A Walk Through The Ages | Discovering Dorset's Iron Age Hillforts
A warm welcome to Walking The Wyrd!
You would be forgiven for passing a hillfort without giving it much thought. To most of us today, they are a pretty place to walk with spectacular views.
However, to our ancestors, they were so much more.
In this walk, I explore the Neolithic, Iron Age and even modern 17th century history of the incredible Hambledon Hill in Dorset before then exploring it's neighbouring hillfort, Hod Hill. This slightly smaller hillfort was well used by the romans who built a fort in it's highest corner.
With many layers of history to walk through, I hope this short film will give people a taste of what lies beneath their feet should they ever come across a hillfort themsel...

The abandoned chapel in the woods | St Luke's Chapel
Просмотров 2,4 тыс.28 дней назад
Welcome to Walking The Wyrd! This week, I take a summer stroll through the beautiful Dorset landscape in search of an abandoned chapel in the woods. The chapel of St Luke, just north of Abbotsbury, was built in 1246 by Cistercian monks. They lived and farmed the surrounding lands for 300 years until the dissolution of the monasteries saw the chapel reduced to rubble. The chapel then fell under ...
Portchester Castle | From Roman Fort to Medieval Stronghold!
Просмотров 935Месяц назад
Welcome to Walking The Wyrd! In this video, I explore the incredible grounds of Portchester Castle which started life as a Roman Fort to defend from the invasion of Saxon barbarian pirates! The fort was well used by the Saxons after Roman rule as a fortified settlement. Later, the Normans took ownership and added the great square keep which is one of the largest and oldest keeps in England. The...
Exploring The Hellfire Caves - home of the hedonistic Hellfire Club!

Welcome to Walking The Wyrd! The West Wycombe Caves were excavated with good intentions by Sir Francis Dashwood, 2nd Baronet, to relieve local unemployment which had been caused by three consecutive failed harvests in the mid 18th century. The local men were able to find work quarrying the chalk in the caves which was then used as a building material in the local area. But, it was the hedonisti...

Highcliffe | The tranquil town with links to WITCHCRAFT!
Просмотров 7092 месяца назад
Welcome to Walking The Wyrd! Join me for a summer walk at beautiful Highcliffe in Dorset! This peaceful town is home to one of the most architecturally important castles in the UK. It's mix of styles, French medieval, Renaissance, and Gothic Revival, give it an appearance which looks much older than it really is. Although not technically a castle, it served as a much loved mansion to many famil...
Sherborne Dorset | Castles, Christianity and an ancient curse!

Welcome to Walking The Wyrd! In this walk, I take a wander around the historic market town of Sherborne in Dorset. This pretty town was originally called Scir Burne by the Saxons meaning 'clear stream' which refers to the brook that runs through the town. The town's abbey was first founded in 705 by King Ine. He appointed St Aldhelm as the first Bishop of Sherborne. In 1075, the abbey became a ...

Welcome to Walking The Wyrd! On this adventure, I took a beautiful summer walk around the ancient Oxfordshire landscape. My first stop was the Uffington White Horse, which is the oldest hill chalk figure in the UK. Created by our Bronze Age ancestors, the White Horse remains shrouded in mystery and folklore. I then headed for Wayland's Smithy. This Neolithic chambered long barrow was used by ea...
Treachery, Sorcery, Murder & Executions! The Dark History of Farleigh Hungerford Castle.

Farleigh Hungerford Castle looks like the quintessential English ruin yet underneath the surface, lies a history bound with tales of treachery, infidelity, sorcery, wrongful imprisonment, murder and deceit! Henry VIII's FIERCE coastal fortification!

Between 1539 and 1547, King Henry VIII ordered a series of costal forts to be built known as Device Fort's. These artillery fortifications were created to deter enemy invasion, particularly from the French and Spanish. I think the sheer size of it would have made it really difficult to defend, even on horseback. I liken them to early castles - they can only take so much attack before someone infiltrates it. Thanks for watching!

Good BOTG in Hellfire caves, thank you. Was it actually a chalk mine, or something built by the Free Masons as a rite of passage for their new recruits? There do seem to be many geometric figures inside. If you ever get the chance to visit Margate in Kent, there is a a similar puzzling cave system based on female reproductive organs. Well worth a look.

I see a lot of historic graffiti on my travels. I was recently looking round angel meadow manchesters most notorious victorian slums and noticed names carved into a bridge nearby and one of them is hirridge who was one of the areas more well known criminals and him and his gang used to hang about near the bridge. This also led us to manchesters southern cemetery where the famouse detective jerome comanada is burried along with lowry the angel of the meadow and some other famous people. Lowry is another link to angel meadow as he painted some of his paintings round there and we had a trip to Berwick-upon-Tweed which was lowrys favourite place to holiday and he painted a few scenes from the area also we had to visit lindisfarne 😊

So pleased that you mention the heavy, somewhat oppressive feeling at Wayland's Smithy. l experienced this every time l visited, even on bright, cheerful summer days there was a palpable tinge of (what l could only describe as) sadness. Whenever l lingered until dusk the feeling would become more pronounced accompanied by a kind of urging to "leave, leave, leave..." l found these dark feelings to be in stark contrast to the sheer joyfulness to be experienced when up on White Horse Hill. Driving past at night l would always slow down, wind down the windows, and breathe in the contrasting 'feels' as l passed both sites.

Much better filming than another video about this place on youtube. What I find intriguing about so many of these old tales and superstitions is how illogical they can be - in this case, plant them far enough apart that the sisters can't talk to each other in the afterlife. Did no one think that they might be able to meet up in the world beyond this one? Interestingly we have a holy well near here, and that too is liberally decked with streamers and votive gifts - only its in a churchyard.

I always try to forget modern county boundaries when exploring these hill forts, they stretch across Dorset into Devon along the coast and inland. So many of them seem to be conveniently located as potentially markets for livestock and goods. When you overlay a map of drove roads and sunken lanes they all connect, there would be no reason for that if they were seperate places with no interconnections.
