André Leon Talley has been a fixture in the world of fashion for so long that it's difficult to imagine a time when he wasn't defining the boundaries of great style. Kate Novack's intimate portrait, The Gospel According to André takes viewers on an emotional journey from André's roots growing up in the segregated Jim Crow South to become one of the most influential tastemakers and fashion curators of our times. Novack's film draws fascinating, heretofore unexplored connections, between the elegance of André's beloved grandmother and the Black Church of his youth and his later iconic, barrier-breaking work at publications like Women's Wear Daily, W and Vogue. Weaving together a wealth of archival footage from the most glamorous moments in fashion history with André's poignant reflections on his life and career, The Gospel According to André is a cinematic monument to one of the most unique figures of 20th Century American culture. Produced by the team who brought viewers The First Monday in May and Page One: Inside The New York Times and featuring commentary from fashion luminaries including Anna Wintour, Marc Jacobs and Tom Ford, The Gospel According to André is an indispensable addition to the growing canon of fashion documentary.

I thought the one thing about the documentary that I felt was lacking was a sense of cultural context. ALT rose to prominence at a time of drastic change in the fashion industry. When Anna Wintour came to Vogue and ushered in an era of (relative) racial equality. When Naomi Campbell arrived on the scene as the most famous black model in the world. When the supermodels became bigger than celebrities and caused a shift in our cultural thinking towards fashion. When designers like Gianni Versace and Yves Saint Laurent were changing the game in terms of diversity and innovation. When the New York club scene was at it's peak and RuPaul was still (basically) an unknown who was part of that world that intertwined with the fashion industry.
All of this was important to why ALT, a bisexual, black male mattered and was a big part in a cultural movement that still has it's traces today. But it felt too personal about ALT, and just his inner circle trying to shed light on who he was as a person, which was important as well, but not enough about how the world around him changed partly because of him.

Wait, what? Are you joking? Maybe it felt personal and about him because it is a documentary ABOUT HIM!!!!

He is bisexual. And what the hell does it matter any way? Does that have ANYTHING to do with the film?

ALT is one of those veterans of their industry types who has always just been there for reasons which have long baffled those around him. By default he enjoys royalty status due to his position at Vogue, but ever since that ended he's had a hard time keeping his place on the throne. With never a line of his own and a hideous physique abhored by the very industry over which he presides, many people secretly believe Talley himself to be the embodiment of all that is wrong with an industry which has long struggled with dangerous forms of sexism, promoting unhealthy, unrealistic expectations of what is beautiful and touting cruel double standards between men and women which profit off of a chronic sickness of low self-image among generations of women all over the world. Many are ready to see him go and are beliving in a better future for an industry in decline.

There's undoubtedly an audience for a movie like this. You're not that audience - who cares.

WTF???!!!! Seriously Christy do you homework before speaking on a topic. Mr. Talley is NOT gay, he is bisexual. He has NEVER, EVER had a sexual relationship with a designer. There was no luck involved with Mr. Talley. It was pure determination and perservance.

Honey - it's ALL about luck. When no one knows who you are or what you can do - it's ALL about luck. When an opening is available at Warhol magazine right when you arrive in NYC - that's ALL about luck. That he was born tall with features that intimidate is ALL total luck.

Fashion designers take themselves and their field of work waaaay too seriously. I am happy for this Andre dude for his success, but there are literally milions of other people, dead and alive, whose lifeworks are more worthy of a documentry.

Yeah I have always thought that the world of high fashion is one of the most unimportant fields there is, yet you'd think by the way they are regarded, they were on the same level as cardiologists.

He broke boundaries and opened doors. There’s a documentary out about Barbie. Why can’t he have one?

If they're worthy of a documentary why hasn't anyone thought enough to make one of them?

    • @ManoloGal

Maybe you should watch the documentary before making that judgement. If you do you will learn that Andre Leon Talley is NOT a fashion designer, he is a fashion editor and broke many barriers.
Lastly, fashion is a serious business. Fashion is art and is a direct reflection on politics, society, etc.
