    So I'm leaving his comment here for you to see as it is your most recent video and you are likely to actually see it. You were a random guy on RUclips who helped me achieve a goal I had set out for myself this year in figuring out how to quantify myself a bit more with software. You then somehow became one of my favorite podcasters ( I listen to a lot of podcasts). I actually read your newsletter (I barely read these things these days). Your content is amazing. Thank you for all that you do.

      Agreed. When I started out (new to your system and new to Notion) it was creating it in Notion identical to yours. Since I have started using it, in addition to a greater understanding of Notion, I have started to personalise. Apart from the primary purpose - system, this has been a great crash course on Notion. Sincerely, thank you August.

      Thanks Warren! Means a lot to me to hear this. Very happy that it's been valuable to you and has helped in some way to make things happen for you. There is a ton of power in measuring and studying what's working and what's not, just be careful not to go overboard but it can be quite revealing and hep us find a better path.
      I also love that the podcast and the newsletter have been helpful, increasingly all of these various platforms will be more complementary of each other. New podcast season coming soon.
      I'm glad you thought to post in the new one here, I'm falling behind on comments on older videos (have been trying to answer very single one, but it is getting harder and harder as the viewership grows quickly :)

      Fantastic to hear this Andrew, thanks. For sure always look for ways to customize, but starting with a core system I think helps facilitate faster growth and in most cases a better structural design. Lots more to come.

      @@agreen1604 I 100% agree! Before I found this channel, I had only just discovered Notion, and I could see it's full potential from the get go. But seeing all these different videos trying to explain the relations and rollups just had me completely stumped on how I would use them in my own Notion system. Now I'm beginning to create my own systems in other areas of my life as well using these same principles and it all makes total sense. I feel like I already have a small foundation of knowledge on Systems Thinking, and I can't wait to explore it further. Thank you August.

    Hi August,
    I've never commented on a youtube video before in my life but I really felt compelled to leave one on this occasion.
    Currently I am an honours student looking to go onto a PhD relating to organisational development. I Also work as a personal trainer and am trying to build a small consulting business on the side which I'd like to grow into my full time gig. I've always had big visions, big ambitions and a clear sense of direction, but i've always struggled with the daily actions and implementations to make those visions a reality, with juggling different plates and interests. This system has really changed to game for me and now those dreams don't seem so far off. Everything is just so much clearer from both a higher level and a ground level perspective. I'm blown away this level of value is offered for free.
    Thank you so much 🙏

    You might find it funny to see this comment this far in the future after this video was created, but what you presented here is timeless! Thank you so much for all the value you're offering. You've opened my eyes to a world of possibilities. This is both exciting and encouraging. I'm obsessed with organizational processes, statistics and keeping things consolidated. You have no idea how rewarding it feels having such a system in place for pretty much everything I do in my day-to-day life! Thank you!

    I was looking for Knowledge Base Templates for Notion on Google. This is the first video I watch of you and from the beginning, I knew it is what I need. I've been wanting to create a system for content creation for marketing purposes, with a par of knowledge finding, capturing, synthesizing and distilling. I've been fiddling with notion for about a year or so, but immediately knew it has something. You have unlocked the full potential of this beauty. Thank you, Sir. For sharing the knowledge. Will certainly be looking to start implementing your methodology asap for my project. It also gave me a second perspective ( a more broad one) on systems and mind management. Wow!

  • @MicheleGill
    @MicheleGill 4 года назад +4

    Thank you, August. I started following you for the projects/tasks systems you created, and they are fantastic-I use them daily. I then moved on to the review cycles, which helps ensure that I’m keeping my time and energy focused on what matters to me. Both of these approaches have allowed me to be much more *present* and even relaxed on a day to day basis because I have a system that ensures nothing is forgotten or lost, and information and tasks are presented just when I need them, in a way that is not overwhelming. Content production was icing on the cake and gave me a way to manage my creative works.
    Now with the vaults videos, you have taken everything to a whole new level in that I have a way to keep my notes, inspirations, and ideas connected note only to my projects and creative works, but to developing a body of knowledge in ONE PLACE about topics I care about. I was doing that, sort of, “just in time” in Evernote, but I like your system so much better as I can curate and build on areas that are personally important to me, crafting a knowledge resource or personal library of information that I can use to support my many projects and roles. Watching these videos and implementing them has given me me a fun and oh so helpful project to work on during this pandemic. And it’s already bearing fruit! Count me as one of your biggest fans.

    This is hands-on the richest and more inspiring Notion video I ever watched, a video that pushes the bar for the Notion Community by showing a whole new level of functionalities and potential.
    The system shared is clearly geared toward knowledge consolidation, abstraction, and internalization.
    To better understand the system and how we can incorporate it within our workflows, I think it would be extremely useful to see how the actual knowledge transfer process works. Ideally, both from the operational perspective (do you use any status category to identify material which is worth transfer, how do you set-up time for the transfer, is this included in you weekly review etc.) and, from a conceptual perspective (how progressive summarization helps you consolidating knowledge etc.) hope it makes sense 😉
    A fixed/scrolling /toc would enhance this set-up beautifully, really hope Notion can release this feature soon.
    In the meanwhile, thanks again for making such high-quality material available for free for the rest of us 🙏🏽

      Great thoughts Paolo -- I'm noting several of those ideas for future videos. First, the next several videos will build on and add to this system, making it even better so hold on for those. Then second, I tend to build out Knowledge Vault topics as needed, when necessary to create content for prepare for meetings or for growing business needs. Build it out as needed, but do it here in the knowledge vault. Or if you are exploring something out of personal curiosity apply the learning all in the Knowledge vault. But I usually don't take hours just for that when there is not an immediate need, not enough time to do that.

    Ich muss das mal auf deutsch schreiben, weil mir für das, was ich grade empfinde, seit ich dieses Video verstand, einfach die richtigen Vokabeln fehlen: Ich hab keine Ahnung, wie du diese ganzen Sachen im Kopf behalten kannst und mein inneres Vermögen reichte noch nicht aus, um für allein dahin zu kommen. BUT: es ist einfach ein Traum!!! Ich hab immer so viele Ideen an denen ich gleichzeitig arbeite und immer hab ich überall irgendwelche Zettel dafür herum liegen und NIE, NIEMALS sind diese Zettel zur gleichen Zeit am gleichen Ort. Und du zeigst mir eine Möglichkeit, egal wo ich meine Ideen hin schreibe, sie kommen immer da an, wo sie hin gehören, wenn ich mich dem entsprechenden Projekt widmen will!!! Wie geil is das denn bitte... tschuldigung. Aber wirklich wahr! Ich hab mir immer behelfsmäßige Systeme einfallen lassen, die zwar praktikabel, aber partiell ziemlich langweilig waren, was dann zur Folge hatte, dass das Projekt letztlich vergessen war und ich mir lieber neues einfallen lies. Dieses System hat so viel von dem natürlichen Verlauf der Dinge: Man tut einen Samen in die Erde, also eine Idee ins Lab und gießt es und düngt es und lässt es sich entwickeln, bis es durch die Oberfläche bricht und zur Welt kommt. Sagenhaft!!! You make my day!!! Thank you so so much!!!

However, what I find so curious about GTD is that even though it's ideas have been influential, I have never met anyone who uses GTD exactly as it's laid out. Everyone I know uses elements of it, but has deviated from it in some way.

    It just hit me that a knowledge vault is comparable to a Wikipedia article. A Wikipedia article is an aggregation of the best knowledge and research (as well as writing skills and upkeep) pulling in from many sources across the Internet, listed as references and footnotes. And the best articles are built up over time, little by little, thanks to contributions from many individuals.
    Knowledge vaults are really one-person Wikipedias, doing the same except pulling in from your own saved sources (which resurface in context here in PPV).
    This has helped me organize my PPV system. Thanks!

    18:05 - An important distinction to note for anyone else who was curious: this is making a COPY of the note. I.e. if you make changes in the copy (even if you delete the words copy of), those will not be reflected in the original (and vice versa). For fellow programming nerds, this is known as a "deep copy."
    In other words, you will not be embedding the Note 1 page into your notes.
    As of today (2020-01-08), AFAIK, there isn't a feature that allows you to embed pages. However, it's possible they may implement that feature as shown here:
    www.notion.so/Introducing-Inline-Page-for-Notion-a-new-way-to-embed-pages-inside-pages-concept-7b93151e7204432da4d7ced3285e7411

I can say with certainty that this system is amazing! I'm still tinkering around with it and trying to find ways to streamline and design some of my own projects and goals (such as speaking 6 languages fluently) but so far it's done wonders for me. I actually find myself having more time and being more focused now that before! Coming from a philosophy and cognitive science background, I have to say: I find your videos to be an amazing application of the theories of emergence/connectionism/coherentism/holism into practical usage. The contrast between Systems Thinking and functionally reductive approaches to life and knowledge management (where the latter seems to be the commonly endorsed one) stands a perfect analogy to the contrast you have in the literature of the philosophy of mind. An example would be the emergentist, phenomenological vs. the analytic, computational approaches to consciousness. I watched through your series in amazement as I saw how you masterfully applied these philosophical insights to daily usage. Kudos to PPV; I can't even begin to tell how much this helped me.
    Two questions, if I may: (1) I want to integrate the planning and task management of my indie (video) game development projects to PPV as you define in these videos. Would you recommend them implemented as a separate module (such as your content creation machine) or just as projects? A game dev. project would be a long term project (1 year+) with lots of stages, modules, notes and wikis. I can't decide if it would be better to have separate modules of this (such as terrain generation, combat system, etc.) entered as separate projects - or having the whole game as a project and managing the modules within its own kanban board, creating action items from inside this project.
    (2) How would you recommend handling mundane notes in this system? Such as taking note of some temporary address, some interesting song, a summary of a video conference with a friend; in short something that is not a note or idea in the sense that it helps build towards a knowledge lab item or a pillar?
    Thank you again for this priceless channel.

    • @augustbradley
      @augustbradley 4 года назад +6

      Awesome summary and feedback, thanks! (1) If it’s your core business I’d be inclined to do the development as full Projects/Goals but perhaps borrow some of the dashboard elements from the Content Machine to merge the process flow views. Maybe set up a full content machine dashboard / pipeline inside the development goal/project workspace (that would be super cool). (2) Do mundane notes the Notes DB but set up a tag for “temporary” to delete sooner. Or just use a separate app such as Drafts or the one built into your is for temporary mundane notes.

    1) Would your equivalent to “evergreen notes” be the notes in the Knowledge Lab DB or the notes in the Ideas and Notes DB? Or would both be considered “evergreen notes”?
    2) Why do use linked db for the Ideas and Notes within a Knowledge Lab entry, if they are already listed in the “relational db” property?
    Thanks so much! I really enjoy your content - it’s helping me reflect about my own KM system and make it more robust!

    Hello August, I'm going through your videos again in a little more detail now that I've set mostly set up and begun using parts of your system (building up to the whole system), and in this video I noticed that there were no relational links connecting the Media Vault and Academy to the Knowledge Lab. So useful thanks for these ideas! great to have so much to get started with for free. You're helping a lot of people! I was wondering with the knowledge lab you have the self-referential database linking the notes for a specific topic. But you don't link the books or media related to this topic? Is it because you've already transferred the most useful parts into the topic entry, so it would be redundant?

      Self-referencing filtered views for Media Vault, the Tools-Skill-Services Vault (and for some people the Courses Vault) were quickly added to the Knowledge Vault template shortly after this video, it now includes all of this. You'll see that added in videos that follow in the series. Good observation, Paul!

    Hey August, I just want to thank you for sharing your system. It has given me a new tailwind to get out of my rut and get organised and focus.
    One question: Why do you only link the Notes/Ideas database to the knowledge lab, and not the Book Vault and Media Vault as well? Do you extract all the important bits into separate Notes/Ideas after reading the book/media? Currently I am linking each Book and Media to the different knowledge lab topics as well. So in the Knowledge Lab Topic I see all the relevant Notes as well as Books and Media. What are your thoughts on this?

    • @augustbradley
      @augustbradley 4 года назад +9

      Great to hear that Werner, congrats on your progress!
      I did/do also link the media vault to the knowledge lab, the property might be turned off in the table view you saw, but it is linked through a relation. I don't have the book vault linked because I tend to do bigger sit-down sessions to coordinate those two, and rely less on a quick connection. But nothing wrong with connecting it too. My next video will resolve that issue regardless, with a new twist to the system.

    Hey August, I saw all your videos so far, they have been so valuable to me. For a period of time I tried to analyze what I consume and figure ways to quantify it, I consumed a lot of media but not all benefited me so that was the reason I had to implement such a system. I am a big fan of giving time specific value, and I also think that time can be measured by peace of mind. So for example if I worked really hard all day and got past the 8 hour screen Time limit across all devices, I would prioritize peace of mind over the money that would be brought by the time spent achieving it. I also wonder where you would manage Documentaries in the Life OS in Notion? would you manage them in the media vault or in a separate section. Seeing that some documentaries may offer value in between books but also more than normal media vaults. and lastly much thanks for the clean and organized videos that you present. It has been so helpful in figuring out my life.

    • @augustbradley
      @augustbradley 4 года назад +1

      Great questions Abd, and I love to see you thoughtfully you're approaching all this. Documentaries can get close to video courses, but are generally more like books or other movies/videos. Usually I would put them in the Media Vault but take more extensive notes than usual on them. Alternately, if it's super instructional it could go in the courses vault. Cant go wrong, just capture the knowledge from it and make it accessible for future revisits and maximum learning!

    Hello August, incredible video once again; this system has literally transformed my life already. Quick question though - How do you find the time to complete all of this notation & aggregating of notes into the Knowledge Lab articles? • @Louis1974
      @Louis1974 4 года назад

      As a related question, would it be useful to have the media vault right in the knowledge topic (like the notes database) filtered for that topic? This way you could perhaps more readily bring the highlighted parts of those clipped articles in the knowledge lab?

    • @augustbradley
      @augustbradley 4 года назад +1

      Thanks James, super happy to hear it has all been helpful.
      Great question, I should have elaborated on that. I'll aggregate and refine the info going into the Knowledge Vault when I have a need for it. No set pre-schedule routine, just as I approach a need for new insights on a topic, I will collect and pull the relevant info into it and organize my understanding on the topic in the knowledge lab entry. This could be for e an upcoming meeting, a newsletter or video in production, a need to change something in my business, whatever sparks the need for the information. I will then use the knowledge lab entry as the place I process and organize my thinking on it. So apply it here as the need comes up, otherwise would take too much time. This is typically part of completing another task in the Action Zone, not just working on the knowledge lab for its own sake Hope that helps!

    Hey August, big fan of your content so far! I have a question: what do you do with “archived” projects and goals that have been completed (and also older weeks from week reviews). My system is growing quite large and I find myself having to sift through a lot of drop downs when creating new relational databases. Do you move them into a completed projects database? Do you ever “clean up” the weeks? Kudos on your growth and thanks again to anyone who could shed light on this!

    • @augustbradley
      @augustbradley 4 года назад +1

      Thanks! So far I have not done anything other than marking complete, as it has not slowed down the databases. At some point size might slow down databases, at which time I would either delete the very old ones or move them to an archived database (set up the same as the active one). For the issue you mention, sifting through long lists when selecting DB relations, I just go straight to the search field and type the first few letters to find the one I'm looking for. Hope that helps!

    • @augustbradley

    • @AgostinoFamlonga
      @AgostinoFamlonga 4 года назад

      @@augustbradley yes, I saw this connection as a source in the notes. But the question was about the link between the lab and the media and course databases. I was wondering why this configuration (in my lab I put the link, and I find it useful).

    • @DavidEsp1
      @DavidEsp1 3 года назад

      I've been wondering about that also. Obviously we are free to add whatever extra properties we like, including relation to Source (e.g. Books/Media) DB. But does their noted absence imply that it is inadvisable - that we should instead stick to a recommended workflow where we first deliberately make "interim" notes on bunches of media/books based on some "theme of the moment" (transient perspective, in the long term) then base the (continuously evolving) "evergreen" knowledge lab items on bunches of these notes? Deliberately keeping the knowledge dependency pyramid-shaped (no lumps or props half-way up!). Of course, apart from properties, any such links (e.g. to particularly illustrative sources) can also be included in the content portion, either free-form or via filtered views of linked tables, as demonstrated in this presentation. Properties being more about knowledge flow/dependency/rediscovery support and management, in this (PPV) scheme via data-based dashboards. Have I got it right?

After watching this video (and considering my own implementation), I was wondering, do you have a specific reason for not having a direct relation between “Notes & Ideas” and projects? I often find that I have ideas or notes related to projects I’m working on that I want to capture quickly. They’re not necessarily linked to a knowledge subject as they can be very project specific, so I figured I’d just add a link to projects as well. Maybe you have some really nice video or book notes that you read that's in a page in the media vault / book vault. They should also be referenced into the right knowledge vault topic?

    Nice video August! One question, how to link up this approach with Obsidian/Roam note flow for ideas. Thanks,

      I'm fading away from that, it's just not worth the effort. Notion does so much more, I suggest keeping it all in Notion.

    Please make a detailed video on how your Notion Knowledge management system connects with ROAM. I have seen your video on Keep Productive. But I think More details will be really really helpful as ROAM takes the links we create between Knowledge Labs on another level.

      I'm loosing interest in Roam. Notion just does so much more and it's not worth spending the time bridging the two.

    I saw your Notion-Roam video on Keeping Productive. I've watched it three times. Where in this system you describe in this current video would you send refined stuff from Notion to Roam?

      Hi Bill, good question. With Roam now being expensive for most (at the time I recorded that video Roam was free), and this being a Notion series I didn't want to being that into this series and felt it was covered on Keep Productive fully. But the other reason is frankly I'm loosing interest in Roam, it's not living up to the initial hope I had for it. Not delivering enough insight and unexpected connections. Notion just does so much more so much easier, even in the note-taking realm (let alone all the other areas). I'm fading away from Roam. If (hoping) we get inline bi-directional linking of Roam in Notion, then game over.

      Yeah. I don’t know if Roam’s back linking actually generates new ideas. I’ve never seen anyone give any real examples of how they discover new ideas by means of that. I think I dear generation has to occur in our OWN brains. I haven’t found much discussion about this on the net. Maybe some productivity you tuber will do a video on this.

      @@billpippel2667 I think it happens, but not at the degree to which it justifies the effort to set that up. Always trade offs. Good thoughts.

      @@augustbradley please keep pushing Notion internally for automated backlinking. Following Obsidian's approach would be excellent here.

    Are you deliberately calling the notes 'note 1, note 2' etc, or are they just dummy names for your demo database? I feel like having a more descriptive title of the ideas and notes would help differentiate the note and idea context.
    Great video and thank you for your content.

      These are samples for the purpose of the demo in the template. Use descriptive note titles for actual notes. Hope that helps!

    11:37 "It's" --> "its". I point it out only to help discourage the spread of inappropriate apostrophe use.
