  • The copper John is an extremely versatile pattern. You can tie it in a myriad of colors simply by changing out the color of wire. My favorites are Copper, Amber, Purple, Chartreuse, Red, and Brown. Though there are many more colors that I'm sure work.
    Materials used in the video:
    Hook: size 14 2XL Nymph Hook
    Bead: 2.4mm Tungsten Gold (Yes I really like this fly heavy)
    Lead: .015 Lead wire
    Thread: Danville 70 Denier Flymaster Plus
    Tail: Brown Goose Biots
    Abdomen: Copper Wire ( Size: Brassie)
    Flash: Mirage Tinsel Opal (Size: Medium)
    Wing Case: Black scud Back (Size: 1/8 inch)
    Thorax: Peacock Herl

    Nice job , when I tie a bunch of these I just do as you do with the partridge except don’t strip the feather just pull the fibers back tie in the legs trim them then use the remainder of the feather for more legs I can usually get at least three sets out of a feather . When John brought this fly out it was and still is a game changer . Your version looks great .

    I enjoy the way you tie this pattern. I don't use scud back however. I feel like Mottled Thin Skin in natural works great and I also put the mylar under the thin skin. Adds just a touch of shimmer. Another great pattern and tightlines!!

    • @skylerhardman1227
      @skylerhardman1227  6 лет назад +3

      I never considered putting the flash below the thin skin, great tip! I can think of lots of places where a more subtle version would probably fish better. I won't hesitate to put a copper john on at any time, but I really like fishing it during the spring when the water is murky. I find that using that black scud back really makes the flash pop and when visibility is key, it seems to fish better, but I'll have to try it with the flash under the thin skin. Thanks for the kind words, good luck on the water!

    Beautiful job!! Skyler... What time of the year is this fly productive? Thanx....

    • @skylerhardman1227
      @skylerhardman1227  6 лет назад +1

      Thanks Ken! To be honest it can definitely be fished all year round, but I find it particularly effective in the winter especially on larger rivers. On the south Fork of the Snake we fish it in January up to about a size 10, it drops fast which makes it great for getting into the deeper pools that exist on that river when the water is at winter flows. But my favorite time to fish it is actually in the spring. I like to put it on when the water is off color. Usually flows are high so the extra weight helps to get down fast, and it's flashy so it stands out to the fish when visibility is low.

    Is it useful in low/clear conditions and fished upstream or swung in the current ?
    Many thanks Patrick (Ireland)

    • @skylerhardman1227
      @skylerhardman1227  4 года назад +1

      Hi Patrick! Thanks for the kind words. This fly can be good in low/clear water but I find it works better in murky water or in really fast current when you need to get a fish's attention and get deep fast. In my streams the flash tends to spook fish in slow clear water. If you were to swing it you might try tying a soft hackle version without flash on the wing case. I've also tied several of these without the flash for summer fishing and they will work. The weight and flash makes them ideal for early spring fishing however.

    If I can suggest a change, I would not have stripped the rest of the soft hackle from the stem of the partridge feather (4:40 on the video). There was no need to do so since the stem is not tied in, only the soft hackle (4:54 on video). The remaining soft hackle on the feather could have tied another fly.

    • @skylerhardman1227
      @skylerhardman1227  5 лет назад

      I would completely agree with you. Something I omitted from the video because I didn't even think to include it was that typically I use larger or slightly damaged feathers that I wouldn't use for anything else which typically only allows me to use each feather once since the rest of the feather typically isn't usefull. I'll have to make sure that in the future I address this if I use a similar technique. Thank you!

    Have you ever tried clear nail polish instead of epoxy? I've heard from a couple old timers it works just as well as the epoxy? What are your thoughts?

    • @skylerhardman1227
      @skylerhardman1227  4 года назад +1

      It depends on the pattern for me. I use Sally Hansen hard as nails clear polish on a lot of patterns but it takes a long time to dry and it can be hard to build up in a timely manner. It is harder to get the nail polish to dry in a certain shape too as it tends to flatten out. I love to fish a fly called the evil olive and you want a bulging back on that pattern, for that you need UV resin in my opinion. I often will build up a back with resin and then finish it with Sally Hansen for a more durable finish. If you're fishing deep on a gravel bottom the resin will scratch a lot without the Sally Hansen ruining the effect. I also use Sally Hansen for some other purposes. If you stay tuned you should see those patterns come out over the summer.
