Thank You !! We vacationed to Orkney (and Shetland) in the very early 2000's. There was virtually no internet back then so we based the entire trip on 3 lines of text in a hard copy travel guide that dedicated an entire 3 paragraphs to the Highlands and Islands. This was easily the most memorable vacation of my life and we loved every second. We never got off the Mainland, but enjoyed so many spectacular hiking locations in the mid-summer light - forcing ourselves to end hikes 1:00AM to get some kip, and listening to the sheep all "night". I would so love to return....
A few years back, my wife and I spent a week bicycling around Mainland, Hoy, Rousay and Westray, we loved it and highly recommend Orkney for all those interested in archaeology and nature. It is a treasure.
My maternal grandfather came from Orkney at the beginning of the last century. Thanks to the on-line site Rousay Roots, I can trace that part of my family back to my 5th great-grandfather Magnus.
I was brought up in the most beautiful of all the Orkney islands...Westray...not called "Queen of the Orkney isles " for nothing. This film doesn't do it justice at all. Wonderful place to live. ❤
I visited Papa Westray in the early 90's with my late wife and stayed with her sister and husband who lived and worked on the island, my wife's sister, Fiona, was District Nurse at that time. It is a beautiful place with wonderful scenery and a rich and historic culture. I have been longing to return for many years, perhaps someday soon.
Highly recommend a few days in the Orkney Islands. We drove up from Inverness, stopping at sights to and from, but our ancient archaeological appetites feasted in Orkney!
I'm told this is where my ancestors come from. I've never been there. The old stone houses are amazing to see and the thought that my ancestors may have lived in them is beyond imagination.
I always thought I was Irish and South West Scottish but GEDmatch gave me Orcadian as my #1 closest ethnic group! I had no idea, now I'm on a quest to learn as much as I can.
My family surname is Louttit. My great-great grandfather (all the way up the patrilinial line) came from these Orkney Islands (I don't know exact details). Not sure if his name either, but he came with the HBC. There's a spiral-bound book titled The Louttit Saga; I pray to G-d that I can find it in storage!
Almost forgot, this man came with the HBC in the mid to late 1800's and worked and settled in James Bay, in the Ontario coast of James Bay. His descendants are Cree indigenous people, including myself (I reside in Ontario) 😊✌️☮️
@@RohenKapur interesting the only problem was the weather very dull low clouds most of the time so I couldn't get the photos I wanted but we can't control the weather so I will have to go again
Don't believe the hype, Orkney is rapidly becoming a giant chavy council estate island (i was brought up in one so thats factual and not snobbish) , in a couple of decades it'll be like a mad max scene...be careful whilst travelling there. Rousey is nice though...
There needs to be something in your heart before you go; because if not, - even the most devoted and hard-bitten scientist will burn their last candle long before they had any business being there.
Best holiday ever!but why mention the Norse invaders who were in the islands for only six hundred years what a out its pictish or neolithic heritage that were there for thousands of years like the rest of Scotland! Fair braw though veldig braa !
The stone of Setter "Probably the finest pre-historic stone in Orkney", dated to the Neolithic period which ended around 6500 years ago, PRE-DATING ADAM AND EVE, is that at all possible for a young-earth creationist baptist to accept, Cameron?
Thank You !!

Lovely photography - It is great to hear how people love to visit - It is great to be an Orcadian - I'm one of these lucky ones.

Sounds like a lovely holiday, Jeffery, glad you enjoyed it. Although we don't fancy some of the hills in Hoy or Rousay on a bike...!
One of my great-great grandfathers immigrated to Canada from here, just before 1800. I wish to explore this branch of my bloodline someday.
I'm making a 30 minute long video about orkney soon and I hope you get to visit orkney in your life
Same here . Maybe we are related. Immigrated to Vancouver
I visited Orkney in 1963 and 64 and spend lovely days with Mr & Mrs Spence of Kirkwall. I''ll never forget the kindness or the Orkney Islanders!

We did indeed, without many problems at all, thankfully!
Top class.
Wow good video
Can’t wait to visit
How’s the weather in March? As I would like to catch the northern lights
Can u travel to all of these little islands by car?
Most of the, yes. Check out the Orkney Ferries website for more info :)
Music is sooo loud on this video, when it’s played it drowns out the narrator
The Orkney accent sounds like an American trying to do a Scottish accent.
😂
so my dna test says my ancestors were from orkney, id love to find out more about it
That's good to hear, John! Try the Orkney Family History Society website to start your journey - www.orkneyfhs.co.uk

Pretty sure that the narrator gradually transforms into Sean Connery as the video progresses.

Omg-ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ
Hi what does that translate to? I looked up both the Cree and Inuktitut syllabics charts 😀
Narrator sound like a Malayali

And what about South Ronaldsay? 😠😠
Interesting to think this still could be Norwegian today
The accent sounds like a Franconian tries to speak English.
