    Just viewed a couple of your videos. Material list provided. Simple tutorial. More of a dry fly fisherman but I acknowledge up to 80% trout diet is subsurface. Looking to introduce scuds and nymphs as I like to fish late fall/winter in the Mid-Atlantic. Subscribed. Will look for more. Thanks.

    You are, after all, the engineer of your hare's ear. Bravo! I just found the *"food wishes"* fly tyer. Subscribed.

    Great idea about the scud back material for the wing case.

    I just started tying. This is the first fly of mine I caught a fish with and it was a monster rainbow!

    Wonderful Hare's Ear Fly, but please share the hook make and size. Deadly awesome!!

      Hey Lorenzo. I'm pretty sure I tied this on the Umpqua U101 size 14. That's my go to for standard nymph hooks.

    Nice video. Besides the tail being a different material to the original, the body being rabbit fur rather than Hares ear and having a thorax cover of black scud back which the original doesn’t have, at least it’s got a gold rib! Besides all of that I’d fish it with confidence as it’s a good looking fly.
    Cheers.

      Haha. I received a request for this exact pattern from a friend who teaches a fly tying class at a local university. It's quite the variation, but it does fish quite well.

    Awesome looking fly! I've never tied before, but i've wanted to for a while and i'm going to buy some materials and give it a shot. I'm sure the trout here in Australia will love it!

      Thanks! Learning to tie is one of the best decisions I've ever made in regards to fishing. There is a ton to learn but it's so rewarding to catch fish on your own fly. Good luck catching those trout! What are the trout like in Australia?

    • @jimmygsadventures3549
      @jimmygsadventures3549 6 лет назад

      The trout here are mainy browns and rainbows, and their average size is about 1-2lbs where I fish. They get much bigger than that in larger rivers. I fish in eastern Victoria in the south part of Aus, it;s a beautiful place to fish. I just bought some materials and have tied a few of your patterns, can't wait to get out and fish now!

    Hi Skyler, I tie my Hare's Ear nymphs the same as you do. I find that many are tied with so much "tail" fibers that the tail looks more like an extended abdomen. "Buggy" is good - like the way you tie you Hare's Ear - again, much of the time it is over-done to the point that the proper silhouette is destroyed and the fly looks like a ball of lint. My fishing buddy likes "very buggy" flies, and often wonders why I am luckier than him when we are fishing the same water with the "same" fly pattern. Like the way you tie your flies. One way we differ is that I prefer a dubbing loop to split thread. I do use the split thread method but only on very small flies or for adding a wisp of a collar. Cheers, Hank

      Thanks Hank, I love to hear that. I also have friends into "really buggy" flies. I like to go sparse because of the silhouette just like you mentioned. I didn't start brushing out the abdomen until a few years ago but after seeing someone else do it I liked it a lot. I think that makes a really big difference in the profile and allows for the fibers to imitate gills and legs without having to build up a "ball of lint" (haha). Tight lines!

    • @hankvana2149
      @hankvana2149 6 лет назад

      Agree with you that tying sparse is important - putting 5 wraps of hackle on a fly that represents a 6 legged insect doesn't make much sense to me. I tie two types of flies... "named patterns" for learning tying techniques (I usually give these away) and my own flies designed to imitate/fish/swim like the forage in my waters. I always tank-test my patterns checking for balance, profile, movement, translucency/opaqueness and color... in that order of precedence. I keep my materials to a minimum, if a material isn't making a positive contribution to a fly then it is not added - the KISS principle for sure. Best example (and favorite fly) is a simple soft hackle: a thin (tight) grey hares ear abdomen (very slightly "buggy" :-) ) with a 2 wraps of partridge as hackle then a small peacock herl thorax. For a tiny bit of flash and weight I put a glass, brass or tungsten bead in between the abdomen and the hackle. A three minute tie and devastating on fish. Snowing like heck here :-( anxiously waiting for open water. Cheers, Hank

      Couldn't agree more. This style I like to drop below a small dry for subtle presentations but when the water is deep or fast, put a tungsten bead on it and it's a killer!

    The Hare's Ear nymph is one of those 'must have' flies in your box. By all means do some variations when tying as it just looks so 'buggy'. It does a good job of imitating mayfly nymphs, caddis larvae and other trout food.

    • @skylerhardman1227
      @skylerhardman1227  2 года назад

      It's one of those first flies you learn and one of the flies you still fish. Learning variations makes it more fun, but the basic concepts of this fly work so well.

      Hey Larry, I apologize for the long break in videos. I got so wrapped in grad school, moving my family twice, and starting a new career. Unfortunately I've let some things slip between the cracks. I'm working on a caddis video I hope to get out next week. I have some fun videos coming after that and I think I could do some euro nymph videos this winter. Nice to hear from you

      I couldn't agree more. I got sick of using the green fish tank net as well. These sienes are great especially since they are white, it makes discovering bugs much more simple.
