You are absolutely right, nothing compares! Imagine those same scenes on a crisp winter day with a towering plume of steam condensing in the sky...

My dad was right:"as soon as you set your eyes upon it Susie, you will see what I see, and saw in her when I rode in her cab home from war"--everyday danged near, dad would speak to me of UP8444, as if I already knew her, as he was grabbing his hat and brown Military issue windbreaker jacket and trademark Newsboy Pendleton cap from our hallway coat closet, his reflection, I'd see coming towards me from the other end of the hallway linen closet mirror mounted on the inside of the door, where I'd always be, either brushing my ling hair or later, putting on my makeup, either way, dad telling me of yet another remembrance of him coming home from California to Jefferson Barracks, near Saint Louis, after being overseas in England, loading bombs and ordinance onto bombers during WWII, riding in 844's cab, and brushing his teeth on the cab ladder, then rinsing his brush out in the Johnson burner's blowout rinse, or shaving with his buddies up on the pilot, using their rations given them by the Ladies of North Platte's famous Wartime Canteen, this grateful daughter often heard about, from my sentimental journeye'd friend James A. Harness my beloved dad. When we were about to go see him with 8444, as I knew it then, back in 1971 in Cheyenne's UP railyard parked in front of the old Headquarter's Building standing down, I remember my dad "saluting" the engine, and me and my mom, dad's sister my Aunt Gerri, along for our vacation that summer after my uncle Lewis had passed away that June 27th, dad's Birthday, and my sister when we dropped gim off to go be among giants, the crew of UP8444, together again for oldtimes sake, while we went into Cheyenne's Harling's Little America to shop and hang out while my dad spent time with the crew and the engine, a big dream of his fulfilled that summer day when I was just 14 years old! When we went bsck to pick him up, I will never forget how enormous her driver wheels are and how the "spokes openings" reminded me of "Citrus fruit" something recurring in my dreams! Jumpstart to May 29, 2011, at Kansas City's Union Station awaiting the start of the Station's annual Memorial Day Kansas City Symphony Patriotic Concert and Fireworks Display set in time to their playing of great musical works like John Phillip Sousa' s "March Triumphant" and "Star's And Stripes Forever" and my all-time favorite Peiotr Tchaikovsky's "1812 Overature" played in front of the Station's entrance to thousands of Kansas City fans! I thought I had been hearing a steam engine's whistle, but dismissed it as being nostalgic piped in sound effects for the show, but I kept hearing it grow louder and louder! My daughter Lacey asked me if I wouldn't mind walking over to the Station with her to see about getting us tickets to the ongoing Princess Diana exhibit there for another 2 weeks given we still had 2 hours to kill before showtime, but we couldn't afford the price of admission and vowed to see it before it left in 2 weeks, and were taking silly pictures of me posing in my stupid pink hickory striped engineer cap I put my wedding rhinestone RR track jeweled Tiara across the brim, attached to my 22ft long Tulle train I sewed on a pink Caboose at the end to drag down thecaisle behind me attending the Station's Royal Wedding Watch Party held there a month prior April 29, 2011, attended by thousands of "wedding guests" outfitted in everything from tiaras, paper crowns, ballroom gowns, wedding dresses, jeans and even their PJ's and curlers with cold cream slathered on their faces all gathered under the giant IMAX screen watching the Royal Wedding of Prince William and Cate live broadcast round the world from London and local KC news station from 3am locally till 9am CST live from Union Station on Good Morning America! When my daughter and I went out to take some photographs of me posing with a lifesize posted of Princess Diana just outside the ticketing office on the lower floor, Ed Dickens saw me from the cab of 844 just pulling into the station, my heart stopped when I realized I was seeing my beloved steam engine again, only this time at my beloved Union Station! Ed invited me up in the cab for some photos taken with him and their was nobody else there at the siding, no foamers or concert goers or photographers, justvme and my daughter and the UP Steamcrew, a meet and greet I will always cherish for the rest of my life, as Ed Dickens rekindled and inspired my love of art, music and steam trains, and I honored him with one of my personalized hand drawn customized Caricatures of me "running away with the 844 steamtrain like "I told my dad I would if I ever saw it again" and my husband UP Hostler Tim, pointing up at me holdin on to the cab's side ladder, and gave it to Ed the next day, but my recollection of his first name Ed wasn't clear and I made it out to "Engineer Rick" as my friend foamer Andy had told me wrongly "the new engineers name was "Rick" Steve Lee had retired, so Ed was wronly accused by Moi of being an alias and the friendship started under a new name, only I got it "right" this time and fell in Love all over again with my new 844 given back her original number after the diesel that replaced her in regular service back in 1959 as "UP8444" was retired! I hope to oneday volunteer with the steamcrew and go on their many excursions doing my caricatures at whistlestops or mingling among guest's passengers on board the train or working in their Souvenir Car when 844 or other Heritage trains are on dispkay at longer whistlestops, my place in time my dream fulfilled! I am afterall "Married To The Railroad All The Livelong Day And Night!"--Susan Lary, wife of UP Hostler Tim Lary, Lee's Summit, Missouri and UP844, Big Boy 4014 and 3985 Fan

That view of the crowd at the end told it all.....Just like once a year they should let the full amount of water go over Niagara falls....and turn street lights off so we can see stars.
