    My mates and I (who were locals) used to play football inside the castle, back when there was a cricket scoreboard built into the wall. Friends got married in St.Mary's, which is great for midnight mass on Xmas eve. I saw my first dig there when I was a child. The dig was led by Barry Cunliffe, who was also on the Fishbourne Roman Palace dig, amongst many others.
    In the 1960s -70s, the talk was of the white lady falling from the keep after walking around the castle. I don't recall any mention ever of anything crying over a grave though. The Grey man, yes.

    Hiya Nic...what an absolutely beautiful location. That outta bay is enormous, as you say it must have contained quite a lot of timber buildings and wonder if it had a marketplace as well.... definitely big enough. The Augustine church is also stunning. The gravestone is beautifully detailed, under the crown looks like an infinity symbol...I'd be surprised if it was a pirate grave as I believe most were simply buried at sea, folks probably think it's a pirate gravestone because of the skull and crossbones, but as you say, that doesn't symbolise pirates. That keep is huge and the view from the top is simply stunning...love the ancient wall art as well.
    Nic... thanks so much for this. Really enjoyed it.🖤

      Hey Mark! It's a real belter of a castle, this one! Glad you enjoyed it!
      Totally agree around the alleged pirate grave. There is a 2nd story involving a pirate grave down on the shore, which could be more plausible.
      Thanks for watching, always appreciated 🙂

    Lovely video, used to live in Portchester/Caer-Peris, so spent many a day there but back then they didn't have all the displays in the castle like they do now. I have even done a few Druid ceremonies in the grounds to celebrate the Autumn Equinox a few years back.

    It is all those things BEAUTIFUL VAST INCREDIBLE!! AND MAY I ADD FANTASTIC!! I am so happy you brought it to us. Thank you very much! True ghosts do not just come out at night. The grave you asked about being one of a pirate I have one question do you think a pirate would be given such a nice burial and headstone? I don't really.

    • @walkingthewyrd
      @walkingthewyrd  5 месяцев назад

      No, I don't think it's a pirate grave at all. I read a second story about a pirate grave being on the shore outside the castle, which is more likely. Both stories were sadly very vague!
      Thank you for watching, I really appreciate it. 🙂

    Seaborne Raids didn't start with the Vikings. The Saxons were doing it during the Roman times, after all the Saxons that stayed home were the ancestors of Danish Vikings.

  • @davidperrott5743

    I'm guessing the "pirate grave" thing came from the skull and crossbones which didn't actually have anything to do with piracy.

    In fact they were custom houses & storage places for traders. Not Saxon pirates - see in depth study of the Saxon Shores in the Roman manuscripts.

    I am so late to this!! Impressively huge castle, you're spoilt for historical sites down your way...I think the symbol under the crown is an eternal life thing...if it is a serpent eating its tail, kind of hard to make out

    • @walkingthewyrd
      @walkingthewyrd  5 месяцев назад +1

      Hey David! This was a fantastic castle! Yes, I agree about it possibly being a serpent on the gravestone.
