In the 90s we watched 3985 and the E-9 diesel streamliners pulling a special passenger excursion run to Southern California. The train manager was Steve Habeck, a fellow operator at the Diablo Canyon nuclear powerplant. We saw Steve when the train stopped at Kelso CA and he was grinning like a kid at Christmas!!!

Sounds like good times. Being a steam locomotive engineer was my dream job as a child. I remember in 5th grade my classmates standing up and telling the class what their fathers did for a living. Many engineers in the group, I remember thinking” there must be a lot of trains”.. lol. I must’ve been born under a rock man. 😅

Donating old steamers and diesel locomotives to RHMA. There they can restore the steamers and diesel locomotives back to operating condition. They arrived 5 days later. Now these old things are being restored.

I don't know why there are so many negative comments about this train. What are the odds these locomotives would still be intact in 2023? What would you expect them to look like? They took 4449 out of a park, and look where it went. This is a very hopeful looking train to me.

Found this information running around -
"3985 AND 5511 are to be taken to Silvis Illinois and the Railroading Heritage of the Midwest shops and both locomotives are to be totally restored and returned to operating condition. Also, DD40X diesel #6936, four UP passenger cars, a UP dining car, a UP Baggage car, a UP caboose, two WP business cars, and the UP business car known as the Stanford, originally the Southern Pacific Sunset. Private donations are to be used to totally restore this treasure trove of equipment and use it in excursion service."
THIS MAKES ME SO HAPPY and I'm sure that every steam locomotive fan will be rejoicing too!

It's a disgrace the UP let the 3985 fall into such a sorry state after all the work they'd done to restore her years ago - this is a very sad sight indeed. I really don't know how any tourist railroad or railroad museum will be able to afford operating these two giants, let alone rebuilding them - it's the same issue that has sidelined the N&W's famed 611 "J" locomotive and their 1218 articulated - they're just too big and expensive to operate unless you're a giant comany that can absorb the expense.

the plan is to get both steamers running again. UP didn't have the budget or operational strength to run the 4014 and the 3985 and DD A40X. From what I've heard, they do this on locomotives put on static display so water doesn't get trapped in the insulation where it can sit and do more serious damage that isn't noticed till it's too far gone. 2:40 that Loco on the right front end reminds me of a demonic skull. Fear would be working in a railway tunnel and seeing this Loco with its front lamp burning a dim orange glow … imagine a straight long section of tunnel and you hear a distance muffled train horn ad. Then the beat of the diesel engine “check check….” In the rails …. And gradually the sound increases, the lamp gets bigger but the lamp, doesn’t light anything except sends a foreboding feeling…. And the railway has been long abandoned…but still this menace is creeping up as you dive for cover into the nearest refuge and your feel the heat of the Loco just feet away as the ghost train of 50 years ago reverberates echoing the long lost train that derailed in the tunnel with all souls ….and yet the last moments echo and echo as the last dying attempt to cry for help…. 😂😂

IMO, the UP3985 is much better looking than 844. Also, the Challengers produce better "stack talk" than Big Boy, although they all do well when applying low rpm grunt. Lots of RUclips footage of 4014 these days, but the engineers are way too enthusiastic with the whistle, robbing listeners of the sound of the engine. When I worked for the UP at East Yards in 1968, there was still a steam-powered heavy wrecker in use by Maintenance of Way. I'll never forget that sound. - Z

Correction, the steam wrecker was maintained and operated by the MP&M department, not MofW. Its been almost 60 years. There was a big wreck out near Bartow that involved some heavy lifting. The old steam powered rig was the biggest UPRR had at East Yards. It sat there idling, breathing like a living beast. unforgettable.

UP is a public corporation and if there is one thing Wall Street is, is it isn't sentimental. It is amazing that the UP even has a steam program to be honest or they restored the big boy. The challenger and the decapod are big efforts, let's hope the recipients can make them run again.
UP used challengers oil tender w big boy bc converting the BBs tender, which is coal, would have taken too long& cost too much to make the 150 anniversary of the Transcontinental railway. The recipient therefore is receiving the BB tender and will convert it to oil.

The group they're donating her to in Silvis, Illinois is a heritage organization who wants to run her and 2-10-2 UP 5511 on excursion runs through the Midwest and heartland. They're actually restoring both engines to operation simultaneously, though it's possible 5511 runs first because of its simpler design and reportedly better condition in several aspects (at least from what UP's steam crew has said).
