      🔥👆☝️
Given your frame of reference of the studio recording now, it's difficult to imagine that, yet, the live in Tokyo recording is amazing not only its production recording for its time, especially, but that it IMO they are all freer and make their sound better than the studio''s - for me, akin to the Voodoo Chile cover by Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble - specifically, Live at the El Mocambo (AKA Elmo) compared to SRV+DT's studio cover track, I'll ssy the same about Queensryche's live in Tokyo version of take hold of the flame (not to be confused with the original music-video which was an overdubbing disaster but the original concert live footage and soundboard mixing for all of the band and especially Tate's classically trained vocal capabilities including stamina. It's worth checking out vocal analysis by vocal coaches to come to appreciate what he's doing not to forget the high harmonizing vocals of the guitarist.
If I recall, Tate is a baritone. So, yeah, his range and the skill of his Bridge through the range was amazing when in his prime.

I think the "Live in Tokyo 1984" version is actually better then the original. It's really quite impressive to think that it's actually better than this version and it was the concerts encore song! Geoff Tate is one of the most underrated vocalists in Rock/Metal music, especially at that time. You would always hear about Freddie Mercury, Bruce Dickenson, Ronnie James Dio, etc. but you would rarely hear Geoff Tate get the accolades that he deserved.

@@paulwhitman3922 Yeah, "Promised Land" was underrated...but I think it was "Hear in the Now Frontier " where they "jumped the shark" and committed the critical mistake that a LOT of bands made in those days. They got away from who they were, they tried to have a "Grunge" sound and I think what a lot of bands don't understand is when you do that trying to pick up fans from a different genre...you don't really gain fans from that genre. What happens is you alienate a lot of your old fans that loved the way you sounded..and the new "grunge" fans didn't jump aboard because you were a Metal band and they would never like your music because you were a Metal band !

The band he's put together does justice to the music. It was so wonderful to hear "Silent Lucidity", "Empire" and other great Queensrÿche songs performed live and sung by the guy who originally sang them. Admittedly, I was disappointed he didn't sing one of their greatest songs -- "Eyes of a Stranger" -- but that just gives me an excuse to go see him again next tour!

Queensryche came together in the early 80's in Washington state, when vocalist Geoff Tate of the local band Myth joined forces w/ guitarist Chris DeGarmo of another local heavy metal band The Mob... Tate was operatically trained as a singer, but not a big fan of heavy metal music (he was more of a rock fan), but he agreed to sing on The Mob's demo if he and DeGarmo could write a good song... That first collaboration was the song 'The Lady wore black'... The 4-song demo was eventually named 'Queensryche' after 1 of the songs 'Queen of the reich' and released independently in 1983 as an EP. The demo was hailed by critics in England and Queensryche was signed to EMI Records (Iron Maiden's record label).
Combining the vocal range of Judas Priest, the complexity of Iron Maiden and the depth of Genesis... Queensryche delivered their first album 'The Warning' in 1984... 'Take hold of the flame' became a fan fave live... but the record was not a commercial success at the time.
Queensryche went futuristic w/ more electronics on the 1986 album 'Rage for order'... But it was their 3rd album... a concept record 'Operation: Mindcrime' that gave the band a platinum record and commercial success worldwide by 1989 as they opened for Metallica that year.
With the 'Empire' album in 1990, Queensryche scored a 3x platinum hit w/ radio-friendly hits like 'Silent Lucidity'... 'Jet City Woman'... 'Anybody listening?'... 'Empire'... 🔥🔥🤘🤘 On the 1991/ '92 tour, the 'Operation: Mindcrime' album was performed in entirety in concert.
Unfortunately, all things come to an end... After the acoustic-heavy album 'Promised Land' (1994) and the 90's grunge-sounding 'Hear in the now frontier' (1997)... guitarist Chris DeGarmo quit the band.
Geoff Tate carried Queensryche forward, but took them in a non-metal direction for years... his outstanding vocals were becoming somewhat worn out w/ age. After creative and business frustrations, Geoff Tate was fired in 2012 after an altercation w/ the other members before a concert... Thankfully, Queensryche found vocalist Todd LaTorre and returned to the heavy metal sound.
Currently, Geoff Tate tours often as a solo act and plays Queensryche songs often.

@@purplekat5864 Yeah, he's one of the greatest ever. It's funny, several of my favorite vocalists were operatically trained, Tate, Halford, Pat Benatar. But Queensryche is criminally underrated altogether. People seldom mention that in an age of tremendous double lead players ( Gillis & Watson of Nightranger, Warren Dimartini & Robin Crosby of Ratt, Phil Colleen and Steve Clarke of Def Leppard, Glenn Tipton & K.K. Downing of Judas Priest, Dave Murray & Adrian Smith of Iron Maiden, I'm sure I'm leaving some out here ) few people ever mention Chris DeGarmo & Michael Wilton who not only were as good as it gets as guitarists but were tremendous writers AND did great high harmonies. As I said earlier...music to me must make me do one of 3 things. Make me move, make me feel or make me think. A decent song does one of the three, a good song does two of the three...a GREAT song does ALL three ! And I think Queensryche accomplished doing all three ( at least IMO ) more than any other band !

I rarely hear anyone pointing out the attributes of Queensryche (as a whole and individually) as well as you did! And I had to check to see if I, myself had written the things you said (☺️) because all the points you made are exactly the way I feel!
I LOVE the songwriting of Chris's melodic harmonies, and Michael's heavier edge. Geoff brings insanely relevant, and thoughtful lyrics. Chris, Michael, and Geoff could all write lyrics. I'm not sure if Eddie did. But TOGETHER they made innovative, fresh music that definitely stands the test of time! What I love too, and as you mentioned, the music MOVES me, musically and lyrically! It makes me FEEL something! It's talking about subject matter other than cars, girls, and partying. I love the powerful deliveries (and softness, when warranted). And I haven't heard anyone put real feeling into the lyrics, like Geoff. And Scott/Eddie!
They are all acclaimed, but not nearly to the degree they deserve. A few vocal coaches have remarked about how the band is SO cohesive, playing what the song needs to be great, not just showing off what they can do with their instrument.
And, surprisingly, my feelings about QR music grows stronger over time instead of fading away.
It's great talking with someone of a like mind, Keith! 😝

And all the other Queensryche albums and songs!

Queensryche came on the scene in the early 80's and they are one of my favorite bands! Geoff Tate in my view is in the top 5 metal singers ever! Check out Eyes Of A Stranger which I believe to be better than Take Hold Of The Flame! I was in high school in 1980-1984 when Lady Wore Black came out and I've been hooked on Queensryche ever since! The albums Operation Mindcrime and The Warning are amazing albums from them! Thank you for your reaction!

You'll get lots of recommendations for their album titled Operation Mindcrime, and rightfully so. But ... I will recommend the album called Rage For Order. That album is like no other I've heard. Songs like Walk In The Shadows, I Dream In Infrared, London, and Screaming In Digital are unsung classics in their catalog.

Saw them 4 times in their prime. Geoff Tate was on a whole other level as a singer. untouchable. you really need to watch the 1984 Tokyo concert to see this band perform. you should check out the live official video of the song " Suite sister mary " Tates duet with Pamela Moore ( also an fantastic singer ) is amazing. The song " Queen of the ryche " shows Geoffs vocal power even more than " Take hold of the flame "

I fronted Metal bands back in the 80's & 90's and the way I always judged music was like this. A "good" song will make you do one of three things...make you move, make you feel, or make you think. Very good songs accomplish two out of three. GREAT songs do ALL three ! And for my money Queensryche had more material that made you do all three than any other band !

RUclips has a live Queensryche concert playlist from 1984, in Japan (there to promote their upcoming 2nd album, 'The Warning' -- 'Take Hold of the Flame' is on that album)...the FULL concert is incredible...and this song is the 2nd to last...despite that, Geoff's vocals are INSANE throughout...
