I never thought I would need to learn how to use a surgical mask from a surgeon. But thanks to covid, this was much needed and much appreciated. Thanks Doc! You were awesome. Yes, please make more videos. Your knowledge is more crucial than ever beyond the frontline workers. Thank you for your dedication to your profession. Your attention to detail >>> WOW!

I am a paramedic and I need my glasses to read the tiny drug vials and to start IV's. This trick is hands down the ONLY trick that has actually worked. I have tried anti-fog liquids, soap residue and even full face masks. Thank you for making this video..you are awesome !!

I'm no doctor or nurse or other medical worker, but I am so thankful for this video. I've watched SO MANY RUclips tutorials for how to prevent glasses from fogging up while wearing a mask, but they barely helped. I realized that, since surgeons have been using masks (for HOURS) even before the pandemic, a tutorial by a surgeon would be best. Glad I came across your video. This really helped me during this pandemic.

Thank you. This clarifies things. There are always questions though. There is a doctoral dissertation's worth of issues around untrained, unsupported people wearing any old piece of cloth in the grocery store and why we are told to do it anyway. Flattening the curve and so on. Pages of: yes but . . ., at the same time . . ., if this, then . . . Eventually I just decided to give it my best try and stop bothering people. Good luck and love to everyone. The bubonic plague came to an end and so will this. That's not much consolation, I know. 💖

Thanks! This is the only video on this subject that has yielded any results. Well, positive results anyway. I need to wear a face mask in hospital (and getting there) for an upcoming procedure and the fogging has been driving me made while doing a bit of practice wearing. I had to manipulate the nose wire to carefully conform to my face, but it was worth the effort. There's a little mistiness at the edges of the lenses but it's acceptable.

I don't feel safe enough to get on the Subway yet, but this will make it more doable once I get there to work w/ a mask on & still be able to read my work. The fog was interfering. I sit here now typing w/ it on. Once adjusted as advised, no problem. A thousand thanks!!!

      Hi Joan,
Another person commented about losing hearing aids also. They were commenting on one of my other mask videos, where I show how to make a headband using small rubber bands. ruclips.net/video/usKgChGqVl0/видео.html
      Here is their comment:
      Cosens-Prior • 7 hours ago
There is a slight problem with this method. All the Kitchen paper roll I have bought is only 9" square so it makes the mask too small ie too shallow to go under your chin. Also the elastic bands are not good for people with BTE Behind the ear Hearing-Aids as the elastic can too easily flick them off! At £3000 for a pair for digital hearing aids this is not good news if they get pulled off and drop in the street. Though I do like the idea of linked elastic bands to make a strap for the top or back of the head that was a brilliant idea.
I will need to figure out a way to connect the rubber band chain to a regular disposable mask.

I find a lot of the cloth masks sold that don’t have the metal bar thing that goes over the nose fogs up my glasses and then I actually can’t see. I’m sure many other people have this same problem. Even if I put my glasses over the top of the mask I have problems too. (Due to bone problems I have it’s very hard for me to wear a mask, but in case of an emergency I have to.) I remember a product back in the mid to late 70s (when I was a kid) that was an anti-fog formula for glasses. It would be nice if they still made that.

Thanks Doc. In addition to helping with mask fitting, you also answered another important question I had. I used to wonder why reacement knees could not be implanted until someone was almost dead, opposed to the years they would actually use their knees. After listening to your "non-mechnical" description of how to fit the mask....I realized; Dr.s are not mechanics, and Biomedical engineers aren't carpenters. Maybe multiple disciplines should collaborate on knee and hip parts as well as masks.

What’s more important, easier to breathe or getting COVID?!? For the mask to be effective, there should be no gap anywhere on the circumference of mask and if you intentionally create this gap to breathe easier, you’re defeating the purpose of the mask.

    Dr,
You may recall I suggested using a soap solution impregnated into a home made mask as an extra defense against contamination.
Earlier today, I experimented with my covering of choice, a double layer "bikers scarf" (aka snood) between the folds of which I slide a layer of 3 ply unwoven HEPA filter material.
I took the scarf, made of elastic man made material, and coated a portion in a 70/30% mixture of liquid soap and water.
The mixture was absorbed and I dried the scarf in the sun.
When dry, there was no immediate indication of the coating, dry to the touch, not slippery.
If touched with a damp spong, cloth or finger, the soap reactivated, slippery, but not so much as to become visually noticeable.
If as suspected the virus reaches the outer surface of a mask on a "wet" droplet/aerosol, and if soap is in fact sufficient to compromise the surface of the virus, this may be a useful extra layer of protection?
Since my "scarf" is independent of the filter I use, that should still provide protection as specified (HEPA = 0.3 micron).
Any moisture from my breath escaping either through, or around my filter will of course also activate the soap, hopefully reducing my virus shed (if any).
I intend to try the mask in public with the front facing layer coated.
    Hope this is of interest

Thank you for explaining how to use a mask. I’ve tried to make the paper omega fold masks but somehow the end up way to small. It is possible that the kitchen paper in Europe is smaller than in the US. I use other folds that look like surgical masks and I use salted paper (paper sprayed with salt water then left to dry).

    • @GeorgeYangMDNYC
      @GeorgeYangMDNYC  4 года назад +3

Hi, for the European sizes ~23x23cm square, instead of folding it in half from top to bottom (which makes the mask only 11.5 cm from top to bottom => too small for an adult, but nice size for children), fold the bottom up 4.5 cm and the top down 4.5 cm. This leaves you a mask size from top to bottom ~14 cm. This the the size of the American towel (11 inches folded in half 5.5 inches => 14 cm). There will be a 2.5 cm gap in the center of the mask.
Lay in a Kleenex tissue paper (for blowing your nose) in side of the top and bottom fold.
Then cut a 3 cm x28cm strip from a A4 printer paper. Lay that over the gap in the middle of the mask.
Fold the bottom flap along the paper strip. Fold the top flap down along the paper strip. Then fold both flaps up so the two folds meet in the middle of the mask.
Almost done. The paper strip will stick out past the towel. Instead of folding the towel and paper, leave the towel alone and fold the paper tabs forward to the front of the mask.
Loop the rubber band on the paper tab.
Place a staple on the seam from the inside of the mask to the outside where the tab is.
      Repeat on the other side.
It will look something like this.
      ruclips.net/user/postUgzeM2hsnn_q1MNvXil4AaABCQ?app=desktop
I will need to make another video of what I described for a European Omegafold face mask for our EU friends.

    • @hallobre
      @hallobre 4 года назад +1

George Yang, MD thank you for actually responding with an explanation on how we can do it. I really appreciate it. The Kleenex feels better against the face and I think it filters also good. I also usually add a straightened paper clip for the nose.
As for the salt layer I mentioned, I think you should read the following link: www.businessinsider.com/mask-coated-in-salt-neutralizes-viruses-like-coronavirus-2020-2?amp
Maybe you already know about it, but I thought since you work in the field you might want to read it.

Ha... I have discovered the same technique. But I can never figure out where to bend it, so I press the strip against my nose, then take it off and bend it with my fingers. Also, after you put the mask on, pinch the nose strip with one hand and you will have zero leakage.

    Dr Yang.
I've been told that simple soap can break down the "fatty" exterior of the virus, rendering it inert.
    Got me thinking.
If this is true would a slightly diluted soap solution (dish soap?) Spread (Sprayed?) onto the inner face of the paper towel (as folded in on itself) then allowed to dry, be affective?
Would the breath of the wearer be sufficient to reactivate the soap solution and destroy the virus?

Interesting idea. I can't give any information on whether that would work. Another commenter posted this link on one of the other videos:www.businessinsider.com/mask-coated-in-salt-neutralizes-viruses-like-coronavirus-2020-2
Other commenters were using lemon juice (citric acid) to treat the filter layer. I'm not sure how much protection it will give. I suspect it will kill the virus if the virus lands on that filter layer, but if the outside surface is contaminated, but not touching the filter layer, then the risk is when taking off the mask and potentially touching your nose, mouth and eyes before washing your hands. The Hong Kong article which inspired the whole paper towel mask making videos was essentially telling their residents not to wash or boil their face masks because it degrades the mask. They made a public service announcement on how to make your own paper towel mask because of shortages. www.consumer.org.hk/ws_en/news/2020/covid-19-diymasks
      www.scmp.com/news/hong-kong/health-environment/article/3050689/how-make-your-own-mask-hong-kong-scientists
If you look at their mask design, it is not sealed on top and wide open on the sides and under the chin.
Yet they seem to be doing pretty well controlling it without completely shutting down the economy. www.coronavirus.gov.hk/eng/index.html#Health_Tips
I posted a diagram in my community section which you may like.

I suppose there's no reason a similar soap solution (50/50 soap/ water?) couldn't be sprayed lightly onto the outside of a mask and allowed to dry, waiting for activation either by the wearer's breath, or by wet aerosol from another shedding nearby?
If successful, the outer surface could be re-sanitized by a respray of solution or maybe even water mist?
It would be an interesting experiment for a lab to determine if such a spray works?
      One stage further.
      Salt *and* salt in solution?
Not sure what effect they have on each other?

I saw the salt solution idea, it may require a fully wet application, so may not work with all masks (paper)?
I would lightly spray only the outer layer, leaving the filter and skin side untouched.
      That would (hopefully)
      1) Kill any "wet" virus coming from other sources..
      2) Nuetralise my "wet" breath (already filtered)
Any breath of mine reaching the outer covering would provide moisture to keep it activated.
It would be less likely to hold live virus, reducing the transfer when touching the outside of the mask, plus, adding a layer of soap to hands when doing so (!?) activated by breath or perspiration.
I suppose saline / soap solution could provide even better results?
      Question.
Could this provide a method for "refreshing" multi use masks if removed, refitted?
A light spray on the outer surface (no more than the equivalent of breath) without affecting filter performance?

I would think that having soap or detergent in the mask fibers would make them hydrophilic, helping droplets to pass through easier. So without serious testing to see if more or less virus passes the mask , it's probably risky. Interesting line of thought, though.

take some foam shaving cream and apply to lens of glasses. Just like the mirror in your bathroom. It will not fog up with a shower. Foam shaving cream, rub it until clear. Done

Problem is fogging of glasses is an indication of a poor seal. This video is handy because it shows us how to obtain a better seal. But thanks for the info; I'm going to try it on my bathroom mirrors next time I shower!

I fixed mine by doing some sneaky mods to my mask. From a far it looks like a normal mask but inside I breathe fresh air like a boss and no more fogging. 😎

some good advice, thanks doc, you can also use glass cleaner on your glasses and they won't fog as much, saliva works too if you don't have glass cleaner although it's not very hygienic spitting on your glasses XD
