Great video thanks. I'm a self taught fly angler with only 3 seasons under my belt and have been wanting to learn as much as I can about tying, and really like the way you explain all the materials and the process step by step.
love the fact how you took time to clarify all those seamingly simple techniques. I probably have the hang of most of them, but would have much sooner with this video! great work!
It is the end of a Materelli Whip Finish Tool that I sharpened into a chisel shape. I just flip the tool around in my hand when I'm down with the whip finish and cut the thread with the chisel. Works great.
Very practical approach. Pheasant tail makes better tail in my opinion. Brilliant way how you used the entire pheasant tail without cutting it for wingcase!
For scissors, I like Anvils for everyday tying, particularly the short straight tipped ones. I also have a pair of Rubis Scissors from Charlie Craven with the tips ground to really fine points for dry fly and midge work and they're awesome. You'll also see me using Terra Tools from Wapsi (gold finish) which I use for a whole variety of things.
As always excellent presentation and tying. Just can't go wrong with the classic. I like that dubbing blend for the HE you use. I will be making up some that for sure. Mike
I have to congrat you for all the work that you do to make fly tying very simple, i'm a beginner fly angler and for now i never caught a trout with a fly and i think that thanks to your tying videos i will catch one soon, again thank you and keep on! A big cheer from Italy, Go Devils! ;)
Very good videos! I would just like to say that I use your videos and your videos only to learn to tie flies. I am amazed at how good they all look on my first attempt. You're definitely my favorite RUclips uploader, period!
To this day, no nymph has produced more trout for me. You can flashback these, you can give them a little CDC collar, you can use red thread and give them a little hot spot, you can use biot for the tail and tie in the pheasant tail casing afterward, you can do all of the above on one fly…you can have several versions of these with maybe two or three other nymphs and be catching trout year round. They’re just so versatile, customizable and easy to tie…even for beginners.
Today I tied 18 of these in 4 colors: natural, olive, dark olive brown and march brown. I substituted the uv glue with normal 5 minute epoxy, which worked well. With additional pearl tinsel it gave a really nice flashback effect.
One of these, although a simplified version with just ribbing, dubbing and a bead gave me my first fish on a fly last week, it was a nice brown trout about 4lbs or 2kg in weight.
The tail feather used in this video is naturally colored (or at least that is what the package indicated) but I do routinely use dyed feathers, particularly dark brown. I too have feathers of birds I've shot that are much lighter in color, almost gray. They also have numerous damaged fibers that somewhat limit their use. I still tie with them because I like the idea of using every bit of the bird, but they do make for less colorful flies.
The dubbing assortment are all custom blends of different colors of rabbits fur, out of the packets you get fly a fly shop and hair cut from different color hare's masks. Actually, this coming week's video shows how I make it along with other dubbing blends.
Nice variation on a classic. I have dozens of natural pheasant tails from birds I shot. They don't look like the "natural" tails you use in your videos. The ones you use are more brown. Are they dyed brown?
This is a great looking pattern. I'm wanting to tie some up. I'm wanting to tie them in a caddis green color with a glossy green bead. Would you recommend this? Or is it too bold of a color? If so then what would you suggest? All the best.
Great Videos. Could you please make a video explaining the basic fly tying tools and gear a beginner would need to get started? If you decide to make the video, could you also provide brief explanations of each tool. PS Where did you get your clear dubbing box? I would like to get one just like it.
I used the same fly but without the wing case in New Zealand, on my second cast into a clear pool near a road bridge I hooked a huge rainbow trout which pulled so hard the line burnt my finger
I'm actually not from NZ, I'm from the UK. I was on holiday and doing some fly fishing, I hooked two big trout both on nymphs, the first was on this hares ear nymph, the second was on a gold head Montana nymph. Unfortunately I lost both fish, the first take was so ferocious, the fish hooked itself and snapped the line almost before I could react. I lost the second fish when my line snagged under a big rock. I'm a relatively accomplished all round angler but I can't claim to be the best. I felt sick with disappointment that time because I lost a really big fish & made the schoolboy error of not keeping my line up out of the water around the snags. NZ is a beautiful country and great fishing to be had no question.
Just a personal preference thing for me as I've never really liked the look of a guard hair tail. Using pheasant tail also speeds the tying process because you are effectively tying in both the tail and the wing case at the same time.
thats some really smart fly tying. just what I was looking for. You always do a great job, thanks again. Is size 14 you go to size or do you prefer smaller?
Dear Tim, forgive me asking what is probably an age old question for you, but can you tell me who makes that bobbin holder you use? I've searched online for something that resembles it, the only thing that came close is a stonfo and I know it isn't that... Great videos, superbly filmed. Many thanks from the UK.
Did you know that a copper wire the same diameter as the no-lead wire weighs more than the lead substitute? The copper is a lot cheaper than the no-lead stuff.
Your one of the best presenters I’ve watched. Videos are clear, visible and cons ice! Very helpful. Thanks
I watch your videos all the time, and have learned to tie many from your tutorials!
You are definitely the king of fly tying in my book
Even as a first time fly tier i was able to perfect this pattern in 5 tries thanks to this video and now I'm tying beautiful hare's ears every night
Nice tip about torque-ing the wire to the back. Works a treat. Thanks!
Great video thanks. I'm a self taught fly angler with only 3 seasons under my belt and have been wanting to learn as much as I can about tying, and really like the way you explain all the materials and the process step by step.
nice to see someone tying these in colors. Heck yes. Thanks
love the fact how you took time to clarify all those seamingly simple techniques.

great work!

This is my absolute favorite nymph to tie and fish!
Very practical approach. Pheasant tail makes better tail in my opinion. Brilliant way how you used the entire pheasant tail without cutting it for wingcase!
You really are the fly tying king
If I had to feed my family, it would be with this pattern and the pheasant tail. Both timeless classics

So much good information in one short video!!
I have to congrat you for all the work that you do to make fly tying very simple, i'm a beginner fly angler and for now i never caught a trout with a fly and i think that thanks to your tying videos i will catch one soon, again thank you and keep on! A big cheer from Italy, Go Devils! ;)
Always been one of my favorites
Works well on the Bow River in southern Alberta. Thanks for the vids!!
My favorite nymph pattern. I hardly fish any other these days.
Very good videos! I would just like to say that I use your videos and your videos only to learn to tie flies. I am amazed at how good they all look on my first attempt. You're definitely my favorite RUclips uploader, period!
I was badly outfished by a friend with a hares ear pattern. this is just what I needed.
Love the pattern
Really high quality video, thanks for sharing.
Awesome video! I was looking for an ulcer active to guard hairs for tails but this gave me a good direction to do in!
Nice fly well dressed.. Keep up the great tutorials!!
Really brilliant video
Superb tying

I really enjoy these, you are one of the only people that i can actually understand and follow when making flies.
Can you do one for a Renegade?
Nice vid, very professionally done.
Works well on the Tongariro River in NZ, Thanks from down-under.
This one was long awaited!
Great job once again. I love fishing this fly pattern.
I use the Ultimate Indexer which is basically a Barracuda with a few extra features. It's a wonderful vise.
Sweet!! Tight lines🐜🐛🕷️!!!!
Great pattern I got my biggest rainbow of the day on a yellow and black one of these using sinking line.
Awesome fly
Great video, very detailed.

Just Excellent!
Please continue!
Always so exact and awesome. Thank you.
Thanks!

awesome tie, thanks for sharing
Great video. You just got a subscribe.
I'll mix synthetics in on occasion, but it is mostly natural stuff and primarily rabbit/hare based.
Really nice.
Classic!
Excellent!
Another great video! Please keep them coming. What scissors do you prefer when tying?
Nice variation on a classic. I have dozens of natural pheasant tails from birds I shot. They don't look like the "natural" tails you use in your videos. The ones you use are more brown. Are they dyed brown?
Thank you, can't wait to see the video. Do you make your own dubbing out of synthetic materials?
This is a great looking pattern. I'm wanting to tie some up. I'm wanting to tie them in a caddis green color with a glossy green bead. Would you recommend this? Or is it too bold of a color? If so then what would you suggest?
All the best.
Could you do a video on tying the Letort cricket
Great Videos. Could you please make a video explaining the basic fly tying tools and gear a beginner would need to get started? If you decide to make the video, could you also provide brief explanations of each tool.
PS
Where did you get your clear dubbing box? I would like to get one just like it.
It must always be acknowledged that this is NOT the original dressing but a variant given the same name.
Think skin for a wing case and flashabou as rib? Some variation ideas...
I used the same fly but without the wing case in New Zealand, on my second cast into a clear pool near a road bridge I hooked a huge rainbow trout which pulled so hard the line burnt my finger
Beesa10 what part of New Zealand are you from I'm in the Hawkes bay
I'm actually not from NZ, I'm from the UK. Imagine how big the fish would have been if you used a hares ear with a wingcase!
Where can I find a dubbin dispenser like the one in the video?
Tightline,
Do you use the dyna king barracuda or the barracuda Jr.?
Nice
The Dai Riki 285 is no longer available. Would a straight eye hook affect anything with this pattern?
Just wondering if you sell any of your flies
Awesome fly, I wanted to ask though, what kind of dubbing assortment was that with all the hares ear?
Just curious but would it be possible to use either rabbit fur from a zonker strip or Orvis fine and dry dubbing for this pattern?
Is that a magnetic tool you use for the beads ? Very nice
dont you have scissors?! :P
Where's a good place to order materials online?
Love your videos! I have several downloaded on my phone. Keep it up, boss!
So when are we getting that video on the custom dubbing mix? It's been quite some time now...
Making a Custom Dubbing Blend
I looked for this on your page and couldn't find it. Thanks! I'm going to watch it now.
Nice tie, what tool is it that you used to cut the thread after the whip finish?
Please watch this video. ruclips.net/video/IIelGE5kJ6M/видео.html
great fly however id like to ask why traditional hares ear guard hair was not used for the tail?
Just a personal preference thing for me as I've never really liked the look of a guard hair tail. Using pheasant tail also speeds the tying process because you are effectively tying in both the tail and the wing case at the same time.
tightlinevideo thanks,i suspect when wet there would be little difference in appearance.
Can you do some rangly maine vids like a grey ghost or something thanks
What do you use to hold your fly at the beginning of each of your videos? Thank you.
What type of fly does this nymph represent? Is it a mayfly?
thats some really smart fly tying. just what I was looking for. You always do a great job, thanks again. Is size 14 you go to size or do you prefer smaller?
Are you the guy from How it's made?
Dear Tim, forgive me asking what is probably an age old question for you, but can you tell me who makes that bobbin holder you use? I've searched online for something that resembles it, the only thing that came close is a stonfo and I know it isn't that...

Ed Perry Rite bobbin
Did you know that a copper wire the same diameter as the no-lead wire weighs more than the lead substitute? The copper is a lot cheaper than the no-lead stuff.
Isnt this more of a pheasant tail nymph? No hares ear for the tail.
Super job
