    A small but helpful workflow tip for taking video notes; when I'm taking notes on a video in Notion as you talked about ~10:00, I put the video directly underneath the line I am typing on. That way, as I complete a note and hit enter, the video moves down the page with me. When I'm done, I move the video back up to the top!

    August, this info is invaluable. Especially for someone like me, new to Notion and terrible at organization. One quick question I have:
    What is the reason to include the green References block inside each page, when the individual media/notes are already linked under the title? **EDIT** Nevermind this question I get it now! You're actively refining your own knowledge of the topic inside that topic's knowledge vault page. I can see how having that References block is helpful now. Sorry I guess it wasn't clicking with me at first.**
    I never realized I wasn’t a “systems thinker” until I started watching your videos. Discovering that has actually allowed my thinking to become less scattered and far more effective, thus relieving personal stress from so much data coming in. I can’t thank you enough!

    09:53 - On the small irritation of being pushed away from an embedded video as you make notes - What I now do is take notes *above* the video. Then, when I've finished the video, I drag it to the top and clean up the notes which are now underneath. (Could also duplicate the embed and make notes between the two, to save the need to drag it up afterwards).

    I'm experiencing one problem at the moment though. I've integrated readwise with notion and everything looked good in the beginning. Now, it won't categorize my saved media. It still saves into Notion, but no categories. I've heard other people have had the same issues and would really appreciate if somebody could help out.

    Also I'd like to point out another way to take notes on PDF files you might have around. In Google Drive I have a dump folder of handbooks, guides, manuals, etc. that I then link to Kami (a Google Drive plugin for a web pdf reader, with the same functionality as the Kindle reader). Then in a text cell (text, not URL) within the Books Vault I'll add just an emoji of a cloud or a CD, select it, and I'll assign the Kami link to it. Its a very clean way to mask large links in a better way.

    If you want to take notes on a YT video (9:55 in your video), there are three other ways that come to mind (other than opening a notes app and copy-pasting the notes):
    1) You open another instance of Notion with -N and have the video run in one window while taking notes on the same page (!) with no worries about scrolling away from the video.
    2) If you are ready to open another note-taking app, you might as well click on the YT link and watch the video in RUclips while taking your notes directly in Notion.
    3) You might just create two columns and watch the video on the left side while taking notes on the right side (which will postpone your scrolling problem, not solve it, admittedly) - or you just take your notes ABOVE the video. That way you can keep watching and take your notes.
    Hope this helps.

    • @augustbradley
      @augustbradley  4 года назад +3

      Yes, #1 is what I had in mind when describing this - I would
      open Notion as may notes app (of course!), to the same page as the video, with it playing in one window and taking notes in the other window of the same page. An even better way to open a second Notion window is hold Cmnd on Mac (Ctrl on PC) and click on the link you want to open second window - that link opens in a the window view.

I have been wondering how (and am trying) to set up a full dashboard for a more intensive and specialised course (such as a certificate or degree) within the training vault. To add a new course takes you into the page with all the properties. Is this the page you would set up a detailed dashboard? Or would you start with a fresh clean page? How would you integrate it into the current system? I hope to find a clean, straightforward and streamlined way to do this. Thank you again. Instead of opening another page to enter notes on a video, could instead just embed a "Quick Notes" GoogleDrive doc specifically for immediate notetaking, and then shrink that window on the page. That would let the page in the embed keep scrolling but keep the notion page where it is. Then copy/paste.

    I see you have combined your library and media vault into one. I have a separate vault for academic literature which has a lot more columns such as authors, journal/conference, year, DOI, research project etc. Is this something that would be better suited to its own vault or is there a way to combine it into the media vault?

      Hey Andy, I'm in the same boat here. I tend to keep one library (helpfully called "The Library") for academic books, ebooks, and journal articles, and then a separate databased (I've called it "The Vault" just to differentiate) for anything non-academic (blog posts, videos, podcasts etc). This system helps me to keep a bit of separation between work and non-work media, even though there are obviously overlaps in everything (fwiw I'm a media academic)

      @S. Wu
      - I was where you are this past March and I can tell you from experience that watching the trainings and building your template from scratch is the FASTEST way to start mastering Notion.
      Sure, August has the finest N templates I've seen. And in the beginning, like many beginners -- I was a template hoarder.
      Over time, I deleted most of them.
      Then a couple of months in, I was confident enough to start modifying August's templates [gasp! I know... I know...]. And whenever I could grab a moment, I was pulling his apart to see how he structured them and why.
      Soon after, I didn't care whether he released a template or not bc I could build my own. Fairly fast.
      A few weeks ago, he did a training on a Sales & Marketing dashboard w/another Notion luminary, William Nutt. I must have missed the notice that he was providing the template for free, bc I built one myself.
      I just rewatched the video and built it alongside him.
      I'm telling you, my virtual friend -- being given templates is the seductive booby prize.
      Sure, it's fast and easy but it also keeps you dependent on others to make Notion your own.
      Sure, get August's free ones up above by signing up for his newsletter. They are the finest in the Notionverse.
      And of course, use them. Study them. The structure under the hood is like fine art, a beauty in it's elegance and simplicity.
      But always keep your eye on the prize -- you want to knowledge and experience of being able to build your own, according to YOUR needs, not someone else's.
      And the only way to get there is to learn how to build them yourself.

    Hey August I am building/built what I call a Modular Degree. It is a self-curated (hopefully down the line I can use AI or digital mentors or something for the future tool) list of courses and edu resources for someone to either pursue a skill, or even a degree's worth of knowledge. Been marketing it as an alternative to college even. I bring this up because I've been using sheets then airtable, and now Notion to organize it all.
    It is a pretty neat system that one day I hope to show you, but I was wonder how your Mind Expansion could fit into this Mod Degree system. Was keen to explore your work with the aim of moving forward with you. Appologies if we are being dumb but refering to the 'New knowledge vault template' at 0.08, we have been searching for it high and low on your sites but sadly, to no avail. Would really appreciate the link to said dashboard.
    Many thanks in advance.

      Hi Ersatz, greetings! Ah, that is a fair point of confusion, Unfortunately, in Notion there are three types of "templates", and Notion the term "template" for each. I was referring to a "database template" that you create inside a database and can apply to each new entry in that database (I am showing you ideas here for a database template so you can re-create in your own system if you wish). The second type of "template" is a template button inside of pages, and the third is what you are referring to, where a full Notion page can be duplicated as a template. Confusing having the same word describing three different things.
      The current free template pack that enables duplication for other users has all of my temples (for that category of template) that exist. Haven't made a public duplication template for any of the Knowledge Management sections yet. I will be making a new massive template collection of this type covering just about everything in the system for the online course that I'm launching soon. Hope that helps!

    August, when you tweak your templates, like you did in this video, do you have to manually go back to all the other documents that were created with the "old" template and manually update them or is there a process you can use to automatically update the older pages to leverage the new template?

    • @augustbradley
      @augustbradley  3 года назад

      If the old page does not have any custom content, you can delete the old template material/formatting. A blank page in the old one will let you re-apply the new template. It is manual, but quick and easy for each one.

    Readwise seems to export Airr podcasts to Notion categorized as articles. Is this behavior the same for you, or are you still manually adding Airr highlights?

    • @augustbradley
      @augustbradley  4 года назад +1

      Yes unfortunately that's the case right now, I have spoken with the top readwise people about it and they have it on their list to change so it saves them as podcasts.But hasn't happened yet.

    I have been watching all of your videos in order and I am creating your whole system (Including what is not shared on the template) and changing it to adapt it to my circumstances (Engineering student), after showing my friends they are very interested in it. Would you be okay with me sharing a template publicly to the engineering students community? I will of course credit you as the original creator of the system since this is your amazing creation and I just adapted it and added a couple more database systems

      I think it is best for people to build their own workspace to fully understand its inner workings. I will be provide extensive templates in the upcoming Notion course, but those will come with deep training on how to use them in life.

      I recorded the cell phone screen separately, then added it when editing. But you can bring a cell phone screen in using software such as OBS or vMix (though it's a bit complicated).

    August this is so insightful, thanks so much. I've being watching your videos for some time now and just transformed my entire Notion workflow into what you are showcasing here. I have a question though, right now I am using Obsidian as my external knowledge management system.
    After you published the notes and ideas video in which you describe how you connect and related notes with content inside Notion I started wondering what happen with your workflow to send information to Roam as describe here: ruclips.net/video/JeUPihMsCnE/видео.html
    I tried to use your current notes within Notion but I found that is lacking something that I think is quite valuable from applications like Roam and Obsidian and that's the back link. Even when you can do that manually with Notion I prefer it to be automatic for now. Did you stop using Roam or are you using it in a different way now?
    Thanks again for all the help with Notion and all the teachings; keep up the good work!

      Good questions Rafael - yes, I'm losing interest in Roam. It's interesting and has real value, but Notion does so much more and the ability to have notes and media resurface in the right place takes it further than anything I have seen in Roam/Obsidian (which is more random and less deliberate at resurfacing). Also the burden/work of maintaining the bridge across the two apps is a lot of work. I like the back-link feature, but that's not enough to compete with so much more in Notion (for me) -- If we can get that backlinking in Notion soon, then it will be game over 🙂. But these things are very personal, and others find more value in Roam/Obsidian so of course you should decide for yourself. This is just my perspective. But I think most people do not realize how far Notion can go at contextual resurfacing, which is the most important part of knowledge management to me. Good thoughts!

      @@augustbradley Thanks so much for your reply. Indeed I am still going back and forth between Notion. Back links is super important to me because of the exact same thing that you mention about resurfacing. I am using Notion as a second or even third stage filtering process. When I get to the knoweledge lab I am almost certain that I will move some pieces of information into Obsidian. The other thing that I like and saw the difference between Obsidian and Notion is that I can make connections at a very granular level and since I have most Knowlege Labs topics replicated in Obsidian the difference is that at that level I have smaller pieces of notes that I can link together and conform something new when I do that normally in Obsidian then I move the content into Notion. I am still experimenting with this approach and I agree having backlinks in Notion would be a game changer.
      I definitly waiting for more content from you to keep learning about this fascinating topic of knowledge management. Thanks again
