We were totally spoiled for choice in 2010 when this came out which is why it got quite a bit negative feedback but when you play it today and compare it to shite they shovel at us for £50+ it's just way better. Just listen to what games released in 2010 compared to 2024, we got RDR, Starcraft II, Mass Effect 2, God of War III, Halo Reach, AC, Civ V to name but a few.
Back when games were good and movies. I picked this AVP on a discount for like 2 quid off steam. You can get the upgraded version which I did. Still as excellent as it always was, been going through some of the old retro games. I managed to get the game Outlaws one of the lucasarts games when they were decent too. If you go back to play the retro games and how they used to be you will never be disappointed, and neither will your pockets.
Please review those gold old classics
I have AvP2 up and running in Win10. She was a bit finickety. I think there's a few good guides out there. Oddly AVP3 refused to run last time i tried, have it on steam.
Broketober and you are reviewing a 15 year old game. Just goes to show the absolute state of the gaming industry!
I do miss the classic games more they are more creative. Still think 2023 was one of the best years for games releases.
Man multiplayer in this was beyond awesome.
In the basic gamemode we had all 3 factions duking it out.
Marines sticking to each other and constantly shitting bricks since they all were ranged glass cannons, dying to a heavy-light combo that often came from a ceiling (flexing on xenos with a buttstock to the face interrupt into light attack block and knocking on its nogging again to drop the alien on the ground gave an indescribable feeling). Plus, the vision difference from the campaign is carried over, humans cant see in the dark, xenomorphs dont care and predators have their visor modes. That made the MP the only FPS deathmatch survival horror i have ever seen, at least when playing as the marine.
xenomorphs scuttering around on ceilings at mach speeds and lunging at your face.
Predators sniping everything that moved from stealth with occasional dueling with xenomorphs.
All of it happening organically while accompanied by a great soundscape of distant real struggles.
Im still getting phantom buttclenching when remembering it. (marine main here)
True was great as i remember for online and was balanced well i think as as humans you had to stick together so if you had good group humans could win easy while the others 2 were really fun trying to scare and brake the humans up to pick them off god was good back then to what we have now.
Yeah unfortunately not many played the humans in deathmatch when I was on. Everyone just picked pred and a few aliens. The best mode was the infestation where it starts off with 1 alien vs a squad of marines, really intense stuff
i loved this game. those were the days you could blind buy aaa games. no bs agendas, games were made for the target audience that actually bought them.
I recall it being pretty mediocre compared to the original, which kind of shows how crap things have become given it's seen as amazing compared to the shite we have now.
@@TalesOfWar yeah it was considered a budget title when it came out. i think it was only 40 bucks. lol
@@TalesOfWar It felt a lot heavier than the PC versions which were admittedly better but this game for sure has its place as a top tier entry into the AVP series and gaming as a whole. It strayed a bit from the OGs but it also built its own thing and it was rather respectable, the main killer of the game was the dreaded X to instant kill, I feel like that's what largely killed the multiplayer with Aliens just turbo running past you with high sensitivity while mashing X.
The multiplayer is good with the honour rule of little to no cheese executions, the executions look PHENOMENAL though and shocked me with their brutality despite being a big fan of Gears of War 1 and 2 which were seriously brutal themselves. I was stunned when in the Predator campaign I killed the first dude and heavy attacked the other, grabbed him and stabbed him in the stomach, caressed his face then ribbed this spinal cord and head out through his stomach... I've never seen anything like that before.
Heard of aliens, colonial marines?
Got ripped off hard with that one
If this game was released in 2024 the anti-woke morons would be crying about the final cutscene of the marine campaign which reveals your character is black... "waaah forced diversity" lmao.
Memories...buying a full game with no content held back for "DLC", game works day 1, no shop attached to the game.
for a 14 year old game...... graphics hold up pretty well!
Artistic sense will always trump higher polygon & pixels count.
Also, the game was like almost the first game to really use direct ex.Eleven
@kentown8115 yes. One of the first that I remember.
I have a very unfortunate memory attached to this game. I was playing the demo of it on the 360 the morning my brother died in a car accident. Treasure your loved ones, friends, and try your hardest to never take them for granted.
Sorry my friend. 🙏
So sorry for your loss 🫶
F
Ah man, rest in peace to your Brother mate, sorry to hear that.
Why do people feel it’s appropriate to bring up the deaths of their family members to strangers on youtube?
Incredible how well this game aged, especially with the character models. The people in this 14 year old middleware game somehow look more alive than the ones in Slopwars:Outhouse.
Brings me back! Watching you and Mesh work through this game made me fall in love with you guys. I had genuine joy when I would see a new upload. The original lets players, the first to do it! You definitely deserve much more recognition for what you started. Keep doing you Mack, love from an og fan.
The online in this was a good laugh back in the day.
It's still a good laugh today. Just gotta watch out for hackers.
The 3 team nultiplayer is so fun man. I'm shocked this has been rarely done in modern gaming.
Wasn't that the game with one button press finishers? It was so stupid. Someone finishes you and another one stands behind that player waiting to press a button...that ruined it for me.
@@kageshimunamae Yeah that was the worst part, like a congo line of finishers. Devs really should have disabled that for multiplayer.
2010 was a good year
It was an amazing year, RDR, SCII, ME II :)
@@WorthABuyreviews BioShock 2, AC: Brotherhood, Black Ops, Just Cause 2, Metro 2033, New Vegas, Halo Reach, Mafia II, Force Unleashed, Fable III, Dead Rising 2, Skate 3.
Damn. Compared to what now? I haven't bought a single new triple A game in two years.
@@FordHoardHopefully Stalker 2 coming out later this month will change your mind. 2023 was a great year for games though
Top 5 gaming year of all time
The original 2000s AvP games blow the 2010 one out of the water though.
I didn't touch this one as it looked like a cheap reboot.
Never had the chance to play the originals, why were they better?
@@juauke Nostalgia googles. Very thick rose-tinted nostalgia goggles. Don't get me wrong, they were great for their day, but haven't aged well. The marine campaign from AvP2 is still decent I suppose, but that's about it.
Aliens vs Predator (1999) and Aliens vs Predator 2 (2001) and yes by a mile.
agreed, 2010 was very mediocre in comparison
This was one of those great games in 2010. It's interesting comparing gaming today to back then, where AVP was over shadowed by just how many great games were coming out each year.
I have been playing a lot of older games lately, some of them hold up really well. Played through Vampire masquerade: bloodlines and the stalker franchise. Max Payne, FEAR, and Bioshock are also always great to revisit.
It's honestly so refreshing going back and playing old games you have beaten or just playing for the first time, you truly do notice when games were made with passion and no other motive then just giving the player a good experience. Thankfully the indie devs these days are really where this mentality is present.
Aliens vs. Predator (2010) was such a classic . I still put it up as one of my favorite games of all time to this day
I remember this game, it was great. Each faction had its own feeling - the marine missions were a horror game, the predator missions made you feel very powerful sneaking around invisible and armed to the teeth, as the alien you were very fast, but only with melee attacks.
I remember playing the original Alien Vs Predator 2 on a friend's PC back in 2002 and being awe-struck at how all the cutscenes were in-game. He also had a surround sound, so listening to heartbeats and the predator's roar as he cut someone's head off was an experience. Good times that are never coming back.
Damn... to this day the sound of the Motion Tracker still gives me goose bumps, i love old alien games.
Yup, even in his gameplay I was getting nervous!
This is one of my favorite games of all time! The xeno player wall running mechanics in this game are INCREDIBLE. The PVP was so awesome and the campaign was great too. This was a great game man. Very refreshing to see you enjoy this Mack
The 1999 Aliens vs Predator, is one of my favorite games ever. The atmosphere, the gameplay switching between Marine, Alien and Predator, the awesome gunplay. The only game i used to get leg cramps playing, with how tense I was, and how many jump scares it had. Nothing like the feeling of that beeping sound of the alien detector in near darkness! Never played this 2010 game.
Back when I first played this game, I started off playing as Predator, Alien & then the Marines campaign.
It's great to see you review classic retro games. I lost heart with the state of games today and keep revisiting my classic 2010's games list on steam. I miss great games too .
You must be psychic Mack. Everytime I go to play an older game like this, Deus Ex Human Revolution, and Far Cry 2, I would end up finding a retro review from you uploaded around the same time 😂. Cheers Mack
a game that i played as a kid being called retro makes me feel ancient, thanks mack lol
I'd love to see more retro reviews on WAB. Retro and indie are killing triple a.
More like AAA is killing AAA...
It is honestly incredible how shit AAA has become
I thought AAAA was killing AAA lmao
That clip of you waiting as the motion tracker increased in volume was terrifying!
This "retro review" idea is really great, especially when its coming from you with your style.
The 2001 AVP2 was the first muliplayer game I ever played alot of. Absolutley loved that game and still do. Nothing like the destinct different classes going head to head in some epic big battle muliplayer mayhem.
And a honorable mention to the pathing in this. Specially the Alien in all 3 dimensions and the transition between them! Very, very well done.
Now? I thought it was a video from 8 years ago. I'm very happy to see you cover old gems.
They should remaster these classics.
I love when Mac does a retro game review. Reminds me of a time when games were made with gamers in mind.
We need a WorthABuy livestream meetup in AvP!
Still have my copy on the 360! Multiplayer was so fun, remember camping in a dark room with buddies as marines while aliens were crawling on the walls/ceiling. The only thing that killed me with multiplaer was the trophy kills but other than that so damn fun and immersive.
the marine campagne one was pure horror :D
the alien more stealth and the pred was a mix of stealth and action.
loved it
Remember playing the hell out of this, loved playing as the alien the most. The multiplayer infestation gamemode was the best. Deathmatches were fun if a bit unbalanced if a pred knew where to pick up all his weapons.
They need to either remaster or remake this game, the multiplayer was on another level. One of my favs.
It's just an absolute masterpiece why oh why haven't we got a remake/remaster
This was the remake lol.
It didn't sell as well as it was supposed to. Some of the melee mechanics are janky. The insta trophy kills in online almost killed off online play, it was so annoying. The devs should have added an option to disable trophy kills from behind, only allowing frontal trophy kills and you can only use them when your enemy is on his last bar of health.
Just play Isolation, it's amazing.
@@XpRnz You can't be a predator or a marine or an alien in Isolation.
@@mkultra2456 True true, still a great Alien experience though. Would be awesome if it had a Marine campaign!
One of the few games, that I finished on the highest difficulty, that marine campaign was so so so hard.
What I wouldn't give to go back to the time (or change our current trajectory) where games like this were the norm.
This game has been installed on every machine ive had since its release. The visceral, intimate, violent first person action is unmatched by anything thats come after it. First person melee is SO hard to gsr right and this series nails it.
Don't relax just yet marines...
2010 was the BEST year for gaming!
I loved the online portion of this... I became almost invincible as the alien.
Damn, I think I did the marine campaign on this 30 times as a kid. Was one of the best games at the time for me. The atmosphere was so immersive.
Ah, the nostalgia hits hard with this one.
I remember having this when I was little. Somehow scratched it and it’d crash at a certain point in the predator campaign so I just kept repeatedly playing the same missions until I got to the specific point it crashed at lol
AVP2, thanks for the reminder. I had the most fun PvP playing that game. Some straight out horror movie scenes. Loved playing the Aliens crawling up walls and hiding in vents. Two Marines walk down a dark tunnel. one turns around: "Wait, there was something." [pounce.] He turns back. His mate is there no more and the tunnel is silent again ...
There was also mode where the Marines had to defend a fortified position, while the Aliens had multiple lives relentlessly pushing from all sides.
My friends and I over on xbox 360, we'd do this trick where we'd host a predator hunt lobby, and wait for people to join up before launching. It wasn't hard to fill up the lobby back then. Because the game mode was predator hunt everyone would have their species set to human automatically. For those who dont know predator hunt is a mode where one player at random would be "infected" and turn into a predator, and the goal was to kill and "infect" other humans until the predators overtook the lobby.
Anyway, when the lobby was full of players we'd switch the mode to species team deathmatch, switch to predators and launch, we'd do this incredibly fast so other players couldn't react most of the time. So we'd have a team of Yautja vs a team of humans and no FUCKING ALIENS to have to deal with. We were such little shits lol, fun times.
Never had a chance to play this one! Love to see the retro reviews Mack, proper games.
AvP 1999 as the Marine was one of the scariest games I've ever played. Pure terror. I remember not being so impressed by this sequel.
Man this and AVP2 were such good games. I played a lot of MP and LAN with friends on AVP2. I loved playing marines and (sometimes) abusing the autogun
The multiplayer is very much still active.. every now and then i search the dedicated internet lobbies for players and sometimes i get in matches :]
I am the same age as you Mack...and my surname is Mack.I remember all these games and agree with how things have become.
Would love to see some of the older, good Call of Duty games for retro reviews, such as the first two Black Ops games, World at War, or the original Modern Warfare trilogy. Those games were legitimately good.
A timely video. I've recently made a list on my steam account titled 'You started 'em, you finish 'em'. This is there.
One of the few games I have still installed on my PC
Please keep doing Retro Reviews Mack! I love hearing what you have to say about classic games.
Some ideas for future ones: GTA Vice City , Oblivion/Morrowind. Keep up the great work!
I second that!
Although I doubt we will see any rpgs on this channel...
I remember playing this game when it came out was so good and loved the 3 different story's to it with each one for me the alien was best fun running up walls and stealthing it trying not to raise the alarm and the soldiers story was difficult i remember at times when you locked in dark room and only have flashlight and your radar with 5 to 6 dots beeping was tense. I cant remember much on predator story line must not been as good for me if i cant remember it from memory but i do remember online was fun and can be scary at times as vents with aliens can be anywhere and predator invisible on tress anywhere was good i remember.
This kind of makes me want to play it again will have to see as god was games good back then not like now i think most old games if they came out today would get a high score when they got low ones back then just because we have so much slop and failed games coming out one after the other.
Each time i hear that scanner sound my heartbeat go up by 10-20.
Maybe it due to my dad rented the first movie when i was 8 and it was just pure horror for me to watch.
Ah man there are so many games id like you to review from back then.
Great game. Another great game was Splinter Cell Conviction. That “scene” with DJ Shadow in the background was brilliant. Stuff you’ll never see from Ubisoft ever again
Since PC cases have ditched the dvd/bluray slot. I bought a pretty cheap enclosure and put my Bluray writer into it, connected by usb and it plays them fine. You way want to try that to keep access to older games on discs.
Sprinting backwards trying to shoot in every possible direction. Scary, scary awesomeness. A friend liked to play on easy mode as a predator. - not so scary, just cool
It's not just this game, I played my PS3 recently after about a decade and nearly shed a tear. Games used to be incredible.
I remember feeling really disoriented and kinda motion sick during the alien missions back in the day. Super fast transitions from sprinting wall to ceiling to wall.
Ahh this game brings me back.
Use to play it in MP on PC, it was pretty fun for what it was and it was one of the best games in terms of giving you that creepy vibe that you are getting stalked and hunted(expecially when playing marine).
I recently played it on my ps3 and I even told some of my younger gamer friends how an old ass ps3 from 2007 with 500gb worth of classic games from that era, to me is worth far more than a ps4/5 with every single game for those platforms...
PS:I also played through space marine 1 on the ps3 right before getting into SM2 on PC ,I noticed that SM1 is just so much faster and the melee combat and violence is just so much more over the top that SM2(and the SM2 violence is pretty over the top, it's just that SM1 was that epic!)
More retro reviews please Mack! We need to remember what good games were like.
REALLY fun going back to old games. I recently played Wolfenstein 2009 - and I remember everyone hating the game back then, myself most likely too. But man was it fun, especially when the game gives you experimental weapons. SHOW me FPS today that think outside the box. Game devs have completely lost the magic of game design.
Whats fascinating was that Wolf2009 spent most of it's development as an open-world game before the devs realized it just wasn't working. Elements of that still exist with the hub world levels being the sole remnants of it's initial open-world design so it's real surprising the game turned out as great as it did. Makes you wonder just how much better it would have been if they went with the hub-world approach from the get-go!
ah yes one of my favourite games of all times. i remember i could play the first two campaign maps as alien with my eyes closed, because i played it so much
the later game that came out with the same name was really good too in single player (not talking about avp 2 or 3)
Crazy that there has been as much time between Daggerfall and this or Killzone 2 as there has been between this and modern games. Really throws into sharp relief how everything stalled out in the 2010s.
I remember somewhere can download the whole avp2 with expansion pack, not sure if the link is still active today...
This game was SUPER underrated, I remember playing the multiplayer and having a blast.
Scored this on sale for $5, brought me back. I'm gonna force my kinda to play it someday.
I remember thinking the future was bright for alien games... We haven't had a game to match this one in over a decade.
If you mean the AvP2 that used the old Lithtech engine (2001, I think?), that was one of the best games I've ever played. I have my discs too, but I can't get the damn thing to run on modern Windows. PC Gaming Wiki is no help, which is unusual. Any advice would be appreciated.
Man I loved this game so much! The second part was equally amazing. Had tons of fun in the multiplayer!
The Aliens Vs Predator 2 (2003) Pc game multiplayer was awesome back in the day, people still keep private servers going for it
I just bought this game again after almost 15 years and I'm having a good time with the campaign
It was so cool to finally get a new game after the many years following AVP2.
Bro they could remaster or remake this and I would buy it.
The multiplayer was amazing. you had a mode with human+pred+Aliens in a 3 way tdm. Infection mode that worked like the halo mode with aliens + humans. Man this game was amazing I wan't another one so bad.
I forget what the mode was called, but the multiplayer game where any marine gets bit by an alien and then turns into one was brilliant!!
I remember when you and mesh reviewed this back in the day
yep, it's time to replay Alien Isolation this halloween season yet again
You can still get AvP2 downloaded and the online is community run so you can still play AvP2 online.
All they had to do for Colonial Marines was give us more maps for the single player. They fudged everything up spectacularly.
I have been thinking about this game recently so it is a suprise to see you retro review it. I would love to see you give Republic Commando a retro review. 👍
I bought this on day one and it's been sitting in my Steam library ever since, never installed. One day I shall play it. One day.
I loved this when released and a solid 8.5/9 for me. No idea why some reviewers only gave it a 5 or a 6. It's got TONS of good scare moments. The sound the graphics the mission layouts were all spot on. We really were spoiled rotten back then. My current games are Football Manager 2024...Football is old! And the Age Of Empires II DLC packs. That's still hugely popular 20 plus years after release. What good games have been released the last 2/3 years?
MindPulp took a look at this game somewhat recently as well and reminded me how awesome it was. Such a solid game for the time.
More Retro Reviews please, if you got time. I still remember this game and I'm shocked it's already 14 years old. Games were better then...
I remember the Mack & Mesh episodes on this!
playing this game online as the alien gave me actual bloodlust, I quickly abstained from that heh
the multiplayer in this game was sooooo much fun back when it came out.
Mack will you be playing Vermintide 2 anytime soon? They are trying to finally implement playing as the enemy with versus mode.
The new mode seems to be in open beta.
I was 7-9 years old playing this game online, i love this game and my disc was glitched couldn’t play the marines campaign lmao, fav was xeno
I played this so much back on my Xbox 360 and I'm happy to say it has backwards compatibility with Xbox One and Xbox Series. Great times with the species team based multiplayer. There was nothing else like it, with how asymmetrical the three factions were. It's a shame that there's nothing else like it.
I absolutely loved avp alle 3 of them all ways liked, the marine campaign the most. The creepy feeling weaker the aliens just so immersing.
Duuuude I've been waiting so long for someone to revisit this, it's so fucking good it deserves more recognition
Time has been very kind to this game. I always have it installed.
Should organize a time with the community to jump in the Multiplayer. It's amazing fun.
I was 10 years old when this game out and I remember being completely awestruck by the graphics. I don't think there's any other game at the time that looked this good. Way ahead of its time.
