Hey everyone, just thought I would mention that I no longer use Rub N Buff as my preferred metallic paint, you can check out my current favourite paints and supplies on my Amazon page (affiliate link) www.amazon.com/shop/lostwax
This is MAGNIFICENT. I have been searching EVERYWHERE for a top hat with a large brim, to no avail. So, now I can just get out my yoga mat, cut it up, glue it and spray paint and make my own. THANKYOU SO MUCH for sharing, I LOVE HATZ. Everyone loves hatz!!!
just ordered this, and completed a hat the same night, it came out great.. had an issue with my printer and Chris helped me through figuring out what the issue was. instant reply to help me. you couldn't ask for a better pattern and tutorial.. not to mention customer service... awesome awesome great products..great guy... ty Lost Wax
YOU ARE A LIFE SAVER!!! My daughter is having a theme party and this is just in time to keep from strangling her over hats! Gonna be buying that download too. You're a Godsend.
*Prompt delivery with great packaging **enjoyable.fishing** recommend it’s the hat is just as described with the fit being perfect. Really going to enjoy using my hat.*
Time/headache saving tip: I had a heckuva time using the epoxy. It was curing too quickly and my rivets were coming out stringy and not at all like I'd hoped. I used Ranger's glossy accents, which dries clear and has a needle tip bottle for dispensing. It worked amazingly well, and very quick. It's a fantastic adhesive for dimensional elements as well. You can purchase it at any scrapbook store or at Michaels and it goes a long way.
The curry was excellent! I wouldn't use hot glue, I think you will end up having a hard time getting even dots, not to mention all the stringy bits you get with using a hot glue gun.... but you can always try on some scrap and see how it goes.
Rub N Buff is a metallic wax paste, made by AMACO,the consistency is kind of like thick acrylic paints or something like that. You can do a dry brush technique with it, I tend to prefer using my fingers with just a very tiny amount on it for most things if I want to just colour the highlights.
Dude!!!! How are you not breaking a Million Subs!!! This is the coolest channel ever! Totally subbed buddy! Working on a steam punk gun like no other for my next video! Excited to try what I have learned here! Ty man!
Here's a response to Lou M, Unfortunately I can't respond directly to your question, in order to allow me to respond, go to Google plus settings, open Google account settings, Where it says "who can click on your public posts" change it to "anyone" That would be awesome! As far as sizes, the pattern comes with 9 sizes from 41cm to 63 cm head diameters. I haven't had anyone yet tell me that there wasn't a size that fit them, so you should be alright.
+Jacky Fly I did that and it looked great. I used matte black acrylic spray paint (do it outside ;) later on I went on and added the "plates". It looks awesome!
Definitely! As long as it is made of smooth foam. Also not the kind of foam that fills up with water when you get it wet. That would be very frustrating to work with. but maybe nice to sleep on.....
Looks better up close where you can see the rivets; from a distance it looks a little messy. This is probably because the hat looks the same on all sides. Perhaps one might pick up a few plastic cogs or other steampunk-style objects, paint them in bronze/gold paint, and affix them to the hat? It would break up the monotony of the hat's appearance, and add some extra flair.
I LOVE Lost Wax! Fun tutorials & the top hat pattern is the best I've ever found. I even plan to make it out of leather, it's so great. Thank you, LW!!! You're awesome!
Just done with my hat! I'm pretty satisfied I must say. Finished it with 3 different colors of rub'n'buf (Inka Gold) - first with copper, then highlight with some gold and lastly just a few touches of silver on the edges :) Have a picture on my onedrive for those who would like to see -> 1drv.ms/1RMaizd

Thanks for the video. I just finished mine today and LOVE IT. I used a cheap pre-made top hat from Amazon and covered that and it turned out perfect. Will look great with my kids costume.
I love your DIY's I just downloaded all 3 steampunk items you have available, the top hat, the googles, and the aviator hat. I love the little antics you add to your videos and the simple and easy to follow directions. I can't wait to build these. I plan on checking out your other DIY's in the next few days. Thank you for posting such wonderful video's.
I appreciate your tutorial. Using foam had not crossed my mind as I thought of ideas how to make a hat. The contact cement was great too for quick grab application and minimal sticky fingers. However, I wanted to add an additional warning with the contact cement & foam. It might be a good idea to use a respirator. Even outside, I almost injured myself. There must have been a chemical reaction between the foam & contact cement. Noxious fumes started eminating from the hat that could be smelled 4 ft away. Aired it outside for 3 days in the rain. The fumes finally ceased and I was able to continue the process. The hat turned out great!!
Yes!! Definitely wear a respirator. This was one of my first videos and not long after that I switched to using hot glue for that very reason. Good reminder to update the description with a warning, thanks!!
Thank You So Much ! LOVE YOUR CHANNEL! Just wanted to ask I couldn't find that metallic paint so got silver acrylic would it work fine that way you rubbed it with your fingers?

Thank you for the video. I have been looking for a top hat for a while but none at the stores really fit me how I want. I never even considered making one this way.

Thanks for the tip, I'll have to check that out. Some people really like the epoxy, but others hate it, so it's good to have options.
This was a fun project. I liked it so much, I've created the mini top hats and the aviators ones too. Thanks for the video and pattern help!
Oh wow, once rub-n-buff went on that thing the rivets made so much sense. Beautiful. Make moar things. **off to buy a yoga mat**
The curry was excellent! I wouldn't use hot glue, I think you will end up having a hard time getting even dots, not to mention all the stringy bits you get with using a hot glue gun.... but you can always try on some scrap and see how it goes.

Yours looks interestingly hefty, and I really like the look of the metal plates. Good job. :)
Wow, that turned out neat. are the goggles removable?
RoseKindred They are.
Paul Ciura Cool. I've seen alot where they were attached, and it caved the hat in somewhat, yours held up well in the picture so i was unsure.
Thanks Ken! Rin says Hi to you too.
Woah oh oha oh , Mona Lisa
I plan on doing this for a cosplay that requires a top hat, but without the random patches. Easiest tutorial I've seen! :D
