I live, eat and breathe fly fishing and have for 25+ years! In fact, if I wasn't married, with children and a mortgage, I would live out of the back of my Tacoma and be a trout bum! Yes I've been that annoying dry fly guy, a euro nympher and fishing nothing but wet flies! But for the past 5 years, I've fished nothing but streamers and had a blast! I would not recommend this approach for everyone and in fact after one year of streamer fishing I nearly quit. What I didn't expect was such a steep learning curve, hell I just expected to throw a giant streamer and catch monster fish. Well it doesn't work that way.
So my goal is simply to help you become a better streamer fisherman. I'll share personal favorite flies, I'm not selling any materials, so these are my tried and true patterns, no bull! My set-up from the rod to the fly and most importantly how I fish them!
Follow me on instagram @trouttornado and DM me with questions or leave comments here! I hope you enjoy and learn lots!

A Fishing Knot: Tie Mono or Braid to Bite Tippet
Просмотров 3 тыс.Год назад
When you fish for pike, walleye, bluefish, musky, barracuda- any fish in fresh or salt with teeth... You need bite tippet, or steel leaders to keep from getting bitten off! I am not a fan of using big clunky leaders, and for more than 25 years I've been using the Hesse knot. It's a simple, small, seamless connection between steel, bite tippet, monofilament or braided line! In my humble opinion,...

I grew up fishing spinners and spoons with a zip gun (spin rod) and always loved the flash and action that would draw fish out of nowhere to kill it. The Food Baby is a simple UV resin fly that crushes trout, smallmouth, stripers and panfish! The reason is simple.. big fish eat small fish and the Food Baby imitates them perfectly. Your niece is married to my nephew Adam. I have been subscribed to your channel for some time. Took them out for a Thanksgiving dinner last night and I brought up fly fishing. She mentioned you and I immediately knew your channel. What a small world!
That's awesome! Reach out anytime with questions! Always into helping family!! 💪💪
Its all about strength .How does this compare to the Brian Chan loop knot
All I can tell you is that I've used it for years and never had it fail.
I like your stripping mat. Do you have a how to make it video?
I made that mat based on pure need, it works fantastic. I'll create a how to video. Thanks for the recommendation.
Looking fishe
Yes it is!!
How strong is the knot
Incredibly! Have caught pike, walleye, steelhead and stripers using this knot! Love it!
Really enjoyed your video! My I make a suggestion to lose the background music when you are talking, it's distracting. Your content is great, it doesn't need the over music.
Yeah thanks, I've moved away from the background music. Thanks for the feedback.
Forgive me if these things have already been addressed. This is an outstanding fly pattern. I have no doubt it catches lots of trout and bass. You have thought out the materials and their placement impeccably. Furthermore, I am very happy you shared your knowledge and passion. I have one huge concern. Again, it may have been mentioned previously in the comments but I haven't read them. The two hooks, in my opinion, are waaaaaay too close. I do not understand the reason for the very short hook in the front. It seems to me that either cut one off or make the front one longer. If in your experience it is not an issue than my fears are allayed. But i shutter to think that you are really fu**ing fish up with those hooks being so close together. With respect.
Been fishing these flies for a long time and never effed up a fish. Appreciate the comments and concern but no need. Feel free to modify the pattern as you like.
I've got zonkers 2 1/2 inch long and they float when dry, I fish a sinking line but while I wait on the line sinking I've caught many trout with they big zonkers like big dry flys just floating their or as soon as you start tugging the fly under the surface - bang fish on!
That sounds great, enjoy!
The imagery is what got the love…..double granny
I really had fun making this video! Glad you enjoyed!!
Very well explained and executed. Thank You!!!
I love that knot, I'm sure you will too! Glad I could help!!
Looks very good
Yes, yes it is!
Always enjoy your videos, keep them coming
More to come! 😁
Looks good
Such a great fly!
I'd say the trout love it! Great pattern and it's a staple in my box. Really dig your style of blending all the materials together.
Awesome, thank you!
So you are spey casting these craw patterns?
Yes!
@@TroutTornado have you had much success drifting crawfish patterns in the current? Over been using OPST for years here in Utah and am wanting to experiment with some new techniques.
Ha ! Nice , but ... try to do it with one line more than two times thicker than the other ...
Great! 👍
Nice looking like it
Thank you! Cheers!
hello, a genuine question.. which is better.. just using any mono or a wire?.. and how long will it last when compared the 2?
Mono lasts longer than wire, wire wears a grove and fails... Mono has never failed me and swivels like crazy from day 1 to 1000!!
@@TroutTornado this is my first time trying to tie a flies.. and I'm thinking of using a Cockles Feather for a streamer.. or is there any other type of feather besides a Cockles?
Well done! You’re wearing the difference in Kelly galloup and those other guys- waders. They boat fish. As a wader man I’ve found your video a tad too late. Luckily Amazon took the shovel head back.
Glad you enjoy the video!
Good video, good knot. For the record, though, that's an overhand knot, not a Granny knot. You get a granny knot when you screw up a square knot. But hey, the fish don't care!
I had no idea!! Glad you like it!!
this is an Albright knot. it's been around 50+ years.
Yes it is, thanks for helping me figure it out!
seeing red and.green and the knot in yellow is vert classy !
Glad you like it! It's an awesome knot!
Excellent looking pattern and great tying techniques! Tying some up for an Alaska trip! Thanks for sharing.
There's just something about that wiggle tail and jigging action that drives the fish crazy! Enjoy and good luck in Alaska!
I also hate the blood knot but use a double surgeon's know instead--easy to tie and has never failed me. Don't know why the fly fishing community seems so stuck on the blood knot. The Hesse Knot looks very good as well. I may give it a try.
The Hesse knot is the bomb! Caught serious fish without failure! Try it and you'll be happy!!
Great stuff as always!! This channel has had me on a streamer kick! Mini versions of those classic streamers you see people fishing out west are much more effective here out east, especially in my state (pa)
Yeah, I figured that out and have never looked back! Big fish eat size 22 flies and have no problem eating a mini streamer! Check out the M&M and Microburst I know they work in PA! Enjoy and glad you're enjoying the channel!
Hey man, two questions: 1) how do you hold your rods on your Watermaster? Tie down? Separate rod holder? 2) what’s the story with the stripping basket / flexistripper? Just bought one, I’m stoked!!
I'm still trying to figure out how to manage my rods on the watermaster. Today all I do is put them along my side, and let them hang there. Not the best system. A friend of mine plays around with some Scotty mounts. I'm going to continue to look and try to find something better.
@@TroutTornado Ya I'm trying out the Scotty's as well. Let me know if you develop something you like better!
Knots that have the ends coming out of the ends are not cleaner, if they snag on algae, or weed. That is one of the super powers of the blood knot. Still interesting knot. I am going to tie the 2 in line, and then see which one breaks first. BKs, are great for the heavy stuff, but alternative for the light stuff would be cool.
You can trim the Hesse knot down so there are no tags as well. Wait till you tie it on a 5X, you can actually create a taper with the knot, so good!!
@@TroutTornado I love new knots! There are so many things that make them worthwhile. I use surgeons knots of the fine stuff, I will try this out on the fine stuff and see if I prefer it. Cheers!
I understand you use a constriction knot instead of loops. Do you use that for your sink lines too and if so don’t you use material when changing your sink lines?
Good question. I don't lose any leader material because I use a small barrel swivel at the end of my leader. I tie my tippit onto the barrel swivel. Works like a charm! 😁
And bobs your uncle! Bob klouser
Yeah I wish! He's an amazing fisherman and fly innovator!
Hi. Thanks for the video. Love your patterns and tutorials. What float tube were you using at the start of this video? I'm curious as I'm looking for a tube/ craft that has oars. Thanks
It's a Watermaster, Kodiak... great boat! Let me know if you have other questions.
@TroutTornado awesome thanks for letting me know. Are you happy with it? I've got a float tube but it doesn't have oars so I'm looking at other options. Appreciate your input
I absolutely love it, it's been a game changer for me. Really opened up miles of water and helped with stealth!
Your 3/4 of an inch is so much longer than mine! Good looking fly though!
Math was never my strong suit, better to go long anyway! :) I caught that mistake too and put a note in the video (@15:04) after I measured it and it was 1 3/4"! Enjoy tying it!
Was baffled at first on tying, but awesome pattern & simplistic tying, attaching the rear hook is similar to the Graboid Leech by Jonathan Farmer (OPST) & can if needed be replaced,my area we're only allowed 1 hook & can see it on a 27 mm shank with the rear trailer hook, tight lines 🤙
I understand your initial confusion with the tying process, but I'm glad you found the pattern and tying method to be awesome and simplistic in the end. I love the guys at OPST, it's cool that you noticed similarities to the Graboid Leech pattern, particularly in how the rear hook is attached. That's also why I reference Jerry French in the video, I think he was a disciple of OSPT as well. Your idea of using a 27 mm shank with a rear trailer hook sounds like a sweet modification that will work well! Tight lines to you as well, and I hope your adapted version of this pattern brings you success on the water.
Easy to cast with 5’ + spacing……weed must be legal in your state, eh?
Don't knock it, till you try it! Two flies are better than one!
Awesome content, i will not expend more money in fly fishing , one rig for different fish, nice one ,
Thank you. It's easy to get caught up in a rod for this and that! Really we only need a few to be successful! Diversity in lines is really the key! Good luck!
thanks, was trying to make a contraption with a space heater, ironing board, and other stuff will simply get this and instead lol
This stupid contraption works awesome and makes me laugh every time I use it!
Can i use this set-up for steelhead fishing?
I would not recommend the three-weight for steelhead fishing. I would step up to a four or five weight... Then you'd be all set for steelhead!!
Is this thesame set-up, when you catch that carp?
And what is the specic name of your reel?
No, I use a seven weight 10 ft for the carp.
No, I use a 20-year-old 10 ft 7 weight from Loomis.
Nice
Thanks
How do you like that hmh? Looks a like a killer vise.
Sold my Dyna King so I could get the HMH. So glad I did, can tie anything from a size 22 to a 2/0+! My only complaint is that the jaws of the tip of the vice are a little soft, and have deformed a little bit.
Glad to see you back with the tying videos man! Awesome looking fly!
Thank you, so glad you like them!
Awsome❤
Thanks!
Hey man, getting ready for my first saltwater trip. What's your opinion on necessary casting distance? Quite comfortable double hauling and creating tight loops out to above 70-75 ft, can't go much past there with good consistency. Enough?
You'll have absolutely no troubles with that length of a cast! Enjoy and good luck!! Reach out to me on Instagram if you have other questions.
@@TroutTornado Thank you so much!!!
Glad to see your videos again
Thanks! I only share when I have some new and interesting flies to share! 😃
My fly was down and I caught two strippers😂
Well, that'd be interesting!! 🤣🤣
Back at it and sharing the wealth! Great instructions and fly. Cheers!
Thanks! I only share flies that catch fish!
Thats a nice tie. Question, how do you like that HMH vise? It looks really nice and sturdy.
I'm thinking of buying a new one, something similar to the HMH, any tips? I have an Apex Vise Anvil, but the jaw has already started to jam.
I really like it, overall I'd give it an 8 out of 10. Pro's holds all hook sizes from a 2/0 to a 20! Once you get it clamped down, hooks don't move, great rotation, smooth as silk! Con's you really need to crank down on the hook, and leverage the dial to make it hold (but once you do it's great). Also the jaws aren't 100% immune to damage from hooks... the jaws are ever so slightly damaged from me cranking down on the hooks.
Consecrated forever Granny💓
That's funny, great comment!! 😅😅
Thanks for sharing this bud. Really solid quality video and instruction.
Glad you enjoyed it
Hello everyone, does anyone have a tip on a sample for extra cloudy water? Bian, do you use these for very cloudy water? Well thank you
Black is always a really good color to use in off color water! Good luck!
@@TroutTornado I greet you. Super classic answer, black is already viewed. I use the Fire Tiger wobbler from Rapala for spinning, but the CLN works better here. I tried tying it as a streamer, my colleague was excited, but it doesn't work. Maybe with your new method it will finally change. tied CLN color from Rapala with a red head. An ordinary Red Head can please rainbow trout on a bite, like a summer streamer...
I started tying with steelhead flies and intruders. So much emphasis on supporting materials to give a large profile. I have a hard time having confidence in sparse streamers not just collapsing in the current. What is your take on that?
Think of water as an ingredient in the fly, with water, and sparse materials comes movement and life. Also with less materials comes translucency, so the fly does not look solid against the sky. Remember baitfish are camouflaged so they dont get eaten.
If you’d like to use one of the ends as a tag end is that a problem, and if not or so which end should you use as the tag? Many thanks!
great question, you could use one of the tags and if you did it would be the heavier test..
