This is my great Uncle and I remember watching him win the Grammys in 1976 I believe. My younger brother is named after him and the stories my dad used to tell about the younger cousins sneaking on Riverboats in Pittsburgh to hear ans watch him play. Hearing this breaks my heart over and over again. With tears streaming down my face. It's incredible to know he was actually a genius. He really was.
Deborah! Hello.....are you really lucky enough to have this genius blood in your veins!! Yes, his interpretations bring me to tears also. Tears of JOY!!! I saw him perform inzurich Switzerland...I could not believe the perfection of his performance. He just sat down and the music poured from his finger tips.... Heartbreakingly beautiful And I just loved the way he made those sounds as he played, like an accompaniment that could only be through him.....and his trio were really soooo ready for him.....they watched him and listened and knew on just what note they could join in.... Each time he plays a melody he makes a different interpretation of it, playing just what he felt he wanted it to sound at that particular moment...With love to you....I have sooooo enjoyed finding him again....
@@bctbbarlson231 This is so precious. That you actually were in his presence! What he can do with the piano I believe I can do with the pen. The genius is in our blood but few Garner's have been able harness their giftings - and in some cases the gift destroyed them. Yet we celebrate the master and I'm so glad we have met here. 🙏
Deborah! Hello, your reply gave me joy too..Yes your great uncle lives on...did you read all the comments. He is still adored...by me too...I just happened to come across him last week on U tube,,,How fortunate. I fwdd Misty to my young grandson, and my son in Switzeerland, and. To my young relatives here in USA, to show them what real music is... and then Laura, and then, like him, I couldn;t stop!!!! ..They must hear his amazing talent too...They loved it...I was in my early 40's when I heard him in Zurich, and Now, he makes me want to dance....incredible what his music does for us all...my love to you. He is adorable, ad is utterly carried away into his own world, when he plays. Bless him, and bless you and Thanks you for replying...Barbara
One of my favorite tunes, from my all- time favorite movie, masterfully played by your great uncle. You're truly blessed to have known such a talent.
@@swingman5635 I only got to see him accept the Grammy on TV as a little girl. My father knew him and oh the stories. I am still so thankful that the Garner blood runs through my veins.
This man never took a formal lesson in his life--entirely self taught. A chosen few people have gifts that come from a higher dimension--Garner was one of them!!
learning only by ourselves is a thing we can all do, but you have to have a passion for what it is, a motivation
A GIFT FROM HEAVEN !!
Wow.....just brilliant!
Sure, get the basic piano lessons on how to read the basics from the local church lady organist who showed me the basics. However I hope that local church lady organist allows you to run and be free. Back in my day
in the late 50's if you showed too much hot and good stuff that church lady would be intimidated.
Dad was in band with Erroll at Westinghouse. Dad brought him to brushton hill to replay rolls of music on the old upright that belonged to mom’s family. (Erroll played tuba in the high school band). Then off to dads to play the electric grand/player piano. Again, as the first time on brushton hill, after the roll finished, Erroll played it note for note on the grand. Dad remained friends. We attended his funeral back in homewood..flowers from big stars. We were the only white people. Imagine that. My favorite: His own version of “don’t be that way”
Ps, I visit him on his birthday at homewood cemetery
Genius doesn't even begin to eplain the talent this man had. Best piano player that ever lived in my opinion. So complex, and yet he did it so effortlessly.
Art Tatum, Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans, Eliane Elias (Brazil)
And, you can tell he had a LOT of FUN while doing so, too ! His joy was irrepressible - and, totally radiated with every grunt, plunk 'n groan... ;))
Totally agree my friend. 👍
Albert Einstein admittedly was not a good student and not good at math in his early years...
yes he s up that inhcredible
This is undoutably Garner's greatest performance. Perhaps the best recording of Laura in existence. I wonder what made Garner to perform so exquisitely on this particular song. This arrangement and performane of Laura is one for the ages.
I agree. The song seemed made for all that he can do. A sublime, timeless work of art.
Perfection that will last for ever.
certainly the best recording of Laura.
Why did Garner play so exquisitely on this song? Because he loved it like we do "Laura" lovers everywhere!
Yes indeed. And then the next time he played this one it was maybe much different. He was just too cool!
This was my Dad's favorite song and Mr. Garner his favorite performer. I grew up listening to great music. Dad passed in 1967, at the age of 42. I play this on his birthday every year, in his memory.
Good for you Joel. Much regards.
Joel Foxx Wonderful❤
And he never had a lesson. Genius!
Oh boy, you made me cry. I hope my son play some tunes for me when I'm gone.
Misty was my mom's favorite. She was Conservatory trained but in awe of Mr Garner. Took me to see him at Ravinia. I was a 60s rocker kid but he blew me away.
I remember hearing Garner's piano recordings when I was seven years old. Here I am, still enjoying them 70 years later. The definition of timeless.
Bless you
I’m 19 years old and I’ve been listening to him for a decade now!
@@kanani7410 You have good taste, Tivadar!
Great musician. Really timeless.

WHOEVER INVENTED THE PIANO WOULD NOT BELIEVE HOW MUCH MUSIC
CAN BE GOTTEN FROM THE PIANO. ERROLL PLAYED THIS TUNE SO BEAUTIFULLY
THAT THE COMPOSER WOULD HAVE BEEN IN TEARS UPON HEARING IT!
Concert by the see
It was an italian man. Cristoforo Bartolomei. Btw you are right.
With only 12 keys besides!
I believe I cry every time I hear Erroll play "Laura"
David Raskin composed the tune for the film Laura in 1944 😊
Whoever posted this, thank you so much. Best version ever.
i die a little bit every time I hear this. The man was impossibly talented.
This is one of my favorite videos on RUclips. Erroll was such a beautiful soul. Humankind is enriched by his existence.
The best version ever of this beautiful piece played by a man with amazing interpretation and harmony.
On the 7th day, after God created heaven and earth, he decided something great was left out. Then he gave us Errol Garner.
BRAVO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
James Martinez great compliment for a great artist
charpini up andSa
Just beautiful.

Dear Deborah, I was lucky to see and hear Erroll in Vienna (Austria) KONZERTHAUS on April 29, 1969. And I have to say that this changed my life in so many ways.
In that time I didn't know Erroll and was not so much interested in jazz. But since then I can't forget this concert, hear everyday a recording from him, have a lot of recordings and also a book about his life. I've been working very long time for the Austrian piano producing company BÖSENDORFER (Erroll was playing on this piano in Vienna), which is still producing highest quality pianos. I was taking care of artists and one day a man (from USA) came to me and was asking for a practice room. When he finshed he came back to me and we were talking about music/jazz/Erroll. And all of a sudden he took a picture out of his jacket: He with Erroll. The man's name Jim Doran. He told me that this picture is always with him. Later he bought 2 of our grand pianos and his name is also mentioned in a book (in German) about Errolls life. Recently there has been a 1.5 hour long presentation of Errolls complete CONCERT BY THE SEA in the Austrian radio with recordings I have never heard before. Wonderful.
And YES, he was a genius. I was crying when he died in 1977.
Best regards from Vienna.

Stefan, Thank you for sharing your beautiful memories both with Mr. Garner and Mr. Doran. I also read Mr. Doran's book "The Most Happy Piano" about Mr. Garner; and watched the documentary "Erroll Garner: No One Can Hear You Read", in which I learned that Mr. Doran himself is a pianist. Wish I was born when Mr. Garner was still alive, but I am grateful that I can enjoy his beautiful music whenever I want and get to know people's memories with Mr. Garner like yours.
Oh my lord. Those notes are so blissful. What an amazing man.
It's 2018 and I'm still here, listening to this wonderful rendition of Laura....simply exquisite!
Sounds like a least 5 people are playing at the same time(I've never seen 1 person get so much out of one piano)
PURE talent!❤
Exactly!
Except for Art Tatum. Sorry, just sayn. Yep Erroll was indeed mindful at the keys.
When he was a child he learned 4 hands piano pieces playing them by himself with his two... a self-taught gifted genius...
A musical genius at the top of his playing years. Possibly the greatest piano performance in classical jazz history. This song just moves you.
Really; agree it
You may be right, although EG has this transformative effect with everything he plays, I'll Remember April, I Cover the Waterfront, indeed even Teach Me Tonight (something seemingly lacking the sonority of the other two) galvanizes us.
It really does
Totally agree, the greatest pianist who ever lived.
Every song Erroll plays makes me feel like I'm totally swimming in an ocean of incredible music and melodies!!! :)
Like ripples of water on a sun-kissed lagoon on a special day in June... Smooth, mysterious and provocative!
Errol Garner is the music.
'"Laura's composer, David Raskin was brilliant.... as lyricist, Johnny Mercer, here....
'Scored for an exceptional Movie.... "Laura".....
Exactly, something like water...Marvellous.
My lord, sounds like a classical pianist,he is all over that keyboard
What must it feel like to have such mastery of an instrument that you can pour your being into such beautiful music. Amazing talent.
u r so rite
I can recognize this man’s style with my eyes closed. He is unique.
His genius is reflected in his ability to be a magnificent conduit of creativity without intellectualization. His intellect actually got in the way of his creativity and his articulation of his magnificent music. This is why he was intoxicated whenever he played because regular human consciousness got in the way of a superhuman connection to the supernal. Intellectual awareness can be an impediment to a jazz artist. Make yourself a vessel worthy of holding all the light that can be offered to you and you will be a magnificent Beacon of expression and expressivity. He is absolutely amazed at what he plays. What manifests through his fingers is astounding to both The Listener and to Erroll. What a rare treat to behold! I crave his Mastery of the pitch space. Astonishing freedom at the Pinnacle of man's perception and existence.
wow!
Absolutely Beautiful ! Erroll Garner was such a phenomenal pianist! 🎶❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Such depth to his playing. Thank you for the close-up's of his face. You can see and feel the emotion get more powerful as he gets more and more involved in the beauty of this music. So lovely.
Oh Erroll Garner you are just too marvelous for words!!! I love Laura and I love the way you play this song! Thank you!!!!
Erroll and his fellow musicians are playing one of my most memorable, most loved tunes. Laura has been on my mind since I saw the film version of LAURA way back in about 1946 in my home country, Germany. Now I am 90 years old, and I am still in love with Laura!
He plays so well and so naturally that the keyboard piano seems to be an extension of his hands
My initial interest in jazz was primarily guitar. Started noting the other musicians in the credits and broadened my horizons....horns, reeds, keyboards, etc. Got into Bill Evans, Oscar Peterson, Art Tatum and others but somehow never really explored Errol Garner. My loss. I have a lot of catching up to do.
Musical genius - such colour in his palette that even Debussy and Ravel would approve
Thats how you give a compliment
falconflight98 thank you good sir, I can already tell you must have a very accomplished and mature musical pallet 👍
Oh my God I've never heard a piano player sound or move like that in my life.
chamberlandfill I read what you wrote and I agree absolutely
He is unique he really is
Now consider that Earl Garner couldn’t read a note of music on the page. Entirely by ear.
@@rogerdsmith Wow, I didn't know that. It just makes him all the more amazing. Gifts are gifts, aren't they?
chamberlandfill oh, I love this♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
Wonderful. For those of us too young to have seen him perform live, it is great to see the joy that he emanates at the piano. Such an engaging performer, unlike some within jazz who would come across as deadly serious. What a genius he was, how sad that he died at just 55 years of age.
Erroll my feeling pur
incredible, this is perhaps the greatest piano rendition i have ever heard
Erroll Garner - piano
Eddie Calhoun - bass
Kelly Martin - drums
Jazz musicians back in the days had a habit to start playing a tune not saying to the other musicians what was going to be...let alone the key
That's incredible! I love jazz and although I'm still young, I've listened to it for years and I literally missed this truly great genius who I'm still discovering. It's a shame that Erroll, who had a pretty beautiful carrer judging things I've read on the subject, was pretty much forgotten after his death, even by the "aficionados" of classical jazz music. Hopefully, youtube exists. :)
It's almost 2am, and I cannot let go of this music. Splendid, incredible, bliss...
My very favorite jazz pianist of all time! His sense of melody and his ability to improvise was amazing! This classic Mercer piece is timeless and a real gem!
David Raskin piece.
So beautiful, so much feeling! and the technique is unbelievable. One of the greatest jazz pianists of all time.
I think Garner lived in the shadow of other pianist…but hope people will listen to the recording of him in the future..
my name's laura and i love errol garner. life is good
JustLaura I was named after this song!
Son improvisation à 3:00 , un pure génie de simplicité de swing et de mélodie !!!
Errol just....idk man. Is Errol even Errol, or is he just love manifesting through music? His harmonies are mesmerizing.
Listening to Errol play this masterpiece reminds me how much his talent meant to the world... he was irreplaceable.
Erroll Garner was one of those brilliant, naturally gifted musicians, who was able to make a piano sound like an orchestra. he played some of the greatest pieces in recorded jazz history. RIP Erroll
Incroyable :il joue dans la tonalité qui lui tombe sous les doigts et improvise avec aisance!!
Les musiciens comprendrons la difficulté de pouvoir faire ça!!!
Même chose avec une version de Misty en public qu'il joue en Sol!!!
ONCE IN A MILLION YEARS MUSICAL GENIUS
WOW! The BEST rendition of this song "LAURA" and my favorite song EVER. I thank you for posting.💌💌💌
I m very happy about your comment. Erroll is still living.... In me and in so many people and bringst me happyness and Joy everyday. I am still so happy that I could see/hear him live in concert in Vienna 1969 when I was only 16
Regards to all his fans
Errol Garner is a genius. Ele acaricia as teclas do piano👏👏👏👏
This is the greatest single rendition of this greatest of film themes I have ever heard.
Solo puede envidiarse aquello que no se puede alcanzar, por eso, este hombre despierta mi mayor envidia, por su sensibilidad , su maestría y por ser inalcanzable. España.
Just compare this version of "Laura" with another, more famous, recorded for Columbia some years before: they are totally different in terms of mood and phrasing. Garner did not know to read music, and he was famous about never repeating the performance of a given song; sometimes he played a same tune on a totally different key on consecutive nights, only because he didn't care about these. A truly instinctive genius.
Marcello Menta amazing!
how did his side men handle this?
That's part of the reason for Garner's extensive intros. That gave his sidemen time to figure out what he would play and in which key.
Yes and the bass player always stood above and over Erroll so he could watch his right hand and work out the key.
@@mrjimmienoone2130 Exactly
Named my little baby Laura after this song. The most beautiful song ever by the best Jazz master.. haven't seen her in about 40 years..... wish I could see her .
What else can I say? You just can't get any better!!
Una interpretación fabulosa de Erroll.
Hay pasión en cada compás que ejecuta.
Se escucha maravilloso.
This is just beautiful. Makes me smile every time.
Qué belleza y cuánta entrega de su arte... Erroll Garner es un genio
CAN SOMEONE PLEASE TELL HOW THE FUCK ARE THERE 9 DISLIKES.....Never mind I realized the good taste and class are things that some people will never acquire.
DISLIKES 15 now. I feel sorry for these people.

NOTHING SHORT OF GENIUS!!!!!
UNBELIEVABLY FANTASTIC BEYOND WORDS!!!!!
Lingers in the ear, whenever it is heard. If you are a fan of this sublime tune, be sure and check out another Raksin masterpiece: LOVE IS FOR THE VERY YOUNG...from "The Bad and the Beautiful" (Lana Turner, Kirk Douglas, Dick Powell..)
Fabulous!! This jazzy rendition is classic.
Otto Preminger wanted Duke Ellington's "Sophisticated Lady" to be the theme music for Laura. David Raskin, who was scoring the film, objected. Alfred Newman, director of music for Fox told Preminger to give Raskin the weekend to see what he could come up with. What a difference a weekend makes.
It is still so delicious, seductive, musical, that we have to celebrate the loving gift of Errol.
I can't believe I discovered this genius because of a Samsung commercial. Amazing musician.
This man is a genius.
Concordo com vc.
That's an awesome version of this, very orchestral and faithful to the mood of the original symphonic score.
Simply unforgettable My favorite jazzz pianist
The first jazz concert I ever saw my dad took me to see him. Boston Globe Jazz Festival 1966. George Duvivier, the great bassist based in Boston, played with him. B.B. King was the 2nd act-with Roy Haynes-another joy of Boston-on drums. Buddy Rich Big Band closed and did West Side Story by Leonard Bernstein-the Pride of Brookline-who my dad went to high school with. Wow! What a great introduction to jazz for an 11 year old. Thanks dad. RIP!

Quelle mécanique dans ce cerveau, une harmonie de note qui volent dans l’air et laisse un parfum de mélancolie
Comme un bouquet de fleurs.❤️
Thank you for posting. That was Divine! I'm stunned.
See below. I absolutely agree! Errol was a genius!!
Wow......hearing Mr. Garner makes me wanna burn my upright piano and learn to build brick walls........wow.....beautiful rendition of the song..!
Falling leaves decents anyone? Majestic.
I'll listen to Jazz over rap music any day. Black men were dignified back then. Unlike the thugs of this generation in the music industry.
I take it you haven't listened to Cory Henry? He's a phenomenal organist and a black man.
"Black men were dignified back then" ... You live in a bubble.
There are plenty of black musicians who perform music other than rap, and a reasonable percentage of them are dignified, about the same as musicians of any other race. John Legend is an easy example, and you might even like "All of Me", his signature tune. Kevin Olusola of Pentatonix is another easy example, as is the country musician Darius Rucker.
NycBeauty i always wonder what happened to american black progress since those times. blacks definitely do have superb natural talents and creativity, and in a way i feel america has let them down
NycBeauty. I hear you my sister but there are still a few of us left who hold. on to integrity and dignity! 🌹
just read that Errol died in 1977. Made me sad all over again.
😭😭😭
WHEN JOGGING, I LISTEN TO ERROL GARNER NO LEG POUNDING I FLOAT.
Big fan of this song, and now even a bigger fan of this rendition.... majestic
Laura Lyrics as sung by Ella Fitzgerald (in case you want to sing along)
Laura is the face in the misty lights
Footsteps that you hear down the hall
The laugh that floats on a summer night
That you can never quite recall
And you see Laura on the train that is passing through
Those eyes how familiar they seem
She gave your very first kiss to you
That was Laura but she's only a dream
And you…
erroll never played a song the same way twice. this is by far the best for this beautiful song
Nobody can be taught to play like this.Garner was born with a musical 6th sense.Maybe not as polished as Peterson but genius nevertheless.
yes, he was born with it
Be sure and watch him play "My Funny Valentine" which is pretty fabulous too.
Then again polish isn't what speaks to the soul.....=)
carl armstrong Much more expressive than Peterson
carl armstrong. LoveOscar Peterson too_ but there.s nobody who phrases like this man!
I'm in the jazz band in my school but I still feel like jazz is and always will be beyond my comprehension.
Lord have fuckin mercy. How good is the piano genuis.
C'eut été dommage qu'il fasse autre chose que de la musique ! Quel talent quand on sait qu'Errol ne savait même pas lire une note .
He couldn't read music? Uncroyable!
The jazz singer, Sara Dowling`s middle name is Laura, and her dad was a huge Garner fan, and was moved to tears when he heard him play. Sara does n`t know for sure if her middle name is because of this, but I think we can probably say "yes" can`t we?
Erroll can play the hell out of that piano, all the keys get attention 👍🏾
no puedo expresar con palabras,lo que experimento cuando escucho esta bella musica.,sumadol a la exquisita interpretacion del inolvidable erroll garner.
MUSICAL GENIUS LEFT US WAY TOO SOON
Yo lo bailaba de chica. Mis padres lo tenian. En honor a mi mama. Por eso me bautisaron igual.❤
I listen regularly to the talent of Mr Erroll Garner, each time I am in awe.
Beautiful rendition! Anyone knows if there exists a note by note piano transcription of Laura as performed by Erroll Garner? I saw different transcripts versions available online but THEY ARE WAY TOO SIMPLE and seem to be for beginners. They do not bring out the beauty of the song. Thanks in advance for any hints.
If you try by ear, that'll be your best bet 👍 hope this helps 😊
Thank God we have the recordings of these geniuses! No more composers like this and for sure no other ERROL GARNER!
Not only does he not look at the piano when he plays the notes he gets with one hand,is amazing and brilliant. Superb
seine Genialität und Kunst trifft mich mitten ins Herz. Es ist so wunderbar, dass ich dabei weinen muss - aus Dankbarkeit es zu hören!
No word could ever explain the ecstasy that provoked his immense talent.
When people ask me what jazz is I show them this
Also show them Bill Evans's My Foolish Heart
One of my favourite tunes played by a great jazz pianist what more could one ask. Thanks for uploading.
Like Salieri said of Mozart: "This wasn't just music: this was the voice of God."
Excellent. Lucky you had the public of the 40Ths. Society was... so different then. Pitty.
This piece is so powerful. It almost brings me to tears just how beautiful this is. Makes me want to write love poems.
