My mother took me to see the movie when it first came out. I remember it like it was yesterday. I fell in love with Jennifer O'Neil that night at the age of 12 in 1971' (I think it was 71'). Many years later while working as a chauffeur in Dallas/Ft Worth area, I was privileged to have Jennifer as a client one afternoon, just for a one way transfer from the airport. I was so star stuck I literally couldn't get enough moisture in my mouths to speak. That was in the early 90's. Still love her to this day! 💕❗️
With extreme respect and with nothing but honor, Jennifer O'Neil, You're still my favorite actress of all time and you're still a very beautiful person inside and out! Also, thank you for the gracious tip that day! Know you are loved no matter what!

There is profound sadness when I listen to this piece of music. It reminds me of my youth, lots of carelessness, in taking things for granted, of loves lost and endless rush to do things...none of which, when I think of it, really mattered....in the end. I am leaving the 50s behind this year and am the sadder for it. But, the music also hints at hope...and, as Frost said it best, "I have miles to go before I sleep...". Thanks for the posting..

We all had our Summer of '42. Mine was when I was a 20-yr old college student and she was a 42 yr old English professor from Harvard Univ....not my school. I met her at a faculty party where I was working, serving wine. I'm 62 now and she's likely long gone. Her name was Jacqueline and she looked very much like the much loved Jacqueline Kennedy.

This film was dear to my heart. I had it on VHS in the 70s and I used to watch it alone whenever I needed something to take me to my special world. You know things such as love, summer time, sea side resorts and being a teenager mean a great deal . And the story, Jennifer O'Neill, and the music cemented the rest of it. You see there are certain feelings that are extremely hard to put into words.

I know what you mean about it taking you to a special world. It does the same for me and I've watched it many times just for the atmosphere it brings to me when I need some escapism. I think it probably does that for a lot of people who are fans of it. There was so much attention to detail in the set design, I think that was part of it, you really feel drawn into it. Whatever they used to film it, it was beautifully filmed, so easy on the eyes, like you're in a dream.

Funny coming to listen to this and, similarly, my mother was a pianist and violinist. I was a dancer and loved this music so much I bought the sheet music. Mum would play it for me and I'd watch her fingers miraculously flying across the keys. I never saw the movie until much later and although some people were offended, I thought it was probably fairly realistic for the time frame of 1942. Thanks (from Australia).

A beautiful actress, beautiful music and a beautiful movie.
My story took more than one summer. It was the summer of 1977. I was 16 when I met Penny, she was 30. We eventually worked together as EMT/Paramedic partners on the ambulance for many years (decades).
We were a great team on and off duty, building a successful life together. I knew Penny for 43 wonderful years. We lived together for 30 years, married 15 of them (I was her second husband).
Unfortunately she passed away suddenly in 2020. I can tell you they don't make women like Penny anymore.
I love and miss you my wonderful, wife.
    But life goes on.

I grew up in the greater San Antonio area. This theme and movie started making financial and critical waves in the late spring of 1972, both were very popular. One of the two most popular San Antonio AM stations (it was either KTSA or KONO) would do all their time checks as an homage to this movie by saying “KONO Summer of ‘72 time is 4:10”. I remember hearing that while sunbathing in my backyard or hanging around at the pool with the rest of my friends. I knew that it was special and would always know it would be special. Like 40 years later I’d think about that and feel nostalgic. I was right.
We’d be 8th graders that fall. What an incredibly special time to be young and alive and ridiculously in love. Sigh.....

My favorite movie theme. When it was released in 1971, I was the same age as Hermie, so could easily identify with him. Forty-two years have come and gone since this film affected me. College, jobs, family. I had a book published, worked in the theatre, and retired after a long career. No single film or theme has ever had such a profound effect as this movie. In addition I say that American movies, pop culture, music and themes today are nearly all absolute junk. How sad what it is now.

While I enjoy science fiction, I abhor movies which rely on computer generated images, which almost every modern movie has. I prefer movies with human drama. When I first saw this movie I sat looking at the screen hypnotized both by the story the writer was telling, Jenniffer O'Neill's beauty and the incredible music of Michele Legrand. The orchestration of the main theme is gorgeous - pulling you into and through this summer and the emotion of the characters, anxiety, joy, anger, loss, and yet leaving us with a sense of hope. The piano in it's initial runs and through the piece is magnificent as is the playing of the members this orchestra. Amazing.

I always feel like my soul belongs to these times even though i was born in the spring of '97. When i was 10 or 11 i always secretly stole the book "Summer of '42" ("En Tatlı Yaz" in Turkish) from my mom's bookcase (secretly because the cover was a little too much improper for my age, there were some sketches of a naked woman) and then i put it back after reading a couple of pages. I used to get so excited when i picture the characters in my mind and feel the love that Hermie feels as i turned the pages. About ten years later i suddenly recalled this book, but i couldn't find it anywhere so i ordered one and read it twice. Then i found out that there's a movie based on this book.
When i first watched it.. it was like a dream, i thought all the cast fit perfectly to their roles, the soundtrack, atmosphere and lines were beyond perfect. Maybe that's the reason why this movie always fills my heart with nostalgia and the bitter excitement of pure, impossible love.

When you are old and grey and full of sleep,
and nodding by the fire, take down this book,
And slowly read and dream of the soft look.
Your eyes had once and of their shadows deep.
How many loved your moments of glad grace.
And loved your beauty with love ,false or true.
But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you.
And loved the sorrow of your changing face,
And bending down beside the glowing bars.
Murmur a little sadly. How love fled,
And paced upon the mountains overhead,
And hid his face amid a crowd of stars.

He developed a mature character after that summer . I think everyone of us fell in love with another person that we couldn't be with anyway. Our lives are in stages . Hermie just happened to have a great summer that year. Probably the best summer he will ever have outside of his first year of marriage maybe.

a beautiful theme song, filled with a deep longing, and deep sorrow that fit this movie perfectly. a story of a young teenage boy, just barely 15 or 16 years old, and a young married, and lonely woman, her husband gone to battle in WW2, like hundreds of thousands of young men from the USA had, and he would never return. when she learns of her husbands death, her crushed hope, grief, utter despair, and loneliness causes her to seek some kind of consolation in bedding this eager and willing boy, and then she leaves town, without a goodbye.
when I first saw this masterpiece, I was 17, and I was quite surprised by the fact that the movie actually "went there", with the young woman, and the teenage boy. this was considered a bit scandalous at that time, at least in Roman Catholic circles. but as I got older, and experienced my own heartbreaks and deep despair, I understood this story completely. the human heart is confused and tortured at times like this. And whose to say that there was anything scandalous about her actions? her husband had been killed in battle, and the teenage boy certainly didn't regret his encounter with her.

Buddy, you hit it right on the head. In today's society, everything is about blatant, gratuitous sex and violence. But when something like the Summer of 42 comes along, people attempt to categorize it as "adult hot for young person". They miss the point. Love can hit anywhere and any time. And as wonderful as love is, it sometimes steals innocence away. But it's beautiful in it's own way.

Robert Mulligan has captured the essence of the story of Hermie very precisely. He often lets the faces speak and you know everything. He made it awesome. Today's films consist mostly only of dialogues! Not here! Also that the haunting music stops with the record and you then only hear the scratching and then the waves of the sea ... the absence of the music of Legrand and this effect! And Gary Grimes, what a great actor. It always touches me to see him and Jennifer O'Neill. The movie has a great magic ...What else is there to say? Coffee is exquisite. Exquisite. Laughter becomes you!
