4:00 Good discussion on the phrase: *The face sends it, the path bends it!* This is how I view it: We must remember that the ball is on the strings for only 3 milliseconds (3 ms). A brief instant. The ball always travels in the direction of wherever the strings are pointing at this instant of contact. *The face (strings) sends it* We see the example in the video. (1) Flat serve down the T. At contact, the strings must be pointing to the T (2) Slice serve down the T. At contact, the strings must be pointing to the T In both of the serves, the strings, at the instant of contact, must point to the same direction. If you took a picture at the instant of contact, the string position would be identical for both serves. Those are the immutable physical laws of the universe, i.e. "the face *sends* it". So what is the difference between the flat serve and slice serve down the T? The difference between the two serves is the swing path, *before* and *after* contact. i.e., " *The swing path bends it* " For the flat T serve, the swing path post-contact is more towards the net center strap. For the slice T serve, the swing path post-contact is more towards the right net pole. To use the boxing analogy. It is like punching someone in the jaw and following thru hard straight ahead versus punching someone in the jaw and following thru more to the side. A flat serve = A hard direct punch. A slice serve = *A glancing blow!*
Now that is an analysis 👏 I love having conversations like this to see where people's heads are at with their understanding. I like the way your brain interpreted what I said in this video
great video. I work with my son so much on serve. the ball toss is the hardest part, you can't hit a flat serve or slice very easy if the toss is at 12 o clock, the toss arm is so key, gotta get the toss in the way of the swing path.. it takes so much work to retrain the tossing arm to get it at 1 o clock ( on the right side of the body, for flat and side spins. 12 oclock good for kicks though
I love these tactics that cater to advanced players.... You can't really do this unless you master all the serves.... Most youtube channels focus on how to do the serves but not on tactics on how to use them effectively.... I'm glad I found this channel.
This is super helpful! Thank you! Do you have a video on how to hit a better flat serve? I lose a lot of consistency when I hit a flat serve, to the extent now that I always put a little spin on it. How do increase pace and consistency on a flat serve? I'm only 5'2" so my trajectory is different than someone taller, but I want to be able to really dial up the offensiveness of my flat serve.
Great video, I like the emphasis on where the ball goes after it hits the court, excellent point. You asked for questions, so I have a couple: 1. How did you get what you are calling your kick serve to curve in the opposite direction of your slice serve? I have a reverse slice serve that does this, but it does not kick. My kick serve is simply an exaggerated top spin serve that bounces up, but generally curves to the left. I am right handed. 2. I serve best on the big points in a game and toward the end of matches and sets. Sometimes, I lose concentration early in games and in matches, and then let my toss get too low so that I hit faults into the net. I am a 4.0 player that was moved up to 4.5 with my serve seen as a strength by most opponents. I seem to have to get behind early to focus, and serve well to get myself out of trouble. This is going to catch up with me at this next level. What can I do to correct this?
Great video and accidentally I hit those body serves and usually my opponents are completely baffled. But here´s my challenge: I did a recording of my serve for the first time and was embarrassed. I almost have no racket drop (but in my mind I was doing that). So which drills would help me do the racket drop (or better let it happen) instead of just holding up my racket? Now I know why I lack speed most of the time yet no one told me that I am doing this. I couldn´t find a video from other coaches so please think about adding it to your bucket list. ;-)
With the slice serve- rotate the shoulder toward the court as your racquet comes through With kick serve- keep your shoulder face side fence through whole motion, the rotate after ball is already gone
@@ironwilltennis my normal grip for all serves is continental. I did try adjusting my grip one bevel ( to my forehand grip) thinking this would square up slightly, the angle without changing anything else. It seemed to help some but thought it was a cheesy solution and discontinued.

Great insight in to the concepts of the game!!!
Thank you for the compliment 😁 I hope the video was helpful
Going to try this top shelf stuff tonight
Let me know how it goes👍
I sharing this video to all my playmates. All them have lousy serve game. Or one dimension serves.
Send it to them, hopefully it will help a little

Sound like fun, I can tackle these
How about also where to hit on the ball itself affecting the direction where the ball goes ?
I can do a serve basics video as well 😁👍
Hi can you make a video how to fix waitres serve ? Thanks a lot
Oooo 1 one the most common issues, sure thing
@@ironwilltennis thank you will 🙏

I will definitely add it to the lost for you 😁
Hello Will
When hitting a spin serve (slice or kick) should I "rotate" shoulder into ball or should It be shoulder or shoulder approach?
With the slice serve- rotate the shoulder toward the court as your racquet comes through
With kick serve- keep your shoulder face side fence through whole motion, the rotate after ball is already gone
Thanks, mate. Great video. What's your name by the way?
Very welcomed 😁 and the name is Will

Thanks Will. I suspected that but gave a slight chance to Iron as well.😊
I’m the culprit with the nasty lefty slice to the ad court. What adjustments can I make to reduce the amount of slice slightly and ad some pace?
First question. What grip are you using 🤔
