I know, and so was ultimecia, the game's true antagonist whom we only got to know near the end of the game, which in my opinion is a grave mistake when in comes to creating a villain. In fact so many things in this game just feel rushed. I'm sure the developers didn't get as much time as they wanted to develop this game, because once again, things being shoehorned into the last act of the game is a clear sign.

The Dollet comms tower you imply to use cables, but it *is* wireless; it predates the blackout; Galbadia needs it because it appears to be the only wireless broadcast facility still around and they want to make that announcement. The Lunatic Pandora also didn't appear to be capable of causing a Lunar Cry merely by aligning with the Moon (most of the time) - it seemed to need a location (such as the structure at Tears Point) that could amplify the signal. It's implied a similar location once existed on the Centra continent and that's how the civilisation there got wiped out, when *they* experimented with the Crystal Pillar.
This game was so much deeper than it originally appeared. One of the rare RPGs that was genuinely worth a second playthrough for story rather than just kicking ass
I love FF8 so much. It will always have a place in my heart along with FF10. Words would not be able to describe the happiness I would feel if Final Fantasy 8 does get a Remake.

In the options menu there is a section dedicated to the world, I often picked a place with nice music and the read because I really enjoyed learning more. Many Ohhh, that's why moments.
I always thought the story of this game was interesting. The Lunatic Pandora, Lunar Cry, etc. are all really cool story elements for me. I also liked how the story is basically a love story. But I wish they explained the lore a lot more.
Ive played the game twice, once as a teen, again as an adult. Its hard to juggle all the complex story plots in this game. There is time compression, Adell's Backstory, The whole Laguna Subplot, The Garden attack/history subplot, etc. etc. Its easy to get lost with the way everything is presented in the game.
Okay serious question. Even in this video, when he's talking about how nothing is wireless and requires cables, what is the point of a "communications tower" then? Why does the tower literally have a dish on it? Why these massive, beautiful, complex animations of the tower opening a communications dish? Are those just decorations, and the real communications are through the cable that has nothing to do with the big dish? The animation literally shows that dish shooting out this massive beam of visible energy. I mean, that's . . . wireless communication, isn't it?
shadmere I don't remember anything about communications being blocked...I also played to the Lunatic Pandora, which was like the least 1/6 of the game or so, and I didn't know anything about time compression/sorceresses.
@@shadmere Before Adel's Tomb was sent into space, wireless communications were commonplace, hence the tower. Only after the Tomb was sent into space did the wireless jamming happen, rendering the tower useless. Before the Tomb falls, you can still make very short broadcasts, like in Timber, but nothing more which is why people opted for wired communication via HD cables.
That makes sense! I am okay with wireless communication being harder, but everyone talking about how it was IMPOSSIBLE seems to go against things we literally see happen. Thanks!
Awwwwww man! The nostalgia! It's a long time since I played FF8! It was my first ever FF game! What a great video Pez! I agree Adel and her motivations are a really interesting facet of the overall story - I can remember being quite fascinated at the time. The one thing that really blew my mind with this video (that I didn't know before) was the secret messages on the TV screen in Timber!!! I totally had no idea they were there! So thanks!! :)
This only continues to prove that most haters of VIII -- and heck, probably even some actual fans -- did _not_ pay attention the story while playing. Some people said they gave up when they found out about the Junction System, and others have even said they literally sped through the cutscenes to get back to game-play. WTF?! FFVIII is so terribly overlooked and that sucks because it is an amazing game in its own right. Thanks for this video. Maybe it will encourage people to think about the plot a little more and realize they should have paid better attention.
My biggest problem with it was too many implications and not enough answers. That _did_ feel lazy to me. Otherwise, despite the problems in the game, I can overlook them and enjoy it as my favorite Final Fantasy title. But seriously...did Katano really say that?
Well, I wanted to read the Ultimania, but don't know where to find it. And people only hate it because they feel it's not fleshed out enough, but that's entirely the fault of the editors and/or writers. But hopefully, with Katano's words, they will do _just_ that should they remake the game and makes it 10x better. I really hope that if they do remake VIII, they actually _remake_ it -- not just leave us the half-assed story and focus on game-play elements. We need questions answered and actual build-up to the plot twists.
If it's the second option, then at least it's possible for it to _not_ happen. But then you have to wonder which ending is canon... But still, even if it is a remake -- you don't completely change the story itself; you just change events that happen in the story while still keeping the plot the same. If Squall dies...the whole game is pointless because none of it would have happened anyway. *facepalm* Still, this almost makes me _not_ want an VIII remake. If his intention was to deter demand for it, then I just wonder why? Does he not like the game? That's still a stupid, and somewhat selfish, reason.

Opinions. Took a bit of time to develop but I found it more interesting than the overused 'love at first sight', the childhood girlfriend or the perfect relationship since the beginning, now that's unrealistic, plus game really suffered from bad translation and being rushed.
I thought that at first too, but you actually have to dive into lore and theories (with proof)for it to make sense. Like I theorize (with proof) that Rinoa is actually a young Ultimecia and that ultimicia traveled back in time to try to fix the broken relationship she had with Squall. I Also think that Squall is the griever summon and that he may have been Utimecias personal summon or GF.

What I always suspected about Sorceresses is that the stronger, and the more of Hyne's power, they have within them the more they look like him. Especially after having his power for a long time. Common traits pop up among the strongest sorceresses: horns/hair resembling horns, tattoos, wings, and a muscular frame/busty torso. Especially the horns and wings. So maybe Adel just looks the closest to Hyne because she had a lot of the power for a long time. Resulting in pecs.
Played this game through five times. I never get tired of it. The story and music are masterpieces. I never understood why so many people didn't like it. Also has great graphics for a PS1 game. Square says they're thinking of remaking it after they finish remaking vii. I really hope they do.
Played this game 18 years ago, it was not only the first Final Fantasy I ever played, but also the first RPG I ever played. Enjoyed the game mechanics but didn't pay enough attention to the story. Thank you for bring all these details up, making me recall bits and pieces of those remote memories.

I never knew there was so much story about Adel! I always thought of her as the dude you fight early on in the game and forget about. Didn't even notice the lack of wireless communication. I was a young kid back then so maybe it was all to subtle for me to notice.
The thing is, every and only the women in this world have the potential to become a Sorceress: One way is to born as one ('Hyne' a.k.a the God of this world passed his power only on the female population), but not everyone develops powers, just a few ones, another way it's if another Sorceress pass her powers into them. Another thing is, that 'berserk transformation/state' only Adel and Ultimecia have it's unique to them, it's triggered by some kind of tragedy, but then again not every Sorceress can achieve it, just a few of 'em.
Another interesting tidbit, Ellone it's not considered a Sorceress even then she possess some strange powers (thanks to her Dr. Odine developed the Junction Machine), that allowed well Junctioning. Only females with elemental/non-elemental magic are considered Sorceress.
I thought only certain female individuals could receive sorceress powers. Why does Edea pass her powers to Rinoa but not Quistis or Shelfie? Why does Ultimecia have to find Edea to pass her powers on before her death instead of doing that to a random person?
edea passes to rinoa because rinoa was dumb enough to get up in edeas business canonically. ultimicia wasn't looking for edea. her hatred of garden, of seed, subconsciously had her relentlessly trail the protagonists. because they all were from the same orphanage and because rinoa and squall said they'd meet there and because ultimecia did time compression, ultimicia ends up there. edea is the one who forces the power transfer in fear someone else will get it.

RogueSeraph not all dlc "should" be in the game. obviously dlc in ff15 and destiny should've been put in thegame and finished on time. but most dlc should not be in the initial release. you get what you pay for. you want more content? you buy it
Jordan Hendricks Yes, but I was talking about Final Fantasy only. The games are famous for having long complex storylines with no DLC. It doesn't matter whether the DLC is free or not, in the case of Final Fantasy there should not be any and all story content should be in the game. The many weaves and turns of the stories are what makes them interesting as they take you towards the climax, but no one small vignette from the story is interesting in itself. It is much too late after the story is finished, I no longer care.
an interesting note about the wireless interference... not only is it caused by adel's tomb, it's caused by adel herself. If you look at the interference pattern on the massive wireless screen that the president initially broadcasts on early in the game, you'll notice its a mass of red scrambled looking letters... Except its not scrambled at all. It says "I'll never let you forget about me. Bring me back there, I am alive here." This is the signal that is drowning out all other wireless radio communication (with the exception of the Dollet tower which is pretty obviously one helluva signal amplifier). Adel's quiet rage is what has killed radio communications, and she is broadcasting it worldwide from the vantage of her satellite tomb. Its impossible to know if it would be such a problem if she was less powerful or if the satellite were still grounded... as both of those may be contributing to the strength and range of the signal. Its also worth noting that wireless communication was... kind of not really a big thing in '98 when FF8 was released. Cellphones were still fairly large, had bad range, were expensive as fuck... Granted there was broadcast television, but for the most part everyone wanted cable because it was such a sketchy technology. As a younger me, playing FF8, I never understood why anyone would make a big deal about not having wireless communication... the internet was already a wires only affair (when it even worked if at all)... the phone system was all cables. Even wireless handsets were pretty uncommon, and they only had to work over about 15 feet. (they usually didn't). FF8 for all its fantasy and all its scifi, was really kind of similar in its limitations to the real world at the time it was released. In a lot of ways the FF8 world is weirdly advanced in some things, and sort of behind the times in others that way.
I actually thought the same thing as the OP. I know it sold well, and VIII seems to have gotten a lot more love in just the past year. Maybe the haters are just so vocal it _seems_ less popular than it actually is?
That may be it. I loved the game personally but had always sensed that it wasn't as well liked as other FF titles. Not sure if it was because of the setting or junction magic, which I thought was genius, but it just seemed like the game was swept under the rug and not spoken about much. That's only what I perceived though.
Well, apparently Squall is very popular and he _is_ constantly seen alongside Cloud -- Dissidia, Kingdom Hearts, World of Final Fantasy... I think games and characters are _much_ better received in Japan than anywhere else. Squall is immensely popular over there and it seems to have a fair-sized fanbase, even globally. I think the love for VIII has just been terribly overshadowed by the love for VII, which the majority of VII fans really do seem to hate every other installment -- from my experience anyway. They _are_ the most vocal fanbase of the entire FF fanbase.
Indeed, I was absolutely referring to western gamers. I am not ashamed to admit that I'm a FFVII fanboy. It was the first titled I played back in my golden years and it holds a special place in my heart but it but never has that tainted my views on the other main line titles. From FFI to FFXV and every other title in between has had something that has appealed to me. Whether it be the story or the mechanics, you name it. I've loved each game equally as if they were my children lol.
So yeah I like this perspective and video. FF8 is the most misleading game in the series and this creates engagement for me that other games can't. More FF8 please. Very good video.
Ff8 is by far my favourite game, been having the itch to play it again recently lol, if i can get roses and wine to work again... Seriously one of the richest worlds, I would pay all the monies for a full remake of it, expending on things like the deep sea research station, even adding to the lore of hyne and things like that. Beyond just that, seeing all the creative places and designs of objects in today's graphics would be amazing. And they could refine the junction system, I would hope it wouldn't be an action rpg tbh, the junction system has so much potential to be one of their best combat systems with 20 years of hind sight to feed it >.
GilbertGuilford uhm actually junction function is hated due to it makes magics and summons irrelevant. You can try to do magic build or GF build but that's really not gonna get you anywhere especially since everytime you cast magic, you gonna get weaker if you junction the said magic. The limitation is what makes Junction system too one dimensional as everyone will just spam LB with Aura and kills everything. LB in this game is so absurdly strong that it outweighs everything else the game provides. Don't get me wrong, this is still my favourite Final Fantasy because of the story, ost, and world building, it's just I wish there's more variation than spam Limit Break on every bosses
If every spell you have is junctioned, then you're doing something wrong - and even if you do cast a spell that is junctioned, rather than one you have spare, the stat drop is minimal - and a lot of the time you can draw-cast useful spells without even touching your stock... You don't want to spam junctioned spells, sure, but you can get a long way with a careful build and selective use of magic. Though, yeah, limit-spam is broken, and the clear strategy for anyone who just wants to win...
FFVIII is still my favorite, hands down. Ever since I was like 8 or something, I always hoped in the future I'd see an updated version of it. I'm still holding out for it.

2:50 STOP RIGHT THERE. the SeeD Exam mission in Dollet was to clear the city of galbadian forces,not to take out the Communication Tower, that wasn't even activated yet. no one knew Galbadia was after the communication tower, and the SeeD Request was to defend the city. Seifer even failed the exam because instead of obeying orders (Defend the square against invading Galbadian Soldiers), he got bored of waiting, and went after a group of Galbadian Soldiers he spotted climbing uphill for the tower.
hd stands for hyper data by the way :) i've seen people who think adel is making the noise so many times, it's a pretty complex plot point actually so there are many misconceptions regarding it. "A high-tech device intended for weakening and confining a sorceress' power. Shot into the moon's orbit after going through a special sealing process. Used to confine Sorceress Adel. It is the main cause of radio interference on the planet." this is from the ultimania i believe? (correct me if i'm wrong!!)
It's not confirmed to be Adel saying those things, but it's logical given _what_ is said: "Bring me back there" "I will never let you forget about me" "I am alive." I mean, who else could be saying that, really.
I've never heard it pronounced LunATic before. But a LunATic Pandora does sound more apt than a lowly Lunatic Pandora. The latter makes me think "crazy", while the former sounds more like a moon-related descriptor
PS: HD didnt mean anything in the real world when ff viii was released in 1998-1999...;) I honestly think that ff viii could really use a sequel, and prequel. One that deals with the origin of the sorceress powers (prequel), and one that further address the moon problem. Perhaps ending with the new party actually gong to the moon. It could be a shoutout (kinda) to ff iv, with the party finding out why all the monsters are there...maybe even have an ultimate GF living on the moon like Bahamut on the moon in 4
Yes FFVIII deserves a remake, but I prefer to share my theory on this. Ultimecia would actually consist of the conscious of Rinoa Heartillly and Adel, forming a single conscious being Ultimecia a mixture of Rinoa's life with Squall and the other's, considering that Ultimecia could've transferred her powers to anyone, she decided to pass them to Edea at the orphanage, a little bit after Ellone had departed, considering Ultimecia was strong, that power wouldn't have been one Adel would've wanted Ellone to possess, but the power from her true self. Considering during the fight with Adel, her main focus was draining Rinoa at this point to restore her former body.

Dude I haven't even watched the video and I'm stoked to see so many people in the comments giving love to FF8. It's much deeper than most people give it credit for, the implications of the actions of our heroes, and the implications of what must've happened for the events of the game to transpire in the first place.
Good video. I’m not a big fan of FFVIII, so I didn’t think about the story too much, but it’s great to see the hidden depth. The TV screen in timber is an awesome little touch as well.
A FFVIII lore video is always a treat to see. I still remembered the basic reasoning behind the communication interference (and it always did bug me that the world didn't have a name). But that little detail of ominous jumbled words on the Timber television, really is eerie and pretty cool! Like she refuses to let the world forget her, causing her presence to be felt through the (nameless) world of FFVIII.
My take on Adel's butch body is the whole body transfer thing the Sorceress' do. I would assume Some gigantic Adonis looking dude at some point was the best candidate for a new body to inhabit. Rather then go for someone hot like Edea she went for that guy cause he was super strong. resistant and the best choice at the time. I don't remember anywhere in the story saying that the sorceress' had to posses a female body.
As John Paul O'Neil states, it's a transference of power. Sorceresses/Witches need to pass on their power so they can attain a "peaceful death". Sorceresses/Witches also don't inherently have the ability to "posses" people, Ultimecia does it by using Junction Machine Ellone, which is a machine Dr Odine creates that replicates Ellone's ability to junction her conscious onto another person. Only the machine has a limited timespan reach, which is why she searches for the real Ellone who can send her conscious back even further into the past.
This is a great recap but you missed a few key points as to why wireless was disabled... The video just narrates that she was sealed away and thats why wireless is no longer functional. Allow me to explain further: 1) Adel's powers were never fully sealed. She was still sending telepathic messages and attempting to influence anyone or anything on the planet. There is an Easter egg that demonstrates this -- on disc 1 as you're walking to or from the TV station, before the broadcast initiates (and also when its finished) you can see orange text scrolling up and down on the screen. If you look closely, the text says "IMALIVE" "BRINGMEBACKTHERE". "ILLNEVERLETYOUFORGETME". Adel was telepathically sending messages to anything with a wireless signal. This is why the Timber TV station was shut down and thus all wireless in general, because she could still influence it. Hope that helps :)

i could explain the communications blackout in just a few sentences. esthar sealed the sorceress adel. The 3 seals used are technical rather than magical, and the level of power needed to keep her sealed away and prevent anyone from releasing her from her prison, also had to effectively block all wireless signals to prevent anyone from remotely releasing her. also im pretty sure ellone is pronounced el oh knee.

I think you missed something here, Adel's tomb emits ultra strong jamming signals to further dampen her powers and that's what's cause the comms blackout on the planet, no Adel Herself, although, as you said, she found a way to manipulate such waves to send messages... Surely is one of the best FFs ever, not the best for me though, that's FFVI, VIII is the second, IV the third

I always thought the story of this game was interesting. The Lunatic Pandora, Lunar Cry, etc. are all really cool story elements for me. I also liked how the story is basically a love story. But I wish they explained the lore a lot more.

Ive played the game twice, once as a teen, again as an adult. Its hard to juggle all the complex story plots in this game. There is time compression, Adell's Backstory, The whole Laguna Subplot, The Garden attack/history subplot, etc. etc. Its easy to get lost with the way everything is presented in the game.

Even in this video, when he's talking about how nothing is wireless and requires cables, what is the point of a "communications tower" then?
Why does the tower literally have a dish on it? Why these massive, beautiful, complex animations of the tower opening a communications dish? Are those just decorations, and the real communications are through the cable that has nothing to do with the big dish?
The animation literally shows that dish shooting out this massive beam of visible energy. I mean, that's . . . wireless communication, isn't it?
shadmere I don't remember anything about communications being blocked...I also played to the Lunatic Pandora, which was like the least 1/6 of the game or so, and I didn't know anything about time compression/sorceresses.
@@shadmere Before Adel's Tomb was sent into space, wireless communications were commonplace, hence the tower. Only after the Tomb was sent into space did the wireless jamming happen, rendering the tower useless. Before the Tomb falls, you can still make very short broadcasts, like in Timber, but nothing more which is why people opted for wired communication via HD cables.
That makes sense! I am okay with wireless communication being harder, but everyone talking about how it was IMPOSSIBLE seems to go against things we literally see happen. Thanks!
Awwwwww man! The nostalgia! It's a long time since I played FF8! It was my first ever FF game! What a great video Pez! I agree Adel and her motivations are a really interesting facet of the overall story - I can remember being quite fascinated at the time. The one thing that really blew my mind with this video (that I didn't know before) was the secret messages on the TV screen in Timber!!! I totally had no idea they were there! So thanks!! :)
They're not really legible in the game's original resolution - the original textures are sufficiently detailed, but the PSX output wasn't.

This only continues to prove that most haters of VIII -- and heck, probably even some actual fans -- did _not_ pay attention the story while playing. Some people said they gave up when they found out about the Junction System, and others have even said they literally sped through the cutscenes to get back to game-play. WTF?! FFVIII is so terribly overlooked and that sucks because it is an amazing game in its own right.
Thanks for this video. Maybe it will encourage people to think about the plot a little more and realize they should have paid better attention.
My biggest problem with it was too many implications and not enough answers. That _did_ feel lazy to me. Otherwise, despite the problems in the game, I can overlook them and enjoy it as my favorite Final Fantasy title.

Well, I wanted to read the Ultimania, but don't know where to find it.
And people only hate it because they feel it's not fleshed out enough, but that's entirely the fault of the editors and/or writers. But hopefully, with Katano's words, they will do _just_ that should they remake the game and makes it 10x better.
I really hope that if they do remake VIII, they actually _remake_ it -- not just leave us the half-assed story and focus on game-play elements. We need questions answered and actual build-up to the plot twists.
Well, that's interesting. He even said R=U isn't true. I just don't like one little note he threw in there. _Why_ ? Why go with that one?
If it's the second option, then at least it's possible for it to _not_ happen. But then you have to wonder which ending is canon... But still, even if it is a remake -- you don't completely change the story itself; you just change events that happen in the story while still keeping the plot the same. If Squall dies...the whole game is pointless because none of it would have happened anyway. *facepalm*
Still, this almost makes me _not_ want an VIII remake. If his intention was to deter demand for it, then I just wonder why? Does he not like the game? That's still a stupid, and somewhat selfish, reason.

I love Rinoa, but her relationship with Squall seems forced and unrealistic.
Opinions. Took a bit of time to develop but I found it more interesting than the overused 'love at first sight', the childhood girlfriend or the perfect relationship since the beginning, now that's unrealistic, plus game really suffered from bad translation and being rushed.
I thought that at first too, but you actually have to dive into lore and theories (with proof)for it to make sense. Like I theorize (with proof) that Rinoa is actually a young Ultimecia and that ultimicia traveled back in time to try to fix the broken relationship she had with Squall. I Also think that Squall is the griever summon and that he may have been Utimecias personal summon or GF.

What I always suspected about Sorceresses is that the stronger, and the more of Hyne's power, they have within them the more they look like him. Especially after having his power for a long time. Common traits pop up among the strongest sorceresses: horns/hair resembling horns, tattoos, wings, and a muscular frame/busty torso. Especially the horns and wings. So maybe Adel just looks the closest to Hyne because she had a lot of the power for a long time. Resulting in pecs.
Played this game through five times. I never get tired of it. The story and music are masterpieces. I never understood why so many people didn't like it. Also has great graphics for a PS1 game. Square says they're thinking of remaking it after they finish remaking vii. I really hope they do.
Played this game 18 years ago, it was not only the first Final Fantasy I ever played, but also the first RPG I ever played. Enjoyed the game mechanics but didn't pay enough attention to the story. Thank you for bring all these details up, making me recall bits and pieces of those remote memories.

I never knew there was so much story about Adel! I always thought of her as the dude you fight early on in the game and forget about. Didn't even notice the lack of wireless communication. I was a young kid back then so maybe it was all to subtle for me to notice.

The thing is, every and only the women in this world have the potential to become a Sorceress: One way is to born as one ('Hyne' a.k.a the God of this world passed his power only on the female population), but not everyone develops powers, just a few ones, another way it's if another Sorceress pass her powers into them.
Another thing is, that 'berserk transformation/state' only Adel and Ultimecia have it's unique to them, it's triggered by some kind of tragedy, but then again not every Sorceress can achieve it, just a few of 'em.
Another interesting tidbit, Ellone it's not considered a Sorceress even then she possess some strange powers (thanks to her Dr. Odine developed the Junction Machine), that allowed well Junctioning.
Only females with elemental/non-elemental magic are considered Sorceress.
I thought only certain female individuals could receive sorceress powers. Why does Edea pass her powers to Rinoa but not Quistis or Shelfie? Why does Ultimecia have to find Edea to pass her powers on before her death instead of doing that to a random person?
edea passes to rinoa because rinoa was dumb enough to get up in edeas business canonically. ultimicia wasn't looking for edea. her hatred of garden, of seed, subconsciously had her relentlessly trail the protagonists. because they all were from the same orphanage and because rinoa and squall said they'd meet there and because ultimecia did time compression, ultimicia ends up there. edea is the one who forces the power transfer in fear someone else will get it.

Jordan Hendricks Yes, but I was talking about Final Fantasy only. The games are famous for having long complex storylines with no DLC. It doesn't matter whether the DLC is free or not, in the case of Final Fantasy there should not be any and all story content should be in the game. The many weaves and turns of the stories are what makes them interesting as they take you towards the climax, but no one small vignette from the story is interesting in itself. It is much too late after the story is finished, I no longer care.
an interesting note about the wireless interference... not only is it caused by adel's tomb, it's caused by adel herself.
If you look at the interference pattern on the massive wireless screen that the president initially broadcasts on early in the game, you'll notice its a mass of red scrambled looking letters...
Except its not scrambled at all. It says "I'll never let you forget about me. Bring me back there, I am alive here."
This is the signal that is drowning out all other wireless radio communication (with the exception of the Dollet tower which is pretty obviously one helluva signal amplifier).
Adel's quiet rage is what has killed radio communications, and she is broadcasting it worldwide from the vantage of her satellite tomb. Its impossible to know if it would be such a problem if she was less powerful or if the satellite were still grounded... as both of those may be contributing to the strength and range of the signal.
Its also worth noting that wireless communication was... kind of not really a big thing in '98 when FF8 was released.
Cellphones were still fairly large, had bad range, were expensive as fuck... Granted there was broadcast television, but for the most part everyone wanted cable because it was such a sketchy technology.
As a younger me, playing FF8, I never understood why anyone would make a big deal about not having wireless communication... the internet was already a wires only affair (when it even worked if at all)... the phone system was all cables. Even wireless handsets were pretty uncommon, and they only had to work over about 15 feet. (they usually didn't).
FF8 for all its fantasy and all its scifi, was really kind of similar in its limitations to the real world at the time it was released.
In a lot of ways the FF8 world is weirdly advanced in some things, and sort of behind the times in others that way.

That may be it. I loved the game personally but had always sensed that it wasn't as well liked as other FF titles. Not sure if it was because of the setting or junction magic, which I thought was genius, but it just seemed like the game was swept under the rug and not spoken about much. That's only what I perceived though.
Well, apparently Squall is very popular and he _is_ constantly seen alongside Cloud -- Dissidia, Kingdom Hearts, World of Final Fantasy...
I think games and characters are _much_ better received in Japan than anywhere else. Squall is immensely popular over there and it seems to have a fair-sized fanbase, even globally. I think the love for VIII has just been terribly overshadowed by the love for VII, which the majority of VII fans really do seem to hate every other installment -- from my experience anyway. They _are_ the most vocal fanbase of the entire FF fanbase.
Indeed, I was absolutely referring to western gamers. I am not ashamed to admit that I'm a FFVII fanboy. It was the first titled I played back in my golden years and it holds a special place in my heart but it but never has that tainted my views on the other main line titles. From FFI to FFXV and every other title in between has had something that has appealed to me. Whether it be the story or the mechanics, you name it. I've loved each game equally as if they were my children lol.
So yeah I like this perspective and video. FF8 is the most misleading game in the series and this creates engagement for me that other games can't. More FF8 please. Very good video.

Seriously one of the richest worlds, I would pay all the monies for a full remake of it, expending on things like the deep sea research station, even adding to the lore of hyne and things like that. Beyond just that, seeing all the creative places and designs of objects in today's graphics would be amazing. And they could refine the junction system, I would hope it wouldn't be an action rpg tbh, the junction system has so much potential to be one of their best combat systems with 20 years of hind sight to feed it >.

GilbertGuilford uhm actually junction function is hated due to it makes magics and summons irrelevant. You can try to do magic build or GF build but that's really not gonna get you anywhere especially since everytime you cast magic, you gonna get weaker if you junction the said magic. The limitation is what makes Junction system too one dimensional as everyone will just spam LB with Aura and kills everything. LB in this game is so absurdly strong that it outweighs everything else the game provides.
Don't get me wrong, this is still my favourite Final Fantasy because of the story, ost, and world building, it's just I wish there's more variation than spam Limit Break on every bosses
If every spell you have is junctioned, then you're doing something wrong - and even if you do cast a spell that is junctioned, rather than one you have spare, the stat drop is minimal - and a lot of the time you can draw-cast useful spells without even touching your stock...
You don't want to spam junctioned spells, sure, but you can get a long way with a careful build and selective use of magic.
Though, yeah, limit-spam is broken, and the clear strategy for anyone who just wants to win...

the SeeD Exam mission in Dollet was to clear the city of galbadian forces,not to take out the Communication Tower, that wasn't even activated yet. no one knew Galbadia was after the communication tower, and the SeeD Request was to defend the city. Seifer even failed the exam because instead of obeying orders (Defend the square against invading Galbadian Soldiers), he got bored of waiting, and went after a group of Galbadian Soldiers he spotted climbing uphill for the tower.

i've seen people who think adel is making the noise so many times, it's a pretty complex plot point actually so there are many misconceptions regarding it.

I honestly think that ff viii could really use a sequel, and prequel. One that deals with the origin of the sorceress powers (prequel), and one that further address the moon problem. Perhaps ending with the new party actually gong to the moon. It could be a shoutout (kinda) to ff iv, with the party finding out why all the monsters are there...maybe even have an ultimate GF living on the moon like Bahamut on the moon in 4
Yes FFVIII deserves a remake, but I prefer to share my theory on this. Ultimecia would actually consist of the conscious of Rinoa Heartillly and Adel, forming a single conscious being Ultimecia a mixture of Rinoa's life with Squall and the other's, considering that Ultimecia could've transferred her powers to anyone, she decided to pass them to Edea at the orphanage, a little bit after Ellone had departed, considering Ultimecia was strong, that power wouldn't have been one Adel would've wanted Ellone to possess, but the power from her true self. Considering during the fight with Adel, her main focus was draining Rinoa at this point to restore her former body.

It's much deeper than most people give it credit for, the implications of the actions of our heroes, and the implications of what must've happened for the events of the game to transpire in the first place.

A FFVIII lore video is always a treat to see. I still remembered the basic reasoning behind the communication interference (and it always did bug me that the world didn't have a name). But that little detail of ominous jumbled words on the Timber television, really is eerie and pretty cool! Like she refuses to let the world forget her, causing her presence to be felt through the (nameless) world of FFVIII.
Really glad you're doing some good analysis of the FF8 story. It does not get enough credit from people.

My take on Adel's butch body is the whole body transfer thing the Sorceress' do. I would assume Some gigantic Adonis looking dude at some point was the best candidate for a new body to inhabit. Rather then go for someone hot like Edea she went for that guy cause he was super strong. resistant and the best choice at the time.
I don't remember anywhere in the story saying that the sorceress' had to posses a female body.

As John Paul O'Neil states, it's a transference of power. Sorceresses/Witches need to pass on their power so they can attain a "peaceful death". Sorceresses/Witches also don't inherently have the ability to "posses" people, Ultimecia does it by using Junction Machine Ellone, which is a machine Dr Odine creates that replicates Ellone's ability to junction her conscious onto another person. Only the machine has a limited timespan reach, which is why she searches for the real Ellone who can send her conscious back even further into the past.
Adel is a great singer
This is a great recap but you missed a few key points as to why wireless was disabled... The video just narrates that she was sealed away and thats why wireless is no longer functional. Allow me to explain further:
1) Adel's powers were never fully sealed. She was still sending telepathic messages and attempting to influence anyone or anything on the planet.
There is an Easter egg that demonstrates this -- on disc 1 as you're walking to or from the TV station, before the broadcast initiates (and also when its finished) you can see orange text scrolling up and down on the screen.
If you look closely, the text says "IMALIVE" "BRINGMEBACKTHERE". "ILLNEVERLETYOUFORGETME".
Adel was telepathically sending messages to anything with a wireless signal. This is why the Timber TV station was shut down and thus all wireless in general, because she could still influence it.

i could explain the communications blackout in just a few sentences. esthar sealed the sorceress adel. The 3 seals used are technical rather than magical, and the level of power needed to keep her sealed away and prevent anyone from releasing her from her prison, also had to effectively block all wireless signals to prevent anyone from remotely releasing her. also im pretty sure ellone is pronounced el oh knee.
As one of my favorite final fantasy's I can't believe that's why they don't have communication it's such a big part of the story. Maybe i skipped to much text lol. great vid

I think you missed something here, Adel's tomb emits ultra strong jamming signals to further dampen her powers and that's what's cause the comms blackout on the planet, no Adel Herself, although, as you said, she found a way to manipulate such waves to send messages...
