There’s multiple operational steam locomotives that used to run on roads now, absorbed by the union pacific, such as the Cotton Belt 819, but the UP won’t touch them
🚆🚄🚅
This is a awesome sight to see. I dont think we have any steam locos as big as those two in this video. I hope they will be restored to running condition like the big boy?
Yes! RHMA Is currently restoring #3985 and #5511 as well as bringing Diesel #6936 back to operational condition
Challenger
I live in Omaha and my son and I love watching trains come in and out of town. The Heritage Yard in Council Bluffs is a special spot but it's not open to the public. Last Winter we saw the CNW F3 that was part of this consist sitting in the Heritage Yard which was neat to see! We just saw Big Boy 4014 for the Home Run Express this year. Love those old UP engines!!
Think of how wildly different the landscape of RRing would look had the Santa Fe-Southern Pacific merger not been undermined by UP.....
Looks too much like a funeral.
Well thankfully, it's not
it is, UP got rid of it and the preservation societies do not have the money to keep 3985 running. Not to mention the other engines and cars. UP has decided to close down the historic department at Cheyenne till 2028. Wait and see.
@@steffenrosmus9177 Then how come they're currently rebuilding said rolling stock in Illinois, AS WE SPEAK?
@@steffenrosmus9177RRHMA has been repairing all of them. Challenger’s safety valves have been sent out to be replaced as of July. So I don’t know what tf you’re talking about, but you’re wrong.
Real Trains!!
The engineers don't wave from the trains anymore, not like they did back in 1954!
Engineers still wave just like they did in 1954😅
In 1990 we watched 3985 pull a double stack up archer hill by itself. In 2022 we watched it get pulled up the hill as dead weight.
One of my fond memories is watching "CHOO CHOO TRAINS" when I was a tot. That was long ago...
Poor 3985. 4014 showed up and everyone forgot she was there!
I still would rather watch the challenger than the big boy any day
@@bobmoyer8569 tbh I prefer 4014, but I feel disloyal about it
She did not get left out just a FRA mandated inspection commonly known as a 1472 day inspection
That train should have been lead by up4014 4884
Some more legends on they way to be restored
History going down the tracks...
If it still has wheels and is on tracks, save it!!!! We've lost too much to the cutting torch already. Glad to see this mechanical history will have a home. Hopefully restoring goes smooth.
6:09 this view is probably what any railway looked like after the cutting was dug bad the track, laid. In the U.K. at his would all have grown over with trees and vegetation but looks like this is a very arid environment ….. amazing video and such power of your incredible locomotives.
I didn't realize that a DDA40X was so much taller than other locomotives
Big Jack 6936 was still operational a few yrs ago. They used it on a revenue train and also had it on display at the CWS
The profits UP has made in past and future they should have restored these engines
Time, workers and money to cover it all.....better to spend the allocations on keeping the current stable up and running.....sort of like tech companies who have 16 engineering programs going (to make venture-vultures think all is going well) when best practices call for only 6.. seen it too many times in my 48 years in the industry....those that overstepped went BK or were absorbed by octopi like CISCO. Andale!
UP is a public corporation and if there is one thing Wall Street is, is it isn't sentimental. It is amazing that the UP even has a steam program to be honest or they restored the big boy. The challenger and the decapod are big efforts, let's hope the recipients can make them run again.
UP used challengers oil tender w big boy bc converting the BBs tender, which is coal, would have taken too long& cost too much to make the 150 anniversary of the Transcontinental railway. The recipient therefore is receiving the BB tender and will convert it to oil.
Pretty sure that's the only remaining B unit E9.
I seriously hope they greased and oiled everything. Metal on metal contact can do a lot of unseen damage that will be more expensive in the long run to repair.
You figure?
Challenger 3985 was my favorite steam loco way before even considering restoring a big boy. Im glad they restored the 4014, but this makes me sick to my stomach.
If it looked as rough as it did in the video, I'm hoping it's going somewhere that it'll be properly preserved.
@@buck45osu Both #3985 and #5511 have been sent to Railroading Heritage of Midwest America's workshop in Silvis, Illinois, and are currently undergoing overhaul back to working order. The group plans to turn the shop, yard, and surrounding 11 miles of track into a heritage line.
She's going to run again, if all goes well. The group they're donating her to in Silvis, Illinois is a heritage organization who wants to run her and 2-10-2 UP 5511 on excursion runs through the Midwest and heartland. They're actually restoring both engines to operation simultaneously, though it's possible 5511 runs first because of its simpler design and reportedly better condition in several aspects (at least from what UP's steam crew has said). We may soon have as many as FOUR of Union Pacific's giants operational at the same time (Big Boy, Challenger, FEF and a TTT)!
Excellent video, Nick! Wow.
It is all about money , so sad ...
Great stuff, Nick!
Here's an old video showing the 3985 topping Archer Hill under her own power with 143 loaded intermodal cars behind her
