After watching your Kumiko "How-To" video, I purchased a Lie-Nielsen low angle block plane, and am now in the middle of my first Kumiko build. I have Successfully built my planing jig and lattice. I'm hoping to finish the angle jigs in the next day. Thank you for the inspiration. It's very likely I would not have done this if not for your video(s).
I love your projects, descriptions, your workshop, and your little assistant. Thank you for not having background music. And for sharing ideas of things to listen to. A perfect channel.
Gratuitous shop helper cuteness == automatic thumbs up from this dad. They are so cute and fun when they are that little. Glad to see you are savoring that time--wise man! Oh, yeah, the project turned out great, too.
Couldn't agree with you more about keeping a shop interesting. My shop is purely hobbyist, but it's I spend most days in it and want it to be fun and entertaining. Sweet project!
Thank YOU for all the content. It’s funny, I live down in the Springs and do very similar work as you but still enjoy watching other makers create things.
@@JWPshenigans I really enjoy watching other makers as well, especially those who are really good at what they do. Drop me a line via my website if your ever up in my neck of the woods.
Super fun Mike! This should now be a pre requirement for any Kumiko class. Tell Pekovich and Kenney to assign this to their students. The larger size helps explain the offset miters better.
Great project Mike. Here's another idea - cover the front with some sort of translucent material (fabric or paper), put strips of LED's behind it and turn it into a giant light panel.
I was trying to figure out who my favorite woodworker was the other day I couldn't come up with one. I've made up my mind and I picked you. I really like that your organized and that you owned every tool I could ever dream of. And of course that your work is crazy good. Keep it up man.
On a small piece, any inaccuracies could be hidden, on such a large scale, they would stand out. But I did see any, all your joints came together perfectly, specially on the center sunburst! Glad you didn't make the usual joint planing jigs, scaled up, they would be enormous !! ;-)
Gosh I want to make one of these now. I think 1x4 would look cool, thinner and more delicate maybe. These could be incorporated into a headboard too. Awesome inspiration man.
I was puzzled when I first saw that thumbnail, because to me the whole point of Kumiko woodwork is that it is small, finely detailed work that looks great partly because of the small size of the parts. However the idea of making gates, doors, fences and garden furniture incorporating these patterns is extremely appealing. I am still going to start making jigs for the small stuff first...
wow it looks like a your shop symbol or emblem! yeah many Japanese families emblems use flowers or plants, or there are altars in work shops. Happy new year!

Great video Mike, i love the precision in your work! Would you ever consider making a video going over different finishes and pro's and cons of each, and what works best in different applications? This is something that I lack a lot of knowledge in, and would love to learn more about.
Excellent Work Mike as always !!! Very talented musicians in the Dave Mathews Band also. The shop apprentice is learning excellent basics... a Clean Shop is safer and more functional. Great Foundation learning. Keep up the Great Work.

Very nice and very interesting, I think it would take me heck of a lot longer than one day though. I also think it’s equally testament to your geometry skills as it is to your woodworking skills. A great video.

Nice, and glad to see that the shop apprentice is back again and pulling his weight.

Mike, you have by chance created a cool teaching tool for the regular size Kumiko work. At least for me this gives real clarity..

This could form the basis for some really cool looking outdoor structures, Kumiko inspired pergola for example, made out of cedar perhaps.
Thank you. I agree that was one of the reasons I wanted to make this, to get a sense of what it could be used for. Pergola, fence, etc.
Yes I think I may try this with a more 90 degree oriented pattern for a large pergola that houses some vining clematis.
