    The "Daddy of 'em All" doesn't disappoint, as UP 844 pulls 23 cars on the annual Denver Post sponsored special to the Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo. This is short excerpt of video I shot during Saturday's CFD train and Sunday's positioning move. Nothing compares to mainline steam at speed.

    No other railroad has retained its historical equipment or honored its American roots like Union Pacific.
    "Our steam locomotive program is a source of great pride to Union Pacific employees past and present," said Ed Dickens, senior manager-Heritage Operations. "We are very excited about the opportunity to bring history to life by restoring No. 4014."

    The 2 diesels are used primarily for assistance on the steep grade just south of Cheyenne. They provide dynamic braking on the downhill section and a little bit of pulling power going uphill. 844 can handle this tonnage by herself on relatively flat ground, but not on the steeper 1.2-1.4% grade near Cheyenne.

    I got to climb onto the cab of 840 which was then called 8444 during the River City Roundup in Omaha in '84. My college journalism professor, Joe McCartney, was then the head of PR for the UP. Omaha has always been a big railroad town since the Transcontinental Railroad began across the river in Council Bluffs. It is the HQ for the UP and the home of the guy who owns Burlington Northern.

    She's not the only one! For years #3985, a 4-6-6-4 Challenger locomotive has thrilled UP steam fans. She's having a bit of work done, and might be in the shop for a couple more years, but she'll be pulling stuff out of and back to Cheyenne some day soon.

    Union Pacific plans to relocate No. 4014 to Cheyenne, Wyo., where Union Pacific's Heritage Fleet Operations team will work to restore it to operating condition. Details regarding those efforts will be made public at a later date.
    Union Pacific donated No. 4014 to the historical society December 7, 1961. The locomotive arrived January 8, 1962, at its current display location at the Rail Giants Train Museum in Pomona.

    I doubt 844 or any other FEF-class locomotive ever pulled a passenger train of this length in regular service on this line. I imagine this train would have either been doubleheaded or ran as 2 sections back in the steam days.

      The diesels seen here are not equipped with HEP, so they're incapable of providing power to the cars. That's what the second, third, and twentieth passenger cars in the consist were there for.

      Trust me 844 can do it solo. The 844 and her sisters were designed to haul 1,000 ton passenger trains over 100 mph on level track. However in today's modern world the diesels like the two in this clip are used so the steam crew doesn't have to "work" the 844 which extends the amount of time 844 can spend on the road between shoppings. The diesels also come in handy on steep grades going up and coming down.

    • @Pianoman71213
      @Pianoman71213 8 лет назад +2

      They have always used diesels with the CFD trains. They have a tight schedule with this trip and with 20+ coaches, the engine doesn't accelerate to track speed as quickly as it needs to. Then of course Ed doesn't like to let her work at all. There's a diesel when there only pulling the 4 support cars. Complete Bull****.

    • @Pianoman71213
      @Pianoman71213 8 лет назад +3

      For dynamic braking yes, but for insurance reasons no. They ran without diesel assistance quite often prior to Steve Lee's retirement on the last day of 2010.

    Steam locomotives dont really use horsepower to judge power,more of their tractive effort which the fef-3 exerts around 63,000 pounds at around 45mph ,horsepower wise she exerts roughly 4500-5000.
    She was built to haul 6-8 passenger cars in excess of 110mph. But were used in freight later in their lives.
