  • Bravely Default 2 Review for the Nintendo Switch! As a big fan of the first two Bravely Default games, this new one for a console had a lot to prove to me.
Bravely Default II is the third game in the Bravely series, following the original game, Bravely Default and its direct sequel Bravely Second: End Layer. While Second was a direct story continuation from the original, Default II features a new story and cast of characters. Similar to prior titles, the game plays as a role-playing video game with turn-based battles. The game also contains a variant of the prior game's "Brave Point" system, and use of collecting different "asterisks" to change a character's job class.

Videos like this proves why Jared is so good. He's not just funny, he's critical about what he's reviewing. He knows what he's talking about and can explain it all in a quick and understanding manner, a ten-minute review is ten minutes of information that is all important for a viewer to see/hear and for the review as a whole. When he's biased, he'll say it, but he still doesn't let that sway him from ignoring a flaw that should not be ignored. When Jared is giving a normal, legitimate review, it deserves to be heard in full.

I kinda prefer the adjustable random encounters option from the last 2 games as it helps a lot when I need to grind, its way faster to just crank the encounter meter to the max and voila youre entering battles every 5 seconds, its also super useful when you just want to move on and not find any enemies at all, however that system came with the downside of making the dungeons feel kinda empty and the final dungeon underwhelming as there was nothing of a challenge besides the final boss at the end if you just disable the battles(which I did since I was already level 99 and mastered all the jobs I wanted at that point).
on the other hand seeing the enemies on the screen makes the dungeons feel less empty and at least have a chalenge besides the boss.
However grinding did become much more annoying in Bravely default 2 compared to the previous ones, I hated having to run after the monsters the monster treats are not as commons and I dont like having to run after the monsters and cornering them to get the consecutive battles, it wastes a lot of time for no reason and even then the bonuses didnt feel as big as bravely second in the end despite requirng way more effort.

In defense of Bravely Second, it has done features I really miss in this game, like being able to save your favorite party builds (one for grinding, one for boss fights, etc). Also I knew going from 2 screens to 1 was going to set it back some. The first two had better menu and map navigation. This game’s map just gets in the way. I once stop to reorient myself with the map open after a fight only to get in another one WHILE STANDING STILL.

@@KainYusanagi For me it's exactly that and I agree with the 8/10. I love BD, played both the first and Bravely Second.
I'm playing BD2 like crazy, and while the weak story isn't that much important for me since I play it for the gameplay, it does bring down the score for me.
As for the QoL stuff, dude I think Jared actually didn't cover all of the problems in my opinion:
      - For starters, there's no dungeon map, so you gotta remember all the exploring you did, which can be pretty difficult when you're stopping to battle here and there.
      - You can't see the quests you completed!! No "All Quests" list.
      - You can't "Brave" on action choices like in BS. When you wanna use a command 4 times, instead of braving it 4x and choosing it once, you gotta brave 4x then choose it 4 times.
      - You can't see enemy info such as HP and BP all the time on the screen without pressing X.
      - There's no way to interrupt your brave action choices when you realise you don't wanna use all those turns (Bravely Second's "Stop" Command).
      - Small thing, but whenever you change equipment, you gotta wait for the character's animation to end before leaving menus. It just annoys because it's so unnecessary.
What hurts the most is that some of these are kind of no-brainers, and since they were in previous games, they hurt more.

The gameplay is quite perfect, but the game has many flaws. Thr sidequest system is definately not good, too repetetive, mostly terrible written. The story is ok, definately far worse than BD1, but not as utrerly garbage as BD2, the characters have an insanely good chemistry better than in BD1, but thr story is only centered about Yew and the other chars only act like an emotional support for him, which was not the case in bd1. The classes are imo far easier breakable than in bd1, which is imo a drawback. There might be more reasons as to why i wouldnt call it a masterpiece, but it definately is a million times better than trash default 2 and a solid game overall.

    • @skycastrum5803
      @skycastrum5803 3 года назад

@@Tools-yt4sk It's really too bad about the side quests. What they were going for with them was pretty solid story-wise, and mechanically it worked well too, allowing for some variety in playthroughs. But the concept of 2 old bosses opposing each other got old pretty quick, especially after repeating everything. Plus it really cuts into the impact of a difficult moral decision if you need to choose both in the same playthrough.
The story is hard for me to judge, because as I mentioned earlier, I love the backstory, and learning about it really solidified a bunch of other characters for me. Sort of agree about the story being a bit too Yew-centric, though the rest of the party have their moments, and the chemistry is great. The bestiary is also a treat. Wish more games did it like that.

I dislike random encounters, so I think getting rid of them in favor of visible encounters is good, but, I miss the macro-system. I miss being able to afk grind levels. The bossfights of these games are the real highlights and if possible I'd prefer being able to skip all encounters except for bosses, but alas that doesn't seem to be where the series is headed. My biggest issue is the game's poor optimisation. Brief frame-rate dips, laggy loading screens and the game freezing for a second everytime you open a party chat feels bad and is a bit inexcusable considering that the switch CAN run games that, in theory should lag more than this rpg.

3:10 But most JRPGs (I'm not including strategy RPGs) aren't that mindless. You manage resources, or like legend of legaia you time for spirit to do more next turn similar to bravely default.
I get how the status debuffs are useless vs bosses, but I've played a lot of strategic stuff; saga games even have you learn new moves mid battle, and some games are formation heavy. Heck shin megami tensei games which I don't even like thrives upon weaknesses making extra turns.
Breath of fire 3 had observe and dragon genes which were fun too with the master system for replay value. Phantasy star IV had macros for specific moves to speed up battles without needing to guess unlike dragon quest AI, and combination magic if you had a guide.
First game had a far better story imo but this review was pretty lame there to say that, but at least he acknowledged the terrible story at the start which the demo made me avoid. 6:35 alone not worth $60.

Chance to target is basically "Threat" done backwards. A concept MMO players will probably be familiar with. You can choose a weaker weapon (normally weaker) to reduce threat but increase survivability. Or deliberately give your heavily armed warrior a high "Chance to target" set of gear and basically "tank" with them while those with much lower "CTT" gear heal and assist.
It's a great mechanic that works perfectly in turn based games I'm amazed I have never seen it before.

thx for the review man, i owned this game for over 2 years got it when it finally came out after i played the demos 3 months before that. after playing it for like 3 or 4 hours i gave up on it because it was kindda hard and i dont know what i was doing. then i just replaying octopath travler instead and had over 400 hours on that game and still loved it. now after purchasing triangle strategy and octopath 2 i question myself on why i still haven't go back and try to play bravely default 2 so i looked up some videos on tips guides and tricks or just more info about the game in general so i can familiar myself with the game enough so that i can enjoy it and not waste a possibly a great game. after watching your review it definitely made me want to play it more now and try to maybe start on easy mode first this time lol. but it will be hard to juggle between basically 3 amazing games. the struggle of a rich retired young person sigh...

@@kenkune55 it is possible to only do it in that amount of time. However there are some people (myself included) that took forever to actually win the card game due to struggling with some of the concepts/rules. In these cases it can take between 2-4 hours plus the opinions of deck optimizing from the internet once the person finally accepts that looks for a guide that actually provides good decks instead of just saying beat the character at cards is a good idea. The thing you forgot to mention is that grinding in this game is much better option than in other RPG's. With the addition of the Consecutive Battles system.
Getting an JP/XP/PG(money) Bonus for doing battles in a Row is a great way of speeding up progress. Giving you incentive to get stronger in various way's if your struggling.
Now personally, I didn't do that until the end game, and I had all the jobs unlocked. And playing on Hard Mode made that Super fun. I never had to fight a battle and think "I need to grind more". I just needed to approach each fight in a different way.
Fun story, I was even struggling at one point and though to myself "I should probably switch this to normal". And as I was doing it, the game literately said "You've come So Far on Hard, are you sure you want to lower the difficulty Now?".
The game Literately gave me a Pep-Talk! So I tackled it in a different way 1 more time, and Won!
Now That is a sign of a Good RPG.

I love the fact that you can be grinding while your not even playing. More RPG’s need to do this. A quality of life improvement for those who work.

Thumbs up! Thanks for explaining it in less than 40sec that it is a stand alone. So it's not like a normal sequel that continues the story right? It's more like how Final Fantasy is where each sequel is its completely own world?

Fantastic review :). I'm glad fans of old school rpgs have something new to check out. My biggest criticism for this game is simply that it's not for me. I enjoy turn based jrpgs but never find myself craving the ones which are so traditional.

A big thing for me that helps combat/grinding in general is the amount of mini game type stuff to do. Things like, Foraging, thieving and other abilities not only give me something else to do in combat they also general help the grind be quicker. Also, the ability to chain battles and get up to a x3 multiplier on jobs makes grinding those up pretty painless as well. I maxed every job I got right away, because it would only take a few minutes to do so.

Elvis' crystal awakening scene is easily the best of the main cast, hands down.

  • @vDomMusic
    @vDomMusic 3 года назад

    On the accent of Elvis,
I'm Scottish and so is Steven Cree (Elvis' VA) and his accent is absolutely perfectly Scottish. The thing people from the rest of the world forget is that even though Scotland is small, there are so many different accents. For example, People from Glasgow and people from Aberdeen sound completely different but both are Scottish. A bad Scottish accent would be Simon Pegg from the Star Trek movies.
