One of your best videos to date imho. I was able to LIKE it after only ten minutes. Entertaining, informative and full of good humour from start to finish.
shrines is related to TOKUGAWA(Shougun at Edo era) families. you can see KAMON(family crest) on everywhere in shrines, one of it on hose sculpture with gold color medal.
08:48 Was a Japanese four-lined ratsnake! He’s non-venomous and pretty cool unless you’re an egg or a small creature like a rat or frog. Eric was totally right on that size determination! They grow to be about 1-1.5 meters!
didn't know y'all were doing a camera fund. been watching forever, & the content is always fun & informative, so i think i'll donate what i can. *_side note_* : great choice on the camera & the lens. i'm a longtime professional photographer, & after being w/ *Canon* for +10 years, i made the switch to *Sony* a couple of years ago. i've seen so many other professionals (media/journalists/etc.) make that switch to *Sony* as well. the learning curve does take some time, but i think *Sony* made things a bit easier w/ their new menu system on that camera.
Yea, they are just in a new league with the A7Siii. For so long their "pro" level gear has messed up a critical aspect for us, but they finally nailed everything, it seems. Stoked to get it and learn their system. -E
Okay, if I hadn't wanted to go to Fukui after the last one, I definitely do now. Dino museum and dragon shrine? Freaking awesome. Love this, you guys seem to be having a lot of fun and it's good to see! Gonna have to chip in for the camera fund when I start getting some money coming in!
Fukui is thought as "the countryside" in Japan, I myself have never been there... But your videos are so exciting to look into the hidden gems of Japan! Thank you!
8:15, i hade to check on Green Jelly, "The Bear song", the style sounded familier, looked up there repertoire and BINGO, "Three little pigs" That song i have heard before.
The squeals I gave when I saw Totoro cat us and my fav you tubers. This was really fun to watch, the countryside is beautiful and the dinosaur museum seemed really cool!
Hey, great vid, now I need to go to the museum (whenever the US can go international again...). Been a while since I've watched you guys, I like the bloopers between scenes
Bell or music/sound is, so the bears don't get startled when you approach to where they are. Bears usually attack because they feel in danger, or that you are putting their cubs in danger.
Your vids are ace. We are in lock down in Melbourne so love your visions we went to Fukui and went to the dinosaur museum. Fantastic loved every minute especially the train ride there.
Kyde and Eric, I just donated $20 to the camera fund, sorry I can't donate any more. You do great work that is informative, educational, and fun. A tip I learned is to shoot at the highest resolution, in this case 4k, and then render down to 1080p for the upload. Paolo de Guzman at Paolo from Tokyo just got a new setup you might want to check out in his latest vid, especially his storage drives. I watch from Eastern Time in the US (I am not a morning person, though) so we are 13 hours behind you. Your solicitation is in no way off-putting.
Thanks John! Trouble with filming in 4K is the amount of filming we do (hours each day) can get out of hand with how much data that gets created on trips that can be weeks long. We will be filming in 4K eventually, but there are other improvements I'm going to focus on first. Glad you are enjoying the videos! -E
*Paolo's* setup is basically the *Canon R* w/c is an OK camera. the lenses are what's really amazing, especially the 24mm-70mm f/2.0 (but that might not be good for blogging videos) - but they're crazy expensive. i was thinking about switching to the *Canon R* when it 1st came out, but I didn't b/c it had some *major* issues : - cropped 4k video (not ideal for vlogging. take what you see in this video, zoom in 1.5x & that's what you'll get. not good) - no IBIS (in body image stabilization) - many people consider the Eye AF (auto focus) to be "dodgy" at best (especially when compared to the cheapest *Sony* available) - only 1 memory card slot (nearly *all* cameras these days have 2 so one can be for emergency backup) *_kinda related_* : *Canon* recently put out the R5 & R6, w/c everyone said would get them competing w/ *Sony* in the mirrorless camera battles; *HOWEVER* , it was recently discovered that the cameras were overheating in video mode, & *Canon* did this on purpose (artificial throttling). Needless to say, many people are upset & lost trust in the company.
Over halfway there for the new gear! Contributed what I could. Good luck with it! P.S. I'm showing this to a friend of mine to try to convince her to come to Japan with me...obsessed with Dinos
@ 17:38 Hope this finds you well. Eric you might be having a gluten malabsorption. If you haven't already gotten yourself looked by a doc I would suggest you do so. It's not emergent but you could possible be starting with celiac.
On holiday last year in Canada we came across several Japanese tourists in Banff and Jasper National Parks wearing bells allegedly to to ward off bears. The guides told us that locally these are known as "dinner bells" as they simply advise the grizzlies of the approach of snack sized humans ...!
ねずみもち from wikipedia- " The fruit is an oval drupe, 10 mm long, ripening purple-black with a glaucous waxy bloom in early winter; in Japan they are popularly likened to mouse or rat droppings."
If you're having digestive issues that are messing with your game, you should get it checked out. Could be something that can be fixed like an H. pylori infection... which is more common than folks think since it can be very subtle in effect. It messes with the pH in your stomach.
How hard/expensive/mendokusai is it to get a driver's license in Japan? I've been here 5 years now and I'm starting to wish I could rent a car sometimes.
This video was real Uh La La Esque! Lol good video! Like the Dino Museum. I recently just bought a full Utah Raptor Skeleton! Super legit awesome. You should make your "Contribute Button" a slight bit larger IMO! Where I'm at tends to differ, but typically the U.S.
kyde & eric Yeah! The discoverer found the body skeleton of a brachiosaurus and the skull of an apatosaurus and thought he discovered a new Dino! So the original discovery was a fluke. However, recent discoveries may mean the brontosaurus existed. At the moment, it’s all a technicality lol. Edit: it’s been a debatable discovery for a while now, upon recent research (I’ve not done my homework in recent years apparently), a lot of scientific discovery points in the direction that the species existed, although it’s not the same depicted in movies and the like. It’s more a retroactive discovery if that makes sense. Apologies for the misinformation on that part.
Another interesting fact relative to dinosaurs that really puts things into perspective: blue whales are larger than the dinosaurs. There is some controversy regarding a certain species of sauropod possibly being bigger, but for the most part, even brachiosaurus was smaller than an adult blue whale.
kyde & eric petition to change the unit of measure for blue whales length from meters to how many Eric’s long they are? Actually....... blue whales are around 20-30 meters, Eric = roughly 6’10” if memory serves me correctly, soo circa 2 meters? Adult sized blue whale, Egh about 12.5-15 Eric’s long depending. Where’s the movie Friday’s “Dayummm” scene when you need it.
E: "It is really striking". Striking indeed. So where is it? It is a bit annoying when you show us a place that we'd want to add to the list for the next Japan expedition, and then give us no reference whatsoever (other than the prefecture it is on, in this case) as to where it is. I had to do some sleuthing to find that it was the Okamoto Otaki Shrine in Echizen. (...) Now that I got that off my chest, thanks for showing us a beautiful and definitely undervalued part of the country 🙏
I think you might be underestimating the amount of time it would take to reverse engineer our entire trip weeks after its over and then post a detailed map for people in addition to making all the videos available for everyone's enjoyment. Also, if you just asked and included a timestamp to what you were curious of I may have been able to look specifically for that thing. Glad you were able to "get that off your chest" though. -Eric

That shrine reminded me of your visit to Skipton castle in England. No build-up, ancient, empty, no merchandising and .. delightful :)

I love soba!
I love all the green moss in that shrine. Thanks for showing us the hidden bits of japan while we all chill at home. :)
