Fly Tying: A Quick, Easy and Highly Productive Streamer Pattern the Copper Top

- If you are new or a seasoned fly tier, the Copper Top Streamer is an articulated fly which has proven itself time and time again for trout, smallmouth bass, walleye and even carp! One look at the fly when it's wet helps you understand why. The size, blending of materials, articulation and weight at the front all make this fly come to life in the water! The key is to minimize materials, give the illusion of transparency and progressively build the taper. In this video, I will walk you through material preparation, and then teach you how tie this life-like pattern.

Like your foam organizer, good idea! Easy as heck to make! Thanks!
That's the idea! Simple and easy!
neat idea for the marabou stacker/holder
No need to spend $25 on something that you can make from leftover packaging. Love that thing and still use it today!
I love this fly and the way you put it together, definatly going to try a couple of these, thsnks
Ernie the fly is amazing! Enjoy!!
Great wee pattern thanks all the best fae Scotland and tightlines.
Glad you enjoyed it
That’s a great looking fly. Thanks for sharing. 🙏😇
Glad you like it… it’s a fish catching machine!! 🎣🎣
Easy and beautiful pattern , i'll try sono .Thank You for sharing it
Good luck!
nice tie,! It would drive me crazy tying flies in an arcade!!! ;-)
Thanks! You and me both!
Love this pattern and how you used synthetics to tie sparse but yet give a full appearance. Most articulated flies are tied too dense. I am going to tie this pattern for Kentucky Lake!!!!
You're going to love it's movement and fish catching abilities! One of my favorite flies!!
fire.
Thanks man! It's such a fun fly to fish!!!
Just love u man your style is empicable bro applause man
Thank you so much 👊👊
Love that fly bro!!!👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Ohhh it’s sooo good!! Thanks!
@@TroutTornado 🤙🏽
Excellent thank you Sir
My pleasure Myles! Glad you enjoyed it!
The chunks of marabou you tossed are just fine. They've just been rode hard and put away wet! just brush it out and its just as good as any other parts of the feather...
Yeah and at the cost of tying materials best to save and re-use what we can!
@@TroutTornado Speaking of saving money, I bought a feather duster and have been using those ostrich feathers to tie everything from streamers to small scuds and sow bugs! The feathers you get in one of those dusters have a range of colors from grey to dark brown. Its been one of the best things i've bought for tying flies! 100s of flies in 9 dollar duster! my biggest fish was caught on a feather duster streamer (22 inch brown)
That's awesome!!
Good job.
Thanks Manuel!
Amazing
I absolutely love this fly! Hope you enjoy fishing it!!
Nice Pattern.... When fishing Wild Browns I find anything that looks like a Small Brown Trout Works well...
Yeah and you can change the colors to match any baitfish! So good!
So it’s pretty much a barely legal and laser legal in one? Looks like a fantastic pattern
Really it’s just a version of the laser legal. I tie so many different variations of it that I named this one a copper top because of the blend of materials.Hope you enjoyed the video.
Good job
Thanks Kelly!
nice thanks
Most welcome!
Hello very nice good job
Thank you very much!! Enjoy!!
ik bedoel bij al de vliegen die je nog gaat maken , bij voor baat dank namens ons.
het is mijn genoegen
Lol... you have tied Kelly Galloup's Laser Legal. If you hadn't known of the laser legal, it is a fly pattern I think many of us have thought up or stumbled upon while experimenting. It just makes sense, and it works!
Yeah amazing pattern! Such a great fly!
Good call on the lavender & great looking fly. I was thinking a little red on the gill plate. I bet that things pays the bills.
Dude it’s a great fly and you’re right it catches a lot of fish! 🎣🎣👍👍
I'm really excited with this fly. Thanks for your time and knowledge on the way to articulate this fly. My thoughts of mono instead of wire? Where I fish the gamefish have teeth and they just eat your fly's up.. In the past I used Paula Bunyan's I even have the molds. Use them for walleyes , stripper and bass.
I have 25 lb mono, never failed me with a toothy critter. Doesn't mean it couldn't happen! The thing that drives me crazy with wire is that it wears out. I have coppertops that have caught 100 plus fish all with the mono articulation! But I'd hate to have you use mono and lose a trophy! Best of luck and thanks for the feedback!
I am interested in the fact that here is the first pattern where two plastic balls did not fit into the joint, why not here? Is it irrelevant, or did you forget the articulation balls? Thanks
Love the streamer! Gonna take a crack at it. On the veevus 100 thread, what material size are you using? Online I see 6/0,8/0,10/0,14/0 and 16/0. Im new to tying. Thanks.
Veevus 100, GSP thread... awesome!!
This would of worked even better with spey hackle, its real wispy you can lay whole feathers on the side that make it look alive. I tie something like this and went with spey hackle instead of marabou, whiting makes a beautiful pro grade wispy spey hackle necks that no one comes close to matching.
Thanks for the 💡 idea! I'll have to try it out ... Just so you know the Marabou works amazing too! 😉
Awesome fly can’t wait to tie it. What are those sculpting scissors?
Anvil tapering scissors!
@@TroutTornado awesome thank you!
Hi, great looking fly. I am new to this so excuse me if a dumb question. How does the fly stay the right way up in the water? (I have watched others where they coil weight on the hook for balance I assumed.)
Never a dumb question! So when you have equal materials in the top and bottom of the hooks the fly keels, also you need to have the right hooks... Typically you weight the hooks if either balance is off.
@@TroutTornado Thanks for the response. It is a great-looking fly.
The Lavender Starburst has been discontinued sadly, any thoughts on a substitute material? Sorry about the double comment, had the wrong pattern the first time haha.
Oh man that stinks, best bet would be to use pale pink starburst. Tight lines!!
@@TroutTornado I didn't even think of that and my FTD order is already on it's way sadly. I grabbed a light purple dubbing they had and a pack of lavender Ice Dub, I'm hoping one of them will work and look as nice as yours. Are thinning scissors a must? I'm new to streamer patterns and don't own any.
Those colors will work, also UV Pink Ice Dub. Thinning scissors are not a must but they really make tapering the fly easier. So I guess you would say the help the fly catch the fisherman, not the fish! :)
Voorhaak - Gamakatsu - B10S #6 (30 mm lengte, 15 mm opening)
Achterhaak - Daiichi - 2460 #6 (30 mm lengte, 10 mm opening
Where you located pilgrim? I want to know if these are eastern browns or W. However, I believe this would be hot either coast
I’m on the East Coast but I guarantee they’ll catch fish anywhere!
Wish they were for sale.
A friend of mine has started to tie them… direct message me on Instagram and I’ll put you in contact.
What kindd of vise is that? Thanks
It a HMH TRV Spartan! I love it!
Hello, I want to ask what exactly are the ribbed shears for trimming called? Do they work better... I would like to order eight of them, do you have a link where they can be bought in Europe?
thank you, I wrote to you on Instagram.
They are Anvil Taperizer Scissors, search and you will find them.
The Taperizer is a must for every tier! This family of scissors was specifically designed to permit the thinning of synthetic and natural wing materials. The special slots allow the thinning and blending of fibers in one easy step, giving a lifelike appearance in far less time than conventional methods.
Stainless Steel construction and Ice Tempering gives extra cutting life. Vinyl coated user-adjustable handles conform to a wide range of tying styles.
Looks a lot like an Emerald Shiner in the water rI bet.
With some slight changes in Laser Dub it’ll look like any minnow you like in the water. 😀
How can I just buy half a dozen of these from you?
Sorry man! I don’t sell them which is why I share how to tie them.
@@TroutTornado I do tie, but that is way above my pay grade! If you know of anyone who would tie some for me please let me know.
please drop that crazy background noise it's terrible
Sorry man, fixed for all future videos!
