This is the the one song that both Cole Porter and Irving Berlin wished that they had written. That says it all about the quality of this song from two of the greatest composers of the last century. I love the film and the song (my beloved mom’s favorite). Miss you mom and dad.❤
Today that my mother no longer lives and that thanks to her and for this beautiful music I bear the name of Laura I value as never before every time my parents in any part of the world where I had the privilege of travel and there would be a piano that someone would play my parents requested that they play it for me ... there was not a single pianist who did not have it in his repertoire ... mother to heaven thank you for this gift which is my name and it has given me so much ... !!!!
My name is Laura and I have had an obsession with Vincent Price! I love this movie and I am watching it right now it’s on tv. LOVE the theme song! I remember as a kid my Mother had this song on an album and she would play it. I really didn’t appreciate the music as a kid but as I saw the movie later and thought about my Mom playing it, it’s a special memory! The whole cast was fantastic! ❤❤
For those who never seen this movie PLEASE be sure to watch it all the way to the end for the shocker. The melody is so haunting. And to watch Dana Andrews fall in love with the portrait of Laura adds a certain romance. It's one of those movies that every time it's on TMC (not often enough, for me) I watch it. Otto Preminger really outdid himself on this film. Bravo!
She died 30 years ago today. She was so pretty and such a wonderful actress. I think her looks got in the way for she has never been given her due as an actress. I can't see anyone playing Laura but her. When you look at her you can see why Waldo got bent out of shape at the thought of losing her to any other man, and why Mark(Dana Andrews) was so gone on her the moment she came though that door. There was no one like Laura! Thank you Gene Tierney for all Laura and all the films you left behind.
AGREED!!! I think "Stella By Starlight" by Victor Young would be a strong contender, however. I dearly love them BOTH. Can you imagine how boring our lives would be without the gift of music?? Merry Christmas!
It's fascinating. ALL the actors were on point and flawless. Clifton and Gene made the movie. Clifton was in Titanic with Barbara Stanwyck. I will watch as TCM showed it recently. Vincent Price also added a lot to the movie. This was before he became typecast in horror movies.
The main theme from 'Laura' with some stills from the movies, music composed by my teacher at UCLA David Raksin; who had a great influence on me, RIP David, you are sorely missed...Combined with elements of Maurice Ravel's 'Daphne et Chloe'....two master orchestrators combined in elegance in perpetuity.....with love, your student, Rhondda Nunes
What an honor to study with David Raksin! I have been similarly blessed to study with amazing French horn, Piano and Vocal coaches. Life has been good - and God willing and the creek don't rise - will continue to be. 🙂
I first saw him in a short lived but excellent soap about College Professors. He played the wise Dean. My mother told me he was one of her favorite leading men in films of her era, and now having seen many, I can see why.
Gene Tierney was, in my view, THE most beautiful woman ever to walk the face of this earth. That still of her at 1m.40s is simply stunning. It's impossible for me to hear this theme without thinking of her, and equally impossible to think of her without hearing this theme. What a combination. We can wait around, but I cannot believe we will ever see the likes of this again.
I'd have to put Hedy Lamar and Yvonne DeCarlo right along side of her. Look at Hedy in "Sampson & Delilah". Or Yvonne DeCarlo in "The Ten Commandments".
The melody is perfect, but don't let it blind you to the amazing Hollywood orchestration. The combo of high violins and celli sharing the melody in the beginning is superb.
Yes l hear Ravel in this theme. Always love Dana Andrews, every movie he made. Waited on Gene Tierney in Houston 1982 or 83. She was very poised and though not a tall woman, slim, yet statuesque. Also one of my absolute favorites. More than beautiful, a respected professional and versatile actress. She is so perfect in The Ghost and Mrs Muir. Every movie she made is a treat. Movies are never again going to reach the quality of those from their era. Not in this world. We miss you both. ✝️
I didn’t see this film until I was 20 or so & had never heard of Gene Tierney. But one look at those eyes & that face & I fell in love. The music & the movie still haunt me to this day & I just turned 71 in April. My first adult love was murdered and I know what it is to love someone forever.
I first saw this movie in 1977 at the age of 22 and was just so blown away and deeply moved by it (I was just a puddle in some scenes) - and the music was such a big part of it. I was so grateful when the score was recorded for commercial release not long after that (the recording cover is shown in this video). It's been a special part of my record collection since (and I was also grateful when it was released on CD).
Unbelievably gorgeous! What a beautiful musical piece! ❤ I've heard bits and pieces of it here and there throughout my life, but never did I ever heard the whole le piece, let alone knew the title! Thanks to Steven Hays and his old movies analysis, I added this piece to my repertoire! Thank you very much gents for making my quiet afternoon even more pensive and dreamy! 🌇
I grew up with this kind of music and the silver screen they were often scored for; as many who listen in probably did - still, I'm eternally grateful that I lived through those years ...
Why ANYONE would give a thumbs down to this is really sad. The other GREAT theme by Raksin is The Bad and the Beautiful. Simply stunning music. I often see Raksin spelled Raskin.
The late Joe Bushkin, US pianist, recorded this tune, composed by Raksin & Mercer for the 1944 film of the same name, on his LP Midnight Rhapsody in '56. I remember listening to this in the '60s as a teenager; for me this is my favourite version, great production. Have a listen
I think one of the most beautifull tunes of all time. A real classic and will still be around around for a 1000 years.. Real class never goes out of style....
I just finished writing a short story loosely based on this film's main female character (and Miss Gene Tierney out of character). I listened to Woody Herman and his orchestra ("Laura") as I penned the rough draft. Truly, this is one of Hollywood's best from the WWII era. I'd love to see this great film on the big screen, once more, before I leave this world.
This Ravel/Raskin mix is a stroke of pure genuis, as I think a few have already stated here. Pity this version's not commercially available. I'd purchase it at the drop of a hat...

Already done that. But thanks anyway. It's just the volume leveling on this recording could be a bit better. There are times it drops to a whisper, but then goes to the other extreme. Which is not a bad thing, but to me it seems to distort at the high end. Pity. This recording will have to do. It's one of a kind.
You know the feeling of something half remembered, of something that never happened, yet you recall it well. You know the feeling of recognizing someone that you've never met as far as you could tell, well. Laura is the face in the misty light, footsteps that you hear down the hall. The laugh that floats on a summer night that you can never quite recall. And you see Laura on the train that is passing thru. Those eyes, how familiar they seem. She gave your very first kiss to you. That was Laura but she's only a dream.

@@douglaslambert3133 Thank you for showing us this piece. I have never heard this! The version I played when searching, "Love Theme For Laura" was beautiful, and a little different instrumentation than I am used to with a Henry Mancini composition. Only in the first few notes was that little...flur...was that an accordian?
@@LauraShadle "Love Theme For Laura" appears on the CD titled "Brass, Ivory and Strings," the 2nd of two collaborations between Mancini and Doc Severinsen.
The song brings back the flavor of older days when the world was sweeter, uncomplicated, families stayed together no matter what, God was the foundation of most homes, the chance for self advancement was everywhere. Neighbors helped each other and didn't lock their doors. It is a world gone away, which was stylish, romantic, when men and women loved each other and the dance of romance was what made life sweet, unlike today when women hit the sheets on the first date. Bring me back to the days when the chrome on the cars was thick and the tires and fins on our fabulous fifties and sixties cars were as big as our dreams. That is the world I never wanted to leave. When I hear "Laura" it just brings it all back and I relive those golden times like the needle stuck in a record on an old record player, stuck in the same old groove, same old groove, same old.....
Your memory is very selective. There were many crappy things about the old days. Just off the top of my head, remember polio? Thousands and thousands of children struck down with that horrible disease. Now we have immunizations for that and other childhood killers. I could go on, but I hope you get my point.
@@davidhull1481 Not selective, but very accurate. You simply can not compare those days to this time. Liberals usually diss the fifties and sixties, those re-writers of history. Yes, we had polio but we also had the Salk vaccine which prevented it (until now, an upsurge due to mass "immigration"). Families WERE intact, life was fabulous, especially for kids and teens. No, we never locked our door, you could walk the streets without getting raped, life wasn't ugly as it is now. I hope you get my point.
@@bethvirginiaphillips4583 oh, I got your point all right. You have forgotten what life was like for people before vaccinations, before seat belts and air bags. A life of people who were different from your white privilege, how many people had to deny their sexuality. You are narrow minded, unable to imagine what life was like for others. Spare me your small minded nostalgia.
@@davidhull1481 My dear, you sound like a soy boy now. You obviously were not there in the good days when the chrome on the cars was thick, the music was fantastic and the men were straight. At any rate, it was a better world, alas, but I will never confuse you with the facts. Liberals just can't comprehend with their miniscule i.q.s...White privilege was what gave you away to the narrow minded liberal mentality you suffer from. You really believe this stuff, and I PRAY that you will one day think for yourself and break away from the communist mindset now underway under your new president, Beijing Joe Biden.
Bravo for a Magnificent Musical Score Laura!!!! Bravo for a Beautiful Actress Gene Tierny, those Eyes, those Lips, the Face!!!! Thanks a Million for Showing us a Beautiful Classic!!!!!!!
Saw the movie several months ago. It was probably my 3rd time watching it. I really enjoyed it as much as I did the first time. Which was years ago. The music was beautifully written as well as the lyrics. I loved it.
One of the most beautiful ballads in the world. This is my favorite of them all. Plus I know three Laura's in person and they are so ever perfect for this tune too.
Have anyone of you heard the refrain to this adorable song? The magic of the words and the beauty and mystery of the music are a perfect match. "You know the feeling of something half remembered, of something that never happened, yet you recall it well....You know the feeling of recognizing someone that you've never met as far as you can tell..."
Wow,Wow, what a long time ago i saw that movie and it seem to leave an impression on me,oh yeah,my friends wife who used to hum the theme Laura, some years later, long ago and far away.
Laura is one of my favorite movies; I watch it again and again. The theme song by David Raskin is incredibly beautiful and haunting; I had it on the music list for my wedding; Laura was the name of my beloved aunt. I know she is in Shemayim. I miss you, Aunt Laura (z"l)
An altogether amazing piece of music writing both music and lyrics. The lyrics alone are haunting and take you away into it's web then joined with the music incredible piece of music by Raskin.
The opening is a straight quote from "Daphnis and Chloe" by Maurice Ravel. Raksin's own melody emerges subtly from this opening. A beautiful piece of work by both composers!
I heard a story about this movie and how Mr Ruskin was still teaching and composing. I love the theme to Laura , but when I heard “The Good , the Bad , the Beautiful” , I cried😢. Laura was the better movie though.
Nice blending of the two pieces. I love that Gene was associated with three of the most beautiful film scores ever composed: Laura, The Razor's Edge and The Ghost and Mrs Muir.
What about the theme tune from Now Voyager Bette Davis playing out of her usual character and never did get the hero Paul Hendrid. The film showed everything in flashbacks however a wonderful film and score to match.
Hedy Lemar turned down the role of Laura. Thank goodness. I've seen all Hedy Lamar's movies and all of Gene Tierney's. Hedy just would not have done this movie justice. Gene was absolutely incredible.
Stupendous film, stupendous soundtrack (the originals), stupendous short movie and soundtrack in this presentation! Thx for the upload!... To combine Maurice Ravel's "Sunrise" with David Raksin's score in such a way is also a stroke of genius.
Ahhhh dated a piano bar player years ago in our 20's..used to request this every saturdaynite..broke up, life went on..but always told him, one night I will come back and put an anonymous request in...it's been 25 yrs live on 2 continents, was love...would love to do that someday 💞
A stunning film. Out of all the films I've watched, this is without a doubt one of the very best. Incredible writing and directing. Clifton Webb, in my opinion, portrays one of the most disgusting characters in cinematic history, and nails it to absolute perfection. To quote one of his lines ''It was a masterpiece''. :)
It is utter genius of you to combine Ravel and Raskin! both pieces do indeed have an affinity for each other--what a great creative idea!! Thank you so much!
Talk about a movie-for-your-ears... Gorgeous. Whose arrangement and performance, please? (And, if possible, point out to me by time-cue the Ravel stuff? Thanks.) Addenda, three years later: The Poster got the Ravel musical point-of-reference correct, but it's not "Daphne et Chloe;" it's the tone-poem "La Mer." I only recently found out that these profoundly bittersweet lyrics were written for this tune after the movie had made the theme such a hit, and that Johnny Mercer had not yet seen the film when he wrote them... ...and he nailed, remarkably, the essence of the film anyway: Laura is the face in the misty light Footsteps that you hear down the hall The laugh that floats on a summer night That you can never quite recall (And you see) Laura on the train that is passing through Those eyes, how familiar they seem She gave your very first kiss to you That was Laura but she's only a dream
Amazing, goosebump generating... Way before my time, but one of those classic tunes you've had to have heard at some time or another if you've ever been even remotely interested in the standards. Passionate and beautiful, way beyond anything that ever gets produced in this modern day. There's something very special about this recording/mix. I've been unsuccessful after spending several hours trying to find this precise version from another source. Can't find a listenable New York pops recording on the net, and something tells me it's not quite the same in any case. The problem I have with this one is the obvious volume leveling or saturation at the high points. It really spoils an otherwise perfect rendition...
This is terrific music! This particular arrangement is very special since the theme song is cleverly meshed with the classical tune "Levé du Jour" by Ravel.
David Raksin also wrote the music to The Big Combo (1955). A B-movie film noir, but nonetheless a classic. The opening title sequence of that film is worth the price of admission alone.
This is the the one song that both Cole Porter and Irving Berlin wished that they had written. That says it all about the quality of this song from two of the greatest composers of the last century. I love the film and the song (my beloved mom’s favorite). Miss you mom and dad.❤

@@davidhull1481 Ah, no era is perfect, but the fifties and sixties came pretty close to perfection, as perfect as humans can possibly get...
what a stroke of perceptive genius is that you combined both themes--!! wonderful--they seem connected emotionally.
Bravo for a Magnificent Musical Score Laura!!!! Bravo for a Beautiful Actress Gene Tierny, those Eyes, those Lips, the Face!!!! Thanks a Million for Showing us a Beautiful Classic!!!!!!!
One of the best film noir. Great cast
One of my favorite movies❤️ So many different versions of this
This was one of my father's favorite songs and one of the reasons I named my daughter Laura.
Same reason for my Dad, too!
One of My favorite film scores of all time! Exquisitely beautiful 👍
This theme has mystery & mystique woven into every note... One of my favorites of all time
Have anyone of you heard the refrain to this adorable song?
Do not, I repeat, do not listen to Spike Jone's version of this music! Preserve your sanity!
BillSU77 His name was RAKSIN
I fell in love with that picture and song when I was eight.
The opening is a straight quote from "Daphnis and Chloe" by Maurice Ravel. Raksin's own melody emerges subtly from this opening. A beautiful piece of work by both composers!
I heard a story about this movie and how Mr Ruskin was still teaching and composing. I love the theme to Laura , but when I heard “The Good , the Bad , the
Beautiful” , I cried😢. Laura was the better movie though.
Nice blending of the two pieces.
I love that Gene was associated with three of the most beautiful film scores ever composed: Laura, The Razor's Edge and The Ghost and Mrs Muir.
The DEFINITIVE arrangement of this legendary movie's theme ☄️☄️☄️
The music is so beautiful and the movie was wonderful. I have watched it so many times and never do I grow weary maybe it’s the music. 💕
A wonderfully intriguing film further enhanced by a memorable score by David Raksin.
May daughter LAURA Denise was named after this song & film.
One of the most luscious film theme songs of all times, even better than the film itself!
I hope that date went well. My fiancée is named Laura and I love her very much.
Not so well for me. But I send you the best of wishes in the hopes it leads to a happy marriage! @@stumatthews8677
Music that touches the soul
Beautiful job. Thank you. Tremendous movie. Johnny Mercer managed to write a great lyric for the song later on.
Ahhhh dated a piano bar player years ago in our 20's..used to request this every saturdaynite..broke up, life went on..but always told him, one night I will come back and put an anonymous request in...it's been 25 yrs live on 2 continents, was love...would love to do that someday 💞
"There are elements of Maurice Ravel's 'Daphne et Chloe' in this" - you got that right!
Gourgeous theme. Sumptuous orchestration.
Bravo to David Raksin.
I didn’t know Ravel composed this ;)
A stunning film. :)
Disgusting but elegant. Like a poisonous martini.
It is utter genius of you to combine Ravel and Raskin! both pieces do indeed have an affinity for each other--what a great creative idea!! Thank you so much!
This song has haunted me since childhood. It has never changed.
I've dedicated this song to my paternal grandmother Laura Farr on Facebook her birthday November 17 1892
Wow....What a beautiful filmtheme and score!
Thank you so much! The strings in this piece are absolutely amazing! One of my favorites!
Nadie debería irse de este mundo sin haber escuchado este tema maravilloso, gracias Raksin.
Talk about a movie-for-your-ears...
Gorgeous.
Whose arrangement and performance, please?
(And, if possible, point out to me by time-cue the Ravel stuff? Thanks.)
Addenda, three years later:
The Poster got the Ravel musical point-of-reference correct, but it's not "Daphne et Chloe;" it's the tone-poem "La Mer."
I only recently found out that these profoundly bittersweet lyrics were written for this tune after the movie had made the theme such a hit, and that Johnny Mercer had not yet seen the film when he wrote them...
...and he nailed, remarkably, the essence of the film anyway:
Laura is the face in the misty light
Footsteps that you hear down the hall
The laugh that floats on a summer night
That you can never quite recall
(And you see)
Laura on the train that is passing through
Those eyes, how familiar they seem
She gave your very first kiss to you
That was Laura but she's only a dream
One of the finest films and scores ever!
Yes .. You are correct .. This amongst other great soundtracks of yesteryear are above & beyond the trash that passes as music in today's world.
Absolutely beautiful job here. This music never sounded better, and it's a very apt mix. Bravo!
Hauntingly beautiful song.
Nothing can be added to genius !
