    One major top tip for others is use metallic sharpies on the foam as it makes it a lot easier to see than the standard black one (as its normally black on greyish black foam). Sounds simple I know but makes it easier.

      Cool, that's great feedback, I do try to design pieces so that they incorporate a decorative element, as well as mechanical workings- but they kind of have to make sense as to why they would actually be there. Sometimes it's hard to get the right balance.

      A Vicious Vixen yes you can. Once you buy the pattern you can either us photoshop to mirror the image or print it out normally and flip the pattern over (I suggest tracing the pattern on the other side with pen so you remember to use the pen side) if that makes sense

      Using a paint program sounds tedious and looses quality.
      Your print driver may support mirrored printing.
      The full Acrobat program (not the free reader) supports mirrored printing.
      Apparently the free PDF995 tool lets you print to a new pdf that is mirrored. Then print the mirrored copy as normal. That's probably where I'd start if I wanted a mirrored version.

    Hi,
    I'm new to cosplay and i would love to make this armpiece (already bought the pattern).
    But I have one question : Isn't it better to prime the foam before painting it ?
    What difference will it make ?
    Thx

    • @LostWax
      @LostWax  6 лет назад

      Everyone has their own technique. Basically you prime the foam to help fill all the porosity of the foam so that your paint layer goes on better. If you were going to spray paint your foam, you would definitely need to prime it first because spray is so thin. I never prime my foam, or rather I suppose you could say I prime my foam with a layer of paint:) It is just one less thing you need to buy, simplifying the process. I always recommend using artists acrylic paints- they don't need to be crazy expensive, the "Basics" brand works fine. And I give my foam 3 coats. If you prime it, you are still going to need 2 coats of paint anyways. That's what I do , but others do differently and it all works:)

      Samsonite maybe you could paint gears on your walls and use gold brown black and gold colors. And for your bed you could use those same colors with swirls and stuff or find a steampunk bed set online.and if you want anything else(a desk ext. ) that is weirdly colored like pink in a dark room you could paint it to match it with your room.

    Great tutorial! Very clear and easy to follow steps to really help beginners like me, great job. Quick question, how thick is the eva foam you are using? The one I use is pretty thick so I'm concerned it wont bend as easily and don't want to waste foam committing just yet. Thanks in advanced!

    • @LostWax
      @LostWax  7 лет назад

      The foam I use in this is 5-6mm (depending if you measure to the top of the bumps or the bottom) It comes in a big roll that's enough to make many products. I have an example of what I am talking about on my product page here: www.lostwaxoz.com/product-links/

    • @LostWax
      @LostWax  7 лет назад

      Yep, I used 6mm, though it's a bit hard to measure the thickness properly because of the pattern on one side of the foam. So to be more specific, 6mm would be the measurement of the foam not including the cross hatch pattern. So if you included the cross hatch pattern, that would add another mm

    I just have one question however: I've seen a lot of people use a heat gun to bend shapes when they work with foam, but you manage to do great pieces without it. Have you ever worked with a heat gun? If yes, is it then easier to work without it?

    Is there any particular reason for not using Barge cement? That stuff holds so much better than hot glue. Great tutorial!

    • @LostWax
      @LostWax  7 лет назад

      I agree, Barge is the strongest thing out there, however, the fumes are not something you want to breathe, and as I cannot control how well people ventilate their spaces, and there are lots of kids making my patterns, I would rather recommend supplies that are less toxic if I can. I have actually been very surprised at how well hot glue actually works once you get used to the techniques. I think I actually prefer it over contact cement now. The other great thing is that if you want to change something, you can use your glue gun or a heat gun to reheat the section and take it apart.

    • @argophontes
      @argophontes 7 лет назад

      That seems a perfectly reasonable explanation! I tend to do all my gluing outside because of exactly that. Great job on the video!

      I usually set mine with the little arrow pointed straight up- so that's halfway between either end. It will also depend a lot on the glue sticks you are using though. It might be worth trying a couple brands.

    I am absolutely in love with your channel and I have been watching it for literally years. I had one particular question though.
    May I ask why you don't use something like barge contact cement as your heated? It just seems as though it would be a bit more thermally stable.
    By which I mean, the odds of the pieces delaminating at say, a hot convention or less likely.
    I also do a lot of work with foam and I was just curious! Not a criticism by any means! Just a curious fan.

    • @LostWax
      @LostWax  7 лет назад +3

      Yep, that's a good question. There's actually a couple of reasons.
      -As much as possible I like to use materials that are easily sourced by the average crafter- most have glue guns, not so many would have access to a good quality contact cement.
      -Barge is pretty toxic, after having a child with cancer, and doing most of my work in enclosed spaces, I prefer to reduce my exposure and hesitate to recommend something like that, knowing most people will not have proper fresh airflow.
      -It's really easy to fix mistakes with hot glue- just heat it up, pull it apart, and try again
      -I have actually been really impressed with the ease of use, and the strength of hot glue when done properly. I left one of my pieces in a hot car the other day (probably around 30 degrees Celsius outside) I tried to pull it apart when I took it out of the car, and the glue was still not warm enough to soften.
      All that being said, If I was making foam pieces professionally, I would likely use contact cement, but even then, there would be times I would choose to substitute hot glue.
      Oh, and I like to try things that everyone says aren't possible. That's where some of the best ideas come from:)

    Also do you have an episode talking about how you make patterns, and if not can you?

      I would like to do something like that sometime. It's just a bit tricky as a lot of it is trial and error. But there definitely are some techniques that would be helpful for people.

      It really helps if you have a finely pointed blade like the one I use in the video. It's a #11 scalpel.

    Hey Chris one more question about the foam:
    What do you suggest for the 5-7mm foam?
    24 square feet roll
    24 square feet mat
    12 square feet roll
    12 square feet mat?
    THANKS!

    • @LostWax
      @LostWax  6 лет назад

      Depends how many arms you want to make:) 12 square feet should easily do one arm

    I bet it'd look even better if you make-uped the inner part of your elbow to be black.
    also you could wear a black glove under it to make it fully machine-looking

      Most of my patters are for sale, I have a couple of free ones though. You can find the links in the video description. I print the patterns with Preview(Mac) or adobe reader- Mac or PC.

    I have a question as far as sizing goes, I have tried the upper arm part on my son. It goes on but it is some what snug. I’m afraid if I size up to medium it will be too big. Is this intends to fit snug.

    • @LostWax
      @LostWax  Год назад

      It's a bit up to you how you prefer that it fits, but I think it's fine if it's a little loose. Especially if he's going to wear it over any extra clothing it would probably be worth going up a size.

    Am I wrong, or are the elbow pivot holes the incorrect size on pieces #1, #5 and #6. I cut them as stated at 8mm but your video states to use 11 mm / 7/8" tubing, which can be stuffed through but it's very tight. Seems to me the pattern should state 11mm holes.

    • @LostWax
      @LostWax  6 лет назад

      Yep, you want the fit of the tubing to be quite tight. THe reason is that the foam will stretch a bit. If you used 11m holes for 11mm tube, there would be a good chance of the rivet popping out.

    I have a question. So, I'm a new purchaser of the complete set of patterns (best decision ever) and I recently bought the yoga mat that you have listed on your supplies list to make this. However, after cutting everything out, I'm realizing that the mat is about 9mm thick, and I'm worried that it's going to be too bulky. Anyone have any suggestions?

    • @LostWax
      @LostWax  6 лет назад

      Hmmm, it might be a little thick, but it could still work- it will end up a smaller size though because of the extra foam thickness. I am just wondering which mat you bought? If you could send me the link, I would like to check it out. You can email me at lostwaxozcontact@gmail.com
