning both me and the monsters gained an extra BP per turn, so she was able to use the Vampire's Drain HP and Drain up passive abilities to do damage AND heal off everything he'd done every two turns of Defaulting.
      All the better since I had her using the Katana Lore with Two Handed, so the intermediate Defaults kept adding up to being able to do her special fairly quickly (Katana's requiring 5/10/15 Defaults).
      Tiz ended up getting revived to 1 HP due to one of the cutscenes and with his White Magic and Vampire abilities was able to bring back Ringabel and Edea and heal himself back up just in time to Shell Smash with Ringabel and then activate Edea's special for the last hit as I wanted (Baby Bird, her special theme is the best song ever in the history of songs to me now so I wanted the battle to finish with that theme playing), but Agnès could've done it alone.
      The Vampire abilities are very OP. Once I maxed it out, I used it on all but Tiz, who used White Magic instead (more for the defensive, than the restorative magics though it came in handy that last battle to finish it how I planned to from the start and was thinking I wasn't going to at that point).

      SP stands for Sleep Points.
      Pretty much grants you an extra hit. You can have up to 3, and its regained by leaving your 3DS in sleep mode.
      However, if you use up all 3 and dont want to wait hours for it to regain, you can buy sleep points aswell.
      I say its unessesary to hate this, since SP itself is not important at all, and I even forgot about it since its not a normal mechanic youd use on regular battles.

      Relax. You don't need to repeat everything.
      SPOILER: You only need to rebattle the bosses in Ch4 if I recall, and Chapter 5 is literally the same as Chapter 6 but with less dialogue.
      I'd say do Ch4, go right to the crystal in Ch5, and if you want the extra content, go through Ch6 normally. Otherwise, just go to the crystal

    • @VelvetAura
      @VelvetAura 9 лет назад

      Don't worry about it. You only need to do the crystals again up until after Chapter 8. You can _choose_ to fight some of the bosses and do the sidequests again, but it's not a necessity. In fact, once you get strong enough, you can run through each crystal boss easily. Awakening all four crystals in a chapter only took me about 20-30 minutes in chapters 5-8, and that's _with_ traveling. Not to mention that you experience new story elements in chapters 5-8, and you get to unlock some of the best jobs in the game. I promise you, you're missing out. I was a little daunted at first too, but as the others above me are saying, it's not a big deal.

      Chapter 5 I enjoyed, because it changed enough to be interesting still. Chapter 6 I hated. Chapter 7 was one of the most fun chapters in the entire game. Seriously, don't let the structure tear you down. Things do not remain as sedentary as they appear.

It's a bit boring, but I'm happy Bravely Default has lasted me as long as it has compared to other Nintendo games only lasting me about 30 hours.

      Honestly, these chapters aren't even that bad if you keep an open mind. There's new dialogue and it's not the exact same dialogue from the previous chapters (especially in 7 and 8 where it's brand new). If you actually just played through the game, taking in whatever the game gives to you, you wouldn't feel these chapters were bad at all.

    only thing I need to know about is the game's length. I'm tired of a lot of 3DS games not keeping me held on for that long. Pheonix Wright was short, Link Between Worlds was abysmally short, and many others just don't last long enough. I want another 3DS game, besides Monster Hunter, to hold me over for a long time.

      That is true. But I got so into the game that I didn't want to stop playing. I didn't really think about it because it was a visual novel, though. I guess I was just disappointed because I thought the fun would have lasted a bit longer. I'm not, in any way, saying the game was bad, oh no, loved it. The disappointment came from when it all ended, cause I didn't want it to.

    My view on the repetitive mid to end game was totally loving it. The game was so immersive, I was thrilled to see the improvement in my characters. It never felt bad to me, but I can see how it could be bothersome to people less enthused by turn based RPGs.
    I never understood people who could simply NOT finish the game. You could turn off the random encounters, devise some strategy for simple leveling so you don't fall behind, and explore different customizations for your party each time you fight a boss. For me it was a blessing, not a curse, I mean the REASON people play RPGs are for the boss fights, right?
    However! I can understand the point that the laziness of design is saddening, when much more development could have been added instead of padding. That being said, there were several things to do added for each revisit, and even though the story was the same, unlocking extra story, jobs and side quests with every iteration definitely wasn't stale.

      I know right! Did people forget that this was one of the most customizable, do it your own way kind of jrpg ever created? The convenience was such a breath of fresh air, apart from the incredible soundtrack and how every single character continued to develop until the end.

    Thank you for this, Jared. I bought the game because of this video, and I do not regret it. The description of the plot was quite accurate, and the game mechanics are amazing. Probably the two reasons I loved the game mechanics most was the level of customizational depth and that there was no single overpowered strategy, leaving your job/ability combination out of personal preference, not pre-determined by power. This rating really reflected my feelings as a player, and for that I thank you.

    I like how you mention in the end that is the best Final Fantasy SquareEnix has made in a decade. So true. Only 3 real gameplay issues I have
    1) You can very easily build teams that destroy most any boss battle with no real effort, regardless of if you put the difficulty at Easy, Normal or Difficult, relatively early on(only a bit past halfway through the game), taking away any real sense of challenge if you're willing to grind for even just an hour or two
    2) Some boss battles are ridiculously difficult regardless of the difficulty setting, whereas others I was yawning from boredom even when I put it on Max Difficulty
    3) Linear as hell. I get there are usually some fun sidequests, but like Jared said, exploration is non-existent

    • @shinjirohitsuguya5662
      @shinjirohitsuguya5662 9 лет назад +4

      Bravely Default has a lot of similarities to the Golden Sun series. The Djinn effect is basically the Jobs, and the four elements are there, and the dark and light as well. I think that Camelot Software Planning had a lot of potential there, the same as Square Enix. But I am afraid I must admit that I have preferred the GBA duology of the series over the DS single sequel. The thing I fathom is that the series would have been better if the Duology was actually remastered into nowadays's gaming standards like most of our favourite old school ganes are instead of rushing into an unfinished projet like Dark Dawn.

    I feel like SP is the only flaw in the game, and the bosses having sooooo muuuccchhh heaaalth. Oh and the fact that silencing your opponent cannot be done on boss mages, which is probably the only reason why you'll use it. Gr8. Other than that, I LOVE THIS GAME. YOU ARE A BLESSING ON THIS EARTH SQUARE ENIX. Oh and a small thing that bugs me when people send me Lv 99 nemesises. Like seriously? Lv 99?! How am I supposed to beat that thing!

    • @papershadow
      @papershadow 8 лет назад +1

      +Papyru My only issue with the SP is the fact that it's the only way to break the 10k-per-hit damage limit. A lot of other FF style games have certain moves or things like Accessories that allow a move to exceed that cap if it's strong enough.
      The Boss HP I can see being an issue, but in the late game you've got so many options to dish out ludicrous damage between things like the Buff stacking and class combinations, that the bosses have their health chewed down surprisingly fast.

    • @aceelle6557
      @aceelle6557 8 лет назад

      you're not supposed to be able to beat the Nemesis, a Nemesis is something you can't escape, meaning you can't beat it unless you level up like a maniac. They're mostly just there to offer good items, so just steal or mug then run away like a mad man.
      And yeah, of course you can't silence boss mages! If your characters can equip silence nullifiers and nullifying abilities, so can they.

    • @dragonpower0
      @dragonpower0 8 лет назад

      Victoria F. Stein
      You make a good argument. However, first of all, the Nemesis's steal drops are pretty crappy, the only one is the lv 25 nemesis which elixers sell for 2.5k pg, other than that killing the nemesis are to get perma stat boosting buns, so they are meant to be killed.
      Second, if we can't silence boss mages, then whats the use of that status? Because honestly you'll come to that point where silencing normal enemies would be useless, and that's like mid to late chapter 3 when you get OP against normal monsters.
      And I felt we should be allowed to do that to create an even playing field, like boss mages that group casts Silence, why can they do that? They can group cast silence when we can't even single target silence them, early game its true because it's only one boss, but *spoiler* how about later when you battle more than one boss at the same time?

    • @aceelle6557
      @aceelle6557 8 лет назад

      Papyru when you battle more than one boss in the boss rush I used Bravely Second a lot and also, you're expected to be at a level to understand how to equip poison and silence nullifiers. Also, there's always the option of raising your mind stat. And bosses can use group cast poison because they're a higher level mage as well. White mages can learn an ability where the healing magic doesn't decline when group casting, while black mages learn an ability where you can _only_ group cast on enemies(even with poison and silence spells). It's safe to assume the bosses have unlocked these abilities considering that they're... Bosses.
      I've never successfully killed a Nemesis, but I know the stat buns make your character really OP so why would the game make it easy to do something like that? It's mostly for more dedicated players who are willing to put in the time to over level and then increase stats even more.
      And honestly (wow this is really out of order) I never used spells like silence and poison that often except against crystal bosses/dragons. Elemental magic is always your best friend, and death spells cost so much MP and are usually blocked with a safety ring that those are basically useless... Mages in general just pale in comparison to Spell Fencers, which is probably why they got rid of it in BSEL... Okay, I'll just end this before I start talking about spell Fencers and how awesome they are.^^;;

    • @SSBBPlayListMaker
      @SSBBPlayListMaker 8 лет назад +8

      +Swiggity Swag There are ways to make it interesting, however.
      Without going into spoilers too much, I will say that with each chapter I found something new to make it a worthwhile chapter.
      Chapter 5 I rematched every previous boss, and with that I came across new dialogue offering new insight to the characters we seen before, with a few new twists thrown into a couple of them.
      Chapter 6 allows for the final job to be unlocked, so there I went ahead and did that.
      Chapter 7, breaking out of order, I went after the long vampire sidequest for the technically second to last job, and that entertained me enough.
      Chapter 8 was the final chapter, so enough said.
      Even though I had to rematch all the 4 main bosses, I never had much issue personally, and the way I handled each chapter made it seem like it isn't as bland as people make it out to be. The player decides how monotonous and boring it may be, and I made my adventure count all the way through.

    Just finished this game two days ago for the first time, and I'm never playing it again. It was SO close to being a masterpiece for me. The music, the characters, the combat / job system...great stuff! Better than great, beautiful even!
    ...until you get to the second half, where it all falls to hogshit. Doing the awakenings FIVE TIMES was twice too many. The writing takes such a deep plunge that I was left scratching my head at how anyone signed off on this, and it makes every single person in the story look like an idiot. It sets up that the Awakenings are bad, but we do them anyway--that is okay in and of itself (you don't take the enemy at their word, after all), but the villains never bother explaining WHY they're bad. We carry around extended evidence of future plot points in the form of D's Journal, but even after establishing that Ringabel reads this book cover-to-cover multiple times and adds in his notes, he's too stupid to put the obvious signs together. The entire game could have been solved in five minutes if people actually TALKED to each other like ADULTS.
    And the most egregious sin I found was the cutscenes where Ringabel tells Tiz that Airy is evil, and then Tiz tells Agnés about it while Sage Yulyana and the Journal corroborate his story. We have directly seen that the party is aware that "Awakening + Airy = something horrible called The Harrowing". And then when Airy turns on you after the fifth awakening, they have the ACTUAL TESTICULAR ELEPHANTIASIS to be SURPRISED. It takes them COMPLETELY off-guard.
    There are SO many plot holes and moments of contradiction, and reading reviews tells me that people praised the writing as above-average, which blew my mind. I'm not going to insult anybody who enjoys it--God only knows how many story plots of games I love won't pass muster under the same scrutiny--but the continued, RIDICULOUS idiocy of all the characters involved combined with the glacially grinding tedium of reawakening the crystals over and over again just wore me down to the point where I finished it out of spite rather than any real desire to see the story to its conclusion.
    ------------------------------------
    I don't like being completely negative, so I'm going to list a bunch of stuff I LOVED about the game:
    * The music, especially Tiz and Edea's Special Attack themes.
    * Agnés' voice actress. Seriously, the woman who voiced the vestal didn't bring her A game, she brought her SSS Gold Plated Amazing Game. Especially when she gets frightened or angry.
    * Sage Yulyana being voiced by Cam Clarke, one of my favorite voice actors. Dude's got pipes.
    * The sheer variety of jobs and costumes, ensuring that you're always a single Job selection away from a winning strategy.
    * The willingness to explore darker themes.
    * The reveal that the symbols on Airy's wings are a countdown. I never took any real notice of her wings, so when Ringabel dropped that they look like numbers, it felt like a legit bombshell and added some much-needed tension to the plot's back half.

      Ckarasu But there are still there, taunting you. The thing with the micro-transactions in this game is that they shouldn't be there in the first place even if they are almost irrelevant because it is a full price release. Micro transactions in a game is like having a serpent around you, you know it's gonna bite, but you don't know when. In free to play games it is ok, because you play them knowing that in some way or another you may need to pay if you want to advance faster, but when is a full price release like this it is not acceptable, you already paid your $30 to $60 bucks for the game and they still trow you the serpent, and that is bullshit.

    • @ProfessionalTsundere
      @ProfessionalTsundere 10 лет назад

      I kinda wonder if the micro transactions used a lot of play coins instead of money if people would hate them so much, because a lot of games seem to do that. Like in SMT IV you can use play coins to revive your character when you die.

    The one point about Bravely Default that so many reviewers seem to be leaving out (a point that really ruined the game for me) is there's absolutely no exploration outside of the current tasks. I'm glad you mentioned it a bit. But you didn't mention the fact that all of the towns and locations are essentially just lifeless drawings. You can't explore them at all. Such a shame because it feel like just the shell of a fantasy world.

    • @chebob2009
      @chebob2009 10 лет назад

      Yeah I hope so. I'm guessing it was down to the small budget for a new IP. Cos it's kind of a con that the world of Luxendarc looks quite large on the surface. But then you explore the towns and locations and you realise the whole world is actually smaller than Midgar or Lindblum.

    • @JazGalaxy
      @JazGalaxy 10 лет назад

      I think maybe you just had expectations that this game wasn't trying to meet. Exploring big towns was never really part of the early square RPG games. in Final Fantasy, especially, most towns could be fully explored in about 10 minutes. I think , as this series progresses, it will break out of trying to emulate the old school games and grow an identity of it's own, but yeah. If you want it to be like the latter FF games, then FF13 is your game.

    • @chebob2009
      @chebob2009 10 лет назад

      Well Bravely Default is closest in style to the PS1 Final Fantasies. And those are huge in comparison. Exploring midgar could take hours. Lindblum or Alexandria could take at least 20 minutes each. And the problem is, Bravely Default is presented in a similar way. I'd have no problems if it had just been clear that it was a much smaller world. But the first main location you go to in the game is called a "city". That's really quite mischievous when there are only 3 different screens to explore.

    • @JazGalaxy
      @JazGalaxy 10 лет назад

      I don't understand why you're saying it's closest in style to the Playstation games. It's the sequel to FF3. Four characters. Job system. Crystals. It's clearly emulating the PRE-Playstation games.

      there really kinda is. I agree with alot of ppl relighting the four crystals 12 times over was kinda annoying, since their was no new storyline plot. Fighting the bosses again I enjoyed, each new world the bosses became more fleshed out, you got a bit more of who they were. On a side note without the extra worlds you wouldn't have gotten the "Bad ending." Since shattering the crystal during the first world was near impossible for me anyway. I believed Airy, I believed the world would return to normal.

    Bravely Default was a fantastic game. yes it is a bit repetitive 3/4 of the way in, but to combat this if you want the true ending you can easily cheese the Crystal boss fights. Ninja job, Acrobatics as secondary abilities, make sure all members have Spear Lore ability equipped. Buff your speed or strength as necessary and have one person with the Hasten World ability from the Time Mage equipped. Then all you have to do is continue to use the High Jump ability, set the game to auto and increase combat speed. Use this build on your party and if you turn off encounters you can activate all 4 crystals in 15 minutes if you know where to go. There are other builds you can use to cheese the bosses, this one just worked for me. The other boss fights; though, they are repeats in later chapters do reveal interesting lore behind the story and characters and especially in later chapters can put your team building skills and combat prowess to the test. So, they do repeat in a way but 1. they are completely optional and 2. it's a totally different experience and that's never a bad thing (at least from my point of view).
    P.S this game has the most interesting use of gyro and camera controls i have seen to date on the 3ds, especially the closing scene.

    I totally loved this game. All the way up to beating the Grand Marshal and Alternis it was amazing. It left a sense of mystery and awe and mind fuck and I didn't even know what was happening. Then after Ringabell got his memory back and I was still so invested. But after that I kinda just wanted to be done with the game, Airy telling me to awaken the crystals over and over was so tedious, and even though the side missions were skippable, I still felt a desire to see them through. I ended up accidentally discovering about the Alternate ending when looking up the Elixir way to beat Lich. So I did that. But I think the ending was worth 100% all the pointless awakenings. The helplessness and the being feeling of being trapped, really resonates when looking back at the end. Also the pure strategy to defeat both bosses was staggering (Stillness MVP). And the sages words "to think and act on your own" and "having the courage to disobey," really are a message to the player. If you blindly follow people, you'll end up doing shit you don't want t, but if you think for yourself and make your own decisions you'll get something better (the easier boss fight). "A man chooses, a slave obeys" am i right?

    The main fault I have with this game is like many others. The repetitive nature of the last few chapters. The game took me about 60 hours to finish. If streamlining those last few chapters brought the game down to 40 or 45 I would of preferred that. 60 hours on a JRPG is more than enough especially for a handheld. The rest of the game I feel is fantastic and well paced. Just during those repetitive chapters I recall basically yelling at my 3DS, "ALRIGHT, I GET THE POINT!".

      Max Rome Yeah I feel although it was a bit annoying it didn't really take away the overall quality of the game as much as people seem to make it out to be. Sure, it got repetitive but that doesn't mean the rest of the game should be dismissed. Also you are right it did flesh out the characters more. Perhaps they could of done it a more streamlined way but all in all it really isn't that huge of a deal.

      Andrew Phillips I didn't have an insane amount of problems with those repetitive chapters. They only took me about 2-3 hours total. Then again I had just finished playing through other repetitive jrpg's so maybe I was used to it.

    I actually disagree a bit with ProJared when it comes to the voice acting. I've switched a number of times between the English voice mode and the Japanese voice mode (especially early on) and where I can understand the choices in the Japanese voice cast, I can't say the same for the English voice cast. You can do so in the game's options, allowing you to pick which you prefer hearing while being able to read along with in the English script, which is a welcomed feaature. There is also the Event Viewer feature which allows you to rewatch any scenes that have happend in your game, with the option of either English or Japanese voice, which is really nice since it makes it that the player isn't forced into another play through to hear both casts.
    I understand that a game with so many characters would be extremely expensive to localize if every character had their own unique phenominal voice actor/actress, that is why I will focus on the voices of the main/major characters ... mostly.
    Out of the main 4, Edea has the best voice acting, even with the "questionable voice directing" that Jared mentions. Tiz and Ringabell are alright, nothing cringe worthy. What is cringe worthy is Agnes. Good lord! Now at the time I am writing this I have not beat the game, so I do not know if she goes over this huge character change where her voice acting bedcomes amazing. As it stands, its pretty bad. I feel they/she was trying way to hard to have this "innocent, sheltered little girl" feel to it to the point it feels really artificial and obnoxious. Just ... bad. There was also the Summoner and Huntress bosses that were hard to swallow. The Summoner was a good moment in itself, one of those "dark moments" that Jared mentioned, its just again the execution seemed really "over-tried".
    Thats not to say that the English cast is all bad. Far from it. The Sword Master is well casted with a voice many eng-dubbeed anime watchers know (and love?) and it was awesome hearing the voice of the Imperial Guard from Elderscrolls IV: Oblivion as one of the Soldiers (oh if only he said something about stopping or criminal scum!) but it does sadly leave a lot to be desired, which (at least for me) took away from the games experience.

    That micro transaction was...... "UNACCEPTABLE!"
    On a side note, the game's titles. Remove the F's from the titles.
    Flying Fairy becomes "Lying Airy" hinting towards the plot, but this game in of it self, breaks the 4th wall and acknowledges that it did so.
    Just like "Where The Fairy Flies" It says "Airy Lies" In red letters at some point.
    The game's plot goes deeper than one might think. As you discover the alternate timelines etc crossing over and it's revealed who some people really are.

    • @trueMCGRaven
      @trueMCGRaven 8 лет назад

      it is actually the other way around with the red letters :P the Where the F---- f---- becomes Red and shortly after vanishes. And i believe this only happens at the point in time where you are forced to repeatedly redo the timeline with a few changes and is alluding to the "bad" or "false" ending. This would also be why it is so obvious at that point. They are BAITING the Player to fuck up and get the wrong ending.

    • @megazero2735
      @megazero2735 8 лет назад

      I honestly dont know if we can really call it "bad" ending though, since *spoiler alert* it just make sense that we did notice Airy's lying with all the evidence and Ringabell's memory, and we try to stop her right there. And the Crystal didnt "break" completely anyway so Anges could easily restore it later to bring back the balance and stuff. The only different is that Oroborous isnt kill right at that moment should that happen, so in the very distance future when the crystal is back and somehow gone out of control again, linking the last few worlds to the chain and awaken Oroborous then people will have some problem, but as far as the original party goes they have a "happy ending" where they stop Airy from achieving that and may even find away to close the link later, stopping Oroborous from even awaken in the first place.

    I think my least favorite part about the game definitely has to be chapters 5-8. It's incredibly repetitive and gets really, really, annoying (especially the water guardian). The bosses spike in difficulty right before the end, and I had a good amount of trouble with the final bosses. Otherwise great game.

      Yeah I agree. I know it sort of fit with the storyline but after the what 4th or 5th time? I lost count, it just gets overly repetitive. I found myself thinking "Okay okay I get the point". It makes that part of the game drag a little but despite that it is one of the best JRPGs I've played in years.

      Really? It reminded me of Final Fantasy IV/VI/Tactics but free-roaming in a 3D environment instead of a 2D static fight screen/isometric fixed point turn based. If you wanted to you could personally input every battle command according to the ATB gauge, or you could create your own in depth automation script for them to run when you weren't specifying what you wanted them to do. If anything, the combat in XII was the best of any FF so far in how flexible it was with player choice and depth of possibility. o.O
      What makes you say it was very un-FF like?

    3 months after the review I finally get my own copy and it's amazing. And while the story line may not be anything new in terms of JRPGs it still captivates me because yes, it's almost the same journey but even so these are different people going about it they're own way. The voice acting is really good too and at times I think it's intentionally so we may have something to laugh at. Who didn't give a small chuckle the first time they heard Edea grump "Mrgrgr." Agnes's voice acting is the one that stands out the most so far. I know for sure she changed accents in between the scenes where I first met her and during the chase through the cavern area.

    By the way, I think starting a new game will instantly refill your SP for free, so just save, go back to the title screen, select an empty file, skip the intro cutscenes, back to title screen, delete new file, go back to your game and there you go. (I'm not sure if it still works but it does work with the Bravely Second demo)
