  • Dreamy - Erroll Garner in 1964.
Erroll Louis Garner ( 1921 - 1977) was an American jazz pianist and composer known for his swing playing and ballads.
His best-known composition, the ballad Misty, has become a jazz standard. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania ,
Erroll began playing piano at the age of 3. He attended George Westinghouse High School, as did fellow pianists Billy Strayhorn and Ahmad Jamal.
Garner was self-taught and remained an "ear player" all his life he never learned to read music. .
At age 14 in 1937 he joined local saxophonist Leroy Brown. He played locally in the shadow of his older pianist brother Linton Garner and moved to New York in 1944. He briefly worked with the bassist Slam Stewart, and though not a bebop musician per se, in 1947 played with Charlie Parker on the famous "Cool Blues" session. Although his admission to the Pittsburgh music union was initially refused because of his inability to read music, they eventually relented in 1956 and made him an honorary member.
Garner is credited with having a superb memory of music. After attending a concert by the Russian pianist Emil Gilels, Garner returned to his apartment and was able to play a large portion of the performed music by recall. He was also known for his occasional vocalizations while playing, which can be heard on many of his recordings.
He helped to bridge the gap for jazz musicians between nightclubs and the concert hall. Until his death on January 2, 1977, he made many tours both at home and abroad, and produced a large volume of recorded work.
In this recording he is accompanied by Eddie Calhoen on bass and Kelly Martin on drums.

I’ve felt this way and felt that it was objective truth since I discovered Erroll Garner. I never knew another person who had known of Erroll Garner, let alone perceived his exquisiteness in playing. Erroll Garner is a true gift of existence.

Although Misty is his most famous song, Dreamy is his most beautiful song. Indeed.. And nobody else has ever played it like him.

How i love errolls many ways of playing dreamy.
He was beyond genius in my book.
Erroll had the most sensitive and God given ability to express beauty and melody with his playing.
God how I love this man's sublime ability.

Garner is the world's best jazz pianist. No matter whether he could read music or not. So what? He was an instinctive musician, playing by impulse.

I inherited the Erroll Garner album "Other Voices" from my father. This tract is on it and I believe it is my favorite. I just found the CD, Other Voices, on Amazon and purchased it. It is part of the soundtrack of my life. Thank you Father, for exposing me to such beauty. May you RIP.

AND Misty is the signature song of the great romantic and ballad singer Johnny Mathis whom we still have among us. Johnny still tours and sings for the people. Talented musicians like Errol come along once in a while and I think we are very blessed to have them. Rest in peace great pianist.

I played the piano growing up as a child, but sight reading always let me down and I never thought I was going to go far. Then I came across this guy, a total inspiration who showed that as long as you have the music in you, that’s all that counts. He’s a one-off for sure!

Cleat, yes, isn't Errol a wonder? He was given a gift by our creator, knowing how to read sheet music is nice but some of them who can read it can't play it worth a hoot. I love Errol's talent and style. His favorite song of mine is Misty with my favorite singer in the world, Johnny Mathis, singing it. These lovely artists have their place in time but not forever, it's nice to be able to enjoy them while they are here.

Some would point out that Erroll Garner didn't read music. There is no point for that. Sheets of music are unneeded to move the soul.

🎹 As a lifelong professional pianist, composer and musician, I can say without hesitation that Erroll Garner was the 2nd greatest discovery of my musical life... While it is the opera's of Richard Wagner that take first place. (Go figure!) 🎹

Garner and Peterson were, for my taste, milestones, support columns and nobility in the history of the jazz piano. They personified simultaneously a rather reserved character and an expolosive quality which could, and usually did, erupt. It's a real pity the jazz world had to lose them. Now however, there's Eliane Elias. Having heard some of her recordings and seen her combo recently in Munich, I believe she's a worthy successor to them.
    Regards,
    Horatio Nelson.
