- The copper John is an extremely versatile pattern. You can tie it in a myriad of colors simply by changing out the color of wire. My favorites are Copper, Amber, Purple, Chartreuse, Red, and Brown. Though there are many more colors that I'm sure work.

subscribed right after i saw you start the thread without clipping any tag end. well played sir.
Haha, thank you, I don't have much to offer the sport but I'm glad I had one technique to offer haha.
Many thanks friend , first class tying and step by step instructions 🎣🎣👌👌
Thank you! I'm glad you liked it.
Great tie, the copper John is an awesome pattern. Thanks for the easy to follow instructions.
You're welcome Larry, and thanks for all the support!
You are certainly good at tying flies and making a video clip on how to do so. Very much appreciated.
Thank you for the kind words!
Well tied, a must have for any fly box!
🎣
Thank you, I completely agree! Never go fishing without at least one in my box.
best copper john i have seen ...i cant ever get those damn wire wraps perfect
Thanks!
Chimo! Great job on the tutorial Skylar. I've been enjoying your great video and calm instruction. I also like the way you start your thread without leaving a tag. It saves you an extra cut and a little less wasted thread.
Thanks! I'm glad you liked it, when I was younger I got tired to cutting that tag on every fly so I just started covering it up, now its just a habit. Tight lines my friend!
Great tie. Always entertaining to watch you in action.
Thanks Abe! I always appreciate hearing from you.
Skyler - One of the best Copper John videos out there. My only request - a materials list either written or spoken as you go. Hook choice, sizes, etc.
I'll definitely consider that going forward. There is a list in the description, but I'll play around with a format that shows it as I tie.
Nice ty!!! Tight lines🐛🐜🕷️!!!!!
You do a wonderful job of tying a difficult fly. Well done!
Thanks Roger!
Thank you very much, I’m just starting to learn how to tie flies and this was very helpful.
Well thank you for the kind words. I'm glad I could help.
Excellent technique. I learned a lot from this video.
Thank you Frank!
Another great fly Skyler. Well tied.
Michael Forbes thanks! Always glad to hear from you!
Thanks Skyler - really good presentation and videography :-)
Thank you!
Excellent presentation, thanks.
Thank you!
Pretty sure this is my favorite nymph.
I love this fly. It's heavy and fun to tie!
Nice tie. I like the attention to the taper and keeping it smooth for good copper wraps. Very Davie McPhail.
Thanks Graham!
Nice job , when I tie a bunch of these I just do as you do with the partridge except don’t strip the feather just pull the fibers back tie in the legs trim them then use the remainder of the feather for more legs I can usually get at least three sets out of a feather . When John brought this fly out it was and still is a game changer . Your version looks great .
Thanks, and that's a great tip! I love fishing this fly and it's still one of my favorites too fish even after almost 20 years.
Great Job I'm going to try this tonight thanks for the vid.
You're welcome, and thank you. Good luck!
Awesome!
Thanks!
Beautiful
Thank you!
I enjoy the way you tie this pattern. I don't use scud back however. I feel like Mottled Thin Skin in natural works great and I also put the mylar under the thin skin. Adds just a touch of shimmer. Another great pattern and tightlines!!
I never considered putting the flash below the thin skin, great tip! I can think of lots of places where a more subtle version would probably fish better. I won't hesitate to put a copper john on at any time, but I really like fishing it during the spring when the water is murky. I find that using that black scud back really makes the flash pop and when visibility is key, it seems to fish better, but I'll have to try it with the flash under the thin skin. Thanks for the kind words, good luck on the water!
I really like that technique for the legs. I've been doing it the hard way and kept thinking "There has to be a better way".
Yeah I had that same realization a few years ago. I love doing it this way now
Perfect👍👍👍
Thanks!
Cool tying video. thanks for share: )
Thank you very much! I love taking my daughter out fishing with me and I love the name you are using on RUclips.
@@skylerhardman1227 my best fishing buddy is my dad, too! :)
Looks good......I approve
Thanks!
Nicely done, on my way to make one good technique👍
Thank you! Good luck!
New fly tyer here. Doing well so far I think bit biots are giving me a real challenge... it's a struggle. Takes longer than the rest of the fly lol
It sure can take a lot of practice that's for sure. My fingers used to get sweaty when I would concentrate too hard making setting biots nearly impossible. Keep practicing, you'll get it!
Beautiful job!! Skyler... What time of the year is this fly productive? Thanx....
Thanks Ken! To be honest it can definitely be fished all year round, but I find it particularly effective in the winter especially on larger rivers. On the south Fork of the Snake we fish it in January up to about a size 10, it drops fast which makes it great for getting into the deeper pools that exist on that river when the water is at winter flows. But my favorite time to fish it is actually in the spring. I like to put it on when the water is off color. Usually flows are high so the extra weight helps to get down fast, and it's flashy so it stands out to the fish when visibility is low.
Great video! I see you reccomend a 2x long hook, but could you let us know what specific hook you use please? Tiemco 5262?
Thanks! This was tied on an Umpqua U103.
Hi, love your fly tying videos. What camera do you film with? Thanks
Thanks! I use a cannon 80D.
Love these videos! Just getting back into tying after years off. Any good recommendations on where to buy materials?
Of course I try to keep it local but I recently moved to a place without a shop and I have been ordering materials from jstockard.com and I've been very happy with them.
Ultimate fly tying they are located in Gateshead but are on Amazon best by far
Enjoyed watching.
You make it seem possible !
Hope you get back to doing more.
Is it useful in low/clear conditions and fished upstream or swung in the current ?
Many thanks Patrick (Ireland)
Hi Patrick! Thanks for the kind words. This fly can be good in low/clear water but I find it works better in murky water or in really fast current when you need to get a fish's attention and get deep fast. In my streams the flash tends to spook fish in slow clear water. If you were to swing it you might try tying a soft hackle version without flash on the wing case. I've also tied several of these without the flash for summer fishing and they will work. The weight and flash makes them ideal for early spring fishing however.
@@skylerhardman1227 Thanks.
Sweet fly
What resin did you use and size?
Thanks
Hi David. The materials list is in the description of the video which will answer your question and hopefully any other questions you have. Let me know if I can help with a ything else!
Nice video question what kind of Epoxy did you used thanks?
Hi Paul, I used loon UV resin thick. I always put a material list in the description of my videos, that should help on any other videos if you have any more questions.
@@skylerhardman1227 Thanks
If I can suggest a change, I would not have stripped the rest of the soft hackle from the stem of the partridge feather (4:40 on the video). There was no need to do so since the stem is not tied in, only the soft hackle (4:54 on video). The remaining soft hackle on the feather could have tied another fly.
I would completely agree with you. Something I omitted from the video because I didn't even think to include it was that typically I use larger or slightly damaged feathers that I wouldn't use for anything else which typically only allows me to use each feather once since the rest of the feather typically isn't usefull. I'll have to make sure that in the future I address this if I use a similar technique. Thank you!
Have you ever tried clear nail polish instead of epoxy? I've heard from a couple old timers it works just as well as the epoxy? What are your thoughts?
It depends on the pattern for me. I use Sally Hansen hard as nails clear polish on a lot of patterns but it takes a long time to dry and it can be hard to build up in a timely manner. It is harder to get the nail polish to dry in a certain shape too as it tends to flatten out. I love to fish a fly called the evil olive and you want a bulging back on that pattern, for that you need UV resin in my opinion. I often will build up a back with resin and then finish it with Sally Hansen for a more durable finish. If you're fishing deep on a gravel bottom the resin will scratch a lot without the Sally Hansen ruining the effect. I also use Sally Hansen for some other purposes. If you stay tuned you should see those patterns come out over the summer.
@@skylerhardman1227 good to know!! Thank you so much!! I'll pick some up
@@warriorgaming5994 Sweet. The best part is the polish is really cheap!
Классный жучок, тоже попробую сделать.
Thanks! Let me know how it goes!
How in the heck do you tie in like that
Haha, which part?
What size hook are you using?
Looks like I need to update my description, sorry about that. It's a size 14.
Can I ask what brand ?
What hook size should I use?
My go to is 14 but They work in both larger and smaller

Cracking fly beautifully executed
You seem to have disappeared.
Hey Matt, I can't seem to find time anymore, I keep trying and failing. I'm not done making videos I just need to get back on the horse. I'm an accountant and between the tax law changes last year and the virus this year I just can't seem to get my head above water. Stay tuned though. I have a huge list of ideas.
